- So many people asked for more Band-Maid so here we go! I really enjoyed the first song Hate? that I heard and was eager to hear more and I was not disappointed. I felt like both of these songs really showed off how strong of a band they are.
Thanks for getting In The Pit! Have a song you think I would like? Leave a comment below and if I haven't heard it, I'll put it on the list.

Although this was an online live performance, I was very appreciative of it when they did it. I will not forget the feeling I had to be able to see them 'live' although I could not go see them live, if that makes any sense. And yes, we were very restricted from any group activities here in Japan. No sporting events or concerts.
"Manners" is the story of their struggles through the years. "Black Hole" is the controlled chaos in the best way that Band-Maid excels at!
Gear at the time of this recording:
Kanami (Kah-nah-mee) (Lead Guitar); PRS Guitars and Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier (and a pedal board that appears to be Battlestar Galactica)
Miku (Mee-koo) (Rhythm Guitar, Second Vocals): Zemaitis guitars and EVH 5150, Helix Line 6 (I think)
Misa (Mee-sah) (Bass) Black Cloud custom (Yes, a Japanese high-end boutique luthier) and Orange
Akane (Ah-kah-nay) (Drums): Tama Star Bubinga, Zildjian cymbals, Wincent 5B sticks
Saiki (Sai-kee/Sigh-key) (Lead Vocals): Not sure but I think for a.time they were using Sennheiser mics.
Current gear (used during "Hate?" performance) :
Kanami (Lead Guitar); PRS Guitars and Bogner Ecstasy Pandora (and a pedal board that appears to be Battlestar Galactica)
Miku (Rhythm Guitar, Second Vocals): Zemaitis guitars and EVH 5150, Helix Line6
Misa (Bass) Black Cloud custom and Aguilar amplification
Akane (Drums): Tama Star Bubinga, Zildjian cymbals, Wincent 5B sticks
Saiki (Lead Vocals): Not sure but I think for a.time they were using Sennheiser mics.
Kanami is a PRS-endorsed artist and is formerly an Addictone artist with one signature model.
Miku is a Zemaitis-endorsed artist with two signature models.
Misa is a Black Cloud-endorsed artist with, I believe, at least one signature model.
Akane is a Tama-endorsed artist and also has a Wincent signature model.
Dude you have earn a Sub when you compare Band-Maid to Rush in that context.
My thoughts exactly!
agreed!
Thank you for your reaction and Welcome to the Unseen World, the name of the album. There are a number of great MVs, studio versions, and if you want a studio sound, Blooming being suggested earlier, I second that. Have fun! :)
The "Manners" MV is fantastic. It gives you the impression that this band existed in the 70s.
I think we've all been trained to think that about studio version being optimal and for a lot of bands that's true, but for a lot of these Japanese bands and Band-Maid I feel the most, the studio version is just a starting point. Kanami never stops composing, the girls never stop improving, adding different more complex riffs to old songs, adding intros and extended solos, and changing and growing original solos. The magic to Band-Maid lays heavily in the raw rock sound. The only band I can think of a comparison (even though I'm not really a fan) is The Greatful Dead. Listening to the studio version just doesn't do them the justice they deserve. And with multiple members going to music school and studying audio engineering and producing they know how to use their instruments as weapons in a live mix.
"Manners" is the equilibrium to the controlled chaos of "Black Hole" & the Balance is restored.😌
@rogerchance9074 Omnipresent Roger is your nickname, that's how you know :)
@rogerchance9074 HAHA.😆 Yeah "Hanging out" being the operative words. I't's been a while since their last reaction, maybe they're away somewhere filming stuff?😏
@rogerchance9074 LMAO.😂 They'll say "This action was suggested by Roger Chance".🤭
Great bookends showing their diversity!
You're a deep thinker Gary, and a day early probably because of the space distortion.⚫
In these MV´s MISA (bass) is playing the Orange, Miku (Rythm guitar/Vocals) is playing the EVH set up, and Kanami (Lead guitarist/songwriter) is playing Mesa Boogie - and I think it is the Triple Rectifier...... Nice work!!!!!

Good guess on it being a pandemic era live streamed concert. They performed several times in livestreams during the pandemic. They really love performing live concerts with audiences and that is where they really shine. Take care and have a great day!
Yeah. Really sharp observation. Great ear. Easy sub. Thanks for checking out the maids.
What we say is you're going down the "pigeon-hole" lol
Band Maid is one of the rare bands who consistently outperform their studio tracks. There’s an intangible magic. The interaction between them and their fans generates some extra mojo.
Their sound crew is also phenomenally consistent. I’ve heard them up close. Made sure to stand in front of Kanami’s amp because her work often gets buried in the dense, compressed studio tracks. It was unforgettable ❤
Great reaction and your Rush comparison is spot in. Their instrumental song called Onset gives me shades of Rush. Have a listen. Rock on 🤘
These ladies are influenced by everything, including Iron Maiden (perhaps indirectly), 70's classic rock, progressive rock (as you saw here in Black Hole) and they'll even throw in straight ahead jazz and country swing for a few bars. They are not limited, which is one of the many super fun things about them. You never know what you're in for, but you know it'll be a treat! And again, I like your intelligent commentary.
Band Maid is quite self sufficient. Over 80 of their 100+ songs are band written, music and lyrics. Lead guitarist Kanami is main composer and also makes up backing music tracks. Drummer and Bass refines the their respective portions of music. Miku and Saiki do the same with the vocals. All 3 guitarists have recently changed their amp/cabinet set-ups.
I hear some subtle Iron Maiden/NWOBHM/80s-90s European rock/metal similarities in their music, for sure, but it's probably unlikely that they got most of those influences directly from Maiden or Priest. Kanami (Lead guitar and main music composer) has a wide range of influences from Santana, Larry Carlton/fusion, to EVH, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert. She cut her guitar teeth on lots of Western hard rock and metal, including Metallica (heavily influenced by Maiden), but I don't think she's ever mentioned Maiden or Priest. It's possible but we don't know. Before she picked up guitar at 17 she was a classically-trained pianist and only really played/listened to classical music.
I know in recent years she was also listening to A7X/Brian Haner (AKA Synyster Gates) and they've done one Slipknot cover. Her bandmates also have a variety of alt/rock/metal favorites but they tend to be more 90s/2000s bands including Trivium, Slipknot, Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies, RHCP, Korn, Foo Fighters, Muse, some 60/70s classic rock, and a bunch of Japanese alt/rock/pop artists.
Saiki is a fan of David Bowie, among many other things.
That's quite common that so many different songs from this band are requested, as we can all agree, there are so many to choose from, all as either as good as the previous one or better, plus, no one can agree a matching top 10 let alone a top 5, even a top 3 would probably be a stretch
Great reaction and this is a good demonstration of the range of their music, Manners and Black Hole are bookends to the breath of they music. This was from a live stream during the virus lock down.
So, now you listened to a live performance with some solos and very special lyrics (Hate?), a striped back groove rock song (Manners) and a very fast and nearly chaotic experiment (Blackhole). It's time for some history (Thrill as well as Real Existence live) ... a catchy chorus (Choose me) ... their best live performance (Freedom live) ... a ballad (About us) ... and much more 😂❤ po 🕊️
"Bestie"! 😍😍
@@VladimirChupin Oh yes, Vladimir! Times changes .. forget the past (for now) and just watch the wonderful new MV for their new song "Bestie"!
I hear punk, metal and progrock (on speed😉) influences in Black Hole...organized chaos! :)
People hear influences of what they themselves know and listen to 😊
For me BAND-MAID is heavily influenced by King Crimson and Metallica, for instance. I listened to some Iron Maiden when I was young, but I never liked them, so, I forgot them rather quickly. But King Crimson and Metallica were always my favorite bands (among a few others), and I'm happy to call BAND-MAID "prog metal" because of that 😁
Thanks for the reaction and comments. As you've discovered, the one thing lacking from these ladies of Band-Maid is a weak link. They are all incredibly proficient musicians with a common mindset of serving the song. For studio versions, check out Blooming, Shambles, From Now On, Dice, and Influencer (all MVs) to start. Looking forward to your next reaction video. Cheers!
Excellent reaction! Your musical insights were spot on. What’s cool about them is that they play a wide variety of rock from punk to prog, they even do acoustic concerts.
Acoustic concerts: Yeah I wish Band Maid would release their recent acoustic on DVD and Blu-ray.
@@randymcmillen647 Who knows, maybe they will? Let's start a petition 😊
@@VladimirChupinI want to see Saiki playing piano with the Band. Also when the new album is released I hope that it's going to have Saiki in one of the white room performances.
@@randymcmillen647 She plays the piano pretty well now. I think Kanami will attempt to involve Saiki in the instrumental part more and more. It would be interesting, for instance, Saiki playing the keyboard part in "from now on." Now it plays off a backing track, but to have it live would be interesting.
Kanami (lead guitar) plays PRS Custom 24's through Bogner Pandora XTC amp and Mesa Boogie 4x12 cab (She used to use Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifiers as in this MV). She is a PRS official artiste.
MISA on Bass uses Black Cloud Basses, a boutique company from Japan. She no longer runs through Orange, she has switched to Aguilar Amps. MISA is a Black Cloud artiste with her own signature model.
Miku on rhythm guitar plays Zemaitis Guitars through 5150's in Japan (but uses Marshall's when touring abroad). She is a Zemaitis artist with her own signature model called 'The Flappy Pigeon'.
Akane on Drums does use Tama - a five piece Tama Star Bubinga kit with Zildjian cymbals. Her snare isn't Tama though, it was a Ludwig Black Beauty 14x5 but recently switched to a Gretsch G4169BBR Bell Brass snare.
Miku also played a new Zemaitis guitar at Yokohama Arena, looking like her old "Buccaneer Island", but with pigeons on the fretboard. I think I saw a comment from Miku on this design somewhere... Maybe in the Documentary on Making Of Yokohama Arena? I have to watch it again.
@@VladimirChupin Hi Vladimir, hope you are well! Yes I've seen that, I wonder what she has called it? 😀
@@Davey-Boyd Yes, it's a bit strange thing that this new signature guitar is not promoted at all. It's not secret, but it seems there is just one copy made for Miku, and Zemaitis does not plan (for now?) any batch production. Flappy Pigeon was a resounding success, I'm sure this new one would also find its collectors.
The problem may be actually with the birds on the fretboard. If we are talking about BAND-MAID, it looks like Miku just wanted a guitar which would match Kanami's PRS, but from a copyright point of view, it looks like bordering on trademark infringement. Maybe Zemaitis talked to PRS, and they agreed that one copy for BAND-MAID is fine, especially since there is a PRS endorser in the band, but PRS was probably against mass production of such a design.
thanks for the reaction.....I'm not a musician but i really appreciate the way you break down the songs and explain the details of the songs which I could never do....subscribed
Much appreciated!
It might be a synthesizer sound track, but MISA plays alto horn and trumpet as well as piano and bass. Akane plays piano, trombone, and ,of course, drums.
In Band-Maid, Misa and her bass are always highlighted! MISA, MISA, MISA!!
Good job Steve. Just travel down the pigeon hole and you'll eventually get to listen on your own. The MV for FROM NOW ON is my top choice right now. Hopefully it will change in a couple months when the new album is released. Maids on FIRE. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Peace. 132
Manners is top tier Band Maid! ♥
Here are some great studio/music videos of Band Maid: Thrill, Dice, Bubble & Blooming
Best Rock band worldwide, period.
Just great! 'Freedom' Live is hella fun and BTW...Maids don't travel by van...they car-surf (see their 'Warning' MV). The studio compositions are great and then the lives are an extra gift...usually more bass-heavy but then, if you have a barefoot whiskey-drinkin bass assassin...you gotta let her off the chain some 😁 My favourite most-played studio track is 'Dice' so I heartily recommend the MV. Absolutely love the guitar layers and the whole track is perfection for me. Enjoy the pigeon hole my friend 👍🤘🤘🤘
Good job for sure. Now how abour "fom now on", "unleash", "influencer" ??? have a great day !
Another band that every band member is essential to it's sound is The Warning, a three sister rock group from Japan. They will be performing with Band-Maid in Japan in June, btw.
A typo ther. The Warning sisters are from Mexico. Other than that, I totally agree. If he likes when all can sing, and actually all get to shine and do their part, then the Warning is a brilliant example. But not only that, they are scary good and very nice young ladies.
The Warning is not from Japan, they are from Mexico.
@@rolandkarlsson7072 Typo indeed, oops!
You have a great ear and I like your style. Freedom was an early song and IMO the studio recording is lacking compared to the live. Play and Don't You Tell Me are a couple of good lives to check out before the studio.
Don't You Tell Me is the Friday video this week!
Your in the Pigeon hole PO!
Kanami- the main song writer and lead guitarist, sometimes likes to use a subtle backing track. Sometimes horns as you said or a keyboard of some kind which she plays.
I think Kanami may be just programming these sounds into the backing track, using samples.
This was one of their Covid Era concerts.
If you're really interested in finding out more about their equipment choices, check out the white backdrop instrumentals. My personal favorite is 'Without Holding Back'.
WARNING! (maybe your next B-M song?) It's bad MANNERS to stop listening to Band-Maid because you'll feel starved for musical excellence and joy and fall into a BLACK HOLE of emptiness... probably! 🤔 Thx, Steve!
Nice!
Here is a suggestion for the reactor dilemma of having to wait until you react to listen to more. Grab the World Domination and/or Unseen world album. Scratch off the videos they have live or official videos to and listen to the rest of the album on your own. They don’t have bad songs, they just can only release so many videos.
Honestly you can do this with any of their albums, but I think those are good starting points for you.
I can't support this comment enough. Reactors, you needn't deprive yourselves! And if an older song gets an MV - unlikely given how prolific they are - it's going to be live and hit different (and likely have extra music) than the studio track.
If you liked MANNERS, try these two earlier songs: BUBBLE and THE NON-FICTION DAYS (OMV for both).
You're right, there is a horn line in Manners, but MISA is playing it on the bass. Where have you ever heard of that kind of shit? She even backs up the vocal lines in their new song "Bestie".
If you want a pedalboard breakdown you're in luck! Jack from the JBF Music & Guitar channel has just done one 3 days ago! Here's the link : ruclips.net/video/yT8he3SyG_g/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Yes, I was also going to recommend this one 😊
If you want to see a Japanese band that are masters of reaching into the basket and grabbing various and disparate genres and cramming them into the same song yet somehow making it all work brilliantly, you should check out the band MAXIMUM THE HORMONE. I would recommend their song "Yoshu Fukushu" as a great starting point for them. Akane, the drummer for Band-Maid, said she was inspired to take up drumming by the Maximum the Hormone drummer, Nao.
Brass and piano backing track but FYI it's been commented that both the drummer and bassist have played brass instruments in school. Kanami, the lead guitarist is a trained classical pianist. Akane, the drummer, and MISA, the bassist also have a formal piano backgound. And in a recent concert, Saiki, the lead singer played a piano solo and sang. Not to be left behind though, Miku, the second singer, rhythm guitarist, main lyricist and band founder has a side project, Cluppo, and could probably do anything she wants to do. A very talented band.
And you want a video on Kanami's pedalboard you say? Here's a brand spanking new one - so new it may be different equipment. But yeah, I think that's a Mesa Boogie Triple rectifier. Here's your video: ruclips.net/video/yT8he3SyG_g/видео.htmlsi=-aH2MMXTtNgw9kf1
For vocal chops and overall madness music, I do very much recommend Gacharic Spin with Nanmaida (or anything really). If you like Band Maid you will *not* be disappointed :)
BAND-MAID 😎🤘

Steve- there are many collage videos made by a gentleman who is known as 'P in D'. You ought to try to look them up.
Miku was running at least one b-track in Manners. All the ladies will sing now and again. Miku will run a parallel channel and 1- 2 layers with an intelligent harmonizer and Saiki also has used at least a dual channel and harmonizer as needed to thicken the vocals live. Sounds a lot cleaner than b-tracks esp with the automation and new gear that's out now. Where was this stuff 30 years ago when I needed it?
Black hole : Speed tempo more 200 bpm.
Lead uses EVH amp
Kanami here uses MESA Boogie Triple Rectifier. Last year she switched to Bogner Ecstasy “PANDORA”.
At the end of July 2023 Kanami wrote:
And I'm sure some of you may have noticed a change in my recent OKYUJI? !
………that's right! I changed the head amp! ! !
It changed to Bogner Ecstasy “PANDORA”
Wow! ! I changed the amp for the first time in a few years!
Bogner has always been my favorite manufacturer,
I was thinking that someday... but I put all my energy into making a new one for the Yokohama Arena! !
The current situation is still in the trial and error stage, but I would like to pursue the sound of BAND-MAID with Tech Daichan⭐
Miku is using EVH-5150:
29. What Amplifier and effector do you use?
For the amp I use EVH-5150 (White), for effector I use Line 6 helix now. In the effector I use the EVH amp settings and drop function.
Bravo on deducing the Covid concert setup. These are my least favorite live videos and I mostly skip them in favor of the studio versions.
Otherwise I enjoy live videos more than the music videos. I feel like the ladies are always trying to be at their very best for the crowd and have an extra oomph to everything they do.
Yeah, those ONLINE OKYUJIs sound more like studio versions, actually. No crowd, nobody to interact with, so, the Maids just play in a self-absorbed fashion, as they would do in a studio session.
Actually, I often listen to those ONLINE OKYUJIs as an audio-only. I chopped those streams into separate songs, and then extracted audio as FLAC files from them. Those are very good performances, they played all songs from Unseen World, which is amazing. And no distracting shouts from the audience, so, it sounds very clean and nice.
Kanami is a riff master
Do not listen to the studio performances of anybody Japanese. Seriously. In fact, do a test of this. Try the studio version of Domination, then listen to the official live version of it. And, this will be typical.
Hmmm... A bit radical approach 😂
In fact, I love the studio version of DOMINATION a little more than the live one, just because I can hear Akane's bass drum better. She's doing fascinating stuff with her feet there.
