Thanks for clarifying that you can replace the sticks with nunchuck sticks and NOT to use normal Gamecube sticks as replacements. You even went out of your way to confirm that the same shoulder plugs work in these things as well. I was pretty sure that these things would go by undiscussed but I guess I underestimated how thorough you'd be. Thanks for helping tons of would-be buyers. I had to figure all these things out for myself when I got originally got one of these a couple years back. I love my nunchuck-sticked Battle Beaver-plugged Hori Pad Cube and I hope others will too!
Hori is much closer to a 2nd -Party peripherals manufacturer than a 3rd-Party, IMO. They've been making controllers and peripherals for Nintendo since the original Famicom, and the plastics used in many of these devices have been noted to be eerily similar to the plastics used by Nintendo themselves in their official products - suggesting that the two may share manufacturing on occasion.
"He's the only other person I know that plays with this controller and plays pretty damn well with it." Make that two players. I don't play Melee currently but I compete in Project M at my local scene and have actually beaten a few of the top ten players here, believe it or not.
zenith SSBM Frankly I love It, it also helps me because I have really big hands. It does make me laugh though when everyone in my community asks: how the hell can you play with this thing?
Just got mine a couple days ago for Ultimate and it definitely feels better for my larger hands! Thanks for breakdown! Now I just gotta get use to the new finger placement
These Hori controllers are pretty solid overall. I have two of them. They were used but in good condition when I got them. The sticks are almost as good as the normal controllers, but yeah dashback has been an issue on mine. Nintendo actually uses Hori's stick technology for the Gamecube controllers, not vice versa. The z buttons are clicky vs the normal "soft" z buttons. I like the way the triggers are curved as they're more pointed. They also stick out a lot, but at the time I didn't mind it. The rumble on these are generally louder and more intense than normal controllers. The stick caps are also taller than the normal controllers, so if you want to change them you can use a normal cap and put a little piece of tape in the hole (I use blue masking tape), otherwise they will be too low and the soft under part of the normal stick will rub against the gate (feels bad and your cap will wear down more). The same thing can be done with the C sticks. I switched back to standard controllers because I can get better sticks, easily replacable PCBs and parts, I can borrow controllers if something happens and wouldn't need to "convert" or adapt nearly as much, and - most importantly - because the buttons on standard controllers are closer together it makes certain inputs/tech much easier and stresses my hands less overall.
One specific GameCube controller I remember seeing at Blockbuster Video back in 2004, was a SpongeBob themed controller, which I think was made to promote "The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie" when it was out in theaters.
Thanks so much for your video. I broke one of these down over a year ago, and tonight I was prompted to reassemble it. Couldn't figure out the internal screws. Your video saved me from a night.of frustration. Good man.
Idk why I even watch these kinds of videos anymore. I play on a box lol. I still love the videos though, maybe I'll pick up a hori as a lender controller for when my friends forget theirs
Finally. I brought one of these to a local and was made fun of for using this controller even though I had no issues with using it. Personally I think it fits my hands better. The official one seems just too small for me personally and the wider grips make it more like an Xbox one controller which I find to be comfortable.
Have you tried Javi grip on this? I tried it out and I actually think it's better than javi grip on the stock GC controller. My left hand can get both the Z & R buttons while my right hand can get all the face buttons on top.
ive heard that the bug that allows you to select giga bowser uses the second z button (and button presses at insane speeds) so normal gamecube controllers cannot do that. i think m2k was thinking of cheeseing vs ice climbers with giga boweser, but turbo buttons are banned. maybe with some weird turn of events these will be more saught after soon.
You can use a Wii u stick as a replacement. It's domed design feels great on this controller and is very grippy. It also maintans the larger stick size of the origiginal controller.
Hori Had some newer releases here in the USA for gamecube. But the only thing is they are USB not Gamecube ports. other than that it works perfectly, doesnt feel cheap, and if used on any other Nintendo switch games it will be read as a Pro Controller so it can be used for pretty much all games that allow Pro Controllers.
Man u nailed that hard! Pretty impressive content :) I bought 2 Gamecubes (both black) that had no cords or controllers or games. I slept on the Gamecube growing up so thats why I bought them. I got cords sorted but no controllers or games yet so I might get a Hori one if need be. The cheap $10 ones on GEEK look a bit suss so I'll steer clear of them.
I use one of these for smash 64, with a raphnet adapter. Great for larger hands! I just had mine apart last night to replace the original stick box after year of hard DI. Best controller I've ever used.
Crazy how RUclips recommended your video to me when I was looking for third party gamecube controllers last night. I have a real Nintendo licensed gamecube controller but I want a third party one for player 2. Not trying to buy something that won't last but something that's good quality, and won't make them feel like, oh I'm player 2 of course I'd get the bad controller
its fate lmao but fr if youre getting a "player 2" controller, I would go with either this or buying an official controller used on ebay. They feel infinitely better and honestly cheap controllers break so often you might save money just getting one official one as opposed to replacing cheap ones over and over
Sometimes, you actually get a good madcatz. I had one for 10 years before it broke. It actually worked well for small smash tourneys. I was only in like, 2, but it worked.
I have 4 of these things and abosutley love em. Wish i had the melee skill to justify having so many but they blow the regular GCN controller out of the water in every other game.
I think I'm gonna buy this controller to emulate my Xbox controller. Although it probably still lacks the analog click buttons (reply with correction if I'm wrong plz) I love the double Z button setup. It's beautiful
Ugh. Just gotta get this out there: the Official Gamecube controller was never manufactured by Nintendo, it was Hori. The official controller IS "third party". Edit: for the record, these Hori's are way better (in my opinion)
Question: did Mike Haze set a date when he was going to sell the GameCube controllers, I'm very interested of buying a first-party GameCube controller myself because I have mostly third party controllers. PS I really want to get into competitive melee.
Great video Zenith! Have you seen those new PowerA controllers for the Nintendo Switch (3rd party)? An image of them got leaked not too long ago. Do you think they'll be any good?
zenith SSBM also, do a video breakdown of it with a teardown too, loads of people are always interested in mine, plus if its the same one I was gonna buy id love to see the condition, it looked nice
You should review and take apart Hori's gamecube controller for the switch when they come out next month. They look promising so far, I'm curious how you will think of them.
Can you go over controllers for switch with smash for switch coming out? things like input delay and other controller issues, I kinda like how the switch pro controller feels wired but I obviously won't use it if it adds input delay, etc.
I can't find these controllers anywhere i can only find the switch one or the one that looks like a snes controller. Is there a certain name i can search?

zenith SSBM yeah both of them are real from what I can tell a black one and a purple one. I opened the black one and cleaned it and it feels nice but the z button feels soft...it makes a soft click...is it supposed to be that way or I put it wrong?
Infact both I cleaned all the buttons, shell and sticks and after cleaing both the z button dosent feel stiff. Also both were real from what I saw from the board and also the purple one has the analog stick very lose..like shale the controller a little and it moves. Anyway I could fix this?
hmm ok so the z buttons seem normal just because they do vary a lot on how much they click from controller to controller. loose sticks can be a problem though if you dont like them loose. Is the control stick box interchangeable with a regular gamecube controller if i where to find one of these and take it off the motherboard? i have a really old gamecube controller that has idle stick drift that i'd like to fix by replacing the control modules rather than just buying another controller and hoping that the new one is fine
unfortunately no, the stick on the Hori is too tall and will not fit in a standard gcc shell. the sticks I did a review on in my last video are pretty decent alternatives though! Esp for the price
Rayleron Bowl it feels a bit heavier and more clicky. But you can change out the springs with normal GC controller ones. Also, I think that there is a little bit more of travel distance.
Honestly, the mad catz gamecube controllers function pretty well, they just feel weird in your hands and are a little smaller compared to 1st party. The knockoff lookalikes however are absolute complete shit.

Hori also produced the LodgeNet GameCube controllers. How's that for some obscure trivia?
What controller!?!?! I just see floating buttons.
i feel clickbaited
Yeah those are some spooky floating buttons
I can kinda see some text
Yeah it's scaring me
Getting ready to r/wooosh someone

congrats! how are you liking your Hori?
zenith SSBM Frankly I love It, it also helps me because I have really big hands. It does make me laugh though when everyone in my community asks: how the hell can you play with this thing?
THANK YOU! we need more videos on controllers because they are so dawm rare and expensive nowadays
This third-party controller isn't so HORI-ble after all.

Just got mine a couple days ago for Ultimate and it definitely feels better for my larger hands! Thanks for breakdown! Now I just gotta get use to the new finger placement
excellent content as usual!
I love the original gamecube design but im really liking the two z buttons and that slightly bigger B button looks great! It probably feels nice.
These Hori controllers are pretty solid overall. I have two of them. They were used but in good condition when I got them. syst3m08 they works on USA consoles or adapters ?
One specific GameCube controller I remember seeing at Blockbuster Video back in 2004, was a SpongeBob themed controller, which I think was made to promote "The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie" when it was out in theaters.
I don't even own a gamecube controller. But I still watch a lot of these vids.
I just got mine and I'm really liking this controller and thank you for showing me this product. Would definitely buy another one.
It has SnapBack tho
@@BashslashSlayerTv so do regular game cube controllers. I just prefer how it feels in my hand and I mainly been using it for Ultimate.
Hori did the famous n64 controller.
Thanks so much for your video. I broke one of these down over a year ago, and tonight I was prompted to reassemble it. Couldn't figure out the internal screws. Your video saved me from a night.of frustration. Good man.
my man didn't even mention hori for their fightsticks. smh
ive got 2 of their fightsticks
Right they're like #1 in the fightsick game right now and he ain't bring that up lol
Nigga, nintendo manboys are casuals; what do you expect?
S. V. Hehe
very well put together video once again! Truly love and admire all of your content!
thanks man, means a lot to hear that!
If I remember right, The Hori pad is also what led to the design of the gamecube controller.
Something a lot of people dont know is that the n64 hori controller actually inspired the official nintendo gamecube controller
Great video man. I’ve been eyeing these for awhile, but wasn’t sure how good they would be. Should’ve known better than to doubt Hori.
Love your vids man, good luck with everything you are planning to do
Idk why I even watch these kinds of videos anymore. I play on a box lol. I still love the videos though, maybe I'll pick up a hori as a lender controller for when my friends forget theirs
ohhh what kind of box controller? and thanks!
smashbox :)

yee dont listen to the haters, just grab them twice as much with your 2 z buttons
Have you tried Javi grip on this? I tried it out and I actually think it's better than javi grip on the stock GC controller. My left hand can get both the Z & R buttons while my right hand can get all the face buttons on top.
When I was a kid my GameCube controller broke so I bought the GameStop GC controller I ended up buying another one and they work to this day.
ive heard that the bug that allows you to select giga bowser uses the second z button (and button presses at insane speeds) so normal gamecube controllers cannot do that. i think m2k was thinking of cheeseing vs ice climbers with giga boweser, but turbo buttons are banned. maybe with some weird turn of events these will be more saught after soon.
There is also a GameCube arcade stick on Amazon and eBay.
You can use a Wii u stick as a replacement. It's domed design feels great on this controller and is very grippy. It also maintans the larger stick size of the origiginal controller.
wii u sticks unfortunately are too short by default on the Hori
I had a madcatz GameCube controller that was small. I loved it.
Here's a fun fact: Nintendo and Hori had established their relationship since the 90s with the release of the.... Super Gameboy.
Hori products are usually good. Their fightsticks are my sticks of choice since they're good and affordable.
you can almost always trust Hori!
The cheap $10 ones on GEEK look a bit suss so I'll steer clear of them.
thanks friend! and yes unless its this one I would stray away from all third party gamecube controllers
Thank you for making this video. I'm interested in trying one of these out.
I use one of these for smash 64, with a raphnet adapter. Great for larger hands! I just had mine apart last night to replace the original stick box after year of hard DI. Best controller I've ever used.
**The Horipad for the N64 is actually called the Horipad Mini.
Crazy how RUclips recommended your video to me when I was looking for third party gamecube controllers last night. I have a bunch of these and love how they feel so I kept collecting them lol
I have 4 of these things and abosutley love em. Wish i had the melee skill to justify having so many but they blow the regular GCN controller out of the water in every other game.
Hori is generally a good company. It's officially licensed to create controllers for Nintendo, Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Uhh just so people know the trigger braces dont work with stock gamecube controllers. Maybe I did it wrong, but they seemed to big to work.
the green in the camo showing through the greenscreen ha ha
Damn, the prices for these seem to have skyrocketed since this video :/
I think I'm gonna buy this controller to emulate my Xbox controller. Although it probably still lacks the analog click buttons (reply with correction if I'm wrong plz) I love the double Z button setup. It's beautiful
Finally an actual good 3rd party GameCube controller 😀
Ugh. Just gotta get this out there: the Official Gamecube controller was never manufactured by Nintendo, it was Hori. The official controller IS "third party".

HORI is MITSUMI?
Source???

Great video Zenith! Have you seen those new PowerA controllers for the Nintendo Switch (3rd party)? An image of them got leaked not too long ago. Do you think they'll be any good?
Christmas came early boys
The small madcats controllers were awesome.
zenith SSBM also, do a video breakdown of it with a teardown too, loads of people are always interested in mine, plus if its the same one I was gonna buy id love to see the condition, it looked nice
Solid break down!
That big b button looks nice to me and not because i have big hands or anything. It just looks like it would be good
You should review and take apart Hori's gamecube controller for the switch when they come out next month. They look promising so far, I'm curious how you will think of them.
I look at it at Evo! looks cool, hopefully I will get a chance to really review it soon!
The audio on this video is pretty bad, but could be improved a fair amount by just noise normalizing it. (I can't remember the proper term)
There's the HORI Battle Pad which I don't know about but might be as good or better than this one and it's more common
Low-key want to try this
And it works for switch as well? Planning on using one possible for smash when that comes out (im guessing not)
Can you go over controllers for switch with smash for switch coming out? things like input delay and other controller issues, I kinda like how the switch pro controller feels wired but I obviously won't use it if it adds input delay, etc.
I would LOVE to find a good Gamecube 3rd party controller with standard SNES style buttons.
same dude, same
I can't find these controllers anywhere i can only find the switch one or the one that looks like a snes controller. Is there a certain name i can search?
First!
3rd party GC controller that's good
lol you got me
zenith SSBM yeah, lol
What other thumbstick replacement options do I have besides the wii, does ps3, ps4 or 360, X1 thumb sticks work too?
The Z button being on the left side seems smarter anyways
I like hori controller, because they make good stuff for nintendo
This is similar to me going from the GameCube controller running sm64 on virtual console to a n64 controller
Lmao I just ordered that shirt pretty sick
CraftyLaurence where is that shirt from?
www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Weekly-Shonen-Jump-x-Uniqlo-UT-Yu-Gi-Oh-Mens-GRAPHIC-T-SHIRT-White-JAPAN/253646406995?hash=item3b0e810553:m:mQhQNFfTT5zPdBngmgMvYpw this is where i got mine

My six Nintendo joypads still work my two 3rd party ones randomly stopped working.
so is the new hori controller for switch equally as good as this?
Is there a place to get parts for these? I received a red one in a lot of controllers a year or so back but the z buttons were broke at the hinge.
zenith SSBM Will you do a video covering the Mario and Luigi Hori GC controllers talking about its viability and if it is possible to mod with replaceable sticks and buttons?
The ones for WiiU?
zenith SSBM yes
whered u get that t shirt? its so dope
What is the triwing screwdriver size for the nintendo gamecube controller?
It uses type 3!? Yes! :D
are the nintendo switch hori gamecube controllers with the usb wire good for netplay melee?
That d pad is in an orginal game boy.
can you upload a minute or two match with a handcam of the controller? it looks sick
I have the whole file of my friend in the video playing, I just cut out a little portion. If I didnt delete it ill post it and dm you the link. If not Ill try to play some matches with it lol
zenith SSBM sall good dude, thanks though!
wherrd u get your shirt!????
suzbee uniqlo x shounen jump collection. Not sure if it’s still going on but they have a bunch of the shirts
The toilet store?!
do those z buttons count as different buttons or are they both z? even when connecting to pc
I don't know about PC, but when I got mine a couple weeks ago, they both act as Z. It just allows you to use the Z button on whatever side you feel is most comfortable.
could you see if it works as different buttons on pc? (if you have an adapter) could be useful for me and a friend
I sadly don't have an adapter nor play games on PC, so I wouldn't be able to tell you, but on PC both would most likely be the same button. When I was testing this controller on my Wii for GameCube games, one of the games I used was a racing game (R: Racing Evolution) where the Z button lets you view what's behind you, holding both Z buttons and letting one go would still result in me being able to view what's behind me.
hmm alright then
They both count as Z
hey zenith a got a question that sorta relates to this and is something Im honestly confused on....the z button on a normal gamecube controller is it supposed to be stiff? mushy? like I found a bunch for sale at a garage sale and one has a stiff button that makes a click noise when pressed and the others is mushy....how is a z button supposed to feel on a gamecube controller? (sorry for not asking on twitter I dont have a account)
certain z-buttons on nintendo gcc are more "clicky" than others but not to the point where its stiff. are you sure theyre both genuine? and no problem lol i only mention twitter since the comments dont get flooded out
zenith SSBM yeah both of them are real from what I can tell a black one and a purple one.

I am no expert (yet lol) on fixing up sticks but people like Kadano or other modders probably have a lot of information on the subject online!
Due to me holding most controllers with my left index finger on the z/bumper and middle finger for the trigger
Best “NEW” current n64 controller?
that hori gamepad for n64 can be found for "like-new" and if you dont mind shelling a little more $$$ is absolutely the best bet
is the control stick the same quality as the original?
Hard to say since mine was worn out but probably good, just not the same or as durable compared to a real one
I have 2 one with two c sticks. Play smash 64 and smash 4 on it. Won lots of tournaments with them too.
Outro song name?
Let's go RU
I wonder what the chances are that hori rereleases these controllers seeing as smash is now a fully fledged esport and a new game is coming out?
Given they didn't do that when Brawl or Smash 4 came out, not likely. Though they did make controllers specifically for Smash for Smash 4 (those HORI Battle Pads), and they used the design of their HORI Pad Cube to make a Classic Controller for the Wii.

I wouldn't put past Hori to make a good third party controller.
Good a gamecube controller I can slice in half and turn into joycons without fear of nintendo stopping me from reproducing it
I gotta get some of this controller
Hey zenith, how do the L and R buttons feel compared to the official gamecube controller?
pretty similar, just smaller in surface area and flatter on the top. still solid though
zenith SSBM do they have the same sort of press feeling?
Rayleron Bowl it feels a bit heavier and more clicky. But you can change out the springs with normal GC controller ones. Also, I think that there is a little bit more of travel distance.
Three different microphones?
Where can I find one of these controllers? They look awesome
ebay!
Honestly, the mad catz gamecube controllers function pretty well, they just feel weird in your hands and are a little smaller compared to 1st party. The knockoff lookalikes however are absolute complete shit.
What is this controller called?
Name specification number ?!?!?
Your shirt is littttt
Can anyone tell me if there's a way to solder a capacitor on this controller to reduce the snapback
Would there be any disadvantage to using a Nunchuck control stick in an actual GameCube controller?
its a little taller than a regular gamecube control stick so it will take some getting used to. i havent had a chance to measure out if it is thinner than a regular control stick of if it makes any difference but I will get back to you!
I use a nunchuck stick in my gc controller
