  • This is a comprehensive video lesson on how to quickly and effectively learn Led Zeppelin's FOOL IN THE RAIN drum groove as played by JOHN BONHAM from 1979's In Through The Out Door. We break it down to its components, and then build it back up!
And here is my drum cover: • FOOL IN THE RAIN * DRU...

I woke up today and watched the Fool in the Rain drum track and thought to myself... jeez, I'll never be able to play that. Then, I stumbled upon this video, and I was playing the main pattern tightly within 30 minutes. I can't thank you enough. You've made my weekend! You broke that pattern down beautifully. Great work.

This is great. I'm a beginner and just wanted to get this groove. I tried tabs and a couple of other videos and it simply wasn't "clicking" for me.
The way this is broken down just worked for me.
Starting with the One and Three beats helped me lock in the main rythym. From there it was easier to build up.
(Also, I learned that counting --- even in my head, -- with "one-trip-let" "two-trip-let" ... throws me off. But adopting "one-n-a" "two-n-a" works fine. (Hey, I said beginner!)
    Thanks for this lesson.

Terry you are an awesome teacher. Thanks for breaking this down. I've been playing triplets around one on the kick (actually starting before one). In addition, and a, on the 2. Its a workout for sure. I didn't catch the triplet on the HH. But it is so smooth and clean there must be something more going on, so I figured it had to be a combination of grace notes and a little more kick to create that, as you say; "Train a comin'" sound.

My favourite drummer is Ilan Rubin from Nine Inch Nails. He’s done a mini series with Reverb and does this song. He gets it wrong. But he’s such a good drummer there must be a reason. He’s won drum awards and this is simple for someone at his level. And JB is his favourite drummer. He also does The Crunge. This is correct. Brilliant tutorial. The open hat I learned it by locking it with the second kick. That made it easier. For me at least.
