@@InvisibleYetVisible Good is subjective. This song isn't as good as Alt-J's other songs, but it's still a banger. But what I said is that IS in the OST for that show. It's the theme song!
It's so clever and it's actually a metaphor for the singer's homosexuality. He's in the middle of a triple cock meat sandwich but in the end, he only gets a gob full of one as one of the others gets stage fright and the other has already unloaded onto his face. These are genius lyrics. Forget Dylan, Hendrix etc. Alt J are truly the greatest poets of all time... Their fanbase made up predominantly of hippy Arts students definitely agree.

Tesselation is the phenomenon of a geometric shape being able to form a repeating pattern over a surface. In my interpretation, this song first uses the idea of a love triangle as a source of strife, then as a means of traversing the complex space of relationships we all have with eachother.

Does anyone else listen to Alt-J when they're really high? Me and my friends discovered Alt-J by accident when we were high. Hunger of the Pine was the song we found. All of us sat in silence, just listening and when the song ended, we felt like we'd all gone to another world then came back. Funny because once we went to Amsterdam, sat in a coffee shop, high af and my friend said "imagine if hunger of the pine came on now" ... 2 or 3 songs later it did! The whole coffee shop went silent and embraced the amazing music. Thumbs up if you get high to Alt-J! 👍
@ash_tray Yes! Eyes closed or in the dark, listening to ALT-J hits different! If you still smoke, try doing it listening to one of their newer songs called "Chicago".
This is such an insightful video! For those of you that don't understand what tessellation is, it is filling a plain with objects (or tiles) that fit perfectly into one another (similar to what you see in a mosaic). So all the talk about triangles is particularly appropriate, although in this video I think it is pretty clear tessellate is being used to describe sex (ie a penis fitting perfectly into a vagina). But what is really great about the music video is that it is a recreation of the "the school of Athens" by Raphael. The original mural had some of the greatest mathematical minds in history, notably Pythagoras and Euclid.
The song (in my opinion) isn't about sex itself, although that is riddled into the first bars of the song. I think its about relationships between people. He starts off with how much he loves this person and how the sharks (other people) come in to steal the bait. But then the gun goes off and she leaves him. Triangles ARE'NT his favorite shape because there is a third person in-between every relationship according to him, thus referring to the tessellation of every triangle, every "relationship".

The part about the three guns and the search for the grave while the camera spins is a reference to the famous italo western "The good, the bad and the ugly" from 1966 by Sergeo Leone. The three protagonist share indeed a very interesting relationship that keeps seemingly changing throughout the entire movie.

May I thank Sons of Anarchy for introducing this amazing song. Though there might be a deeper meaning to what I'm seeing in the video, it's not quite what I was expecting when I heard it. I love this song.

I can’t believe the low. number of likes for this amazing song. I remember when this first came out. I listened to it over and over. Hopefully it reaches more people.
For those who didn't get the point of the video. This makes a reference to the famous Rafaello Sanzio painting, School of Athens, and shows modern society state of decay, by showing drugs, prostitution and swag culture. A brilliant comparison is the high af Platon, triping in his "world of forms".
Listening to this song and checking out the lyrics, I see the song as a PoV from three people in a love triangle, where two people love one person. One of them is deeply in love with the protagonist but is misunderstood and mistreated, the other one is more confident and possessive, and the third is the main protagonist who enjoys the attention she is getting.. This is how I see it. So the first verse is the PoV from our first character, Mr. Misunderstood, he feels helpless and torn down by the girl he loves, her friends too mistreat him and although he only wants to love her, she does nothing but hurt him, and he has accepted this with lyrics like "Bite chunks out of me, You're a shark and I'm swimming, My heart still thumps as I bleed" Even here, you can see he loves her and keeps doing so through the pain. The next set is the Chorus, this is the PoV of our protagonist, who says that "Triangles are my favorite shape" because she enjoys the attention from two guys that she gets, "Toe to Toe, Back to Back let's go." Is what I see, an allegory for a western standoff, where the two guys are fighting it out for the love of the girl. The third set, the Verse now is Mr Possessive, with lyrics like "Go alone my flower" and "And keep us on my heart" it makes the point that he likes her to only think about him, and he is aware this other guy is infatuated with her, this is him telling her to not go down that path, and to keep her mind on Mr Possessive, not Mr Misunderstood. The next Verse is about three guns, each gun being a different person, "Three guns and one goes off, One's empty, one's not quick enough" Now at first we don't know who it is who shot the gun, Ie.. Took one other person's life, but we know that it is Mr Misunderstood's turn in his verse, and this means it could be him who shot? Who killed Mr Possessive? No.. "One burn, one red, one grin" The "One Burn" is the death of our Mr Misunderstood, we know this because of "One Grin" which would come from Mr Possessive, who doesn't like Mr Misunderstood because of the last verse, the "One Red" is the emotions of the Protagonist, who in my eyes is angry at how the triangle is broken.. Then the next verse comes from the girl's perspective, and she is mourning the death of the guy she lost, maybe the decision of having a love triangle like this is haunting her? Or maybe the lingering feeling that his death is her fault. "You will still haunt me " The final chorus is Mr Possessive, Triangles are his favorite shape, the love triangle he enjoyed because in the end he came out as the winner in this mess, in his eyes, everything went well. This is how I see the song, it's probably not what Alt-J were thinking when it was written and sung, but I like to over-analyse and enjoy the storytelling that my imagination can conjure!
As a curator of fine art, there is so much to change in the imagery of this official video. A final product delivering true tesselations in rhythm of an underlying romance is well worth the challenge.

Its a metaphor on the famous Fresco painting by Raphael/"School of Athens". It was a meeting of renaissance minds. Tesselate is a v. "to patch a quilt", perhaps these are our generations movers & shakers? Got it? Good shit!!!

Unfortunately, music like this breeds pseudo intellectuals like yourself and all the people who have replied to your fuckwit of a comment. Do you really think this music is clever? Do you feel more intelligent listening to it? Do you go round with a smug sense of self-importance listening to this tripe, looking down on the minnows as they listen to their inferior simpletons music? "Oh dear me Gilbert, I saw that boy from that dirty estate again the other day, he was wearing a Van Halen shirt, plaahhh, what a pleb'. This? This pretentious shit, is some of the most boring, ordinary music you can listen to. There's nothing clever about this pal, musically or lyrically. This smug style of 'hipster' trash has all been done before and better. Musically, this is about as pathetic as it gets. I think the best way of referring to it is 'stealing a living'. The lyrics sound like they're an after thought, written on a piece of paper after the music was completed, probably the day before they were due in recording. "Go alone my flower, And keep my whole lovely you" - You actually think that's clever? They're some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard. No wonder this junk is enjoyed by students, I'm guessing it makes them feel clever in between their sociology classes. Fucking triangles, shove them up your arse.
InvisibleYetVisible And why are YOU listening to this "tripe," this "hipster trash" & checkin' out the brothas in the video all the while railing against it and the ppl who like it? Are you off of your medication again? (and about shoving things up somebody's ass, 'scuse me, "arse"....well, never mind...)

i feel like there's lots of references to art in alt-j videos, is that deliberate or? like this is the school of athens painting by raphael, and in the first frame of the breezeblocks video is a reference to ophelia, and the hunger of the pine seems to be a nod to st sebastian. either that or i'm reading WAY too much into this lmao
it seems like there is some reference to the triangle also, he mentions it in the lyrics and everyone has the delta tattoo, the mathematical symbol for change. in the school of athens painting one of the main characters shown is Pythagoras who contributed his famous theorem on them as well.

One of them is deeply in love with the protagonist but is misunderstood and mistreated, the other one is more confident and possessive, and the third is the main protagonist who enjoys the attention she is getting..
"You will still haunt me
"
The final chorus is Mr Possessive, Triangles are his favorite shape, the love triangle he enjoyed because in the end he came out as the winner in this mess, in his eyes, everything went well.
This is how I see the song, it's probably not what Alt-J were thinking when it was written and sung, but I like to over-analyse and enjoy the storytelling that my imagination can conjure!

This song is definitely top tier, so unique and will always be one of my favorites!
It took me 9 years to actually look up the word tessellate. This song is god tier.
THIS IS PURE ART.
Yeah...
I am proof that allowing your song to be used for the intro of a show still gets you new fans, even in 2021 with all the different ways to promote music.
which show?
The Day of the Jackal 🔥🔥🔥
One of the best video ever made, used it on my presentation about the influence of Greece on Ocidental Lifestlyle. The concept of the delta, de painting by Rafael Sanzio, it's all just perfect and way more justified than any other music video so far.
Can you speak more about this? Interesting stufff. Was trying to look up more on the Delta concept, and the painting itself but couldn't find much.
mysteriousstrangr313 www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread904591/pg1 that page has interesting stuff about it, and the concepts are based in real facts from the greek culture. enjoy
I love that I can't use words to describe what it is that makes alt-J so captivating... its ∆✨🌀🎱
I honestly only come back here after so many years listening to this song, to hear the beginning. The first 15 seconds is soooo great!!!!!!!!!
I am a mom of two teen daughters and every time I need to find my groove back, I visit alt-j. My 16 year old is now a fan of older alt j stuff and it officially elevated my status as a cool mom :)
Its a metaphor on the famous Fresco painting by Raphael/"School of Athens". It was a meeting of renaissance minds. Tesselate is a v. "to patch a quilt", perhaps these are our generations movers & shakers? Got it? Good shit!!!
Mind Blown ! greetings from Trinidad and Tobago
I listened to Ellie Goulding's cover first and was like wow this amazing! So I decided to check out the original and omg! Even better!
In love with the voice of this guy. I really DO dig this group! 😍
"Triangles are my favourite shape", Illuminate confirmed
It's their symbol
+Emmi Heart their symbol is the delta sign but yeah
+Trixi trxi Why people always looking for illuminati things in everything? God look for good things to do...
Stephany Kaelin Peña Méndez
Like commenting on other comments that I don't like?
+Trixi trxi Exactly, like saying to others dont look illuminati in music :D
"Day of the Jackal" brought me here! This song is brilliant.
These guys are unreal... all there songs are deep!
I’d barely even heard of these guys until today and I cannot believe I hadn’t??? They’re so good.
Yes indeed you can hear their music for the first time or since 5 years, it will always be the same
PHENOMENAL SOUND! This really makes me feel awesome!
I’m in this video. I wish I could prove otherwise but came back after years. I don’t sing but I blow the smoke out in the white T. Good blokes the band.
Ich werde nie vergessen wie ich diesen Song damals zum ersten mal gehört habe 😍
This boys are so talent! Must see more! This is Handmade Music!
Found this hidden Gem in the 1st episode of “The day of the Jackal” 🔥
This guy's vocals 1:40-1:52. So much feeling
The day of the Jackal brought me here
Same 😂😂😂
Damn Same 😂😂
I never get ad's on this video. Thank you Alt J
Ingress's opening.I like this song.
What a coincidence to come back to this song/video exactly 10 years after it uploaded.
I'm now convinced that alt-J wrote this song specifically for Day of the Jackal. ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥🤜🤛
Read it was written 12 years ago.
@tweedy54 that's the point
this video looks like a huge painting of this century...
The good the bad and the ugly reference gets me every time
Listen to this many times ... I'm not religious - but this is pure evil and honey to my ears at the same time - sound creates light - or black sun echo watch out a specially youth
Triangles are my favorite shape. Three points where two lines meet.
+John Feltham hahaha
+John Feltham I'm sure even women love triangles, don't they ?
no doubt
+John Feltham im confused ∆ thats not how a triangle works...? ∆ IM CONFUSED
I must have been drunk I don't remember commenting that and I don't find this funny. Haha. Wow.
this song is freakin awesome
i like the rhythm it is calming
DOTJ is chock-full of amazing music.
This song's a masterpiece!!
Been looking for this song for an hour 😰🔥🔥
To anyone who doesn't know the meaning of tessellate (like the actual word) it means to decorate with mosaic, most commonly colored glass.
That doesn't mean that's what the song is about. In interviews I've heard Joe say he wrote the song about making love. Most of their meanings are around an abstract topic
When two shapes tessellate it means they slot perfectly together. It's just innuendo.
Richard Bowman Someone told me I should check out Tessellate by Alt-J. Am I not allowed? Is there a rule against it?
The day of the jackal 🔥🔥🎥🍿
10 anos desse lançamento já e até hoje toca. Perfeita demais ♡
I CAN'T GET OVER THIS SONG
I feel like this song is very underrated and underappreciated masterpiece. It should have billions of views not just millions 😯🫣❤️
I am 26 years old, at a phase of gaining a higher sense of self awareness. Trying to accept my toxic behaviours, and stepping out of my comfort/known zone to tread the unknown. It gets hard from here.
This, is my comfort music in these times.
Love the Good,Bad, and the Ugly reference in this song ;)
Such an underrated song.
The day of the jackal ❤
Oh my goodness gracious me. That was outstanding!! The video was perfection!! There's some nice looking people in this world!! 👏🏼👏🏾👏🏿
Anyone from 2024 listening to this masterpiece?🔥

Two days ago popped up in my co workers spotify...I shazammed it and now her we r
It wasn't till years after I fell in love with this song that I found out it was about sex haha
Is it?😳
i think referring to sex with "let's tessellate" is genius, imma use it for sure
I think tesselate means to lay tiles in an intricate complicated pattern.
I think it’s about argument and confrontation.
@@rachelstephens3656 actually the drummer said: “Well, obviously, in maths tessellating is when things fit together and the song is basically about sex.” but I also like your interpretation :)
tes·sel·late
ˈtesəˌlāt/
verb: tessellate; 3rd person present.
decorate (a floor) with mosaics.
Mathematics
cover (a plane surface) by repeated use of a single shape, without gaps or overlapping.
Anyone in 2025 listening to this eargasm?
I don't know if it's on purpose, but at 2:37 the girl on the left glitches REALLY weirdly :/
+Antoni Kalkowski How did you notice that :'D
Its so freaky
It does that a few times in the video. Watch this video while tripping and it's an entirely different thing according to my friend.
lag xD
Wow very observant
I read this comment the exact moment it happened! Lol, it's probably the speed-up effect, I guess the white dude must've been taking one long-ass puff for them to speed it up like that.
Sons of Anarchy brought me here 4 years ago and I’m so glad
Miss sons
What episode? I mostly think of Ingress when hearing this song.

The day of the Jackal S1-Ep 1 introducing me to this masterpiece song.
I thought I was the only one shazaming it… this song is fire 🔥
I think everyone done it @MayaXimena123
so, I couldn't understand any of this, but when I could after all the intense panning I hear TRI ANGLES ARE MY FAVORITE SHAPE
Lol as soon as i scroll down to the comments and read this those lyrics play
@@kijetesantakaluSokete you should stay in school then and pay more attention in English class.
This is a very special song.
I just saw them perform this live at KEXP. I was skeptical at first, but very impressed with quality of their sound live.
i feel like there's lots of references to art in alt-j videos, is that deliberate or? like this is the school of athens painting by raphael, and in the first frame of the breezeblocks video is a reference to ophelia, and the hunger of the pine seems to be a nod to st sebastian. either that or i'm reading WAY too much into this lmao
The three guns line is a reference to The Good, the Bad and The Ugly
really? i had no idea, thanks!
alt-J is a very poetric band, the lyrics have in every line subtext. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if the same goes in some way for their videos.
it seems like there is some reference to the triangle also, he mentions it in the lyrics and everyone has the delta tattoo, the mathematical symbol for change. in the school of athens painting one of the main characters shown is Pythagoras who contributed his famous theorem on them as well.
The whole song's about a love triangle I think, haha. (But only because I read it on genius.com and it makes too much sense xD)
ALT J are masters of the fine art of song construction.......... ❤
