- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
Woodturning - Never Been Done Before !!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a blank made with coloured card and epoxy resin into an art piece. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

What could this piece be used for, other than an ornament? Go.....
How about a magazine holder? You could fit a good few copies of Catholic Monthly in there, no doubt. 🙏
Not sure about the subscription choice but great idea 💡
I'd use it as a curtain tie back - I have some really heavy door drapes, and this would be perfect to keep them hooked back. Gorgeous piece.
@@JackMackWoodturning Maybe some subscriptions to 3000 Abortions Daily or Pregnant Man magazine..?
@@jeremysepicrun if the proceeds of such publications went toward those adversely effected by said controversial issues.. I’d be more than happy to subscribe.
Unusual shape but, very striking. Love it
Thanks Dave. You think a different shape would be better?
@@JackMackWoodturning No, I'm all for unusual shapes
Yey, me too buddy. I’ve got more in this style to come but hopefully the next pieces will have function as well as form
@@JackMackWoodturning oh trust me, there’s definitely both function and form in this design already
@@JackMackWoodturning jj
Cool idea! I like how you put black paper in between all the colored paper, separates the colors so they’re easier to see.
Thanks joe. Yeah, contrast is everything in a piece like this
It's not paper. It's a kind of rubber
Em… it’s not a kind of rubber . What gives you that impression??? It’s paper/card.
@@JackMackWoodturning it looked like foamies to me but maybe it just looks odd on film? They look like very thick sheets
They are stacked up in sets of 7
I noticed when he did the original stacking of the colored sheets “black” was the first and last sheets but during turning “light blue” ended up on the inside. That was a good choice to scrap the first paper stack up. The light blue makes this piece POP!
Thanks matey I’m glad you agree.
I love watching these. Thanks for sharing. Your art😊
I literally just commented the same thing. Wow. Thought i was the only one.
And for my next trick, I’ll make it disappear!
As I was watching this video, my wife walked by and was captured for the last two or three minutes.
When she asked, "What is that?" I answered, "It's a finial for an antique hitching post."
She walked away with a low "Hmmmnnn..." before I could add the part about the Unicorns...
I guess it's just as well...
Keep doing what you love!
🤣🤣
I’ll have to try that.
Wow, how on earth do you come to this idea? I would never thought of this. The idea is so simple yet so beautiful is the product in the end. You have done it again Jack! Congratulations are in place!
Thanks harry. I’ve been thinking about trying this for years. Just had time to give it a go. Many more things in the same style to coMe 👍🏻
Pat yourself on the back much
Simply, he's creative.
woodturning was invented in 1300 B.C
Watching Nick Zimmetti
For some reason I’m drawn to the most unique turnings and this one is definitely in the top 5 of my favorites!
Thanks for sharing this gem with us!
My pleasure, I’m so incredibly intrigued as to what the other 4 videos are ?
Lovely use of the micarta technique.
I especially like the shape formed by folding the sheets back on themselves as the resin set, creating the void inside.
Thanks man. Are you a viking?
As a polymer clay artist I am all about COLOR! I love watching woodturning videos for the artistry of the shapes, but I long to see more play with color. I’m sure purists are more interested in seeing wood only - and maybe rightly so! But I dig your vision here of working color and shape together. Really lovely to look at, it keeps my eye looking for details!
Thanks buddy. I’d very much like to see your work. How can I do that?
I am essentially a purist when it comes to turning and love nothing more than a piece made from a single piece of wood. However these videos are my opportunity to do something different to the day job so I play around with absolutely any ideas that seem possible. Regardless of wether it falls into the box of “what most woodturners like” the stuff I make here is about process over final piece. That being said, this final piece will be staying in our house as I love it too 😉
@@CalebBerman I say this as a confirmed Episcopalian Christian: please do not reply to people just to advertise our religion. It's extremely rude. You are essentially going, "What you said here doesn't matter, this is more important." And yes, life after death is important, but you can do this in a better way. If you want to do this, make your own separate comment. Even so, I advise against that, because it's again sort of saying that what you're commenting on isn't important. You're changing the subject without any sort of nod to whatever you're commenting on/replying to. A RUclips video is not a public message board in the middle of a sidewalk.
Furthermore, _everyone and their mother knows what we're about and I'm frankly really sick and tired of hearing the same tired words over and over again._ At this point, not a single thing you could say online could convert someone to Christianity. And the way people tend to do so comes off as, in my opinion, "You're wrong, you're going to burn in Hell _unless_ you join my religion because my religion is the only right way to live." How would you like someone coming around and saying that to you? And from what I'm skimming, this is much the same.
Frankly, in my opinion, this kind of stuff makes us sound like a bunch of brainwashed fanatics. You're pushing more people away than you're bringing in.
The Internet needs no missionaries. People already know what's going on. They've already decided. Stop wasting your time and serve God by being kind to others, not essentially being spam mail.
Polymer clay? Like Fimo and Sculpy? That's fun to play with, I just wish it was stronger.
You must have been so excited with the finished result. It is a stunning piece of art work!
Thanks L. What’s the silver lining?
This channel makes me wanna buy a big ass house with a big ass shed to make some pretty stuff!
Soon. Verrrrrrrry soon.
Thank y'all for the inspiration!🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
Dang was this video was truly a "trust the process" moment. I was skeptical until you see the same and color wheb that gloss first hit, like wow
This is the most beautiful chess bishop I have ever seen.
That’s a cool idea… you think a chess set like this would be a nice build ?
@@JackMackWoodturning that is a grate idea
I sure think so
@@JackMackWoodturning It would be unique legendary chess set.
Jack he's right...I was thinking chess set too...it would be an amazing feat !...🌿🌿🌿
Jack, For those of us who remember the 1960's & 70's this is an object right out of our dreams! Fantastic!!!
Nice one RG. Something nice to gaze at on a magical trip I would imagine? 😵💫
Looks like it might be a trophy for an artistic wood turning competition. Very pretty!
I don’t know why, but watching videos of people doing skilled, artistic stuff like this makes my mouth water. Literally.🤤
🤣👍🏻😎

This is so beautiful, whatever that is! I have a fondness for bright colours, blue especially and this has all colours perfectly blended, I wish I could have it, really lovely!
It may well be for sale on my website soon.
Excellent creativity and execution, Jack. You really hit the sweet spot of great, pragmatic, ideas that you execute so well. Keep it up.
Thanks Jay. What have you been creating lately?
That's fabulous, the absolute best piece I've ever seen using resin in turning.
Thanks C, what would you use it for?
Wow! You have amazed me again Jack. The idea’s your beautiful mind comes up with in amazing. Anyone can see that you are in love with Woodturning. The pieces you make are museum worthy. Have you ever had an Art show?
You know Jack, I would have never believed that what you just did was even possible.i mean paper is made from wood, but wow brother that is mind blowing!
Haha. If you are aware of an old woodworking truck called a paper joint
(Where paper is used between two pieces of wood when glued so that it can hold firm while being worked by then also be able to rip it apart after) you’d definitely think this wouldnt work.. I was waiting for it to come flying apart on the lathe.
Wow! That is gorgeous! Such a simple idea that morphs into a stunning piece of art! Love it!
Thank you Sarah. 😉
o.0! This is so far the most beautiful thing I have seen being made. Truly stunning.
Thank you for the kind words my friend
my brain feels so good right now that was beautiful
My work here is done 😉👍🏻
this might top the list of coolest things ever made by mixing resin and random objects…and i haven’t even seen the finished piece yet.
yep i was right, first place for most unique thing ever made with resin. i hope you saved the shavings too, they looked pretty awesome as well. please make something with the other half of that ‘blank’ in the future!!
Thanks buddy. Means a lot. What do you think I could make with the off cut ?
Oh Jack...
That has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of art I've ever seen !...seriously !!.
Yes resin and paper..but never done this way with these results...
Brovo !!!...well done...
Recently I recommended your channel to a young man in Australia who's started his own turning business...I told him to look to you for inspiration..and it looks like I was right to do so...your turns are always ahead of the mark and you deserve all the recognition for your talents...
Thank you for this excellent art...🌿🌿🌿

Yeah I've never seen something like this before. It looks like a very colorful candle flame. I love it
Where have you seen something like this before?
@@JackMackWoodturning lol, I think you read my comment wrong. I said "never." I know it's late. This came out really cool looking.
Art is it's own reason for being. Spectacular!
Thanks D. Are you an artist?
Enjoy your creativeness and use of the colors. Another reason why I continue to watch your videos. 🙂🙂
Thanks May. Im glad you keep coming back.
A thing of rare beauty. Not seen anything quite like it. A real genius piece. Marvelous stuff, Jack!
Flattered by your kind words my friend
Absolutely beautiful! I love this idea. You are so creative! I love these colors and the design! Wow!!!
Thanks Stace. Glad you enjoyed it. What would you use it for?
Innovative, unique, and attractive. A great piece and a very interesting vid. Keep 'em coming Jack!
Thanks M. What is your pic?
I'm an author, trying to find words to describe how cool this is, how impressed I am by this project.
I can't do it. Mind officially blown.
Good morning beautiful. I hope you have a wonderful day.
I am normally not a fan of resin and non-wood projects but I have to admit, this looks really cool!
Same here really. Not too many colours?
When I go to modern art museums, THIS is the kind of thing I want to see!!!!
Gorgeous!!!
Nice one M. Does your cat need glasses?

One of the coolest uses of epoxy I've ever seen. Excellent job.
Well that’s just a very unique piece of wood turning. Love it.
Thank you
Well how gorgeous is that. What a fantastic idea. It would make a cool lamp. It’s modern and funky . It’s got it’s own personality. Love 💕 love 💕 love it.
Thanks Susan. That’s a lovely idea.

Wow! Great idea and looks very cool! So many ideas for shaping.
Thanks Mike. Are you going to give this a try ?
I wondered what you was going to do with all the paper and I was amazed when you put resin on them all but the end piece of turning is fantastic I really love it. I would likeit my front room. You always surprise me you really have a awesome imagination well done Jack it awesome x

Looks really good, and that little asymmetry in the opening makes it even better.
Thanks AK. Will you make one?
That is crazy cool! I want one to put on my desk! Love your videos, just haven't had a chance till now to watch any for a while! I never know what you're gonna end up with, but this piece is really amazing. Thanks Jack!
Nice one Jack. What would you pay for one of these out of curiosity? Cheers
@@JackMackWoodturning The number that pops in my head would be $60. Hopefully that's not an insult! LOL...really no idea how much that kind of stuff goes for.
I was just curious to see how people the pieces. No offence taken 😊👍🏻
This is absolutely stunning! Well done!
Thanks buddy. One for the mantle?
Simple yet elegant, very beautiful piece Jack.

👏👏belle œuvre d’art….tout ça,à partir de. Collage cartons..c’est inouïe👌👌
Thanks Marc, where are you watching from?
hi..i'm in France
Wow, this is unbelievably beautiful.
That's one of the most attractive turned artworks I've ever seen come alive.
For real ??
@@JackMackWoodturning - Absolutely. The split teardrop shape is really lovely.
Thanks Hal. What would you use it for ?
@@JackMackWoodturning - As an object of the contemplation of beauty. It is its own justification for being, like staring into a multicolored candle flame. Evolutionists have explanations for the survival value that beauty provides. Beauty doesn't exist outside of the mind. We have invented it. You invent it every time you strap something onto the lathe. Something of beauty that starts in _your_ mind, is then shared with the minds of all the people who witness your finished work. It is not just this graceful teardrop or candle flame, but all the other lovely children of your mind.
One might think that someone like say,,,nick zameti would have covered that. Lol, but , what a simple, never been done art piece. It’s very clever and you made it look easy. I got my first laith, like the other day. It’s waaaay harder than it looks. Great job.
Nice one Rich. You going to try it?
Zameti is too annoying. I’m glad Jack did it instead.
@@JackMackWoodturning i just bought my first laith very recently. But i will try something like it in a few months. Shit i made my first bowl yesterday. It. Is. Difficult. These guys make it look easy. I got a lot to learn.
@@drummerman1206 yeah, but he sure lets me know whaat NOT to do, his videos are funny and clever. But this cat jack nailed it!
He tried something kinda similar, but with coloured foam instead of paper and with less of a design. It uhh... it didn't work well at all.
Jack, what an AMAZING idea, execution & end piece. It is inspiring. Thank you. S🌞
No probs S. Thanks for watching. What would you use it for?
An ornament, a piece of art, needs no other purpose than to exhibit its beauty. That is statement enough. Most ingenious, with two other sources to do similarly or with another slant. Nicely done, thank you.
Nice one Tony. What you think it’s worth?
Hi . . . Made from paper. Amazing. I was absolutely glued to the screen watching what this was gonna end up like. The process was so interesting and the end result .... gorgeous. Thanks for sharing this. Take care.

Gives a whole new meaning to *”paper is actually modified wood”!* 🐱
Indeed it does! Why 1618?
@@JackMackWoodturning
Thanks for asking. There's a decimal point between 1 & 6 btw! 1.618 is the approx value of a constant ф (phi), its exact value is (1+√5)/2 and is directly linked to *Fibonacci Sequence.* My name's last 3 alphabets together kinda sounds like this, that's why I put the number. It's actually a ratio, artists & mathematicians call it the *Golden Ratio.* It can be found in various things, from every life form to every cosmic creation. Ancient Greek sculptors and artists used to think that God specifically chose this number for his creations. So they also adopted it for their builds, from wooden furniture to rock sculptures! In their opinion, applying it makes the things look "perfect"! Da Vinci also used it in all of his paintings! Perhaps your creations are following the golden ratio without you even knowing it! Cause they looks friggin awesome, man! 👍
This piece looks like something from a 1960's museum display. I love it.
Now that was amazing. I've done wood turning but nothing like that. Great idea and beautiful work.
Thanks M. Will you try it?
Professional work that requires a lot of hard work and patience.. it's a masterpiece
Thanks Mr Q. Do you collect butterflies?
Wow! That is really beautiful! I like the wood base, but I think I might like it better with just a flat bottom to stand alone. I really love it! Nice job and great idea!
Thanks Wendy. What would you use this for ?
@@JackMackWoodturning Create several of them; stick a small battery operated candle inside; string them all together; hang them to decorate and light up your outdoor patio or pergola. OR wire them up and create beautiful indoor light fixtures for above your kitchen island (hanging them at different heights from the ceiling) or for above the bar area at a pub or fun restaurant.
The beauty in that is everything. Omg!
Still my favorite. Had to come over from FB to watch some more videos and had to come watch this again.

Truly stunning piece, sir. 😍 It brings to mind an almost endless array of shapes the paper could be bound into for setting before being turned... amazing! 👍

Great comparison. Iv’e never tried t shirts but that could be fun. Have you made many?
@@JackMackWoodturning I've made a fair number over the years. It's just one of those random hobbies that come go every few years when I get a wild hair to play around with it. I can't produce the masterpieces that some people out there do, but it's hella fun 😁

Great job. At the beginning of the video I thought you were using felt and I hadn't thought of card stock. It is amazing what can be created with some stock, some epoxy and some imagination. It's like controlled Fordite!
Good with the light blue color on the inside to reflect light. Could also be done with different species of wood veneer. Like the flame shape.

That's amazing, and quite beautiful. I always thought something had to be cylindrical or round to be turned on a lathe. Obviously not, and you really have the technique down. I bet it was still a bit terrifying the first time you tried it, tho!
It’s been about 20 years since I started so it’s been a while since I felt terrified at the lathe
A really really beautiful piece. What a fantastic job!
Thanks! What’s a lava lama?
That is so beautiful. Who would guess it was card. True art.
Cool an**l plug
Awesome I also love how it’s not perfectly symmetrical at the top and you get that little curve right before the tip, if I didn’t know any better you may think it was on purpose. I would love this in black with a full spectrum of greens if I ever try to make something like this
What a lovely idea. I think black and white or black and a single colour would look great too. I feel these would sit well In a companionship of variations.
Sounds interesting. Or tricolor or school colors and on we go. Have fun Jack.
