At the time of this talk, she had a golf ball sized brain tumor, and just about three weeks after this she had brain surgery to remove it. And she still delivered this inspiring talk about shity robots. She is incredible!
I admire her because she actually wants to use her brain to do things that are constructive and learn about things. It seems so many today are content to let everyone else do their thinking for them.
Man, this viewpoint is really something. I'm not an engineer, but I am studying science, and I'm also an artist. The notion of this fearless creativity, a way to defeat performance anxiety and the need to succeed at everything which a lot of us (myself included) deal with, is really powerful I think.
If your goal is failing and: You succeed at failing, then you have succeeded If you fail at failing, that means you have also succeded technically It's a win win!
Simone is incredible because she has rediscovered the artistic/creative side of engineering that is lost on so many. I love what your doing for Engineering Simone and I really hope you have a good recovery from your upcoming surgery that you talked about in your last video :)
I almost cried when she said that it's a lesson in humility that gets lost while inventing. That is true and right from the heart. Thanks Simone. You're always Awesome! God Bless you.
I’ve been watching TEDx talks for years trying to get inspiration about where to go in my life. How ironic is it that this useless talk probably has had the most substantial difference on me? 🤔☺️
At first I wasn’t sure why I loved this so much but i figured it out. I loved this so much because she is so full of personality and humility, and has come to this beautiful place of just doing and being and creating without trying to fit a mold or criticizing herself. Beautiful 💕
@@Gerno_ but to be constructed, criticism has to be directed at the things you do and how you do them, not who you are. We often redirect our criticism to ourselves as if our performance reflects who we are and our worth as humans. It doesn't.
Thank you Simone. I'm a baby boomer and an engineer. You have shown me the enthusiasm that was missing in my life. I realized I lived my life as a robot instead of designing and building a robot. You inspired me to built useless things.
ZuhaibMD I studied electrical engineering and got into robots via the IEEE robotics team at my university. But mechanical engineering also lends itself to robotics.
Or - like Simone - you just do it. There is so much literature, discussion groups, open maker labs, ... as well as parts, cheap mini computers, ... etc. available today - an Arduino Board and a few servo motors will only set you back a few bucks, so even if you screw up in your first tries, it's not big deal (and you'll definitely learn a lot in the process).
I'm tearing up. That was me. Her past self was just like I was, and to be honest I still am. Performance anxiety is one of the worst feelings, because it holds you back from doing these incredible things you know you will enjoy. I still struggle with it every day, being a student and all, but I'm going to take Simone's words to heart because this is incredible. I might not be able to make useless robots (yet), but perhaps I can start at my struggle with making art and perhaps make a useless drawing OF a robot. Just because it's fun.
Hey there, I can relate. I also have bad performance anxiety. I loved making art, all throughout my life. Eventually, I went to college for art. By the time I came out of it, school had given me performance anxiety about art, as well. I stopped drawing, for years. I didn’t know how to make art for the joy of it anymore. Recently, I started acrylic pour painting. The nice thing about it is that you end up with a finished piece of art, one way or another. Start to finish, you can be done in half an hour. Do this enough, and you start to think of yourself as an artist who finishes art. Once you move past that performance anxiety, it may become easier to move that confidence to other kinds of art. I recommend it. It’s kind of like Simone was saying about approaching it differently, playfully. Find something playful, and you’ll find your way into art.
I'm too old to marry you, but can my wife and I adopt you?? Thanks for creating one of the few Ted talks that I didn't think was elitist pablum. As a computer programmer with over 40 years experience, I have seen over and over again that we learn more from our failures than our successes. Giving someone the opportunity to fail as they learn is the best way to mentor anyone. Reading books on how successful people did it is a waste of time, reading books on how people failed is far more useful. I don't want to know the 10 things Elon Musk did to become rich, I want to read about the 10 things Johnny Depp did to become poor so I don't do them. Your machines are not useless, they help bring joy to many people. Thank you Simone. Hoping for the best for you.
This comment is interesting because its really kinda harmless on the surface but it makes me think about something. It reminds me that if Simone were a man, you wouldn't say you wanted to adopt him. In fact, it would be kinda weird. That would be infantilizing him, and you wouldn't do that to a man because it would be disrespectful and "emasculating". But Simone is a woman, and saying this is supposed to be cute and endearing or something. But why? Shes an adult, a grown woman and more than capable of taking care of herself. At the very least, she is over 18 years old. She doesn't need new parents. Its like that character trope of ultrapowerful women in cartoons who are gimped with child-like intellect and maturity. Why do this?
Simone is awesome! She's such a strong, , fun, intelligent, and independent person, who I know will overcome her latest health issue. NOTHING can stop her! x Loved this talk :-)

This talk by Simone was both humorous and insightful. She explored how her journey of building “useless” machines helped her overcome performance anxiety and embrace creativity. Simone highlighted the importance of learning through failure, showing that the process of invention can lead to unexpected personal growth and opportunities. Simone’s idea of creating machines that are designed to fail was a clever way to remove pressure and focus on the joy of creating. The realization that enthusiasm can replace anxiety was a powerful takeaway, demonstrating how passion can lead to unexpected successes.
I don't know what it is about you l, but you are such a joy to watch. Your enthusiasm and humility are both mesmerizing and intoxicating. It's so refreshing to see someone express herself and open up in a way that is so honest, it's akin to the innocence of child-like wonder. Ultimately, it's (IMHO) you being you in the most genuine sense possible which is intensely captivating, not because of the beauty you possess on the "outside", rather a reflection of the beauty you possess within. You are truly a treasure. Thank you for sharing that beauty with us, the viewers. I smile and laugh (along with you) every time you put an invention to the test. Useless things that entertain people is not new. It's called art. Simone Giertz may not know but she's an amazing artist / performer.
They are useless in that they don't provide anything except entertainment, which is subjective as literally anything can be entertainment. A Starburst wrapper can be more entertaining than a roller coaster or a video game to some. It took you more words to describe why they're not useless, than to just say they were useless. Such is postmodernism.
Lake Michigan, you have obviously never suffered from ADHD... with ADHD, EVERYTHING is more entertaining than EVERYTHING else. It's also one of the things that gives those of us with ADHD our signature innovative personalities! :D

Simone is one of the world's treasures. Been a fan for awhile, and I can't say enough nice things. I could be having the absolute worst day, and one video from Simone helps bring me to a place of joy... if only for ten minutes. But usually longer. There's just something about her. Anyways... great talk. Thanks for being you, Simone.
I'm an actress with performance anxiety (yes, I know, I realize the irony in that) and I choked up so many times watching this, I'm so proud of Simone. I feel like I know how she feels
This woman is absolutely amazing! I love her attitude toward life - she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had it removed and her attitude and sense of humour was always upbeat...or at least that's what she portrayed! Well done Simone
Great job Simone! You make a good point, as an engineer, I’m more likely not to start a project if I don’t think I can make it work from the beginning, and I think there’s a large portion of our imagination that we lose as we grow up, and those who don’t lose it end up inventing great things because they can’t be talked out of their idea, especially by themselves.
Wish she taught classes . I could use help overcoming my intimidation of technology . I always try to watch all the TED talks to broaden my perspective but this was like a breath of fresh air . Very entertaining !
you can see simone is very serious and looking for people's focus when she's talking about the switch from anxiety to enthusiasm, she does really care about it.
All hail our queen! She really inspire me to create without fear of what could go wrong, and learn in the proces of making even if the resulting thing I made is not that useful/practical/beautiful, the experience itself its still valuable.
The positive energy in this talk can cure anyone from depression, or just about anything that makes them feel like a potato. I see why so many guys wanted her instantaneously.
There is so much more going on here than many may think. She is showing true humbleness and how to not let anything stop you from being creative..who knows, by taking a page from her book you could be the inventor of something that will change the world. Really great to see someone like her remind us to be free like kids are before we ruin them lol
That was one of THE best TEDTalks I've ever seen -- I love the way you just opened up and let the audience into your world! Your personality really pulled the audience in!!! You and Adam REALLY need to develop a show for TV and maybe for tour, together...
It is indeed a beautiful time to be alive. Enthusiasm and joy is often squashed by nervousness and performance anxiety - Simone has shown what great things these two emotions are. And she's a better engineer than I am!
Did you know this lady just recently found out she had a brain tumor? She’s amazing. I messaged her on Facebook when I first saw her videos and she replied. We talked for like 10 minutes but it was enough. I literally only watched this video because of her. I don’t care for ted talks, but she gave me 10 minutes, so I’m goin to remember that forever
Really enjoyed it. Definitely my type of humor: The brave popcorns that we’re sacrificed for science. Some clever puns with dry humor. Sprinkled in with well intended advice. Just sweet content.
Brielle Everson Wow this is the first time I’ve ever seen a fellow Brielle in a comments section. We’re gonna have to fight to see who the alpha is though (it’s me), so expect an email
Simone, if you wear that vest on a date you can never say "Hey! My eyes are up here!"Keep up the good work making useless things, and keep on having fun, too! ((HUGS))
Thank you, for being you. Your beautiful, clumsy, stress filled self. There is beauty is this , there is strength in this. We are so wonderful in our flaws, and mistakes. For it is in this that we learn who we truly are.
Really good talk! As a self taught developer, I spent a lot of time making useless things so that I could learn and out of that created some cool stuff. If it wasn't for some of those projects I may never found a decent job.
I took "multi media" in 2002. It was so early in the web that Divs and CSS was considered modern. Learning Flash and Director. I wanted to learn more server-side languages and at the time probably could have taken computer science and in the long run may have been better. But I wasn't interested in learning those languages at the time. I also really enjoyed design, video, and 3d.
I often find that I'll spend hours constructing a complex solution to a problem, only to find out near the end that there's a simple prepackaged solution to accomplish the same thing. I don't let it get me down though, because I always end up learning a LOT along the way and come out a better person in the end :)
There is a lot of value in getting a degree in Software Engineering. Just graduated with mine. While self-taught is a good way to start, there are some things that you have to experience to learn. Like, my college has a bunch of classes that mock an Agile development process, and we even have a class dedicated to learning how to work within a team, our SWE department head is honestly, the best in my opinion (obviously, I'm a bit biased). I think without that kind of knowledge, starting a job in the SWE world is fairly difficult. The degree also helps you to demand a MUCH higher salary(currently have a starting salary of 71k, and I'm so ecstatic about it! :D) Shoutout to Shippensburg University CS&E department!
Having fun with whatever you're making is useful. In such a materialistic society, it can be hard to understand that. But it's true. Keep on having fun Simone! Thanks for sharing the fun with us. We could all use it, so keep it up.
What a truly creative person, inspiring talk, makes me want to just have fun with what I make instead of putting so much pressure on myself for it to mean something
Poor old Simone is about to go for major surgery for a brain tumour. She is a beautiful funny person. Please check out her RUclips page and send her loads of best wishes and love :D
I am really impressed by her attitude and enthusiasm . I think if I look at all my simple attempts with joyness and Much more enthusiasm , it will make my day and life complete one .
She is one of those rare people with such an attractive set of personality quirks, that she could basically do anything that gets her talking on camera and she creates a minimum fanbase that is larger than some cable tv channels. It is NOT like she tries to engineer fixes for problems that are outside the box, and with sheer statistics on her side makes something useful once every blue moon. NO! Her whole schtick is to make absolutely ridiculous inventions with her first rule is that it will be completely useless!?!?!? LoL, and I love watching! It is crazy!
This inspired me. It gets hard to fight that voice in your head. It gets to a point where I can't move even if the answer is right in front of me. Fear of failure takes over and the thought of starting turns into 2 months' worth of daydreaming until the drive just fades away. This video made a great impact and possibly changed my life (work(job) and play). This is possibly all of those "just friggin' do it" articles summarized into 12 minutes in video form. Thanks, Simone.
OMG I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!!! She tried so hard to make them laugh and have fun with her yet no one did!! I laughed basically the whole time while watching this but they all seemed so unimpressed by her!!

Setu Choudhary, dude, I'm fine. Go wish Simone instead.
Simon
😂😂
Best comeback ever😂
"I'm not an engineer"
Oh I'm afraid you are indeed. You may just not have an engineering degree.
!
Up you go
"I'm not a doctor"
Oh I'm afraid you are indeed. You may just not have a doctorate in medicine.
@@MP-ut6eb Yes, I am. Question is... Do I have an engineering degree? We'll never know.
@@MP-ut6eb I am. And trust me, theres nothing worse than boring, uncreative engineer...
This is why I’m taking maths and physics for engineering next year, I’m scared of being the only girl, but I love making things and want to make school fun
Only girl? How small are your classes then
Believe in yourself Emma!
@@Her01panda Nah I tried to join the robotics club at my school, ended up quitting because I felt really lonely and intimidated. It's ok though because I'm starting my own club lol
I believe in you!!!
Me too! all the best!
So proud!! Hoping for a quick and easy recovery 💛
The world needs more people like Simone. She is genuinely curious, intelligent and seems to see the good in everything.
WONDERFUL! We love Simone! All the best in your upcoming surgery! Thoughts and Prayers and robots!
We really need to just loosen up and stop taking ourselves so seriously. Thank you so much for setting such a positive example! Get well soon!
Simone: We should make useless things.
My Parents: *create me*
At least they had fun in the process ;)
oh no

You are underrated
I'm an actress with performance anxiety (yes, I know, I realize the irony in that) and I choked up so many times watching this, I'm so proud of Simone. I feel like I know how she feels
This woman is absolutely amazing! I love her attitude toward life - she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had it removed and her attitude and sense of humour was always upbeat...or at least that's what she portrayed! Well done Simone
The design is very human.
What a time to be alive!!!
Congratulations, Simone! That was a wonderful talk! Thank you for being such an inspiration.
Love her - love her - love her....thank god that she is still with us!
THE QUEEN IS TRENDING
Wish she taught classes . I could use help overcoming my intimidation of technology . I always try to watch all the TED talks to broaden my perspective but this was like a breath of fresh air . Very entertaining !
you can see simone is very serious and looking for people's focus when she's talking about the switch from anxiety to enthusiasm, she does really care about it.
Am so happy for you. Hope to have you on my tv show one day.And we still praying for your health to get much better.. Amazing lady
Chainmail GOOGLY EYE SHIRT! Great talk Simone. Best of luck at the end of the month. We are all rooting for you!
I’m writing a volume of useless books that will never be published. Seriously,
I love this TED Talk... uselessness is actually a useful tool.
Simone is the best! Hope you get better soon!
Wish for her good health. Cuz this person is amazing.
Love you simone... GWS
This is by far the most exciting and inspiring ted talk I've seen. I love you Simon. You're a diamond.
I’m writing a volume of useless books that will never be published. Seriously,
I love this TED Talk... uselessness is actually a useful tool. 😘😘😘😘😘
Sending love your way Simone, you have got this!
My parents made a useless thing that typed this comment and it didn't do much for them, so I don't know.
Copper Creek Cuts same here
Copper Creek Cuts heheheheee
But they had fun making it and isn't that what counts?
Autsj
Just like the "useless machines", you don't know what you someday could be usefull for or inspire :)
There is so much more going on here than many may think. She is showing true humbleness and how to not let anything stop you from being creative..who knows, by taking a page from her book you could be the inventor of something that will change the world. Really great to see someone like her remind us to be free like kids are before we ruin them lol
Get well soon, Simone🌷
The title should be - "Why you should do what you love"
That was one of THE best TEDTalks I've ever seen -- I love the way you just opened up and let the audience into your world! Your personality really pulled the audience in!!! You and Adam REALLY need to develop a show for TV and maybe for tour, together...
Aw i love this ted talk. Not only was i genuinely inspired by the message but i adore the humorous and geeky charm about her.
I've never related to anything more than this is in my life! I'm such a fan of Simone! Loved the talk girl!
It is indeed a beautiful time to be alive. Enthusiasm and joy is often squashed by nervousness and performance anxiety - Simone has shown what great things these two emotions are. And she's a better engineer than I am!
She's sooooo adorable! I wanna be her friend!💕
Definitely my type of humor:
The brave popcorns that we’re sacrificed for science.
Some clever puns with dry humor.
Sprinkled in with well intended advice.
Just sweet content.
I kinda want that shirt!!!!
Brielle Everson I NEED that shirt, and I had absolutely no idea I did until this video.
Il Al like someone call vogue she needs a photo shoot
You should both go make one yourself! It looks like a fairly straight forward and easy project to start with, just lots of tedious work, obviously.
Brielle Everson Wow this is the first time I’ve ever seen a fellow Brielle in a comments section. We’re gonna have to fight to see who the alpha is though (it’s me), so expect an email
I would wear it
Simone, if you wear that vest on a date you can never say "Hey!
Never clicked on a video so fast. Hopefully your surgery will go well.
xWood4000 I really hope she'd get out of it without a single damage
When would be her surgery?
Pickolas Cage May 30th, she said it in her behind the scenes TED video on her channel.
Charbel Alam I hope so too.
30/5, she said it in the end of her latest video
Really good talk! As a self taught developer, I spent a lot of time making useless things so that I could learn and out of that created some cool stuff. If it wasn't for some of those projects I may never found a decent job.
Hey I'm a Maker
you did not go to college or other school?
Exactly, its not really about the end result, its about the thought and process.
Shoutout to Shippensburg University CS&E department!
Having fun with whatever you're making is useful. In such a materialistic society, it can be hard to understand that. But it's true. Keep on having fun Simone! Thanks for sharing the fun with us. We could all use it, so keep it up.
Failure is awesome! That's liberates people to try really hard things or really silly stupid things.
I hope you get well soon, we need more humans like you.
What a truly creative person, inspiring talk, makes me want to just have fun with what I make instead of putting so much pressure on myself for it to mean something
This was according to me one of the best TED talks i have ever seen and a just couldn't stop laughing!
yeah it was very engaging
Poor old Simone is about to go for major surgery for a brain tumour. She is a beautiful funny person. Please check out her RUclips page and send her loads of best wishes and love :D
I am really impressed by her attitude and enthusiasm . I think if I look at all my simple attempts with joyness and Much more enthusiasm , it will make my day and life complete one .
This is awesome, Simone. You have an amazing channel, been watching your robots for a long time. :) Congrats on the TED Talk!
NLFilmandPhoto drdr dr
I wish the audience would have laughed more. They were really dry 🙂
Cristal Lugo they were too engrossed in her beauty
As far as TED audiences go, I thought they were pretty good. They're often a much tougher crowd than this =p
I couldn't believe they didn't laugh about the open fly joke, that was hilarious
OMG I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!!! She tried so hard to make them laugh and have fun with her yet no one did!! I laughed basically the whole time while watching this but they all seemed so unimpressed by her!!
Really? I thought they loved her. They laughed a ton at her machines and cheered for a long time at the end!
