Here I review and rank 5 new designer fragrances. I warn you now that the description of "shampoo" comes up a lot in this video... this was a mixed bag. One in perfume in particular here, I was really excited to try, so much that it was nearly a blind buy, so do I regret only buying a sample or did I save myself some hassle?

I love Devotion. I do feel like the performance is getting better as my bottles sits. It really is interesting.
Devotion is really more interesting the more you smell it, first time around I didn't notice the spiced fruit cake feel in the background, only the lemon-orange transition and the vanilla. 🙃
I've tried Devotion 3 times now, and it's still fairly medicinal to me, my sister said it was like a lemon scented cleaning product. Each time I have tried it however, I have liked it (ever so slightly) more. Still not a love by any means but I can see how it's likeable now.. 💛
I do quite like the 3 Gucci Flora scents, I'm going to retest my sample of gorgeous magnolia! 🥰
Yes, I remember the first time I tried it in store, I got a definite whiff of fabric plasters, but with my sample, I didn't get that at all 🤷♀️ so maybe some batch to batch variation... I'm not sure!
I just have an issue with that grainy feeling musk, if you don't have those issues, then probably Gucci Flora GM is strong and long lasting and different.

Devotion on top of a body lotion like Bath & Body Works Iced Lemon Poundcake is delicious.
I bet! BBW seem to have a matching fragrance for layering for most things! I heard Body Shop aren't doing well here. I wonder whether Bath and Body Works will make the move to the UK as a result... 🤔

We have them in a few Next stores (6?) in London I think and there is a limited selection online (I think it's basically just vanilla bean Noel 🤣) so yes... 🤔

I think really only the Kayali is super new, maybe also the JPG? The others have been around since last summer I think, but I like ranking things and I really don't like talking about things I don't have a sample of and that I can't try a number of times, so I get samples and then do a batch of new ones. It's rare to find a gem unfortunately.
Hello Claire! 🥰 Excited to watch! I've been so busy lately I'm trying to catch up on everything! Sparkling Lychee is a very strong Like for me but so very disappointing as far as performance goes. One of the loveliest scents, but it is one of the very worst performers I have 😢 Luckily I only have a travel, and if it gets stronger as it sits I'll at least think about repurchasing.. possibly 😅
Aah good! I'm happy you love it, the performance is certainly underwhelming. People have said this gets better as it ages though so I'm hopeful for you! ❤️

I dont care for Guccis or Mac Jacobs at all🤠To fresh for my taste.
Devotion was the clear winner here 🏆 it really stood out as something distinctive 😊
I agree with your thoughts on the Kayali, I ended up with a full size of it (story coming soon, lol) but the lasting power is so short! I can't decide if I want Devotion or not, but I have a feeling it's one that will eventually come down in price and show up on the grey market.

Hi Claire! 💖 I'm glad you like Devotion. I find it to be so fun, warm, and sweet. Our daughter really adores the Gucci one, but I can see how it's not for everyone.

I'm sure your daughter doesn't share my musk preferences. I wish it didn't turn me off so much but grainy musk is an instant no for me, I did like the dry fruitiness though at the beginning and it was strong and long lasting. It probably would smell better on someone else from afar rather than close up 🥰
I purchased Le Male Elixir for my husband for Christmas, he had sprayed on a sample of it one day and we both loved it! It reminded us both of the ever elusive F-16 from Jamaica that I always used to speak about, so we were thrilled to find this!! ❤
It's probably the nicest male marketed new designer launch I've tried in a while, but it's still on the edge with iso E super for me. It would be good to sniff on someone else I think 😊
I remember the time Devotion came out I was purposely avoiding it because I just don't like to get on the hype train, however! After extensive research I decided to give it a go, so I went down to my local Boots and sprayed it on... it was love at first sniff! It does get better with time, I find the longevity improved since I first opened it. I agree, it is not very similar to Bake, that one I didn't get along with., way too sweet for my liking!
I actually tried it before I saw anyone talk about it and I remember messaging a fellow RUclipsr saying why is no one talking about this?! I was so excited to find something vaguely original! It's on my long list I think, I love that it might last longer with age 😊 I do still want to try the Akro but a few people have said that they don't enjoy it as much as Devotion so I'm not thinking I will prefer it. I love the magnolia version of gucci but now you say it I must admitt yes it smells like washing powders and softners 😅 omg i hope it won’t ruin the whole experience for me 😂 thank you claire for your reviews I love it when you talk about our perfumes! ❤

Yes, Devotion probably takes the cake! 😊 I loved it too, although haven’t purchased it yet. I think it’s on my list for the next winter season. It was extremely sweet though, and while I like sweet perfumes a lot, it was a bit too much a little. Still the bottle is so glamorous and Art Deco like, I might still persuade myself to buy it. Can’t stay away from perfume habit/passion for too long! I also am not too impressed with the new line of Beautiful Gardenia/Jasmine/etc. I actually prefer the glass bottles, and then they seem a bit boring too. Great videos by the way! 🌺
Yes! I agree, I always felt like the original Flora line were pretty but they didn't excite me at all, now I'd love to smell those again 😂 Devotion is sweet, I agree, but I am tempted by it if I see a good price. Lovely to see you back! 🥰

I smelt Sparkling Lychee in a shop and it was exactly what I thought it would be - fresh, bright but boring. Meh. Kayali are not a brand for me. Devotion is nice but Bake takes (....the cake?!) it for me, I just find the longevity better and it's a bit punchier. I love Le Male Elixir, but I absolutely love Le Male and pretty much all it's flankers / incantations - when I met my partner 15 years ago he was wearing the amazing Fleur de Male and I've continued to buy the different versions for him over the years, so I'll pick up Elixir at some point when he's run out of the current one. I've just had my sample of the new Alien Hypersense drop through my letterbox as I was watching! Hope you managed to catch one Claire? 🙂
Ooh I really need to get the Akro discovery set and also get samples of the ones that aren't in that because I absolutely love Dark! 😍

Alien hypersense, yes, I am on my fourth wear this afternoon. I actually like the drydown 😊 I love that there is a bit more jasmine this time too. If I get time, I'll make a video. But I'm off to Rome soon and then have a job interview so who knows?! Did you like it?

I like it for sure, but it seems pretty true to original (reformulated) Alien so (as is often the case with flankers) my first impression is nice, but is it necessary?! 🙂 Ooh have a great holiday, I'm hoping to go to Rome later this year (going to Paris in March on a solo trip and hoping to do a LOT of perfume sniffing) and good luck for the interview 🤞

I don't think I'll get to do much sniffing sadly. I am not sure. Paris is a lovely place to wander. I went for work in 2019 and got about 8 hours to myself in total and I just liked wandering around the area we were. I've been so many times that I think I've ticked the touristy stuff. Nowadays for sure I'd be headed for the fragrance and some sniffing!

@@dr.claire.perfume I mean, if I was 10 years younger and new to perfume, that bottle would totally wow me! And I'd probably smell it and really like it so...perhaps it's just us old timers with above average size collections that end up thinking this?! 😀
@@emmahaydon5564 I think this is the problem with reviews isn't it? Everyone comes at this from a different perspective and you have to try to see this from different angles. I hate grainy musks, ambrox when it's all I smell and iso E super when it makes things dry, but most people don't hate those things and some don't even smell them... It's both something that has to be your own opinion with reviews but given with an acknowledgement that other people may think differently. I think that Mugler will be less popular than Goddess, because the note profile is not as appealing, but I think it's a better fragrance that fits within the Alien DNA more easily as a true flanker and as an original EDP fan, it doesn't ring my bell but does so more than their other releases of late. No, it's not exciting or going to be discussed, probably in 5 years time even, but yes, I agree, we aren't the target audience. 🤣

I think there's definitely a market for them. If you want something very sweet, they are a go to! I think I was looking for something more lychee based with Eden sparkling lychee, but it's sweet blackcurrant 😂

I really appreciate your insight. It's honest and not pretentious. I wanted to develop my nose for notes in fragrances. Do you have a scent kit that could recommend?
I don't sadly. I just sniffed an awful lot of fragrances and compared them to identify notes, it's probably not the best way to learn, a kit would be better. I also befriended an expert who taught me a lot, especially with notes that I don't tend to really know much about because I don't sniff them often in mainstream fragrances, e.g guaic wood. It's taken me years to be vaguely confident though and I still do look at notes too. Although I try to sniff things blind first time around and think about what I sniff, because seeing notes influences you. I hope that helps!

Hi Claire, I think Devotion is really nice too. I haven't purchased a bottle because I want to be sure it's not too similar to Kerosene Unknown Pleasures which I adore. It's a lemony, earl gray tea, bergamot, honey, Tonka bean, vanilla dream. I think it's such a fantastic fragrance at a relatively reasonable price. Definitely in my top 5. All that to say, I wonder if I'd find them too similar. I need to test. Thank you for all you do Claire.

Hello Claire. Marc Jacobs was never on my radar. Im looking for an office friendly fragrance so I will get a sample of this. Kayali lychee is like fruitgums (haribo) to me and lasted for 2 hours. I gave the sample away. Wearing Devotion my partner asked what on earth I was wearing. He said “ this is so not you”. He is right, orange blossom is not my cup of tea and I thorougly dislike this note. The opening is ok but the rest I do not need. Thank you for your video!
I do like the Perfect line of fragrances from Marc Jacobs. I think they are mass appealing and easy but with interesting notes that you don't find in every fragrance out there.

I like Devotion but I agree, I am quite sick of orange blossom in designer fragrances. In general it's not a note that's often done well either. I actually think Devotion isn't a bad example of it on the whole, but yes if you don't like it then that's Devotion out for you 😊 thanks for watching 🥰

Kayali fragrances haven't appealed to me until now, maybe too much marketing for too little quality?The hype is big. JPG The Male bottle is so beautiful, the fragrance is interesting. I guess my grainy musk issue is not something others share. I think the dry fruitiness at the beginning is pleasant and it's a strong and long lasting fragrance so those are winners 😊 Kayali I'm done with for now 🤣 lesson learnt! You should really try to smell Akro Bake. It’s pretty close but Bake is more sophisticated like a high end lemon tart 😊. I already have Bake when I smelled Devotiom and while Devotion stood out amongst what I tried that day, I concluded that I don’t need a ‘duplicate’.
Yes I want to try all of the Akros. I went on the website a few months back but there was no discovery set with them all in. I noticed though that there are UK distributors though. Hopefully all of the fragrances will get put in a discovery set soon. I really loved Dark when I tried that one 🥰

I haven't tried it, but I saw it last Saturday and was curious! When I am not already covered in fragrance I will give it a spritz! It sounds like a nice one.

I don't think it will sadly, you might get 20 / 30% off at some point but the prices are relatively fixed as the fragrances are not stocked in many outlets.

I'm not affiliated with Jomashop at all... I'm just sharing the same deal I got. Devotion is on sale at this online shop right now for Valentine's day. I find Jomashop actually lowers their prices like old-school sales, instead of always selling at a 30% decrease like other online fragrance stores. In many cases, Jomashop's sales are a better deal than other online stores. I find sometimes I get a more efficient delivery time with other stores, but I'm willing to wait for the better deal. You know what? Jomashop contacted me and offered me a collaboration, but I didn't want to because it would involve affiliate links... And I don't want to earn money like that... They offered 5% of all sales, which I guess if it's a big channel, could be a lot of money, I guess it's lucrative for people to accept so many people do? People seem to rate them as a company though. 🤔 I don't know, is this something I should be doing if people like them? 🤷♀️

What are your values and principles here? Eden Sparkling Lychee the opening is beautifull. But as you say, I must spray and spray to get that opening. Its light

Thanks for the amazing videos. I tried Devotion. I liked and it stayed on me all the day. However, I have bad experiences with edible perfumes. They bother me after a while.. so I am still hesitant 😢

Something must be wrong with my nose, because Devotion smells almost identical to Paco rabanne olympea solar to me. I was so surprised. I love olympea solar, but I had my mind on buying Devotion, luckily I sampled it first. They are too similar to my nose to justify having both.

Haven’t tried Perfect EDT either 😂😂 but EDP & Intense are both lovely releases. My favourite has to be the Intense - smells grainy and more austere than the EDP, which I find to be fruity and green
Devotion smells sour. Not so keen on that one 😂

You're right, Perfect Intense, does have texture. It's dense.

Le Male elixir is the nicest new male marketed fragrance I tried in a long while, and I've sampled a lot of the releases over the last years or two.

I actually enjoy the edt of perfect but mainly because it reminds me of like a fresh fruity shampoo. It wouldn’t warrant a full bottle but I do like to smell it when I’m out window shopping
Yes exactly! It's a good shampoo fragrance. Not for me but Marc Jacobs do them well. I think Perfect overall is a nice line.
Liking Devotion more now… but wasn’t a fan of it at first 😂
Was it the slightly sticky plaster vibe? I sometimes get that from bottles in store but not my sample weirdly. 🤷♀️

The Kayali does sound a disappointing one. Though I get they have to have a few very mass appealing ones. Shame about the blackcurrant and violet in it.
The MJ sounds well erm yea... Sorta what's expected.
The D&G does sound delightful in the opening 😍 maybe I'd not love that warm vanilla ending. Sweet could be a struggle.
The Gucci sounds well is horrific fair? 🤣. Shampooey sadly isn't every me.
The Le Male does sound very pleasant and the leather touch sounds very good. Not everyone in the 90s 😉.
Kayali last 😱 we can't love them all. I thought you'd like shampoo conditioner ones 😉.
The top two, yes they sound OK. Desginer fragrance is so on fire atm 🙄 so much "creativity"

I will give you the Kayali to try so you can see what you think, but I was hugely underwhelmed... The MJ I had different experiences with, the first time all I smelt was ambroxan, the second, third and fourth time it seemed a bit nicer.
I feel like you might think Devotion is zzz, but it's a lot less zzz than the other releases 😂
I hate the Gucci because it was so grainy but at least it was persistent and the fruity coconut combo was interesting.
That jpg was the nicest new male marketed designer release I'd smelt in a long time. It is still stuffed with aromachemicals though 🤷♀️ I will again give you that one to sniff at some point. I'm interested to know what you think 🥰

Yea it's a shame from Gucci I think they are normally one of the few brands left with a bit of creativity. Or they were.

I've only tried Devotion in the ones you tried. It's great! But since the dry down reminds me of Lira (on my skin), I wasn't in a rush to buy it... although there was a hint of spiciness or maybe zestiness that was quite nice with Devotion.
I sampled and bought the new Black Opium (not a surprise).😊 Tried 2 of the Pop flankers by Marc Jacobs last week. Felt generic to me (but that's just my opinion).
People have been comparing the new Kayali to Eden Juicy Apple. Don't even want to bother with that one... I can't seem to get on board with this brand. I haven't been wowed by any of the 6 I've tried or owned so far. 🤷♀️
Yes! I love the spicy and zesty feel to Devotion, it's nice close up and far away and that's what I want from a fragrance. Same with over red! The new Black Opium is like some cherry lolly or cherry sweets, not the same cherry at all as lost cherry, much lighter. But still sweet. It's good 😊
Ooh I saw the pop flankers! I didn't pick them up to spray though... Sounds like I shouldn't get excited but I will go back and try those!
Yeah if you don't like Eden Juicy Apple, you won't like Sparkling Lychee (which is actually blackcurrant 🤷♀️). I must say, I liked the earlier ones compared with the more recent ones. I'm ever less excited by Kayali at the moment. I didn't try the ouds though...

I think Kayali is acting a bit like a soulless money making machine... Maybe instead of putting out almost 10 fragrances a year with hyped notes, they could try to make 2-3 really good ones that stand out. But hey, that's just my opinion...
Yes I agree. Fans don't know which to try first. People can't keep up. Better and more spaced would keep their customer base happier I think 😊
Devotion made me immediately think of “delizia al limone”, a Neapolitan dessert 😊 but literal gourmands are not my thing so did not buy it even if it’s delicious

It's really lovely, I think it does turn more floral and less gourmand as it goes along but yes, it's certainly a full on gourmand at the beginning!
Hi Claire! You actually made Sparkling Lychee sound way more interesting than I perceive it 😂. Don't you feel in it that strong body mist vibe? For me smells like a B&BW body mist. The end.
We don't have Bath and Body Works here but yes, it's a fun short-lived one at an inappropriate price for the longevity. I don't really love those fruity shampoo ones, so I guess I'm not the target audience. But I can see some people loving it, same with Eden Juicy Apple I think.
Loved the review, Claire. I tried Devotion last time I was at Sephora and found it pleasant. It disappeared on my skin rather quickly, too. I'm not sure why people are comparing it to Bake because I find them quite different. Devotion is a very sweet orange blossom to me and Bake is more gourmand (in a pastry-like sense). There's something in the Bake dry down that I'm not sure I like, but hopefully you can try it sometime and let us know what you think.
Yes, well .. people compare things that share one note and call them dupes don't they?! 🤣 I don't think Akro are the easiest fragrances from what I've heard in reviews. I like Dark but I think people are out of guard by the patchouli which I don't think is mentioned in the notes. I would love to try Bake. It's interesting you say that there's something in the drydown that you aren't sure about as there are lots of bottles flying around eBay 🤣 hype and blind buying regrets I expect! 🥰

@@dr.claire.perfume Sadly not a keeper. All Akro fragrances smell a bit rough in texture to me (not sure how else to state it). I find them to be extremely interesting but they don't excite me. They don't spark joy.
@@dcjimr1 yeah I get that from Dark. It's definitely got texture. I think that's part of the reason I've not pounced. That and wanting to make sure I don't prefer another one from Akro. I did really love the sample from Jon though. 😊

I know you didn't love it... I don't know whether there were some issues with some testers, but the first one I spritzed had a distinct smell of fabric plasters about it. 🤷♀️ My little sample doesn't have that at all... Weird!

Hi lovely Dr. Claire!! Is it weird that our wish lists, which are still long compared to "normies," have shrunk down. We've smelled so much that it takes a LOT to wow us. I couldn't get Devotion off my mind, and it had been a long time since I'd had that feeling. I hope, as @jaxbeautifulyou mentions below that the performance gets better with time. I can speak to my Royale Vanilla Kayali fragrance becoming more long-lasting as it sat, so maybe it would be the same with the Eden? I always enjoy my time with you! xo
I really used to think people who were picky with designer were snobby but three and a half years later... Here I am. I just think after a while we've smelt it before and also probably we're more sure of what we like or don't. Devotion is really lovely and a bit different.
I'm in Italy right now soaking up 19oC, it's so strange for it to be this warm in February 😂 I'm enjoying it though! 🙂
