    Don’t hesitate to walk away if you show up and the piece isn’t what you expected or has unpictutes damage. My passive self used to end up getting it anyway because I didn’t want to be rude. Then I realized the seller is the rude one for being misleading with the listing! They wasted your time, not the other way around.

    I got my dining room table off Facebook Marketplace, it was originally from pottery barn so probably very expensive. I only paid a couple hundred for a very nice solid wood dining table. The lady said her kids would always sit there and do homework and one day her son was really sick of math so he carved poop into the table. It took me 4 months to find it and it makes me smile every time I see it now. Such a funny unique thing!

      my dinning table is funky - its bar height heavy as all get out golden oak. it has the weathered bug eaten look but i'm okay with it as my kids are hard on my furniture. its a perfect 40" square without leaf and fits great in my apt dining room .. one day I'll get around to restaining it a light walnut color. the lady who sold it to me was moving cross country her kids were grown and wanted it to go to a great home . her kids did homework at that table, ate thanksgiving and everything at it. the lovely folks even helped us lug it into the pickup 6 chairs and all.

    WARNING for those who love antique vintage glassware !! Super important to know , almost all vintage teacups, colored glass, especially crystal uses LEAD!! Yes lead. Here are some of the symtoms : Abdominal pain.
    Constipated.
    Tired.
    Headachy.
    Irritable.
    Loss of appetite.
    Memory loss.
    Pain or tingling in the hands and/or feet.
    Cognitive decline
    I LOVE vintage antique everything especially antique tea cups, crystal and colored glass as well but nearly all of it contained high amounts of lead. And you are literally drinking lead as it leeches off . So many studies on this throughout 90's. Remember those vintage 90's McDonald's Disney colored tinted glasses , so many children got poisoned from the Lead. This is why it got banned from being used and you will notice alot of dishware says "lead free" now. It's even more toxic and dangerous for children.
    Vintage painting and furniture contains lead as well, but the absolute worse is dishware as it's injected.
    My home is 95% second hand finds, in past year two of my favorite purchases were a green pinstripe settee and vintage retro dining chairs . After a few weeks of both I noticed above symtoms . Both were super toxic with lead dyes, and paint, and also spores from interior. They looked pristine and most maybe would not notice , but after living and using you start to notice not feeling that well, headache , congestion ..
    Please research , I am not exaggerating this .
    P.s love your channel

      Yes, most of the time, brand new elements look terrible and cheap in a room full of "slightly used and worn" furniture. Most things can be completely sanitized before you bring them in your house. I bought a 12 x 14' rug that was perfect for my living room, for $15.00. I scrubbed the hell out of it in the driveway, front and back and literally hosed it off many times while my friend squeegeed it off. I live in FL so this has to be done in the Spring or Fall when there are very dry winds and sun so it can dry that same day. New, that rug would have cost well over 800, but it did take me the whole day to clean it.
      All sofa cushions have zippers so you can wash them but the trick it to put them back on while still wet. Same goes for draperies, hang them while wet, they will hang beautifully.

    @Caroline, I’ve paused the video at 16 minutes to add another tip. Especially when you live in a big metro area. If you find something you really like on fb marketplace, you’re weighing whether or not to pursue it, I ALWAYS click on the seller pic of the item and see what else they’re listing to sell. Another item might make the trip to get said 1st item worthwhile. Or, you might see pics of their home in other listings and decide that you’re not up for the heeby jeeby cooties because their house was gross. But, I always check their seller profile because if you like the one item, maybe you have similar tastes. Or maybe they’re changing decor styles and have other curated pieces that can help you out. If so, there’s your foot in the door for trying to bargain.

    This made me think of a video idea that would be really helpful to me, and maybe to others too, if you were interested in making it: How to extrapolate a full room design from the 3-4 pieces (for example, some amazing FB marketplace finds) that you know you want to incorporate somehow in the space.

  • @TheDriftwoodlover
    @TheDriftwoodlover Год назад +34

    Good tips … here are some of mine: if you see something interesting, “save” it because sometimes it’s hard to find again. Pay attention to how long it’s been listed, if several weeks and I’m holding back due to price, I will make a lower offer. On upholstered furniture, go in close and sniff it before you buy. I bought a sofa in consignment shop and when I got it home and sat on it, could tell it had been in a storage facility a long time. It smelled like concrete. I intended to have it cleaned but the scent lingered even after I did. Also turn over furniture. Bought a chair a guy had in a storage place. He was ready for me even though I was early and had it up on a rolling cart. I sat on it but didn’t tip it over. He loaded it for me … so that I couldn’t see a spring was extended down. It won’t be used much but he didn’t come down on price and I grossly overpaid for a damaged chair. Because you can see the spring from across the room it limits where I can place it. And this wasn’t priced inexpensively. It was my own fault. When search, try many different ways. It’s odd how some people list furniture. Some people call nightstands “dressers.”

    • @rockshot100
      @rockshot100 Год назад +3

      @driftwood, It is amazingly easy to retie springs, just look on RUclips. You just need a little twine, and you can see how the other springs are tied together. VERY easy fix here. OR an upholsterer can retie that spring for you, chances are, if that one spring came undone the others may be loose as well. It should cost you very little, but call in advance and get a price. This is NOT a big deal.

      @JacyndaMinor Год назад +4

      Yeah that guy definitely knew what he was doing! That sucks. Alternatively, I love when people are super up front about flaws, it makes me more interested in the item. I recently asked a lady about a buffet table and she basically told me (really nicely) to go look again and be sure about it bc it was really small, and even though she had listed the dimensions in the description she was right I hadn’t really considered them, bc it was too small. She sells a lot of stuff so she seemed to know intuitively that dummies like me may not be fully aware of _how small_ exactly. I’ve also found that men are more likely to rush you and more likely to lie or omit things, at least in Tennessee.
      Also in Tennessee, to your last point, I tend to see people misspell certain things certain ways so I will do a search for the things that I can’t stand to see but still see nonetheless, like “dinning room table” (it’s *insane* how common this mistake is) and another big one is “chester drawers” or “draws” like, what? stop that

    • @thirdspacemaker9141
      @thirdspacemaker9141 Год назад +3

      @@JacyndaMinor LOL. Chester drawers is how my family says it. I was probably in high school before I figured out that someone is “liable to” do something. If you spelled it how my family says it, someone is “lobbles to” do it.

    Historically most beds were "twins" or "doubles" but in the mid-1940s larger mattresses were introduced by manufacturers. These were later standardized as "queen" and "king", and first made a significant impact on the market in the 1950s and 60s.

      Do you know why? Men coming home from WWII weren't the same men who left their wives behind anymore. The men had to re-acclimate to civilian/peace-time life and their wives had to get to know the men their husbands had become. Beds designed for good sleep hygiene/habits aren't great for intimacy. Women were considered frigid for not getting down to business as quickly as the men were ready to and cosleeping encourages intimacy. They needed to replace the fallen soldiers! I'm sure it also got folded into the whole agenda of making the future newer, shinier, and more stream lined. The New Ways and New Things and what not.

    I only buy my garden pots and material off FM now because it's so much cheaper than buying it new. And they'll often already come with plants inside them or their own potting soil! Also, such an interesting point about smaller/rural areas vs big metros. I live in a small city in West Texas, so I have always assumed it was a disadvantage compared to somewhere like Austin, San Antonio, DFW or Houston. But we do have a lot of old, but high quality gently used items for sale here, that's true.

    Hi. Caroline! That was a very helpful vid- thanks! One thing: be careful with antique "twin" sized beds. Some take a 3/4 size mattress, which are expensive and can be hard to find. Love the corner chair, and the cane bench. I like Jenny Lind ( Swedish opera singer) and Eastlake Victorian furniture, too. Hubby and l have Eastlake in the BR. I found and purchased an early 20th century (antique at this point) / pre-WWII Persian Mahal (lower quality of the artisan rugs) rug 17x6 ft rug on FB Marketplace for $75! It was in some rough shape but I didn’t want to pass on such a unique find! It’s beautiful. I got to talk to the seller and get to know a pleasant lady.

    Hello sweet Caroline, we LOVE your helpful hints! We actually love looking on Facebook Marketplace, and duh, we never thought of putting "vintage" or "glassware" We always just kinda look through everything. That corner chair is awesome! We honestly have never seen a chair like that. As always, great video. Sending big hugs to you 😊

    I am very familiar with Pottery Barn merchandise. A few years ago someone listed a janky lamp as Pottery Barn (and asking an exorbitant price as well). I inquired what model it was as I wasn’t familiar with it. The seller angrily replied that she didn’t want to sell to me, lol. I did buy a $1200 Pottery Barn hand-knotted wool rug for $100 from a different seller. I have three cats 🐱 so I wanted a nice rug but wasn’t willing to pay a lot of money for it.

    In all your spare time that you don’t have, would you consider doing the following videos: 1. Combining furniture styles (I like eclectic, mid century m, boho and I find that I have a hard time pairing items and understand what is what and how to mesh it together 2. Favorite high quality furniture brands to look for when antiquing/thrifting/market placing (in addition to west elm and crate&barrel)
    Thank you!

    Teal is the one color that looks good on all skin tones and hair color, so I've been told. It's great for a beach theme, but beyond that in homes it is a challenge, I think. I just made my first buy on FBmp for a lawyers bookcase that I've always wanted. I wasn't even really looking, but there it was. Everything you said is true. I enjoyed the short drive and getting to meet someone when we are new to the area, and hearing a bit about the piece she was selling. It had some light repair of the wood buttons that needed replacement and that was a 2-day small project, and makes it even more mine. It polished up beautifully and I'm so happy to have it. I love your channel since I found it yesterday. Never thought I'd want to listen to a designer because they all seem so unrealistic, non-practical, and trendy, all of which I am not. I wish I could convince my minimalism husband to watch your videos as we discuss how to furnish design this unique new home. All my antiques are relegated to my office and the spare bedroom! Thank you for at least getting me!

    I share your aversion to teal. I know exactly where my dislike of the color comes from. As a kid, somehow I often got the crayon that was either blue-green or green-blue. They are the exact same color and very teal/aqua.

    I think many who instantly click on "Is this item available?" without expressing interest are just doing so to "bookmark" it for themselves. It initiates a conversation with the seller, even if they have no intention of following up immediately. But before I figured that out, I was 100% super annoyed to get those messages. I just stopped replying to them and only answer the ones with a real message. :-) This is a great video. Many of these tipes were very helpful. Thank you!!
