I could see a Theo version of this being like a limited low budget player with the SG elite pickguard. Maybein TV yellow. I'm trying to plan a Crestwood im my future if you're still interested in reviewing one.
I'm fine with them not doing the walnut stripe, despite it still being sad they removed it, but they should've kept the Alder body, 4 knobs dot inlay no binding fretboard..
The local music store gave me a great deal so I bought one. The shape is a little strange; but not so extreme as a Flying V or Explorer. I've grown to love it! Plays great, is light and the single volume & tone knobs are easy to deal with. Only downside is the top mounted signal cord jack; maybe could use a Strat style angled jack?
The 57 Classic / Classic+ set is my favorite Gibson pickup set, so having those in this without having to pay to replace Burstbuckers or 490R/490T is excellent. That makes this guitar cheaper for me. I'm not buying one, but I wouldn't turn it down if it was a gift. I do like the changes to the control layout. I prefer master tone and master volume, and wish more LPs had that layout. I know it's technically limited, but meh. Otherwise it'd just be a funny-looking SG.
I've got a black first run. Love it. I know the design is a love it/hate it thing, but it's a design that transcends genre; I can just as easily see this in metal/punk/country bands. All it'll take will be a high-profile player taking one on and it'll become a success for Gibson.
The overall look of this guitar reminds me of a Tokai Talbo (although the design drawing must pre-date the Tokai). Usually I've been liking natural wood finishes but the suggestions of the pastel colors are neat and give it more of a retro and fun feel. It could have a bit of a Danelctro vibe to it. It sounded pretty good. The Explorer style headstock is a bit 'pointy' which still suggests rock/metal to me. Or has that time now passed and are those types of headstocks now accepted more widely?
Like this guitar!! Way more than I thought..... The neck profile option is a good thing.... The Les Paul pick guard actually looks good. There's a lot that can be done with this guitar. All the spec mods / changes that can happen are an awesome hope for the future....
I actually loved that guy's rendering. If it was done exactly like his I'd want one in pink. Don't really think the current ones in the video look nice at all. The pink with the off white plastics and reflector knobs made me think 50s with the body shape, like old Cadillac cars.
People have been saying the same thing about Telecasters, Flying Vs and Explorers that they are ugly. I love Theodores. I wish they had a Emerald Green with white pearl pickguard version...
It's possible that design didn't go anywhere with Gibson in the '50s because the body shape was very similar to the Rickenbacker Combo 400. Gibson's designs were distinct from their competitors.
I like these. I think Gibson should put them out in more colors like you said, maybe have Epiphone do it. Get a fancy one into like Matt Pike's hands or another artist. They could also do an ultra fancy neck through one with the stripe or maybe two stripes.
What's going on with the neck-to-body joint on the Custom Shop version? At 3:26, it looks like there's - at worst - a filler piece between the body and the neck heel, or at best, a bad stain line.
It kind of reminds me of the Teisco "Tulip" model guitar. Either that or a semi-Rickenbacker type design. Of course, there was also Gibson's "Wally" model that came out later that year and.........
I actually like this one better over custom shop one. And I feel this sounds better than the standard Les Paul. And it's cheaper! And it has it's own vibe. Enough said
I didn’t like these when the Custom Shop model came out in 2022, but when I heard those, I changed my mind. The Custom version sounded really good in the demos I saw, with the P-90s and the wraparound bridge. I was initially disappointed when I saw these production versions with the 57 Classics, but darn, they sound good too! I’m slowly getting used to the shape-I still don’t love it, but it’s growing on me. The only design element I really don’t like is the Explorer headstock-I think a Flying V headstock would look better, but Ted McCarty’s original sketch had the Explorer headstock, so they might ss well stick with it. It’ll be interesting to see how many of these they’ll sell. Looks-wise I’d rather have an SG.
I will buy one if/when they release a Gibson USA Special with p90's, dots, and a wraparound like the CS. Loved the look of the originals, these standards not so much.
Why dot inlays? That suggests a cheaper guitar. And a wraparound bridge would virtually prohibit the installation of a Bigsby (which is a must). I like P-90s though.
I'm guessing the rounded edges were extra machining & to keep costs down they compromised.... But I'd like to see a Theodore with completely rounded edges. We all have our preferences and with an open book design like this is, we have no great preconceptions of how a Theodore is meant to be. By 1957 Gibson were tooling up for humbuckers. I can imagine McCarty changing the original Theodore design to accommodate them very quickly - or offering Special and a Standard models (Special with P90s, Standard with Humbuckers). Also the change to Mahogany makes sense given Gibson had a ready supply of it as opposed to Alder, which may have been harder to source as Fender was in full production with Alder by then.
Like it, neck pup sounds great, bridge a bit too hot for me. Looks a fun and modern guitar even though it's from the 50s. A 3 pup version with a Bigby maybe? ❤
I like it! And I hated the custom shop versions, it’s a lot more versatile, I can experiment with different pickups and I won’t get that P90 hum and I like the addition of the stop bar tailpiece, baseball bat necks suck, also no pickguard looks best. Home run imo
So it looked way cooler and rock n' roll in your hands than it did on the table/hanging. It's still cool, but the intrigue of the specs of the custom shop intrigue me more. I just wish they did the 2-vol 2-tone on the USA as well.
Not a bad example but p90’s would maybe be a better option and a more rounded pick guard at the bottom and with the strap button moved to the base of the heel of the neck may help with neck dive
Next they can make a Theodore Jr., with 1 pickup. Then a Special with the humbucker and a p-90 or 94. Then they could get really ballsy and do a Custom with 3 pickups. Just like the Les Paul and the SG family. Honestly, I was unimpressed with the outrageously priced Custom shop model. This one, at its price point, is MUCH more attractive and desirable.
To me it just looks like they have a standard 2HB stop bar template and change the shape a bit. It’s not very interesting TBH. Maybe there aren’t any new shapes out there and they’ve played with the electronics in the past but Gibson are stuck in the 50s.
I like that pickguard a lot. Wish the Standard had volume and tone controls for each pickup like the Custom Shop version. I'd like to see one of these with a B5 Bigsby installed.
You have a couple of good ideas there, Austin. The brighter floral colors would allow these guitars a unique appearance, while the BFG-style pickup configuration would give the axe a rare sound. Could be that the combination of features would prove compelling to many players!
pink: since day one of the original release i have thought the Theodore would be awesome if it came in a variety of hot colors. since it's a solid slab i'd think it could come in a variety of pickup configurations as well. ultimately i'd think the Theodore could be huge if Gibson would promote it and get them into famous-named stars' hands. they're so cool.
Bringing it with that festive colours sure match the shape vibe, and will draw more players for it, since it already modernize with modern tailpiece rather than wrap around bridge and humbuckers. I just don't get it why they simplify that control knobs? I would love to have diffrent tone knobs for each pickups to set the sound on my amps

I WISH they’d do this with a Les Paul: thin mahogany body, natural finish, two humbuckers with just two knobs, TOM bridge + tailpiece, and a regular neck. The headstock I’m fine with either this one or the 3x3. I’d buy that in a heartbeat!
Absolutely LOVE the way these things sound! Great demo, Trogs! Also, since these are slightly thicker than an sg, do you think it would be easier to get one with a Floyd Rose? I bet that would be awesome!
I still prefer the Custom Shop version, but not the price. I was disappointed that the USA version was so different. I'd be more OK with the USA version if it had P90 pups and the wrap tailpiece.
I was thinking a pickguard similar in style to the SG elites have . Not a batwing just the partial swooping pickguard style that really covers littl real estate on the guitar . But theres also something like Epiphones Crestwood , Wilshire or Coronet models pickguard. Not exactly like them though. Speaking of im still considering getting a Crestwood if you're interested in reviewing it. I judt have to get with you and i think its Sweat Water that has them. I also thought that maybe they could paint these in some of the new colors they eent withbon Les Pauls. Or some translucent colors.
Just wanted to share that in case you do want to add the additional volume and tone, CTS does make the smaller diameter 500k pots that will fit in those cavities
I like the Theodore Standard! I want one in Cherry Red. As for the pickguard, I wish Gibson would have just omitted that. I thought the guitar looked better after Trogly took off the pickguard (definite NO on the Les Paul pickguard!). Pickups sound pretty good, and the weight seems right too.
I saw the instagram ad from Gibson for this and thought it was some weird Epiphone thing and scrolled, but went back to find it and lost it. When I found it again it grew on me and I thought it was their coolest thing besides the V.

Yes being from the Netherlands It looks like a tulip to me.
I thought the same thing, maybe that's why I'm drawn to it. It resembles my old Teisco that I started out with long ago.
As a 1957 design, it would predate the Teisco. And Rickenbacker had similarly-shaped guitars in the mid-1950s.
I do wonder if there was some inspiration. Maybe Teisco got a hold of some of these design drawings.
The 57 classics sound really good.
