    I just purchased one, used for £700. It’s one of the sharpest zoom lenses I’ve ever owned.

    Don't forget that at full zoom, this 600mm monster effectively becomes a 900mm lens when coupled to an apsc sensor camera. As with any lens, it has its limitations, but it's nothing method and technique can't overcome. I have this lense and for the price, it is difficult to beat indeed.
    Excellent video thank you.

    Great and honest review. I have had it for a couple years and your comments were very accurate. Main thing is it produces sharp images. All other issues I can deal with. You can't fix a soft lens.

    I know this video is a few years old, but I have this lens and use it with great success on my Cannon R5. Duade Paton has some settings that help a lot with some slight focus pulsing that can occur when shooting especially close subjects. I actually do keep my lens in the nice case when I'm not using it. It's a really nice case so why not?

    If weight is an issue then the Sigma 600-600mm really makes sense. But where the 60-600mm lens really shines is that it's one the few camera lenses that is "Parfocal" meaning it retains perfect focus at all zooms levels. A necessity for shooting high-end video. The Sigma 150-600mm sport is NOT PARFOCAL so if you shoot video this is not the sense for you. All Cine Lenses are par focal but Cinema lenses are quite expensive for this reason. Understand that more than 90% of the photography lenses by Canon, Nikon and yes Sony are not parfocal because the cost to make it that way. Some lens come close to being parfocal but be careful because if you are not paying attention you can get burnered by that almost perfect focus. For critical work keep it parfocal. Also even if you are not much of a videographer having the focus still perfect even though you have zoomed in and out is a boon for nature photographers.

    Nice and short summary, without unnecessary information. I like. I just don't completely agree with the sealing part. Sigma, and not only them, are careful with their language, for sure. But not because they seek to mislead the customer, but quite the opposite. It's just that the seal is there and it is specified that it is only about the back. Sigma (and not only them) are a company that would not allow itself to deliberately mislead customers. In short, there is no other seal than the bayonet area, and nowhere do they claim otherwise. Maybe some people would like this lens to have a sealing class like the sports version, but for this weight and price, there is no way.

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  4 года назад

      Low light is challenging, especially at the long end. Once the sun is up, you should have enough light in most situations. I would stay away from a teleconverter though. It will take away another stop of light, and when you work in the crop factor, you have almost 900mm of reach compared to full frame at the long end.

    Hi, I have the exact same camera a nikon D3400 with the nikkor 70-300mm but I am planning to change the lens. I would love to hear from you on how does the camera perform with the sigma 150-600mm lens specifically. I have my doubts on whether I'd be able to get nice blurry backgrounds while shooting in 600mm. Which memory card do you use?just to know if it processes photos fast after for example shooting a burst.
    Thank you very much
    Cheers

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  4 года назад

      The Sigma 15-600 matches nicely to the D3400. And even though it does have a bit smaller maximum aperture, the longer focal length does allow you to get nice blurry backgrounds, as long as there is some separation from your subject. It won't be as smooth as an f4, but still pretty good.
      The second question doesn't really have anything to do with the lens. Personally in the D3400 I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 / U3 (amzn.to/3rZNC5j) and it works nicely. But whatever card you're using now will perform exactly the same regardless of the lens. Hope this helps.

    How is it all the way out at 600mm in terms of sharpness? I have the Nikkor 80-400 VR(the old one with the slow AF auto focus) and it's pretty difficult to get anything sharp with it out at the far end. Looking for something to extend range and sharpness at range and have had my eye on this lens for awhile for wildlife/birds.

    • @SouthernExposure

      I can't make a direct comparison, as I haven't used the 80-400. I can say that most of my shots with this lens are at or near 600mm. TeKnoVKNG23 Hey! Nice to see someone else also using the old 80-400. I use mine with a Nikon D90 and I’m also desperate for an upgrade. Let me know how you like it!
      On a side note, I’ve invested in this noise removal (with basic sharpening) software called Denoise AI, and it’s been a game changer, especially with my mentioned outdated setup.

    • @Car-crazy
      @Car-crazy 4 года назад

      Most lenses suffer at the far end. Usually if if you step down just a bit for example 280mm rather than at 300 you should find the images will become sharper. Also what F number are using the lens at. My Nikkor 70-300 is crystal clear at any focal range at F8, which is the lens sweet spot. My 18-55 is also best at f8, but my 10-20mm lens is best at f11. Using spot, centre weighted or matrix will also affect how your camera focuses on objects and can cause out of focus shots. If you haven't tried it yet take some photos of something with the lens set at around 370mm on your lens and try different f stops. Also the further away something is from the lens the harder it will be for the lens to capture the image clearly, especially variable aperature lenses. All lenses no matter how good they are will have there limit. Hope this helps.

    Oct 2022 - Yours is probably the clearest I feel most honest review of this SIGMA lens. Thank you! I also have a Nikon D3400. I was happy to hear that you paired the lens with that camera body. My only hesitation for purchase is when you said the lens sometimes hunts for focus. It also has slight chromatic aberration. So is that a dealbreaker or you still recommend the lens for the camera body Nikon D3400 that I have?

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  2 года назад +1

    • @Bippy55
      @Bippy55 2 года назад

      @@SouthernExposure Okay! I think I am going to go for it!! Did you get a UV filter for it? What is the diameter? I learned with SIGMA lenses it is best to go with a better grade UV filter. Or else sharpness is degraded somewhat.

    I Want to use this lens with either my Canon 6D or my Canon M 50. I’m going on a safari in Nairobi in February and I would like to take the M 50 instead of the 6D. Which would you recommend?

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  5 лет назад +1

      Personally, I would probably go with the 6D. The crop sensor on the M50 will give you more reach, but the full frame 6D will be an advantage with low light. Also, the M50 would require an adapter, right? That may affect AF performance. Either way, enjoy the trip!

      6D is probably the best camera for this lens. Check out the review of Christopher Frost Photography. EF-M to EF adapter would not effect the AF. A speed booster won't work since this is not a Canon lens. This lens performs worse on aps-c. So i'd take the 6D with you and put a 24-70 equivalent on the M50 for when animals get close.

    Hi! I have a Canon 77D (aps-c). I'm needing sharp tele lens for wildlife photography. I'm thinking Sigma 150-600 C or 60-600. 60-600 is about twice as expensive than 150-600C.
    What you recommend? :)

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  4 года назад +1

      If you have a lens that covers the "standard - telephoto" range already, I would say go for the 150-600. In fact, in most cases I would recommend pairing the 150-600 with a 70-200, which is what I do. That meant I had to wait an extra year to save up the money, but it was worth it.

  • @SceneSprout
    @SceneSprout 5 лет назад +1

    I've been eyeing that lens for a while. I bought the Nikkor 55-200mm DX lens and the range added over the 18-55 kit lens didn't feel like 200mm lol. I still found birds just 30 yards away still very small. Cropping helps but not enough to make up the differance. 900$ is still a bit out of my range ATM. It also comes down to. Do I want to invest in more glass? Or save up for a mirrorless? My d7200 is amazing though and I have no reason to replace it so here I sit, fighting G.A.S lol Not to mention wanting to upgrade my video equipment too lol. Great review! Always good to have a review that isnt TOO full of lfuff. Good balance of fact vs real world application!

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks Chris! I'm finding with the telephoto lenses that no matter how much reach you have, you always end up wanting just a little bit more! I started with the 70-300 mm (DX kit version) on the D3400 and used that for quite a while before saving up for this lens. It is important to think about your future path before a purchase though. For me, I knew I wanted to eventually go full-frame, and would most likely stick with Nikon. Since this lens is designed as a FX (although it works great on DX as well), it was a perfect match for me.

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  4 года назад +1

      I can't compare those 2 lenses directly, but here are some general thoughts. Lenses from the major manufacturers are generally a little sharper than the third party offerings, like Sigma and Tamron. But the difference is getting hard to see.
      As far as cropping, unless you have a really high megapixel camera, getting the shot as close as possible in camera is always preferably to cropping in post. Hope this helps!

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  5 лет назад

      The version with the Canon mount should work well with that camera. The crop factor of the APS-C sized sensor will make this lens the equivalent of about 225-900mm which is great for wildlife. As for calibration, each lens/camera combo is different. Take some photos at varying focal lengths and examine them to determine if it is focusing where you expect and decide from there.

    Hey fella I'm thinking of buying is lens for astrophotography on a z6 your thoughts

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  5 лет назад

      It works great for photographing the moon. However, for true astrophotography the relatively small maximum aperture (f/5-6.3) could be a problem. You might be able to overcome this with a high quality star tracker for longer exposures, but that's beyond my experience level. If you're just getting started in astro, a good place to begin is with photos of the Milky Way galactic core. I was able to get some nice results using the Z6 and the 24-70mm f/4 kit lens. I have a video on that here: ruclips.net/video/ueqk2sdqrYk/видео.html

    • @SouthernExposure
      @SouthernExposure  4 года назад +1

      Thank you!
      As for your question, that's a tough one. There is the Sigma Sport version of this lens, which has better weather sealing and is reportedly a little sharper, but I don't think I would make that jump. I guess it would depend on what aspect of the lens you wanted to improve on. If you want to keep the reach of the 600mm, but improve sharpness and light gathering, you're looking at a 600mm f4 and that comes at a hefty price. If you want better sharpness, about the same light gathering, and better weather sealing there is the Nikon 500mm f5.6 PF. And if you really want to work in low light but the reach isn't that important, you could go to a 400mm f2.8, but again it's quite spendy. Hope this helps.

    • @SouthernExposure
