  • After working as a designer for a residential interior design firm, and now working for my own interior business, I'm sharing my tips for decorating your home while also dealing with very real budgets. The one thing that working with clients has taught me: EVERYONE has a budget. There will always be places any client needs to save, and price-friendly stores like IKEA can play a very helpful role here. The key is BALANCE. In this video, I'm sharing my approach to striking that balance in your space, and in your budget. I hope it's helpful!
I'm making a trip to IKEA to help decorate my own apartment, and I'm talking through what to BUY and what to AVOID in order to accessorize, furnish and decorate your home on a budget. There are lots of tricks for furnishing your home without blowing out your budget. Can't wait to share this one with you!

I'm 61 and my husband passed in 2019, so for the first time since I was 19 I'm living on my own and back then I'd only had 1 apartment for 1 year that I had on my own...so I get the whole "me all the time" thing. It's taken me a bit to figure out what I like, what works solely for me, what system is mine. But, as much as I miss my dear husband, I kind of like it and I too wonder about my ability to compromise...not that I'm too worried about it at my age. I've been slowly redoing, refreshing room after room on a budget...so I really appreciated this video. I love your channel by the way...always looking forward to new videos.

My "pro tip" as an amateur flower designer/arranger is to invest in opaque vases (like that very pretty white fluted ceramic vase) as it can be used with floral foam inside to precisely hold your arrangement and keep the flowers hydrated. One can also strip off the lower leaves (which extends the freshness of the blooms) without making your arrangement appear to be floating on top of sticks in the clear glass. Clear glass is pretty in a bud vase with one stunning rose, but a large clear glass vase gets to be messy and even scary (what is that brown water?!) very fast.

Good idea. Also clear vases, lovely as they are, can get stained - so opaque could look good for longer =)

I feel like the guiding principle for decorating on a budget should be to take your time. Buy good quality, timeless pieces that will last decades. No one needs to decorate a whole room in a month. If you really *need* something, but can't afford exactly what you want, buy it second hand, and wait. Most people who try to decorate on a budget fall into the trap of having to replace crappy furniture every few years, and they end up always having garbage from Target, IKEA, Walmart, etc. Do not assume your finances will be radically different, and put off decent decor until "someday." Scrimp and save, and buy it piece by piece. You'll save money in the long run not have to re-buy the same cheap looking Target couch over and over again.
(You also avoid tacky trends that way, because you have to think really carefully about what you're going to like for the next twenty years, instead of the next three.)

    • @LivingForThis
      @LivingForThis Год назад +10

Exactly! I'm currently moving to a new house, I will use my current shitty furniture from Amazon that I bought when I was a student, and wait until they fall apart to buy better quality stuff, especially in real wood, if possible second hand :)

This!! My family are still using the couch set my dad bought decades ago when he jokingly said he'd spend all of the money the made on a project on a sofa, then ended up getting more money than he expected. Sofa's still holding up well (a nice sofa cover helped). Definitely cheaper in the long run than three different sofa sets.

I would love a follow up video showing using all the things in your space, especially the pink plate set, and if the weight of those dishes felt right. Maybe any regrets or opinions on things that didn’t work out as well. I always buy stuff at IKEA that doesn’t end up the way I envisioned and also lots of stuff that ends up way better then I thought it would. I would love that kind of video. Thanks! I love your channel.

Your "pre IKEA" mental prep is 100% accurate. One time we went into IKEA to buy like one kallax shelf for our playroom, and I bought so many other things I wasn't sure it would all fit in our vehicle. Never again lol. I don't go without a list any more!
The greenish oval dish is great for serving things like pork tenderloin or other grilled items like Italian sausage etc. It's also good for serving cookies, biscotti, or a veggie tray. It's a good size for small crowds, but that said, I think you were smart to pass. I prefer white serving dishes, all kinds of textures, but I stick with all white. It makes it easy when everything matches for parties. I add lots of color with flowers and table linens and things like that.

I'm 68, have a house that's fully furnished (no trends, thank you!) and I love Ikea! Almost everything is so cute, and I did drop some dollars there. To furnish my guest bedroom, I gave myself permission to buy two white side tables to go with the 1970s maple full-size bed that I grew up with. It all looks so cute, and I'm glad to know, from a designer, that it's okay. New subscriber, love your channel and your outlook.

I just love your design videos because each one contains at least a single comment that totally unlocks or re-frames a barrier I'd been circling around fruitlessly. The bit about the credenza not needing to bring down the house (or wtvr) led me to realize that my 4-drawer-all-white-composite-material-dresser-from-Target doesn't need ~elevation~ when it's already pulling its weight. It provides closed storage, a standing desk with a customized slide out keyboard rack, and a sturdy anchor for the other white elements in an otherwise black metal dominated room. Plus I'm now frothing rabidly for an interstate trip to Ikea, which is like the Montana equivalent of connecting to the internet for the first time after a decade of being raised as a feral child in the woods... Culture!

I also do the Ikea-Prep and bring my list, the measurements of my space and my own tape measure. I wanted to share that it is so reassuring to me, that I am not the only one who has this routine. I may also spend time ahead in their online shop, if I need some extra orientation. I could not make it through Ikea without prepping; that is a big store! 😉 Thanks for this!

I love IKEA. I get all cozy and warm feeling when I go there. Their curtains and sheer style panels are the best The quality is amazing and they are affordable. But the best thing for me is because they come so long, I can custom fit them to my weird size window heights in my home. I hang them, pin them and then hand sew the hems with a quick running stitch while still on the rod. I affixed a ring clip to one end at the top of the curtain and then attached a dowel rod with an eye hook at the top and use the dowel rod to open and close the panels. This prevents the panels from picking up any oils from my hands. The bottom pocket of the hem allows for curtain weights (or light weight chain or even extra butter knives) to be slipped in to keep the panels weighted down. Can you tell I’m very into IKEA curtain panels…. Frankly all their textiles are the bomb. I have two down comforters from them that have lasted me over 15 years.

There in Sweden we have lots of century old buildings with odd measurements such as three or four meter high walls and almost meter thick outer walls. That may have something to do with IKEA also having tall curtains available.

I always look in the "scratch and dent" area first. You just never know what you'll find. I got a teak etagere and bath bench years ago that Ikea doesn't produce anymore. I guess they were floor models because they were SO cheap (but otherwise in perfect condition). And I still use them and love them...15 years later.

Several years ago, Consumer Reports did an issue featuring kitchen remodeling. Of the top five cabinet sources for good quality and value, IKEA, The Home Depot, and Lowe's were listed. Everyone and their granny visits IKEA at the weekend! Which can be fun, but quiet times there are truly lovely. There is something thereputic about IKEA. So many shops are just overwhelming and scarey expensive.
I think my joy in IKEA are all the room layouts, the possibiities, in which I may never indulge, but are still a delight to see. What I really love about IKEA are the wee things I find, like the wooden (bamboo?) phone holders for £1.99 that are actually properly useful and make life better.
Can NEVER leave IKEA without candles and sissors. Weird. I think in the middle of the night there is a march of the sissors back to IKEA because they are definitely NOT where I left them - hence always need more! That'll be where their real profits come from!
Great shop.Great experience - they have definitely found a special formula that grabs me and makes me feel at ease and as if I could maybe pull together a room I can afford (AND that could look good too mixed and matched with heirlooms and secondhand treasures)
Caroline, great self restraint, BUT I do think you should go back for the pretty pink glass dish - until you find your puppy it would be lovely holding fruit.
Thankyou, fair enjoyed joining you on a wee shoping trip!

Holy cow, spacial anxiety is a great term for the difficulty I've had for years! Too many people I don't know in a confined space or bunched up together is a really rough one for me. The first time I went to an Ikea was on a busy Saturday and I almost had a panic attack, way way way too many people, all right on top of each other, and you can't escape! I literally had to go put myself in a corner where I couldn't see anyone and actively shut everything out for a few minutes to calm myself down. I've struggled a bit with going to Ikea since then despite liking a fair bit of their stuff. It sounds stupid but I'm really glad to hear I'm not the only freak that struggles with this, thank you Caroline!

IKEA was also way out of my price range. I've still only been to an IKEA once with my old roommates. This video gives me so many ideas for how to get aesthetic basics, because my price range for basics is still low, but my tastes have evolved since I first moved out on my own and bought everything at Dollar Tree.

I'm moving out for the first time next week and have been preparing for my IKEA trip, so this is perfect timing. The ego trip of being able to control my own space is very much settling in for me aswell, haha.
You're insanely funny and give really solid advice. Thank you.

Found your channel recently and binge watched a bunch. I love how personal and chill you are. It's like going shopping with my best friend (who happens to be exactly like me). Also, totally random, but I love that you live in my "neck of the woods". There are so many youtubers that live someplace sunny all the time. Nothing personal, no hate to those people, just a rant from a 4 seasons state dweller. Keep up the good work!

What fantastic bargins! Love that you aren't snooty. I was once in HOme Goods (LOVE HOME GOODS) and a lady was with her interior decorator. The guy said to his client, "you have a VERY expensive house, why could you want to fill it with cheap stuff." He was so stuck up. Then the client seemed intimidated.

I LOVE my soderhamn lol. It’s super deep and supportive and the modular design is great for a budget since it lets you collect pieces over time. It’s light enough to move around too. Right now I have a two-seater couch and a one-seater piece that I use as a chair, but I’m hoping to get a corner piece and turn the whole thing into a sectional when I move into a bigger place.

Haha, I 100% agree that these cookies are the best ever! Ten years ago, I told a (then) colleague, who went to IKEA for some office updating, that they are worth a try. Guess who ended up getting said cookies next day ;) Oh, and a ring on the finger three years later.
On that note: never worry about not being able to compromise enough for a relationship any more. Because you should never compromise on being you. Yes, making everyday life together work takes work and may mean that you have to do a thing or two differently for the sake of your partner's wellbeing. But never put the existence of a relationship over being yourself at the end of the day. Oh, and always only go for the guy (or girl) who brings you your favourite cookies.
