- Johnny Tillotson's artistic ability and energetic personality consistently delight audiences of all age groups.
He was born in Jacksonville, Florida but, at nine years old, he was given the responsibility to take care of his grandmother in Palatka, Florida, some 50 miles away. He traveled back to Jacksonville to be with his parents each summer. It was at this early age that he decided to be a singer and with the encouragement of his Mother and Grandmother, Johnny began to perform at local functions and on the radio. By the time he entered Palatka Sr. High School, he had quite a reputation as a talented singer throughout the state of Florida.
His first television appearance was as a guest on the "Toby Dowdy Show". Johnny's performance produced a steady stream of fan mail and resulted in a three year contract as a regular on the country-oriented show. When the "Toby Dowdy Show" went off the air, Johnny had the opportunity to do his own show. He successfully juggled his weekly TV show and his studies at the University of Florida until graduation.
It was during these years that Johnny began writing songs. In 1957, a local D.J. submitted a tape of Johnny's singing to the National Pet Milk Talent Contest. Johnny was chosen as one of the 6 national winners from this tape, which afforded him the opportunity to perform on WSM radio in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was to receive his biggest break. Miss Lee Rosenberg, a Nashville music publisher, was so impressed with Johnny, she took his tape to Archie Bleyer. Archie was the owner of Cadence Records and the force behind much of the success of The Everly Brothers, Andy Williams, 'the Chordettes' and many other artists.
While Johnny was finishing his studies at the University of Florida, (He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism and Communications in 1959), Archie recorded Johnny singing his own composition "Dreamy Eyes". This song went to the top of the charts in Florida and many other parts of the country, which proved to Archie that Johnny had what it took to sell records. He invited Johnny to move to New York City immediately upon graduating from college. This was the start of a string of chart records, "Poetry In Motion", "It Keeps Right On A Hurtin", "Without You", "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On" and many more. It was "It Keeps Right On A Hurtin", one of Johnny's own compositions, which brought Johnny his first Grammy nomination along with the distinction of becoming one of the first "cross-over" artists. This established Johnny as a country-pop star. The song went on to be recorded by 108 artists including Elvis Presley and, most recently, it became a #l selling country hit by Billy Joe Royal.
With 18 Chart records to his credit, he moved to M.G.M Records where his first release, "Talk Back Trembling Lips", was a huge success. This was followed by another 8 chart records including "Heartaches By The Number", which gave Johnny his second Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Performance. He also recorded the popular hit theme song for the T.V. show "Gidget" (1965), starring Sally Field. His other hits included "She Understands Me", "Worry", and "You're The Reason". These hits and his endearing personality and stage presence have enabled Johnny to have a very successful concert career, entertaining audiences all over the world.

It's a shame today's generation could never appreciate classics like this gem
I'm 15 and I do
From my favourite era for popular music, 1955-63.
My grandma used to love songs like this... Espcially this one... But 2 years ago she died from cancer...R.I.P LOVE YOU GRAMMY!!!!
He's such a decent guy grew up taking care of his grandmother who taught him to be well mannered.
Hello Cheryl, How are you doing
Love you Johnny! 😍😍😍😍😍
Born in 1958 and still listen to an a.m. radio station that plays music the way it was when music was music. today's music sucks. too much screaming and swearing. no beat. no theme to songs. Since I own a bowling alley, I can honestly say: press my reset button also!
I use to listen to Johnny all the time. You can understand what he is singing, not like todays music!
So called "music." 🙄
"Talk Back trembling Lips" is one of quite a few excellent works done by JT. His voice is great for love songs and those songs have a story or message . One of the great performers of the American era in pop music.
Pretty good country singer too
Well said, totally agree.. Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
Imagine an artist recording a song like this today in our age of quick and dirty electronically generated music. When you think about how much went into a 2-1/2 minute pop tune back in the 60s, full orchestration, words you could understand, it's head and shoulders above today's stuff Thanks for posting!
So very true wot u say we live in a sadder world music wise today
So True‼ 🤜🤛 👍
rehearsing over and over again
Totally agree with your wonderful comments . Simplicity in the form of a wonderful singing voice/talent/ presentation/ wonderful presentation along with a simple orchestral backing , pure talent. So much better than the garbage churned out today . Can you imagine the 'artists' of these days being asked to do this Mmm. me thinks not ! Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
I love his back up musicians - they are not only talented but unique. I have watched the way some of them play & it's different than today's junk.
Old time country music is the only country music I listen to.
I got to meet him when I was 14yo. He is the most wonderful person. I'm 71 and still listening. Love his music and him. One of my favorites I RISE,I FALL
You're so lucky.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy. I hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face.
How could I have nearly forgotten Johnny Tillotson? Many thanks for all the memories his songs have brought back!
My mom got me hooked on this man, Johnny Tillotson, while growing up. He is a great singer and I love this song!! Oh.. and I think he is so cute!!
Me too! ❤️❤️❤️
This one of Johnny Tillotsons best ever singles
I agree with u
Me tooo...
I Miss those days. So many wonderful music came out back then!
Wow I've been listening to this song for about 60 years
50s. 60s and 70s are the years of greatest music of all times.
You will never get an argument from me about your comment:)
I agree with you but I admit that one or two from the later years have slipped through don't know why. Love Dance The Night Away by The Mavericks
You are so right! These were great times for music!
Amen! The best!
Yeah, they sure were! I stay up so late at night just to listen to all the good oldies!
Take away computers cell phones, all the high tech stuff of today and give me back my 1965 falcon and my radio--and Johnny of course!! Still love this man!
Lin Lou I agree! I grew up in the 50's & 60's! Fun times! The Best music!!!
Back in the Real Day was the best! Love when I grew up!
There is no other music like this music. This stuff they call country music is terrible I don't care for the music of this eria
You can still buy that old stuff - its available on Ebay! It's ironic that you are using fantastic modern technology to listen to this!
Johnny was among the greatest singers of my time. The music of the 50s & 60s was the best. I switched to country music in the early 70s.
Haven't heard this in years! Love his voice!
Whenever I listen to any of these old country classics they put me in a better place.
Better times for me too. From Jerry Bast
U r so rite johnny at his best
It’s funny because I absolutely loathe modern country music but the old stuff is absolutely incredible.
Mr Tillotson was a major crossover artist.
Great song from 1964!!!
He has such a beautiful voice.Love this song.
Love Johnny alaways have
Someone has to be with me my kids are all working or out of town❤🎉
The era of crying in your beer music, I love em!
BORN 1949...THIS IS THE MUSIC I GREW UP WITH......I FEEL SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE THAT LISTEN TO THE CRAP THEY HAVE NOWADAYS
Steven Teague amen.
Same year, same sentiment.
I was born in 1949 too. I love to sit and listen to these songs and I also try to get my Grandson on board. I just bought him an IPOD. He has a lot of songs in his Itunes account, but nothing like these songs from the 60's. He does like Blake Shelton. He seldom listens to his music now, too involved on his IPAD listening to RUclips and watching RUclips videos. He is 8 years old. I had a transistor radio back when I was 8, burning up batteries while listening to my kind of great music back in the day.
Johnny Tillotson, Sonny James, Ben E. King and so on...This was real music....WHAT HAPPEN ????????????
me too born in 44
The best of johnny tillotson
He was a great singer from back in the early 60's. He had super hits which you cannot find today. Thank you Johnny!!.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy. I hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face.
He still is. He just cut a song bill anderson wrote back then called "get a little dirt on your hands". Still has that smothering voice❤
These were the ultimate love songs. You can hear the words, great melody, can dance to.
There never will be another johnny t, ever, that was the good times❤
Did you ever hear him sing the song, Another YOU? It was on the album I had. You can probably Google it. I love that song.
I never grow tired of this song and many others by Johnny Tillotson. I can still do this word for word and in his voice. My close friend, the late Alton (Al) Hendrickson did the guitar for this one, and countless others as 1st studio guitarist in Hollywood for over 40 years.
Good stuff for sure. The "music" of today can't hold a candle to songs which one could understand and sing along with.
I love this song
TOLLER SÄNGER UND KOMPONIST!!! ER HATTE EINIGE GROßE HITS!!! DAUMEN HOCH!!!!
love his music , one of my old time favorites singers . never get tired of hearing his songs .
Ditto. Love Johnny! ❤️
Same here
A great singer
Another great composition by John D. Loudermilk
One of my favorite pop/country singers in the 1960’s. My mom’s too.
me 2
Johnny Tiliotson 💞💯
I remember this from my childhood! Love this and all of his songs!
johnny was at fort jackson s.c. when he recorded this classic..............a friend of mine knew him then..........
It is a good song and it brings back memories. I would also give a thumbs up, but it won't work for me any more since RUclips denied me that feature. Supposedly, I gave too many thumbs up.
I used to drive to Palatka all the time, worked in a little town called Salt Springs, FL. If I would have known then..that Johnny lived there, I'd have at least tried to look him up. I met him at the MGM in Las Vegas back in the early 70s, even got my picture taken with him.
Beautiful Voice Beautiful Song..💕
This dang song is so catchy I wake up with song stuck in my head on repeat.
I fell in love with music as a little boy and by high school I knew music was going to be my obsession ! I haven’t heard this song in a long time !
This guy put out some beautiful songs. Thank you for posting his best.
Wow... cute and sweet vocals ♡ why can't music today sound like this anymore? These songs back then had meanings. Golden classics, best era for music hands down!
There still is good music being produced, It just will never get onto the typical "country music" radio station. I listened to real country music starting in about63 when 12 yrs old. It was absolutely magical. It sent shivers up your spine. Today, the worst torture would be to put me in a room and force me to listen to modern country music indefinitely. It has changed that much.
Why the change? These are far different times. One small reason might be that most of these singers from those earlier years learned to sing in church. Think about that fact, and (all it implies) for a while.
37rainman the awesome influence of GOD is what methinx.
He created free will...that's what ....no 'ifs' about it!
Everyone needs to stop complaining about todays music. Every generation has
their own special 'sound'. Don't insult others because you are stuck in the past.
Roberta Mitsy because country music died in the 80s
We were standing back stage talking with him right before he went on the Teen Jamboree show in Little ROck in 64....he almost wore out that little comb he kept using, before he went on.
Great song, nice voice, great entertainer Mr. Johnny Tillotson Thanks.
Lovely Johnny....So many memories🎵🎶🎼📻 LOVE THIS one
I AM VERLIN AND I LIVED THROUGH THE 60'S AND I WOULD HIT THE RESET BUTTON IN A HEART BEAT
I would too Verlin. And I would have even more fun knowing what I know now!
ME TOO.
+Delores Tidwell me too. I figure I survived the 60's. Navy 66-70. Nam 67-68. even with all that going on, i'd hit the reset button if I could find it. bless you and your family.
+Delores Tidwell Amen to that! If only we could climb in that time machine....
+Delores Tidwell ME TOO
Merci pour ce partage en live
Johnny Tillotson est vraiment un grand chanteur. Superbe chanson de 1964
Très agréable à écouter
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happier. I hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face.
This was a big US hit for Johnny in 1963. One of his best.
He is a great singer and this is one of his best. It is hard to pick the best version; this or the original by Ernest Ashworth. They are both excellent.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy. I hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face.
Johnny hands down!
I kinda miss these days when the singer actually had to know how to sing instead of using auto tune. :).
Those were the best years of music! Miss them! Loved when I grew up!
Or that you could understand the lyrics without having to google them!
Agreed
Mind you Top of the Pops was major lip-synced.
I could not have said that any better.I grew up on old country. And it still holds a special place in my heart.Hank Williams..I'm so lonesome.
And too many to name.
I listen to them every Saturday. As I break out the pine sol and deep clean. Old habits die hard. Because I won't let them ..lol. Have a great day, and God bless you !
I played a show with Johnny and Paul and Paula back in 1963 with our band The Seventeens - at Evansville, Indiana.. Johnny Tillotson was an awesome entertainer.. It would be nice to go back to those days....
+Bill Smith
Bill, you were so very fortunate. We can't go back but we can cherish our memories, can't we!
I love listening to the old classic country songs
What a great entertainer.Part of my life growing up.
Best time ever to grow up. I'd hit the reset and do it all over if I could!
I ran into Johnny at Disneyland last week with his family. He was very gracious and friendly as can be. Great singer!
Really???
I'm so jealous that you were with him. I would give anything to meet him. 😞🙏

His eyes are so delicate this is a very musical and spiritual man. A jewel.

+tampicokid the new its shit !
+msred boot come on it has no melodie , it just dadadadadadfa
Nice clean cut, even wearing a suit. A man who doesn't have to prove a thing & soft voice, where do I get me one!!
This was our style in those days.
If possible, wearing also glasses to impress the girls.
Don't believe but it worked ....
:-)
You can see how much he enjoys singing. He's the best singer. Music I have lived thru. Wish I could do it again. I'm glad there was so much good music then.
♡Oldies but Goodies
He was a special singer and will not be forgotten.
I had a crush on this guy when I was a kid love him still love him 70 years later ❤❤
Excellent
i was born in 54 & cant remember not hearing this tune on the radio
Yes, I was so young but I can remember my father playing the radio in the car and this was sooo popular. Oh, the memories.
I was born in 53 and have loved these songs all of my life! Music today is good, but does not have their hearts into it!
Born 1989 and i like this kind of music, by the way both of us were born April 20… 😉
My grandmother loves this song!!!! Keep up the great work
❤I love the old music and Johnny has a beautiful voice ❤
Love his songs❤
Very good song, remember listening to this song on radio when I played hookie from school
OH MY, brilliant footage to a great little number
I remember playing this repeatedly on the Wurlitzer at the local soda shop down the block. Still a great song!
While Johnny Tillotson had this hit on the Hot 100 pop chart, a year earlier Ernest Ashworth hit #1 on the Hot Country Tracks chart with this song.
I have not heard this for many years, i use to have this on plastic, well before cd's...you have done a good job putting this on...thank you.
Hello Christine, How are you doing?
I wonder if you meant 'vinyl' instead of 'plastic'?
i was born in 1965 i was brought up on this music, thank you.
he was so darn cute...loved this guy in 1964......i had a mad crush on him....and yhat voice, so smooth....
Brings back great memories. Oh, Talk Back All Those Memories.
Great old song!

Another Johnny Tillotson favorite. God wouldn't I like to be able to go back to the first time I heard this one.
Beautiful... been listening to this stuff my whole life...and I'm not even thirty...
Gees great RI c someone u age enjoying this music good on u
@@christinevicker9017 Yep, I'm 55 now but I also came to this music as a teenager. It's classic and almost universally appealing - from the era when everyone who recorded could genuinely sing without the aid of horrible pitch correction technology.
Is he not one of the greatest singers of his reign Such passion and sincerity in his words Love that era
Beautiful I love this song
I am not really a country fan ,but this musik was all right.wish they still made more like that.
Reminds me of my mom...😭😭😭
Me too. This song and Downtown..😢
Sure, this era, to me, seems incredibly charming and in ways more simple, which I would appreciate. I wouldn't go ahead and say our time right now is 'doomed' or as bad as a lot of people on here say, not at all. There are completely different set of values today, for a lot of people, so of course songs and music will change their theme, moods, beats, speeds; you name it. Almost certain though, that there are people, who love this type of music but also pursue to revive it. All music that ever was, still is. Cheers.

Miss the hood music of the 50s 60s still listen to oldies station in car
Always been one of my favorites!
John I get the feeling that we are from the same age. I'm 1946, We got to listen and share some of the best music this old world has ever heard. The kids now days don'tknow what they are missing. Keep on playing 'em and I'll keep listenin'. Great work.
i from 1949 the music had meaning /a story to tell and you could sing along or where nobody could hear you hahaha very good times
