    Those lookdowns are actually great to eat. You'd think that there isn't much to them buy you would be surprised.

      We target them with crappie jigs, sometimes tipped with a very small piece of shrimp. They really are quite tasty and easy to catch.

    john, when you started getting spooled on the 50w you couldve gone back to free spool, and turned the pre set drag up, which is the knurled knob. The reason it was taking so much drag is probably because the preset was set to light, which is that knurled knob. You may not adjust that knob, unless the lever is backed all the way off to free spool. You’d have to palm the spool, while the fish was running, pull lever back to free, turn clockwise on the preset drag knob, and then turn lever back up the strike position to achieve maximum drag. This is generally with any lever drag, big or small.

      Thanks. I had a feeling that second knob wasn't set right, but the others were insisting it was.

    John, you always have the best videos! I still remember when I lived in CT and ordering your book. You taught me how to REALLY fish for flounder. I live in Charleston now and love how you do videos in FL.

    Glove thumb the spool, back the drag to freespool, tighten the drag, bump the lever back to past strike .

    When there’s so many sharks you just have to move to a different spot.

    Fought a jumbo sized yellowfin last august on a Jersey party boat and one mate had me put the rod on his shoulder while the other was hand pulling in line like you were doing. Got the tuna to within 10 feet of the boat and it busted the leader (we guessed it had swallowed the hook and eventually the teeth got to the 80 lb. fluorocarbon). That technique did seem to work since I was at a stalemate with the fish for 10 minutes before they did that.

    Ha John - structure fishing was fun and enjoyable to watch. Never heard you grunt and groan so much trying to hoist those big ones. Kind of like Pee Wee Herman in a boxing match with Sonny Liston!

    Awesome trip John, bad weather coming? 600 HP. at the stern should get you in!, I caught some tile fish in Boynton beach that looked like my son's fish in his saltwater tank, Here in Ct. L.I. sound, my buddy had a Pennyann 26' he kept at the Niantic Boat Valet, call 30 mins. before arrival and your boat was tied to the dock ready to go, come back in and they wash it down and put it in the rack!

    Hey John I'm getting my first kayak to fish for stripers in raitan bay. Can you give me a good fish finder option

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 месяца назад +1

      That's an easy one - Humminbird Helix 7. You could also get away with the 5-inch. I've had these on my kayaks for a lot of years and they've never failed me. amzn.to/3IMmEYl.

    What are those inshore croaking fish called?

  • @mbartolacc
    @mbartolacc 3 месяца назад +1

    Lookdown master, now you need to write about them and filefish, another skinny bait stealer :-)

  • @Redcrown48
    @Redcrown48 3 месяца назад

    You do better inshore, sharks and trying to budge big tires off the bottom don't look like fun. Besides fishing with John H it's a learning experience, beats fishing in kayak talking to the fish. I watched a video by Key West Waterman a diver and the barnacles growing on those mangrove roots are huge, I can see the need for a heavy leader.

    Love your channel, but this video left me angry. I wanted to see at least one of those monsters get in the boat. 🎣 💥🤬💔💯
