  • Layka, the U.S. military combat dog on the cover of National Geographic's June issue, parachuted with her handler recently to help her fellow combat dogs. While serving in Afghanistan, Layka was shot four times by the enemy. Despite the injuries, she attacked and subdued the shooter, saving her handler and other members of the team. In surgery to save her life, she lost a front leg, and her handler, Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, later adopted her. Here, with McDonald, Layka took part in testing a parachute harness that could make it easier and safer for dogs to help soldiers reach remote locations.

      +MrAmericasbadboy So you speak from a position of having had 120mph wind directly against your retina? I do, and the dog needs goggles. In a static jump, maybe not, but for a minute free-fall its a risk of damage to the retina.

    I agree that dogs are resilient and that many combat pups have repelled and even jumped from small heights with shoots, but guess what, a dogs hearing is up to x4 better than humans. This poor thing had no hearing protection and no goggles to protect its eyes. This is a bit inhumane for a dog. You could see how uncomfortable it was before jumping, and even during the jump. Congrates you did research that the dog would survive. Humans can be strangled until they pass out and survive, doesn't mean that it would be fun to put a video on youtube about it. At least make a freaking contraption that would protect the dog's ears and eyes.

      +Old glory Apparently you don't know how to read...this dog had NEVER jumped before. Teaching them as puppies is completely different. Showing compassion for someone/something that has no say in what they're about to do has nothing to do with being a "hippy"...

    • @Unmedicated_Moments
      @Unmedicated_Moments 8 лет назад

      +Justin H Hmm...well they probably at least went through training. You never know what this can do to a dog if you don't know if they can't take it. You are still a fucking hippy

      @justinh5609 8 лет назад +6

      Old glory
      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, little fellah, I'm no hippy...as for the dog, there's a reason they're started as puppies. I have no problem with it under those circumstances, but you don't put an already traumatized dog through something like this for a "test run".

    I have to agree that is simply messed up. It's fine if people want to do something that runs counter to our survival instinct and jump out of a plane. We understand what's going on. But that dog can be heard whining before the jump and is clearly freaked. On some level I think dogs understand that jumping from crazy heights is not something they want to do. Plus she's muzzled the whole time! Why on Earth put a pup through this kind of thing -- just so you can tell your friends you did it? If the answer is "a bonding experience," there are much cooler ways to do it that won't freak the f out of your best friend. Bad call in my opinion.

      The point is it takes shorter time to deploy a k9 squad if they parachute in with the squad itself, every dog goes through flight training, the only problem here is that they didn't supply the actual flight protection for said dog, but 99% of the time the dog is trained and protected.

    Nobody talks about army consider dogs like "disposable material", no budget to take them back home.
    Most dogs are abandoned at their own or executed with a headshot.
    That's why some trainers adopt them bringing them back using their own money. That's how the "army" pays back loyalty.

      +Ruy Daza Quiroga This has now changed. The passage of the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by both the House of Representatives and Senate, and its signature into law on 11/25/15 by the President mandates that military working dogs will be returned to U.S. soil upon retirement, and that their human handlers and their families - to whom these dogs mean more than anyone else -will be given first right of adoption.

    Need to build a harness inside a bag, with the bag the dog can push down with their feet and in turn gives them stability, they wont flail around trying to get their feet towards ground, like a cat would. Plus it keeps the piss off you when you have one that releases on exit.. (more do than not), The system needs a quick release system in place so when the contact the ground they can be released immediately and go to work... Could save both the handler, and the animals life... Oh and by the way, the dogs are just like humans, the either love it or hate it. The military will not accept a dog that fails in this area. They all in general don't worry about it as much as we do...The dogs that is...

      Its not about if the dog liked it or not, it was to test the dog harness for military use. That dog has already been in war and lost a leg, sky diving wasn't the scariest thing for it.

    These dogs are specially trained and conditioned for these kinds of exercises so they can be operationally proficient,so stop whining about the dog being scared,the dog probably loved it they're adrenaline junkies just like their handlers and teammates,lol.

      The guy said she got nervous. The dog isn't trained for skydives, and it has no idea what's going on. It was obviously scared.

      Specially trained?! You are ridiculous. Okay. Let's say you are spanked in the butt. Your butt turns red. Okay lets keep doing this for many years because I think you like it. Oh wait, I forgot, there is a tape over your mouth so you can't answer me to say whether you like it or not. This world, full of ignorant people... Imagine if someone forcefully specially trained you to walk over a minefield in a real world exercise, and you dont get to say no, you are just simply pushed across. How would you feel? Think about it.

      I also like it how hesitant your sentence seems when you used the two words "probably" and "loved it." Knocking on your skull....

      Mason So the first time it skydived, it was specially trained? Oh really? That makes no sense kid.

      Probably not jumping out of a plane specifically but I'm sure combat dogs would want to be with their handlers so they can protect their team from danger.

      Dogs are odd creatures, a friend of mine cannot get onto his motorcycle without the dog going nuts, it wants to ride with him, so he bought a sidecar for his bike, problem solved, hehe.

    The dog needs goggles and ear plugs. Free fall is really loud, must be much louder for a dog’s ear drums. I am a licensed skydiver and dog lover. I know.

      Its no more cruel then anything else they put those dogs through (they are trained to sniff out BOMBS), and definitely not crueler the nature itself. so, go cry me a river.

    Special forces now use that harness all the time now. They also designed eye goggles for the dog, and ear protection. No muzzle needed now. And they also designed a bullet and knife proof vest for the dogs. Military dogs are treated just like other soldiers. They have their commendations and rank. As well as buried with honors, in a special cemetery plot if they die. Same with police K-9 units.
