Honestly, the Wii's line-up of controllers is quite versatile; there really is something for everyone here! I'd be interested in seeing you cover some of the wackier peripherals at some point.

I knew from having one, but never had the luxury of owning one as a kid. But I did have the GameCube controller for the few games that supported it
There's a lot to love about the Wii, and the wide selection of controllers is a big one for me.
I love that so many Wii games use the Cube's controller, even the Resident Evil Archives rereleases will let you hook up the GC controller and have the exact control scheme of the original releases. And I love being able to go back to a game like Sonic Unleashed, which I originally played largely with a GC controller, and try it out with a Classic Controller Pro for a new way to experience it. Also, the surreal experience of playing former PS2 exclusive Phantom Brave with a GameCube controller makes me feel like I'm in an alternate dimension xD

The biggest tragedy to me is Okami on Wii.
Despite it being a port of a PS2 game, it has no option at all for GameCube or Classic Controller, and requires a motion swing for standard attacks in combat, which makes some weapons borderline unusable late into the game
The Wii is one of my favorite system! I get that some people have problems with the controllers (and some people literally can't use them because of motion), but I have always liked them. Wii Motion Plus makes them even better too!
Also, I'm totally there with you on GameCube ports, I didn't know they were there for a long time. I grew up on the Wii, not the GameCube, so even though I think I may have found the controller ports, I never knew what they were for until years later. Also, I never found the memory card ports myself till learning of the GameCube support. Somehow, I still have both flaps on the top of the console, even all these years later!

I actually really like the overall design of the Wii Remote itself. It's very intuitive for standard pointing play, with the pause buttons in the middle, but it also works very well as a standard controller when sideways, having the standard button layout for most platformers and allowing for motion controls for games like Mario Kart Wii.
The best use of the Wii Remote Speaker is when selecting a character in Smash Brawl and hearing a cute little voice clip from the character or beeping from Mr. Game and Watch lol.

The flexibility and modularity of the Wiimote make it my favourite controller despite admittedly not being as comfortable to hold as modern controllers. Even besides the motion controls revolution, it single-handedly brought Light-gun shooters to the living room and kicked off a (sadly short-lived) revival. All its features made for creative options for developers to explore and turn into memorable experiences. To this day, I have it ingrained as an instinct to steer and shake the controller in Mario Kart because it simply felt so intuitive!
I don't care what everyone says, the Wiimote + Nunchuck combo is one of the most comfortable controllers ever. Just being able to move them both independently to fit your sitting position while still remaining intuitive sets them above most others.
If you think the speaker is a lesser used feature on the Wiiremote wait until I tell you that the wiiremote also has internal storage so you can save your Miis on it and take them to a friend's Wii. Some games like Super Smash Bros Brawl and Pokemon Rumble also used Wiiremote's internal storage

Wii is indeed a weird console and it’s controllers were bizarre too, due to it gimmick of making games motion controls. This console still brought so much joy and sold well against consoles like the PS3 and Xbox360.
People like to clown on the Wii motion+ a lot for being a marginal upgrade, but the wiimotes that came with it built in actually worked REALLY well. Like not as well as a joy con, let alone a VR controller, but still much better than an original wiimote with the Wii motion+ attachment.
Wii motion plus controllers actually work better than the joy cons since they have gyro and IR which let's the gyros automatically recalibrate. The joycons only have gyro and you have to manually recalibrate them a lot.
Wii remote is the best thing to happen to gaming along with the analog stick having a 3d mouse and motion in your hands is how games should be played in a 3d space and smoothly and currently using weapons in game should reflect reality I once had a wii hater say to me BU BU BUT YOU CAN SPRAY THE MACHINE GUN in cod wii REMOTE THats CHESTING I replied how is mm mouse aim not core fps ing and how do guns work in real life they don’t aim robotically and in janky un smooth motions like stupid analog stick aiming they move fluidly in 3d space if I walked in and sprayed you with a real machine gun I can spray around or take a sim at a target that’s how GUNS WORK it was always just projection of fanboys because console had out of date controls aiming with a stick like eating soup with a folk IS RETARDED gyro exists and hands apart gyro each hand because of the wii joycons controllers 3rd party joycons dual hand gyro pc controllers it’s all wii. A great example of wiis amazing forward thinking is pes wii football soccer. You control all 12 players on your team in real time in game you can analog fribble the ball mouse point dribble the ball button pass the ball mouse sim pass the ball move players not on the ball with the pointer mouse whilst controlling the player on the ball with the nunchuck I WAS DOING THAT IN 2006 ps5 today 2023 is still playing soccer the way it was on ps1 THAT IS RETARDED… fanboys and the industry has held gaming bs k 20 yrs WITH THIS SHIT… another example of this stupidity is the sudden 2022 23 yt explosion of ISBT GURO SIMING GREAT ISNT GYRO Great NIW DONY DO IT ….. it was great in 2006 wen Nintendo did it this is how retarddd this industry is Xbox still doesn’t even have 3d gyro in 2023 if I had a penny for every time iv rxplained these basic logical facts to people I’d be a billionaire I fully expect infact DEMAND IT that switch 2 enhances the gyro mouse pointer thing and further evolves the controller standards I want two comfortable joycons thst do all joycon and wii ability’s with 3d hepatic feed back and precision m perfect mouse any thing less is a fail.

The Wii controllers are such a strange case where it looks like it'd feel inferior to other controllers, but they're actually pretty comfortable for what they are.

I always assumed the classic controllers face buttons were lowercase so children using it wouldn't confuse button prompts with the wiimotes buttons

The WiiMote was pretty good and did a decent job from what I recall. One thing I didn't like though is when games made you swap between the upright and sideways modes frequently or semi-frequently, since I'm left handed it meant I either couldn't wear the wrist-strap or I had to awkwardly take it off one hand and put it on the other again each time (even only putting it on for upright and taking off for sideways was still annoying).

I love this video, it gives me so much nostalgia and kind of makes me wish there was a hdmi mod for the wii but i suppose i could just mod the wii u instead and turn off the strange blur effect it has but speaking on interesting controllers the Dragon Quest's Nintendo Switch Slime Controller doesn't look comfortable to use

What I still played on the Wii was Mario Kart Double Dash as it was a one of a kind I loved and I also didn't like how the Battle mode changed on Mario Kart Wii to balance online play.

Did you know that the white gamecube controller released in 2008 alongside the wii, but, they kept the gamecube logo, i woulda loved a wii logo on a gamecube controller
My biggest gripe with the wii classic controller is the wire at the bottom. You dont realize how annoying such a small thing can be until you start using the controller regularly.
if you observe your wii remote the A button is in all caps, B, C and Z
now its sub controllers, which is the pro/classic controllers
they are small caps to symbolize being a sub or an expansion atleast from what i noticed

10:23 I remember when having the Wii back in the day that I already knew that it was backwards compatible with GameCube because I saw when I was at like Best buy they were showing this demonstration thing on the TV screen right by where the Wii was going to be released, but not knowing how to get a GameCube controller to work on the Wii because yeah just like you did initially I didn't know where the GameCube controllers were supposed to go.
It wasn't until at some point while my family and I were on vacation in Tahoe and I brought the Wii with us that while I was just laying down in the hotel room my brother opened the door showed me the Wii opened the compartment door on the Wii to show the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots and he didn't say a word and then he closed the compartment and then close the door and came back out. We both hadn't realized where the ports were but he ended up finding them when I was just I don't remember what I was doing I think I might have been playing my DS or something but yeah since we hadn't realized how to get the GameCube controllers to work on it I didn't bring any GameCube games or controllers at the time but I made sure to bring them next time we went to Tahoe for sure

It's such a shame there are barely any modern Wii Classic Controller solutions. If only someone made BlueRetro Plug-and-Play adapters for Wii, Wii U, NES Classic and SNES Classic... Retro-Bit could possibly make a dual-analog Legacy16 controller that works for these four systems. Also, what if Retro Fighters releases a new version of the Defender for the same four systems? The possibilities are endless.

I’ve honestly come to loathe the Wii remote as time has passed, so it’s refreshing to hear love from it coming from you. It helps me see the positives much more clearly.
I just wish they did a better job accommodating for everyone. The only game I remember having left handed options was Wii Sports, and I know quite a few lefties who found games like Twilight Princess much more annoying on Wii. Hell, one of my friends growing up couldn’t even move their right hand at all. They did have the gamecube version, but the fact that there was a hurdle like that at all rubs me the wrong way; especially considering Nintendo’s whole shtick is appealing to everybody.

I absolutely love the Wii and Wii U and all the interesting controllers they have (yes, even the GamePad can be cool at times). There also exist official NES, SNES/Super Famicom, and GameCube controllers that plug into the Wii Remote, which provides an even better experience with many virtual console games.
Concerning your gripes with the lowercase buttons, I’ve always assumed the Classic Controller has lowercase buttons so people don’t get confused with the buttons on the Wii Remote. When a game tells you to press “a” it means “a” on the Classic Controller and not “A” on the Wii Remote. And yes, I know multiple people who still try to push A and B on the Wii Remote when using a Classic Controller, so it is somewhat of an issue for some people apparently

If you had Guitar Hero on the Wii you actually had to insert the Wiimote INTO the controller and if you had this you found out about the Wiimote mic very fast. If you missed a note it would play an out of tune sound from the Wiimote mic in the guitar controller and it was so damn loud. lol
I just got a Wii last night.
before I watch I'mma just say I want to play 1st person shooters, online and offline, as I did in the Wii days. It's the best. Thee Wii U could have produced such a game, but no luck. The Switch could have produced such a game, but again, it never haooened. Please give us the option to play shooting games, especially 1st person shooters, as we did in the Wii days, because it remains the best way to play a shooting game.

The Wii’s Gimmicky* Controls. It’s no doubt that while the Wii launched gaming into the mainstream with a TV remote like design, it never felt more intuitive than a standard controller but rather even less so.
