    Actually Saiki is the lead vocalist, but no harm, no foul. Three years ago, while I was in quaranteen due to Covid, I was bored and scrolling through the internet and pulled up "Domination". My first reaction was "Wait, these are all women playing hard rock music and doing it so well. That single video launched my journey with this band. I realized how much in command Saiki was in control of the audience and went wild. Then MISA did that bass solo, then Kanami, then Akane. Holy crap! Now I've been to two of their concerts, the second of which I flew from Atlanta to Minneapolis. I never thought I would be doing that. Now when they announce any tour spots in the U.S., I'm going to be there no matter what the cost. This band has recorded over 130 songs in ten years, not one of them bad and many,many, many of them excellent.

    As for Kanami's guitar, in the mix. It is a very common complaint that it's a bit too quiet (and over-compressed), in this Domination mix. Most reactors pick up on it, too. They've had better production in other live performances.
    I did attend BAND-MAID live, last year, on their USA tour. Partly, it's because I was three rows back right under the right-hand speaker---but... Kanami's guitar was extremely loud, and right out in the front, where it belongs. (I wore some ear protection, and needed it.)
    An issue in listening to BAND-MAID on head-phones, is that Kanami is usually panned way, way to the right. Which is common for the lead guitar in Japanese rock mixes, more so than in the USA. So, you get her mostly just in one ear. Play the same BAND-MAID song on a big speaker system in your living room, and you get more Kanami, since she's getting into both ears.

    The bassist switches back and forth from slapping with her thumb, and popping the strings with her other fingers, and using a pick. If you go back and watch it again, you can see her tuck her pick into the bend of her index finger and pull it back out. It's like a magic trick.

      She also hybrid picks, taps, and more. Everything happens so fast it's hard to see often.

    One of the great Hard Rock performances of all time by THE best Hard Rock band of the 21st century. I saw the likes of Zeppelin, Zappa, Queen and The Who in the 70's, among many others, and Band-Maid easily match the musicianship, songwriting, lyricism, stage presence and crowd control of all of those greats. But Band-Maid do it with constant smiles and joy and total lack of ego's. 🤘🤘DOMINATION live was the 22nd song of their 23 song set and begins with a segue that is the dying away of the last note of the previous song PLAY. At 7:00 - MISA, the bassist, Kanami the lead guitarist and composer, and Miku the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band, are playing Hengao - "strange faces" - with Akane the drummer, which is making funny faces to try and put someone off. Akane, of course, laughs along while not missing a beat. It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. As you noticed, at 9:00, MISA the bassist is holding her plectrum in her curled finger so she can produce it and switch from slapping to picking in half a nanosecond! At Akane the drummer hitting two separate beats on her double kick pedals while simultaneously continuing the song melody on her snare, toms and cymbal. At 11:00 - a brief glimpse of Kanami laying down one sweet rolling chord pattern - pure class. PS Gotta ask as you're an audio engineer and the first person in many years of watching reactions to this that I've heard mention any compression, would you recommend using those earbuds you're wearing rather than headphones for noticing things like that?

    Very interesting reaction. I have always thought that there was something slightly off about Kanami's guitar. At times it seems hidden and even that parts of it are missing, especially at the very beginning. It was nice to hear you say something similar about this. Thanks for bringing your analysis to this song. You gave us several possible reasons for it and explained well what might be happening to cause this. It was kind of interesting that it was the lead guitar since Misa"s bass seems to come through loud and clear and often you can hear her but it is a struggle. I have subscribed and am really looking forward to listening to music together, especially since you can add to it by bringing your expertise. Well done Sir!!!!!

    Yeah this is from the LCS Shibuya show. This show has the best audience noise but the mix suffers. Since then they have toned down the audience noise and improved the mix of the instruments (the Hate Live is a good example of that).

  • @johngiambrone2994

    They don’t try to outshine each other. Each member will have a spot to stand out. There isn’t an ego problem amongst the members. One of many things that fans hold dear.
    Kanami writes a lot of the music and then passes it onto the other members to see what they can do with it. Miku and Saiki do the lyrics. Misa(bass) adds her thoughts as does Akane(drums). What you have in the end is a Band Maid song. It’s not one person but, the band comes together as one.

    Achi is legendary for how well she has her kit miked up. Her attention to detail is incredible. She generally runs a low pass filter to make more room for her super buddy MISA on the bass. They have this advantage of vocals in the upper register leaving more room in the middle.

    It’s over for you 😂 You’re doomed to be a Maidiac. How do I know such a thing?
    Because Saiki’s little “grr” stopped your world from turning 🌎
    That was no small thing. It’s not on the studio cut, but it’s impact in this live show wasn’t lost on her. She now does the “grr” in every single performance of this song.
    Saiki is a commanding presence. She’s both a dancer and singer, so she brings movements and expressions to her work. And her ability to communicate emotions is truly extraordinary. She has plenty of surprises ahead for you.
    After these two legendary lives, how about one of their songs actually best served by music video? Band Maid has a few. Based on your comments and the things you like, here’s my recommendation:
    “DICE,” official music video.

    The various audio mixes of their concerts and studio tracks is a subject of discussion among fans. The general idea of this concert was to provide more audience volume in the chants. But it affected the guitars. One thing they seem to always get right is the drums and bass guitar. Their rhythm section is a key component of their "sound".

    The common complaint about the Shibuya Concert blu-ray, which this is taken from, is thst the guitars were too low in the mix. So its not just you. This is probably a post-production decision, as the guitars are fairly well forward whrn you hear them in person.

    Others have covered a few things you pointed out. I will point out a few things.
    First, to really HEAR Band-Maid live, I personally suggest quality over the ear open back head phones. MISA's and Akane's bass and drums cut through much better.
    Second, Kanami is known to cut the gain on her amp in live performances. EXCEPT during her solos. She has a button on her pedal board controller specifically to boost her signal and to switch her cabinet to stereo. Hence why she has 2 mic's on her cab. The rest of the time she is far right panned and unboosted. There are photos of her pedal board showing her separate switch for her solo channel. She uses a 3 channel amplifier, so she runs a wet signal, a dry signal , and then a stereo signal. When running stereo, her signal is split part ways into the left channel to thicken it during her solos. So at the end of the breakdown after Akane played her brief fill/solo Kanami switched to solo and you had mentioned how her signal got louder. That is why.
    Third, the Ladies currently have over 130 songs in their discography NOT including alternate versions. Alternate versions include acoustic, semi-acoustic, special intros, enhanced bridges, extended solos, and, on occasion, additional verses. With the alternate versions added into their discography, the ladies have over 160 songs. In 10 years. So you know of any OTHER band that is prolific? Or as good? When I say as good I don't mean just the band being better than other, although theybare near the very top of their niche. I mean I know of no other band thatbhas a discography as large that has NO, ZERO, NONE, ZILCH bad or less than good songs.

    Also, many other reactors realized that not only do they need headphones to properly hear Band-Maid but that they need to turn up the volume. For some reason Band-Maid MVs are not as loud as other bands. So turn them up and enjoy everything going on underneath.

  • @DaveJonesVideo
    @DaveJonesVideo 16 дней назад +5

    Misa is a magician with the pick on her bass. She seamlessly switches back and forth between plucking the strings and picking them. She spent a lot of time learning how to flip the pick between her fingers the way a magician hides a card between their fingers. That lets her switch between plucking and picking with no delay.

    Great review of one of the gateway songs for Band Maid. This was one of the first 5 videos I ever saw of them, late 2022. This live version has had many people wondering about the guitar presence in the mix. Also, MISA swapped slap and pick techniques a few times during the solo, she holds the pic between her fingers for "easy" 😆switching. 🤘

    Kanami's engineer uses a pair of Sennheiser E906 mics, one on each of the top 12" speakers in her cabinet, it sounds a lot like the phase is flipped on one of them and summed as her guitar sounds like it is being picked up by other mics, it sounds like a far field pickup, not close mic'd at all.

  • @geoffb5
    @geoffb5 16 дней назад +1

    Up until recently Domination-live was the song fans would tell reactors to do. Unless the reactor was a drummer then Freedom-live was the main request. Hate? live, first the version that was streamed on Hulu from Lollapalooza even though it wasn't a perfect video, and then the version from Yokohama arena that they released on their YT channel, which is a great video, has become the gateway-song to request for new reactors.
    Try From Now On and/or Shambles MVs next.

  • @daaaaaave
    @daaaaaave 16 дней назад +5

    Domination live was a great staple track to introduce people because everyone gets a little feature, but it does suffer from its mixing and/or compression. This happens on their studio tracks as well. The guitar has been too low for years. Hate, and the Yokohama show in general, has a much better, more guitar-forward mix, and their spin off show is higher, still.
    Someone else in these comments mentioned that the ambient/crowd sound could be washing it out a little, and I could see that. In the official live of Don't You Tell Me, also from Yokohama, there are some crowd participation parts, and they're really low, but all of the instruments and everything sound great. It's just unfortunate, because it kind of sounds like part of the song is missing, because Saiki is letting the crowd do it, and you can't hear them.

    The Mix this is only just acceptable for BAND-MAID. The room mics for the audience response made for a very ambient sounding mix and the Bass very unfocused. If you want to hear a good mix try 'Real Existence' LIVE. Everyone comments that Kanami's guitar level doesn't "Kick You In The Teeth". But in most of the time she's playing little fiddly bits over Miku's chords, and she doesn't change her level much for the leads. And, yes, they consider themselves Hard Rock, but they have Metal influenced songs, as well as just about every other genre. Punk, Funk, Power Pop Jazz, Classical and Japanese Traditional, even soft acoustic ballads. They do it all. Over Compressed!??? That's what Rick Beato said, and just dismissed them after a couple songs, not even videos mind you. And he has two daughters. He should be singing their praises! I don't care if they are over compresses. They're still a great band with great songs. Also, get some proper headphones. One simply cannot truly appreciate BAND-MAID with earbuds. I think this mix was a reaction to people saying that BAND-MAID didn't play their own instruments. It's true they play to backing tracks, but all of those are played by Kanami as well. But they may have gotten tired of people saying to was too perfect for them to really be playing for themselves.

  • @KittyKarenpoo
    @KittyKarenpoo 16 дней назад

    I believe they let the lead guitar stay in the mix more, in the beginning, because they are contrasting that to the bridge, wherein they definitely pull that lead out front, particularly after the drum solo. And yes, you did see Misa slap bass playing with the pic buried between her fingers, only to see her pull that out from between her fingers and seamlessly go back to playing with the pic. The overcompression is likely caused by all the instruments being so loud together, and that's natural, but also they were pushing that 2-gujitar moment to grunge, which is deliberately overcompressed, so it works pretty well.

    Kanami was very reluctant to be mixed forward for a long time until basically saiki (her crush) told her to step forward more. Previously she had pushed MISA (bass) forward against the norm. The turning point was possibly the instrumental "from now on" that you must see the MV of.

    Thanks for your sound engineer's opinion. It's obvious to everyone that the Shibuya version of Domination is a great performance played at 110% by each member. But as you point out the mix kinda varies in quality. The recent Yokohama concert is better IMO, and the best one by far (again, my opinion) is the recent spin-off concert, which is still available to buy and stream. My hope is that we'll be seeing one or two from that concert on their official channel.

    Your reaction to this song kind of mimics what a lot of people think. All 3 guitars are too low in the mix. I will admit, their sound engineer is a master technician on their live shows. I saw them 3 times last year. One venue was long and narrow (cap. 800), another was short and wide (cap 800) and the third was Yokohama Arena (cap. 10000) {where Hate? was recorded} and they all sounded perfect. This is my favorite song from Band-Maid and I am in the minority in preferring the studio version over this live version. For me, Kanami's guitar over everyone else makes it number one for me and unfortunately, it gets muffled here.
