Can all TED talks be like this? Sweet, concise, and actually innovative.
I used to attend a high school in a very low- income area and of course; we couldn't afford the interactive smart boards which basically every other school had at least a few of. My math teacher who was so passionate about education and technology adopted this system of a budget interactive whiteboard to make her teaching more visual and enhancing and seeing this video, I feel so grateful for some reason. Great work Johnny! Your work really did enable less advantaged people to maintain the technological advancements that everyone else was achieving.
Johnny Lee deserved the standing ovation...
It's not just about his current experiments, but on how many people it can affect, and how accessible he made it for the general public.
Great stuff! Happy to see some game development companies are already considering doing something with the idea!
Good o'l days of youtube... back when you couldn't get copyright infringement for a background coke bottle, and Google+.
I dont see no coke ?...
Haha it's gotten worse hasn't it?
Funny now the time this comment was posted is now considered “the good ol’days”
@@rynlikesfood And now we finally got rid of Google+ 😂
This hits harder now.
I made my own Wiimote Whiteboard and used it in one of my classes: It was amazing! Johnny Lee is a genius, and he certainly deserves an award for sharing his knowledge with everyone.
8 years later, no real head tracking compatibility games...
oclus rift? htc vive?
BenjerminGaye different kind of head tracking. That uses absolute position relative to the screen. The headsets use relative tracking based on compass position.
+Collegiate Match Fishing no oculus rift uses it tracking just like this
+Ben Laty *ir
Why the need for the headset display then? I mean this demo uses head tracking software and an IR camera with a pair of LEDs attached to some safety glasses to create a 3 dimensional effect on a 2d TV screen, why then, are developers opting to mount stereoscopic displays in chunky visors? Surely this eliminates the need for VR... more to the point we've had a generational leap in home consoles with another one due soon since this video and no-one's developed a game around this very simple set up.
I bet Nintendo wasn't very happy about that.
I dunno, the 3DS employs a similar technology that can achieve similar results
*Nintendo proceeds to tax Lee here for every Wii Remote he uses to spread his technology
@@ethanrussell3163 No it doesn't
Every time I come back to this video, I always smile at 3:55 because you can tell the camera guy is having fun.
this mans brilliant AND owns a wii. Checkmate, Sony?
This should be the best comment, lol
well sony's ps3's are being used as a supercomputer....
BenjerminGaye PFFT
@@BenjerminGaye lmao no they arent LUL
@@girlsdrinkfeck not anymore, but when it released yes. You could run another OS on it and daisy chain them to act as a server/supercomputer.
I saw this when it came out, this is what opened me up to the TED talk world, wish they would do more like this!
Now its 2014, where is it now? do people still know about this?
Nope, and I have no clue why no company is selling this, they could make a fortune.
Ultragian Awesome, thanks bro
He is also working with Google on a 3d tracking project called project Tango. Look it up, its cool
Ben Akinlosotu Yeah saw it, kind of scary tho since it could/will be used for visual datamining
Now its 2018, where is it now? do people still know about this?
Watching this in 2023 and still amazed. Unfortunately it the software hasn't been updated so I feel like I can't get it done.
This is damn amazing, but I'd really like if he took a deep breath sometimes...
don't be nervous, man. you did great
that 3d looks amazing! I don't have fusion between my eyes and this looked fantastic for me! I think this is the first time I have seen 3d
You just owned some of the most brilliant inventers in the world. This is pure inovation for everyone! Thanks for thinking, Mr Lee! ;)
3:07 that awkward clap.. Lel
Yogsther lmao
One of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Such a simple things, but with massive applications. Genius.
That's an interesting kind of passive 3D.
you're a open source / innovation hero i remember watching your youtube videos a couple months ago.. wow now your here .. you rock dude!
looks like theres another way to see 3D withought glasses on youtube, Amazing!
Hey Johnny, thank you so much for this. My very small English school has been struggling to compete with the big rich companies, but I now have an interactive white board which may give me a chance to compete on a different level, all thanks to you. You are changing the world my friend. I can't express how grateful I am for your present to us.
This guy is a legend!
I love how when he starts to use it, he has the audience captivated and amazed. I Love it. Its like the audience has no idea what he is talking about until he actually starts to show them a demonstration of what it does, then their like OOH!!! AHH!!!! He IS The GURU of this stuff!!!!
Why is this guy not developing VR for Switch
the most remarkable thing about this guy is the fact he did not care about making any profit out of this idea. He developed the thing himself at his own costs and just gave it away to the public. No copyrights, no fucking patents. Truly free invention.
the rest of the world should learn to be more like Johnny Lee
So where is his website?

Hi just a big thank yoou for sharing the link
+Jean-Baptiste Lasselle That new search engine google put out rocks!
Wow, I have seen that before but I have to say Johnny Lee is incredibly smart and really well spoken, which is nice to see in the research community.
man we need head tracking everywhere! XD haha I can imagine them remaking the game Punch-Out! from NES with head tracking and gloves XD.
10 years, still amazing
Anyone watching this for the portfolio task??
me lmao
Some good old TED talk times...
How to get cheap oculous rift glasses
Such a humble boy.
Nintendo finally patented this idea some days ago. Future here we come! :)
That's interesting, do you still have a source by any chance?
if you watch his demo that he filmed at home, getting closer to the screen makes the objects appear closer, so it does have a complete track of 3D space.
What ever happened to this stuff?
We all got scared and ran out of imagination.
A well-deserved standing ovation indeed.
He's using existing technology, none of the stuff he's showcasing requires you to be particularly smart.
But the very fact that he even thought of these projects, started them, and broadcasted them on the internet, and his approach to the entire thing, makes him one of the worlds little day-to-day heroes in my book. A genuine good guy with a healthy curiousity!
This guy is a genius and really doing what we wish all game developers should do. great thinking man
We need more people like Johnny Lee, you inspire me....Thank you!!!
Makes me smile no matter how many times I see this.
If you shutter the left and right lenses of those glasses to match a rapidly alternating image on the screen, you can have true depth perception AND head tracking. And if you have pupil tracking cameras mounted on the glasses, you can even have eye tracking data that would feed into the computer giving high fidelity field of depth changing in real time with the natural focusing movements of the eyes.
Man so much cool stuff happened in the 00s
a standing ovation! OF COURSE!
we need more people like him! MOAR!!! MOAR!!!!
wow, i remember watching his vids a while ago. glad his talents have been recognised now
@pwoitalla nope, he use the wii camera to track his hand's contact-point and movement, and the contact-point does not limited to 2
TED Technology Entertainment and Design... this man fulfilled all three!
I'm in 2020 and this is still impressive!
Johnny Lee is the man! He's work (eventhough that kind of a digital tracking is already "an old thing" for the professionals, but he's making it stuffs for the masses!) is going to have a huge impact in the upcoming years. He's just that kind of a "nice-guy-from-your-neighbour", who just happens to kick MAJOR ASS with his work! Inspiring stuff.
I'm sure Johnny must have felt good to see the entire audience instantaneously stand to give him a ovation. Bravo! and post more videos will your Johnny?
Awesome!!!... What we'll see in the future whit guy like this... I think I'm going to cry.
Yes! He's research is getting the attention it deserves! I'm glad youtube helped him get there. As soon as EA announces specifically what game this is being applied to, I'm getting it.
Explaining something that you're so passionate about dumps a huge amount of adrenaline into your system, especialy with this audiance.
If anyone wondering where is he now he has a youtube channel and a science blog where he shares lots of stuff :)
I've been watching TED talks for years, how did I never see this one?
This is what science should be doing. Making things more accessible to more people instead of corporations making things as expensive as profitably possible.
Absolutely genius work, and thanks for making a huge contribution to everyone!
i wanna hug this guy he is amazing and so bloody unasuming
I agree. That is an amazing tool Johnny Lee created!
I don't know who uploads these videos @ TED but please stop cutting them! If there are Q&A sessions after the lectures & whatever other interesting things go on there...WE WANT TO WATCH IT ALL! You're the #1 all-time subscribed non-profit on RUclips because there are so many of us that love this stuff so don't hold out on us! :) Thanks :)
@RobotronicRob the 3DS uses an entirely different technology, and is more closely related to those 3D holograms from Visionaries action figures than wiimote headtracking.
We need more people like this guy.
I love stuff like this. Such a buzz from little break throughs in hardware and different thinking.
I would love to use the second technique with a projector and use it as a set for filming. A bit like what they have done with the Mandalorian! Unfortunately I don't have the know how, and don't really know how to learn.
that's sick. it's nice to see this guy doing it for free too. he's about the advancement of us TOGETHER not just himself.
A teacher at my college class gave this to the entire class... You rock!!!
This dude is set to be some kind of tech legend.
That camera guy was really into that 3-D room. He wouldn't step away from it!!
This was so cool! He is awesome for this! That is the way to do it help out millions of people with simple technology! Great video!
I swear to God if anyone steals his genius ideas and make a load of money i'm gonna cry. He's amazing!
okay retaining more to the video now... the head gear looks sweet if you were doing a shooting game like the ones in the arcade that allow you to move your body inorder to dodge bullets. that is just awesome to think about. bringing the arcade experience home.
this guy is great! we need many many more like him
what a genius. Thats a great achievement. Somebody should of gave him an award or trophy
nice work.... and great to see he gave it to everyone for free,
joelito: With my BlueSoleil Dongle Wiimotes are discovered as Joysticks. The stack as in communication should be the same, decoding the bytestream is a bit more tricky though. There are some opensource projects which already implemented it, I took codesnippets from them to write my own little software using the wiimote
Someone should hire this guy and pay him billions. He deserves every dollar.
It’s 2020 and I really want to know what happened to this man and his ideas where is he now ? Does anybody know?
For me, the best tedx ever!
The cameraman was having fun! xD
WOW! your smart! what is your application for the second demo and how do you make a enfered dot on the glasses please i really would want to know and great video.
That's awesome. I can dab some IR ink around my eyes, set up a PC with my old WiiMote that's been sitting on the shelf, and have a makeshift 3D display. Amazing.
Nice work Johnny Lee! Brilliant work!
the intro lol awesome t-bag at 0:04
3 cheers and a standing ovation in a 5 minute presentation
I second your appreciation. I too, do not have stereoscopic vision, and was equally amazed at that 3D effect.
151 thumb downs were clearly from Nintendo, who did not make millions from his genius!
Wow, this is amazing, I'd love to look at the rest of this channel
Damn, some people come up with the coolest stuff from things we all already have. Great job!
that end song had some good bass!
And it works like a charm in my classroom! Money saved and knowledge gained.
the camera guy was having fun with that demo
Hell! indeed lol
I had seen the head tracking thing, but the "multi-touch interactive whiteboard" is just amazing...!! This guy is a genious! And you gotta give credit to Nintendo for making that kind of hardware available to anyone.
I knew the second I saw his first video 5 months ago that this would be the basis for all future gaming systems. I didn't realize it would be only 5 months until they would actually implement it in a game though! Amazing.
Hi! I am using this in my classroom and it works quite well, but it is fairly annoying the need of calibrating every single time I turn on the PC, even after shutting and openning up (I have a laptop in my classroom). Anyone knows if there is any way for saving the calibration so I don't have to set it again and again? Thanks in advance. Cheers!
I love these hacks it's very useful and he tries to make it accessible to everyone.
COOL! One question:Whats a "Radio Shack"?
shop used to buy electronics like radios etc
ARE THE WE REMOTES STILL MADE LIKE THIS WHERE WE CAN TURN IT INTO A PROJECTOR/DIGITAL WHITE BOARD VIA ITS HIGH PERFORMING CAMERA LENS ON THE TIP OF THE WII REMOTE?..
OR DID THEY FIND OUT ABOUT THIS &
HATE ON US &
DESIGN IT DIFFERENTLY SO THAT WE CANT DO THIS ANYMORE?
ANYBODY KNOWLEDGABLE PLEASE REPLY SOON.
What
so much brilliance and tech in... 240p...
Thumbs up to Johnny Lee, in a materialistic world he decided to distribute his technology for free. The world needs more people like him to establish equality in economics and everything else.
Hands' clapping from me too, very impressive.....from Thailand...so I can tutory or teach basic Science to kids, thank you so much John you are a super genious .
That's absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing!
