This is the "Rappers Delight" equivalent for the birth of heavy guitar music. It may seem simplistic compared to those who followed, but that's what roots are: no roots. no branches. 1964!

I grew up with all the music from the British Invasion & The Mersybeat. The Kinks were huge & had a lot of hits. I especially love their music from the 60's & 70's. "All Day and All of the Night", "Set Me Free", "Tired of Waiting for You", "A Well Respected Man", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", "Sunny Afternoon", "Dead End Street", "Waterloo Sunset", "Autumn Almanac" & "Lola".

The fuzzed-out guitar (created by Dave Davies' slicing the cone in his amp with a razor blade) helped to launch heavy metal. For real. Ozzy Osbourne was absolutely blown away by this band, and I think this song in particular.

This birth of heavy metal in 1964 is due to Dave Davies (who played the guitar solo) slashed the cone in his amplifier with a razor to get that distorted guitar sound.

The Kinks were the first punk group. Nobody knew it then. Their simple intense riffs, their working class attitude. You get who they are with no apologies. They were doing the Ramones way before the Ramones. Which reminds me.... the Ramones? Have y'all done the Ramones? I say start with Sheena is a Punk Rocker.

IIRC Ray tells the story that he spotted a woman in the crowd at a gig - she was amazing, totally different. As soon as the concert was over he rushed out front of stage to find her, but she was gone. He never saw her again, but he couldn't stop thinking about her.. No matter what he did, for a long, long time he couldn't get her out of his head... She'd really got him.... :-)

The Kinks have over twenty albums worth of music to choose from and a wide variety of song styles. Mirror of Love features all kinds of horns. Muswell Hillbilly is pretty much American folk music. Personally I think I'm Not Like Everybody Else helped start early punk and if I remember right was the opening song for the series The Supranos. All kinds of great songs scattered through all the years. The Low Budget album in my opinion is one of the top ten albums all time. You can't go wrong with any song on that album. THe album was released mid to late seventies but many of the songs are relevant today.
A lot of bands have covered Kinks songs. A really good cover is First Aid Kit-Waterloo Sunset.

Anyway, "Waterloo Sunset" is a very British-sounding song by the Kinks, and I liked it for some reason. It's just one of a number of Kinks songs you may explore.

Ray and Dave Davies. The fabulous Kinks. Dave's guitar solo didn't come thru loud enough in this reaction. Check out the Kinks Paris 1965....."Long Tall Shorty". Love the Kinks. The Brits sure knew what to do with American blues and rhythm and blues. A shot in the arm for our own homegrown roots music in the mid 1960s. Ray and Dave Davies are the best. "Waterloo Sunset" is one of Dave Davies finest songs in a long list of original rockers by the Kinks.
