Epic 1968 Dodge Charger - We Drive it!

- We Australians are huge fans of American Muscle Cars and there is no shortage here in the land down under. Join Glenn Everitt as we check out some iconic Mopar Muscle Cars. A 1968 Dodge Charger and a 1970 Dodge Challenger. We even get to drive the Charger, just like the car used in the Steve McQueen movie Bullit.

Passionate car guy and Master of Machines host Glenn Everitt has extensive experience in the Automotive Industry, as a high performance technician, auto mechanic and dyno tuner, including other industries such as auto restoration and auto detailing. He's a lifelong racer too, born into a motorsport family and starting with road racing from the age of 14, and also competing in Drag Racing to help promote his dyno shop for many years. He's also passionate about two wheels as well, having started out on dirt bikes, then moving to Sports bikes of all kinds.

I still hate my self for NOT buying that -70 Charger RT/SE with 440 back in the 80's. And now I sit here, enjoying your drive, drooling and banging my head in the table... Thanks for rubbing it in! ;-)

If you watch the movie Bullitt, you will see the Charger go over a hill, and then you see the same hill from a different camera. Look for the VW a few times. The Charger in Bullitt was a 1st-year coke bottle-type car that Dodge introduced via the movie. It replaced the iconic '66 and '67 Dodge Chargers. Now I stopped this video at the 6:11 marker because I noticed the pistol grip. That pistol grip never came in those Chargers, in fact, the Pistol never showed up until 1970. The 1968 Dode Charger RT only ever came with a 440 or 426. I owned a '68 with a 383 Magnum and it was a powerhouse all on its own. Beautiful cars. If you think they are big, place one alongside the Newer Dodge Charger, and you will instantly see just how much smaller the older Chargers are by comparison. Probably because of all the computer gadgetry and airbags in the newer Charger of today. Great show and thank you for the memories of my youth in Toronto Ontario Canada.

Though viewers shouldn't be left w/the incorrect info. that the '6 Pack' was an option on a '68 Charger. The "440 Six Pack" wasn't a Dodge option until 1969 1/2, much less a Charger option until 1970.
Why doesen't this channel have more subscribers? The production value is good and things are explained without a bunch of unnecessary music or drama.

When I was in High School, my dad bought a '68 Charger. It just had a 318 engine but was a solid car. Later in life I got a '72 Charger, bright yellow with a black hood. My only regret was trading it in, in 1976. Back then, I doubt many knew what the value would be in 2020. :)

I was a 17 year old junior in high school in 1975. My first car was a 1969 Dodge Charger 383 Magnum 4 barrel 4 speed. I paid $1,200 for it and owned it for a year and a half. I still have the sales receipt from when I sold it in June 1976 for $1,000. I would give anything to have that car back.
Beautiful car but the 6 Pack and Pistol Grip are not standard. Fantastic add on thought that's for sure!

I'm a MOPAR nut, I have been since I was a kid back in the 1960s in Toronto Ontario. With NASCAR although the Charger won a few races, they were really bad, the aerodynamics of the car just plainly sucks. Beautiful cars, don't get me wrong, I owned a '68 338 Magnum and a '70 RT 440-6pack. Dodge developed the Charger 500 for NASCAR to aim at the aerodynamics and that did a little better, but it wasn't until they brought our the 1969 Dodge Daytona and the 1970 Plymouth Superbird that the powerhouse of Dodge and Plymouth tookoff. In fact, the Winged Warriors were so good the other teams complained and the Birds came to an end and band from racing in just 2 seasons of NASCAR. I subscribed to your site and I am going to see if you have done any more MOPAR.. Great show, thank you for reminding me of my youth.

I bought a 1968 Dodge charger 1972. Baby blue 440 Magnum RT 727 torqueflite converter, torque bars in the back with wrinkled wall tires. Spun the main rebuilt it on the side of house. I was 17 18 years old I put it together the same way I tore apart. There wasn't a Chevelle in town that could take it
If my memory serves me correct the mustangs in Bullit were always planned and was done so with Fords involvement. The Dodge Chargers were an after thought as the script required a sinister baddies getaway car so director simply went and bought two Chargers off a local dealer like anyone walking in to buy a car. Turned out the Chargers were out performing the mustangs to the point they had to slow down intentionally to allow the mustangs to play their role!! Now could be wrong but I’m sure I read that many years ago....... I’ve loved them ever since.
iamthebroker , Ive heard a similar story but I’m told they had to modify the Mustangs engine to help it keep up. That big bad black Dodge 440 certainly was an awesome choice, I agree.
Glenn Everitt - Master of Machines by the way Glenn, love your channel. Your channel is what we need, local muscle car stories of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Did a country pub run over a weekend about a month ago in my 74 xb GT with my two brothers one in a 72 Q’y Munro and the other in his 78 HZ Caprice. All 3 original & unmolested. Keep up the Aussie content.... but it’s all good.

Not being rude but know your history b4 you make such comments. If you wanted a mustang performer to compete, you could get one from Ford. Most people didn't buy the hi po Mustangs. Ford offered a few versions. The only thing you had to do to get a Ford to run good was HEADS. Or you could buy the engine with the good Heads. Hence 428, 429 cj or scj. Hell the 69 MK iii would make that Charger look real bad. Lol Seen it happen more than once. Those early 460s were no joke. I have one . Let's not Forget the Mustang was a Secretaries Car. Lol

its just me or what but when u get behind the wheels on an old school muscle car u feel like a million bucks lol i had a 68 couger 302 4 barrel n i always felt joy to drive it i regret selling it n now im fixing a 79 z28 n it feel great to drive it with the family still a project working on it lil by lil great ride

It,s funny when you hear people talk about Horsepower of an engine.
When you talk about Dodge engines you don,t talk about Horsepower ??
You Talk about Torque.
They might like to rev hard but they don,t need to.

I owned a CL Chysler Ute with a 360 engine.
It was fun to drive, you just think about doing a burnout and this Ute would do it before i thought of it, LOL.
I would not mind owning that Ute again.
Current drive is a XR8 Ute, lucky for me they fitted the BA GT motor to this model.
Definitely NO Dodge engine but at least i know i have put the foot down, lol.

1966-1974 are the best years of the Dodge Charger
more like 68-72 so the motors aren't nerfed, lol. You should give the first Gen 66-67 a look too they are damn fine cars as well.

That Charger stock made about 415 Hp with a single four barrel with the Six Pac setup put on it if the cam isn't changed it would be about 440 Hp give or take maybe a little more if in tune.
I used to own many years ago a 68 Charger that was loaded 13.000 miles on it when I got it it had the 383 with the automatic on the floor. It was built with a 3.91 posi rear that's how the guy ordered it.
put a Racer Brown Hemi profile cam in it and headers also a Holley 750 DP it ran in the quarter 13.43s all day long man I loved that car.

Yes, Black looks so awesome but sure keeps the owners busy. I said I'd never buy a black car again once, and that was about 4 Black cars ago...haha!

That Charger is a beautiful machine - Triple black is so great. But for a Mopar man he doesn't know his rear axles. 1:48 He's calling the diff a "Posi-Trac". Incorrect. That's a Chev term. He should be saying Chrysler Sure-Grip. Or if it was a Dana 60, it would be a Trac-Loc. It's like a Ford 429 Mustang owner saying his transmission is a 727 TorqueFlite. It's quite surprising how often these through and through car nuts get their naming wrong. But anyway, what a beautiful sounding engine and looks so awesome on the road; great filming from the chopper in these series too, much better than most car test videos will show.
Re that 70 Challenger - "you only sell a [Aust] Charger to buy a Challenger" Yep - had to smile at that. And for that price, a heap of bolts is all he should expect. But he did very well to get it that look as it is now. On ya Mate.
The Charger was nice, very nice. Love the torque of those big blocks! How did it feel to drive on the "correct" side of the car? 😜 I can't imagine driving a car from the right side and shifting with my left hand. I'd probably wreck it!
It feels good! We have many LHD cars in the scene here, as some time ago regulations allowed a 25 years and older rule for LHD cars to driven on our roads here, thank goodness.

Just wondering, what would be the red line on it? (not that you'd need it, lol).
Those old cars don't have a set redline, you can keep revving until the bottom end of the motor tears it's self apart. It's probably not smart to go past 6500-7000rpm tho. I shift my 360 in my 79 Plymouth at around 6600-6800rpm and it handles it very well, I wouldn't push it past around 7200 tho because that's just asking for trouble.
And another thing, the Charger Never saw the Mustang's taillights...
Lovely cars Glen ,love the 440 , i would also love to see, if you get a drive and track down a 426 hemi in Aus ,they fascinate me,they seem to have a mystic ,people say they we're hard to tune ,I wonder how well they do go even compared to modern stuff and do they feel much different from a 440 and weather they live up to the hype, good to get your take on one

I know I'm knit picking but he said it had a posi-trac, posi-trac is Chevy, Mopar uses sure-grip.
I really miss mine. It had very low mileage on a young 426 Hemp with a 4 speed behind it.
Want a thrill? I had a 1970 Challenger R/T 440 SixPak that I bought new and drove for 10 years, It ad a torgueflite tranny and my best time at S.I.RF. was a 10:93 at 132 nph.. It was orange too with black R/T stripes. My engine was dyno'd at a little over 650 HP and would wheelie on launch.
Dont worry Bought the air the carbs suck in, i would be worried about the horrendous about of fuel it goes through.

It’s weird that the 426 has better performance then the bigger 440
The 426 is a more efficient engine, particularly in the cylinder head area and its hemispherical combustion chamber design. It's a pretty epic bit of gear.
Performance is all in the heads. The better an engine can breath, the more ass it kicks.
340 heads where pretty much perfect for a stock design, they could stay with a 440 because of weight. I think if they would have made a hemi head for the 340, it would have been the Boss.
Doesn't sound like a 440 at all? Has the exhaust been changed?
Unpopular opinion: I love the 68 Charger too, but IMHO, the 69 was even cooler. I like the 70 too, but not quite as much. I think the front of the 68 is best, but the back of the 69 and 70 look the best.
Had a 68 with 383 magnum power plant . Light green with white vinyl roof whitewall ties just the plain Jane model no added badges . Don't know what the 383 magnum was some said it meant it had 440 heads ? . It did move three speed automatic top speed was ? I never found out. I would chicken out at 140 miles per hour. On the highway . Loved that car. But do did the cops lol

You know I love the 68,69,70 dodge charger they have beautiful body lines and the grills are so mean and look like it's going to suck in a mustang or camero into that grill and they have so many different types of engines for every type of person let me know what charger is your favourite I would love to know

Their's another guy who made a video with a 383 charger and it sounded lot more better than this one.
383 was under rated. Short stroke, like the 340, meant it was easily a 6500 RPM screamer.
These are great raw power time machines, but the twin turbo V10 Dodge Vipers are making 2200 HP they reach 358 KPH in 800 meters with a top speed of 387 KPH
Technology has come a long way, but the old and new have their own unique appeal.

@@christiansanden8005 agreed, I much prefer the round tail lights. Something about the open front grill seems meaner/raw gorgeous but not too refined to me and I like that.
