In this fishing episode Dan from Florida Fishing Couple and myself Heiko Winkler with South Florida Fishing Channel plan a standard catch and cook. We head offshore from Key Largo here in Florida. We went to target mahi and also do some bottom drifting. I'll show you my new bottom drifting rigs. I also show you my Mahi Pitcher with is a great offshore fishing rig that everyone should always have ready to go encase the mahi mahi show up!
Little did I know this fishing trip would end in a scary storm or me showing you how to eat fish eggs. Some people call fish eggs fish roe. So in this case mahi fish roe. Which are the mahi eggs. Or mahi roe. Ah so many different ways to say it!
We catch some great fish while fishing offshore. We catch mahi mahi. Perfect for a catch and cook. We feel good! Little did we know we would end up in a scary storm while fishing. Lots of wind and lightning while fishing is upon us!
After we catch mahi mahi out of Key Largo, Florida. We decide to head back to closer to shore to do some bottom drifting on our bottom drifting rig. You can find where to buy fishing bottom drifting rigs in the links above this text.
We catch some great fish so it's funny that I end up eat fish eggs. Fish eggs actually taste good! Especially these mahi eggs. You'll see us get fish eggs during the catch clean cook part of this fish egg catch and cook episode.
Then it happens. We get caught in a scary storm while fishing. Very strong wind while fishing. And lightning while fishing all around us. This was bad and scary! But we live!
Then I proceed with the catch clean cook. I will show you how to eat fish roe. Thanks Florida Fishing Couple for getting the fish eggs out of the mahi mahi. I will show you how to eat fish eggs. Fish egg is good to eat and high in protein. The Perfect fishing snack!
I hope you enjoyed this Scary! Fishing in 40+ mph wind and lightning Fish Egg Catch and Cook fishing episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel. I have some awesome fishing videos in production! Please leave a like and comment to show your support. Thank you!

Ok, I may be a little biased here but I think this video is your best ever! I laughed, I cried, it was awesome! It was so realistic, I almost felt like I was there!! By the way, who is that awesome fishing partner you were with? He is very cool!! :-). Great video; glad we made it back in one piece so you could post that amazing, albeit scary day. Let this be a lesson to all who visit our beautiful Keys; a storm can brew up in an instant. Be careful. - Capt. Dan

Like you said, great lesson for those not familiar with Florida just how fast those storms can pop up and how violent they can be. Stay safe Capt. Dan and Capt. Heiko.

I want to let u know that when I lived in Pasco county several years ago my best good friend and I were put in a very similar situation, but I owned a 19' cc with a 115fourstroke Yamaha. What we went through would change our friendship bond forever. We calculated upwards 50mph winds 6'swells with a 3'storm chop my cockpit had 10" of rain lighting strikes close to my boat ! When it struck the seas the flash was redish orange as it struck the waves. One lighting strike struck the fishing rod in the rocket launcher on top of my t-top sending the deep sea okuma to the floor which we found out after we made it out by of the storm. Fuckt up shit! At one point we lost our instruments so I navigated by compass. I was heading due east at 40knots some how got spun around a complete 180degrees heading west not in control at all. Sorry for the long message but I have watched you from the beginning and I feel we have a stormy brother hood connection thanks for true stories and just for your info there is no dry ride boats . LoL

I have a couple things for ya.
    1. When in sloppy conditions such as what you encountered keep your head up, stop looking down for a couple reasons. One you are taking your eyes off what is coming up another boat, floating debris lost lobster trap stuff you don't want to hit. Second that is how you blow out your neck. I have a C3-T1 fusion. Putting your head down while pounding around is gonna play hell on your c-spine.
Not much you can do about your knees, feet and lower back except ride through it.
#2. The reason your compass went haywire is more than likely due to all the magnets that were placed around it. Cell phones, cameras and other items in close proximity. The odds of dual loss of Gps/plotter and compass at the same time are pretty astronomical. Next time clear all the stuff from under over and next to the compass. Last ditch use the compass on your phone or download the navionocs app it will at least point you in the correct direction.
Next would be you checked the radar on your phone and knew the direction it was coming from and moving towards. Obviously when you started your run home you were taking the seas on the chin therefore you aren't going to have a following sea 2 min later. Use that radar app to find the thinnest part of the storm and head for that, yep it's going to rain out and build back over that thinner portion however it you time it correctly you just might get lucky and miss the absolutely worst of it.
Running lights on, absolutely should have had PFD on as well as EPIRB located in a spot such as your pocket or inside your rain coat in the event you rolled or where thrown.
I have been in several storms in West Central FL Clearwater Beach to be exact.
The absolutely worst was on a commercial trip on my 40 Dorado. High pressure system set up off the east coast and just like that we had an easterly wind of 45-50kts. Since the wind was blowing from shore to offshore we had a tall stacked sea of 8-12 ft with 3 seconds between them and 95 miles to go.
In laymans terms it was like standing rapids in a river. The bow would just clear the top of a swell and before it could ride down the back side the next wave was crashing over the boat. It was my last night on the grounds when this monster kicked up, 3 am I woke to pots and pans falling onto the deck and I looked up with my spot light to see nothing but whitewater up over top of us.
It was very dangerous as we had the anchor out and hsd to pull it without turning or getting broadside to the swell.
Needless to say the 5.4kt ride home realllly sucked. I had my epirbs at the ready and called my wife from the sat phone every 30 min with our exact gps location and our speed and eta to port. I told her if she didn't hear back from me within 40 min to call the USCG with my last known position and speed, heading ect.
Storms pop up despite the best technology we have at out disposal. I had Sirius XM weather on my Garmin and had wx on the VHF each day and night listening for updates and changes and none of models forecasted the hell we were painfully plowing through.
We heard several mayday calls on our ride home. Once we pushed in 40 mile from where we were it started laying down to 6-8ft then down to 4-6 ft by 30 miles to go.
Took us 9-10 hours to get out there on day one of the trip and this was day 6. It took us over 24 hours to reach the pass.
It was nerve racking to say the least.

      Bennett,
Awesome redact. Sounds like you have been in the slop one to many times bro.
In your opinion what is the best/safest handling mid size boat (21 to 24 feet) under similar conditions?
In other words (considering a well skilled captain) if you knew you had to slice a storm, which mid size boat would you know, is going to get you back home safely?

      @@jejoko whew hard one.
That size range is tough because we all saw the snot they were running in and let me be the first to say video and pics do the actual sea state zero justice so I know how they really felt no bueno so I would say NOTHING 😂
If I had to pick one 23-24ft range I would go with something with a closed transom vs open like they have. The open can allow a following sea to push up into the boat while climbing and surfing. I would want twins for the weight at the stern so I can use that to my advantage pushing through and working my tabs into the head sea to really plow or ride bow proud.
Contender makes a nice boat the older shamrocks with single inboard another good option.
Kinda on both ends of the spectrum there
Not a bay boat! Something with a sharp 24° dead rise ish at the stern with plenty of freeboard.
Sea hunt makes a decent boat but the top tier boats are there for a reason other than name sake.
Yellowfin, seavee, contenders, I don't really care for Grady or whalers just my opinion.
There really isn't a perfect boat for those conditions because you can sink just as fast on a 140k as a 15k boat.
For my dollar sea hunter 24 is a pretty good value the other names new you are gonna be up there on price

    • @jejoko
      @jejoko 5 лет назад

      @@grouperkng1
Thank you for getting back to me.
Oh yeah I definitely agree on a closed transom and twins. And yes video or pictures do sea conditions no justice at all. I currently have a 21 foot Zodiac with twin 70's and she can handle some slop, but man is it a bumpy ride to say the least. More like riding a jack hammer especially when the waves are short stacked. And of course she doesn't have a cabin. Just a t-top and a side to side windshield.
What are your thoughts on a 22 x 8.5 foot welded aluminum cabin boat, with a 20 degree dead rise, closed transom, self bailing deck, with 550 gallons of sealed foam filled buoyancy built into the exterior sides of the haul including the transom, with twins and trim tabs?

Back in 1990, way back when. I took a direct lightning hit on my Hatteras traveling to Ocean City Maryland to fish the White Marlin Tournament. It knocked out all of our electronics and did some minor engine damage to exhaust sensors, as well as gremlins though the boat for the remaining years I owned it. It was on the Delaware Bay and the rain and wind were fierce. On my current boat I paid for Sirius XM Weather and it has been great. Lightning as you know from that close hit is very very scary. I know I don't want to do it again. Also, you never know who else out there is like you guys running through the storm blind. Next to the lightning that would be my biggest concern. Yeah...wear the vests... I know Capt. Dan has an inflatable... both of you should wear one. Just sayn. Good video too.

Hats off to Dan, that was the epitome of keeping your cool. It is always easy to think you will be able to handle that type of pressure but much harder to perform in the face of chaos.
What would be helpful for others would be to hear from people that have experienced a similar situation and what key strategies helped them navigate and get home safely. Having some point of reference with a compass heading prior to the storm reaching you could at least get you pointed in the right direction if your electronics go out. This also can be difficult with the lightning all around causing compass irregularities. I was surprised with the lightning strikes so close that the GPS survived. I would be shocked if some of your electronics are not compromised in the future so if anything strange starts to happen down the road keep that in mind.
I am not sure you could have done much better except for having your life jackets on but you already knew that. Dan fantastic job keeping your cool, your facial expressions say it all as your composure and focus was impressive.

Rule of thumb when your electronics take a crap, like many in the threads, ya should have had a cellphone with some apps to assist you. In closing hopefully your 21 system was up, if ya lost it, I invested in redundancy after learning my lessons a few times, but ya got back, or this video clip wouldn’t be showing the rest of us what a true ass whooping is like on a relatively small walk around.

Unfortunately, been there and done that, and my tower got hit by lightning, up here out of Daytona area, and even though you have it all on video, most people don't realize how scary it really is being in that situation. The video does no justice to how it really looks and how bad the situation really is. After my experience I get anxious every time I hear thunder. Glad you made it back safe!

Thanks for sharing the experience. The cooking of the fish Roe brought back some fond memories of my dad, when he used to take me fishing and introduced me to eating fish roe. Since that time I've eaten a many types, both fresh and saltwater varieties. The way I was taught was to just wrap the sack in a strip of bacon , salt, pepper to taste. Frying it up the same as you did.

That storm reminds me of a fishing trip in Savannah, GA, that I experienced. The Sky Grew Black from the Rain filled Winds, which whipped up 15 foot Monster Waves, dropping Visibility to about 100 feet in the Savannah River Shipping Channel. All eyes were Wide Open, Looking for a Huge Ship to Pop up directly in Front of the Boat, with little time to avoid a Collision. Thunderous Lightning was Frantically reaching out from the Sky, and we were Hoping it wouldn't grab hold of our Outriggers. The Squall only lasted 10 - 15 minutes, yet seemed to last forever. We survived this Memorial ride, suffering from a bit of Shock from the Brutal Power this Storm had displayed. The Calm after the Storm provided a Joyous Relief, and a Wonderful Memory.

Good job Captain Dan navigating. Not fun. I've been in these storms before. When lightning strikes very close you go death & blind for a few seconds due to flash of the lightning & sound of the thunder. When anchored & wet you can feel electricity get you. Thats time to go in the cabin & pray for it to pass. Once the storm does pass the ocean turns into a swimming pool. Very calm & flat.

  • @DHKEYWEST1
    @DHKEYWEST1 4 года назад

The ocean can get a lot worse. We were 80 miles off savannah on a mill pond day when the coast guard shouted over the radio, SEVERE MARINE WARNING FROM CHARLESTON TO DAYTONA BEACH BOATERS SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. We were tearing up mahi on a big weed line and picked up and started running in. 40 miles out it hit us, they recorded winds at hunter army base 83 mph, waves went to 12 feet. We were in a 25 foot boat and I said just pull the throttles back and let the storm pass. But it was one storm after another. I thought the boat was going to flip bow over stern. I was afraid we were in a down burst which generates winds over 100 mph and 40 foot waves. We ran out of gas 8 miles offshore. Another boat brought us fuel and it was still so rough the fuel tanks were dropped in the ocean and we pulled them to the boat. We left at 2 am and got back at midnight. I could barely climb out the boat I was so beat up. Tore my right shoulder. Other boats caught in the storm had broken arms and cracked ribs. I read an article many moons ago where a storm came ripping off Texas and into the gulf that generated 100 mph winds and 80 foot waves. It looked like your storm did not extend to the lower keys. I would have run west to avoid it. If your GPS went out the clouds were probable over 50,000 feet. I have had the marine weather fail in extremely bad storms. Yes lightning will hit you. I been hit 3 times.

Wow! Brother, That was indeed a Harrowing experience. So glad you guys made it unscathed. I have been through the same ordeal offshore as a Deckhand and Captain on Sportfishing Boats and 100 ton Crew Boats in 40+ knot winds and 25 ft seas raining sideways there's no hiding from it. All your electronics going out can be pretty scary especially with the lightning you two went thru. Wow! And to film it so others can see that maybe they need to be prepared for anything is commendable. Maybe re-title it Row Row Roe Yer Boat...
Fair winds and following Seas my Brother
    Peace
