- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
Woodturning - Cloth // Surely Not?
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a blank made with coloured fabric and epoxy resin into a decorative bowl. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

Would you like to see more if this technique?? Let me know below 👇🏻
I'd like to have this for my Mom. Her birthday is the 16th and she would LOVE it. Is it for sale?
Yes I would, I think it is amazing what you can do with a little imagination and a lot of talent, ya I would like to see this again
Yes I would watch. You can get crazy with patterns and such with more playing around.
Yes, would love to.
You know I hate to date myself, 62, but that reminds me of what the partridge family bus looked like
I've always been told to keep fabric away from a lathe. and this man is literally putting it on the lathe. What a mad lad
😆
Well, it's hardened first. Pliable fabric would be a disaster.
So much material removed. I'm sure this is expensive to make!
I’m sure he used felt, it has shorter length fibres. Less chance of catching on chisel. Obviously resin makes a huge difference. It’s very pretty.
@@phylisandrews9237y’figure?
Now you can call yourself a fiber artist! The fabric doesn’t disappoint with the visible texture using this technique. I love watching your experimental forays of turning unconventional objects. It’s fascinating.
❤️ I’m officially going to call myself a fiber artist 👍🏻
It's not really unconventional, the material is called micarta and people turn it all the time. First time I saw a bowl though, usually it's pens. Looks dynamite.
@@JackMackWoodturning When it cracked I was worried that it couldn't be turned for fear of catching.
@@austinaxley81 Also, wood is just plant fibers in a rigid binding medium, similar to this.
V!v!v!+
I’m a seamstress, a quilter, & a collector of fabric…I love this❣️
Thanks a lot. Would you add it to your collection?
All I could think of when he was assembling it was how expensive that fabric was
They are baby muslins. The cost of all these fabric was £12
Can you imagine doing some squares with the Bargello Strips? Now that would be absolutely AMAZING!!
Absolutely amazing, although a little gaudy for me.
And here we see the elusive silly string in it's natural environment, breathtaking!
As a metal guy, the stuff you wood guys do is terrifying. I keep expecting the guy who does the big gnarly root burls to end up on liveleaks.
We all do big gnarly stuff. But we know what we are doing. (Most of us) it would be a mistake to compare a machine lathe to a wood turning lathe using hand held tools. 👍🏻
>"as a metal guy"
>anime pfp
lol
@@JackMackWoodturninghow string is this bowl? Seems like it would be quite strong
I didn’t expect it to sound like wood
@@madpainter7114because it’s resin. I wouldn’t call this turning fabric or a fabric bowl, it’s basically straight resin.
I thought I was going to hate this but it came out so much cooler than I could have imagined!
Yeah I feel the same 🤣
Think I will revisit this one.

Loath am I to admit it, but it exceeded my expectations too. 🤭
THAT IS SO COOL!!!! I LOVE when artists use materials in new ways! Now I’m just imagining a yarn bowl made out of yarn scraps!!!
Yes!!! I was thinking the exact thing! You could get an unlimited supply from your lys (local yarn store.) They would probably be happy to get rid of the waste from balling up skeins.
This material is called micarta. It's not new.
That would be amazing!!
If I hadn't watched this I would never have known this piece was made out of colors of cloth and resin. Looks like tied dye.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 A stunning piece of art!
Sane here. Too beautiful!!
BEAUTIFUL "tie-dye" effect, and I KNOW that it ISN'T true tie-dye
Sono veramente e pienamente d'accordo con te.
Le persone che li fabbricano sono veramente dei maestri e secondo me possiamo e dobbiamo solo apprezzare quanto fanno.
Sabrina 👍👋
I love that you can still see the fibres in the fabric. The colours are so striking. Stunning work of art.
My sis owns a fabric store, so I was really curious to see how this _turned_ out. I’ve always loved things being used(especially artistically) in ways other than they were made for.
The cool thing is it would have a whole different appearance if the color layers were in a different order.
😉 _turned out_ nice! 👍
Thank you for sharing this! I think it would look good in other colourway fabrics too, like softer autumn colours, or black, white and greys! Wonderful work and so enjoyable to watch!
Softer autumn colors would be good. and a red, green, and white for Christmas. Various seasonal/holiday versions would be fun to have.
@@mmg8823 You used the MAGIC word, SEASONAL
Absolutely stunning! I don't know if you still have the shavings (or are willing to make more) but it would be cool to see them suspended in clear or glow-in-the-day resin. Like a funfetti
He says he's got plans 4 the shavings....
Thank you for filling in the little holes! I would like to see something made with the colored shavings or even wood shavings. The bowl looks like a Mexican fiesta bowl!❤
It doesn't look mexican at all. 🤔
That's exactly what it reminded ME of TOO Viggy! 😊😊😊
Hahaha it does NOT look like a Mexican fiesta bowl. We Mexicans have better taste than that.
@@deem3204 Yeah, it does. Looks just like the bowls we seen all over mexihell when we went down there a few years ago.
I think Viggycat is referring to the vibrant color. This is not something to get offended about! It's a beautiful piece!
At what point do we just admit that Woodturning is now just Epoxyturning that sometimes has bits of wood in it?
When it’s done with rice krispies
@@kingkappa9315😂
Sir, this is the internet.
Sir. I don't understand how I got here, so respectfully I'll say: shut up. Stop asking questions.
Although I watch epoxy videos, my two lathes have never seen epoxy. One is for wood and the other is a metal lathe. It's kinda like a Bob Ross episode. I've never oil painted, but I appreciate Bob's work and passion.
I would love to see this done with a printed fabric. A batik fabric perhaps. So very fascinating. Great job.
Wow .. This was amazing! The final product is stunning!
can’t overstate how much i enjoy the projects you’ve been doing lately. they are a joy to watch and hopefully inspire as much creativity in everyone else as they do for me.
this one is screaming jawbreaker to me, even the shavings looked delicious. or maybe those thermal camera images where heat is the reds and yellows and cool areas are blue.
resin is such a unique and dynamic material, so many possibilities, but the things you are doing with it have been my favorite without a doubt.
Woah! The coloured chips coming off are awesome! ❤
I have plans for them 😉😉
I hope so they are to good to waste😍

Master piece indeed...love it very much. Thanks from Karachi, Pakistan.
Great to watch the transition from ordinary clothes to a stunning bowl. Very calming to watch.
The purple almost appears black, and that’s not a bad thing. It just makes your piece more unique. The bowl looks stunning.
it's because cyan and red are opposites! for a more vibrant purple you'd want to mix magenta and blue instead.
@@digitaldrittenI was thinking because the fabric was soaked in resin.
This is absolutely the coolest thing I've seen in a long time! 😮 Very artistic. I appreciate your craftsmanship! Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. 🎉🤌👍😁👏👏👏👏
So you like it then ? 😉
You sir are one in a million +just the wow factor in this bowl … time for big bags of all the M&M colours for this bowl . Those fabric blocks would have also made a wonderful looking quilt .. ❤😂
Thank you Sonya. 😊
I'm so colorful and so pretty, I can't believe that it's made of cloth! Really beautiful. Great job
WOW What a Masterpiece 👍👍🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰

This absolutely mesmerized me! I definitely want to see more fabric turning. What a vibrant and gorgeous piece!
This 78 year old bowl is a young vibrant man. Lol
Yes, that's the right word, mesmerizing! I was absolutely transfixed watching this procedure and all I kept thinking was, I want this bowl, or one of your pieces. Incredible! Thank you
It’s awesome what you can do with resin.
That’s a beautiful bowl.
Yeah it’s a great material
So creative!😊Turned out beautiful♥️
You opened my mind to "what" can be turned. Thanks for sharing‼️
Unique fiber ART! Seriously lovely!
That resin must be an incredibly strong binding agent. You never disappoint. I love the way you experiment. Thanks for sharing.
Going to be real I thought at first this was some kind of joke or something but the more and more that I watched this video and saw them literally make it go from fabric and apoxy resin to how crazy looking it was at the end it's totally nuts.
Keep up the good work.
The explosion of color on this piece is marvelous. Wonderful work as always.
This is FANTASTIC and beautiful… congratulations…. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of art
a living legend of turning various things suspended in resin on a wood turming lathe and also wood. The bowl is exquisite, thanks for sharing this with us
What?!? You dont even need WOOD for woodworking?!🤯🤯🤯🤯 ❤
You definitely need an etsy account. The things you create are so beautiful!!! I absolutely love this one. Great job!!!

Yes, I was looking where I could purchase an item.
They have their website. (Better for the artist)
That's awesome! Thank you! Here's to even more success!! 🍻🥂
I can't believe how much mess your craft makes!!! 😆 I could never deal with that much mess! But your results are phenomenal, and your artwork is amazing!! ❤️ I like how you can see the weave of the fabrics on the exterior.
So beautiful! Just thinking of other color combinations… In the colors of major league teams… these would be a wild, commercial success! They would surely sell big!
Wow!!! This is such a creative and fascinating piece. I love it. I'm amazed at how you turned rolled pieces of fabric into a vividly colorful piece of art. Just stunning!
You just discovered Micarta.
Whats micarta
@@xedrickOG It's basically any fabric infused or saturated with epoxy as is shown in the video.
I'm surprised there's not more comments pointing that out. Micarta has been used for decades.
I thought this was going to be a disaster, but it turned out so beautiful!
That is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time! It’s gorgeous!
I was mesmerized the whole time! You basically made a usable bowl out of shirt material- that is AWESOME :D and the colors make me very happy

I am a quilter and I Love what you have done with fabric. This is beautiful ❤️
Hello fellow quilter! I’m equally amazed at this fabric bowl!
I have fabric here at home too, and I would definitely love to see the different designs that could come from different fabrics! Now I want a fabric bowl. Haha!

I love the the dye rainbow effect and I really like the shape, I almost would have been tempted not to carve out the inside because it looked like a tie dye carnation after you shaped it before you removed the center but either way it’s an awesome project I am really juice taken by it!
That is so cool. Innovative and with great craftsmanship!
wow that was amazing! despite all the waste materials. And I know just the person who would love a fabric bowl. how cool!
It’s so beautiful ❤ I have never seen wood turning using fabric but it is so fascinating to watch. Great job!
It looks like the place was silly stringed 😭 2:20
This turned out so good, I love the random patterns and the colors are nice and bright.
This was definitely fun to watch.
Great job on this one.
Keep up the fantastic work sir.
The heat signature look is outstanding! I love this!
Ngl I didn’t think I was going to like this at all but I really enjoyed both the process and the finished product! Super cool idea!
...I've always thought that the very fabric of your channel was innovation in your artwork...you just eliminated any doubt I had...😉
Well done...it's amazing!...👍
Gorgeous! I'm impressed you were able to keep the edges clean while rolling up the fabric. Did you have to sharpen your tools more often with the fabric rather than your usual materials?

yessssss 9:38 too
That is really an awesome bowl! Good job!
I am ABSOLUTELY GOBSMACKED!!! The ingenuity to use, of ALL MEDIUMS, FABRIC is astonishing and the final piece is TRULY EXQUISITE and singularly unique! I bow, almost touching my head to my knees, to such fabulous creativity, discipline and vision. It looks like a genuine, primitive piece from Africa and I ADORE it.❤🧡💛💚💙💜‼
As a crafter, thanks for bringing my world to yours! This amazing piece would make a perfect yarn bowl! I think it’s very retro looking piece, love it! ❤
I think all of those colorful shreds would be an awesome experiment project! Cast them in some clear resin, like a polka dotted vase or something !!
I'd love to see this with gradients of the same color, I think the monochromatic look would be stunning. Also ironing the fabric before dipping and rolling it out in the epoxy to see how thin of layering you can get would be cool, or experimenting with different natural fibers like wool or burlap
Wood turning RUclips will reach epic proportions after a "Wood turning my grandma" video. This genre is still in its infancy!
Mounting my Grandma on a lathe?
A beautiful array of colors and textures. It's amazing what you can do with a turning lathe!
The sheer ingenuity and creativity of this is awe inspiring!❤
If you enjoyed this should try using fabric with patterns could potentially get really cool effects! Ooh like what if you combined the techniques of dried flowers in resin with a floral print fabric.
Up next: Tailoring a wooden cardigan.
You can never go wrong with lots of colour. Ace piece!
Expert craftsman with such artistry and talent. This is Gorg! Very indigenous looking. I love it!!!
Please tell me you saved those shavings to add to another piece! I would love something like that in my sewing room. Beautifully done.

You could knit a blanket for 10 people with those excess strands or make an anti-ghillie suit
The ghost of a Ghillie suit
I don't think you could make much with those strands.....
How about using materials that otherwise would be trash
Who’s gonna keep the landfills full then? Ur stoopid
That’s a great idea! I bet he’s thinking up ways to do so right now! ♥️
my thought exactly, what a waste
Yeah. I agree. Shit like this makes me so mad. Use scraps, not shit other people could’ve purchased for actual needs
Очень правильно делать красоту из мусора. А в этом ролике показано, как из большого куска шикарного материала сделать много мусора
Yay! More plastic dust in the universe!
Using the fabric would put just as much into the world, given time. This RUclipsr is not at fault for unsustainable cloth making practices.
@@WildWaver fabric? You mean plastic fabric? Yes. Cotton fabric is made of... Cotton...
@@Tenekai yeah. and if you're complaining about plastic dust you must be assuming these aren't cotton, no? where did i lose you.
@@WildWaver bro... You're so lost. Epoxy... Is... Plastic...
@@Tenekai oooh yeah i was definitely lost. yeah, there should be a better replacement for that, too. either way, yknow, someone else was gonna use the epoxy, it's less this guy's fault than it is our plastic-reliant society at large though
I would so buy this. It's so pretty and a bowl made of fabric
I really like this bowl. Love it so much. Beautiful and so artsy, happy colors.
Nice work, Jack. Question: Will it be possible to soak the whole blank in cactus juice (or even thin resin) and put it in a vacuum pot first? That might get rid of all the air bubbles (I think). I have only once worked with resin and decided - never again. Too much of a mess. I love to look at it on youtube however. Kind regards.
This blank went into the vacuum chambers for some time and then into the pressure pot. I thought there were no chance there would be bubbles. Then I opened the pot and the it looked like that ☹️… I have plans to improve on this technique. Watch this space. 😉
What happens to all the resin waste?
Turned into a jumper
😂😂😂@@ZabZabZabie
As someone who's been in Woods class last year (currently a Junior as I'm typing this), the wast gets vacuumed if memory serves correctly
Though it may vary, idfk
