The retro-modern Theodore Standard sprung from the future-forward mind of legendary Gibson president Ted McCarty in 1957. But unlike his iconic Flying V, Firebird and Explorer designs, the “Theodore” was never produced during his lifetime-only appearing as a limited-edition Gibson Custom Shop model in 2022.
Happily, McCarty’s visionary guitar is now available to all players. The Theodore Standard offers a mahogany body, Slim Taper mahogany neck with Indian rosewood fretboard, 24.75" scale, 22 frets, Gibson ’57 Classic neck humbucker and ’57 Classic Plus bridge humbucker.
“This funky shape looks like a pretty flower-a tulip of sorts,” says Towa Bird. “But the Explorer-style headstock is all rock and roll. It has a nice balance of feminine and masculine-a little androgynous. The Theodore is very dynamic and has great sustain-even when I pick as soft as a feather. The bridge pickup position is my favorite by far. It sounds warmer than I expected-like a nice hug-and it delivers excellent response with heavy gain.”

So hopefully Gibson will do more with this model in the future, like flames maple caps, cool custom colors…like the colors found in tulips. I think it would be fun to have wild custom colors and flamed tops. Since his doesn’t have a historical background so to speak vs all of Gibsons other models, Gibson can go crazy with this model and not worry about upsetting the purists…which I am one of those 😂. Looking forward to adding the Theodore to the collection sometime this year! ❤

So close, i just want a maple cap on that thing even if its a lil thin one, i think thats the only thing its missing. We already have several Mahogany dual bucker models, Vs, SGs, Explorers, slap a cap on that thing!

The body has some getting used to, but it does sound nice.

This is absolutely a case of function over form. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but it looks like it would sit very comfortably on your lap while in a seated position. And I think there is a chance that the horn shape might resist neck dive.
So to be honest, if it’s more comfortable to play in the upper registry, It resist neck dive, and feels comfortable in a seated position.... well Then the only two things I would be worried about our a little bit more of a comfort cut away for my picking and strumming arm, and making sure that the brake angle over the night is correct. (Because I am slightly concerned about the strings pulling out word on the knot and not just down.)
But at the end of the day it’s going to come down to getting these instruments in peoples hands so that they can find what they do and don’t like.

To the haters out there - they hated the flying V and explorers, too. I'm glad Gibson took a chance on this, ordered mine TODAY!

How do you like it? It’s been 11 days since your posted comment. I bet it’s amazing! What color finish did you go with?

@@Joey_McElroy Got the vintage cherry. Sounds great. Gibson QC living up to it's less than stellar reputation, though. I had to tweek the truss rod about a quarter turn, and there's a small speck of dirt in the finish on the back of the neck near the heel. Other than that, I love it! Feels, looks and plays great

If I had money to spend I would also “gravitate toward” Gibson and other guitars.

Like the explorer and V back in the day also. Now they are accepted. Hard to say how this one will go down in history. I bought one, as a dude. Not sure I felt ok with the female body and metal head comment. But I enjoy the hell out of it.

@@kensmith5108it can be for anyone. Just enjoy it and forget what others think or say because who cares at the end of the day. Guitars are unisex. And re its shape everyone has different taste. Enjoy it!!!!
