I like how they act like Tom’s voice is horrendous, and then have him sing twice and it’s literally more bearable than half the voice performance majors were back when I was studying to be a music teacher.
I know I’m late, but, right?!?! How come there are so many people, especially online, that claim to be “bad at singing” and then you hear them and you just get angry at them for thinking that.
And you've heard our voices on the "Mystery Biscuits" jingle, and Matt's "Colonial Clenching" the other week. But that's not trying to do a proper vocal number! -- Tom
Tom, you don't sing that badly. You have pitch sustaining problems, but that could be worked out with a couple lessons on the basics (maybe just RUclips ones on breathing and tension). You can at least hear pitch and match it, and you know how to make the tone sound good. You're much farther ahead than anyone I would consider bad, let alone torturous. --A vocal music major.
And here is some of Matt singing: "Jay Foreman, Singing, and Syllables" "Ten Illegal Things To Do In London" - from the depths of the old Matt and Tom videos
Matt's describing either shyness or embarrassment. I've seen the same thing with people that always pull silly faces for photographs, and those people that try to make jokes rather than interacting normally. I wonder if there is a collective term for this, "deliberately doing it disastrously to defend against disappointment".
As a singer and a professional voice teacher, Tom, you're FINE. If you feel a little shaky that's totally fair but you've got a strong core to your sound and a great timbre. If you took a couple of lessons or just practiced on your own for a bit (it's a muscle and needs to be worked out!) then you'd be lovely! I'm sure any choir or community theatre group would be thrilled to have you.
I don't normally plug my work on other people's channels, but since Tom specifically mentioned at 1:35 that he never learned music theory and wishes he had, I figured it was worth mentioning that my channel is all about music theory if anyone (including Tom!) wants to learn more!
For a second I thought "ugh another self promoter but then i realised it was 12tone which means 12tone watches not just Tom Scott, but this channel with the bench and citation needed and the experiments. That warms my heart
I would like to point out that we have heard Matt and Tom sing actually, in the episode where they had 14 minutes of film left and do quick fire questions, they sing the "mystery biscuits" harmony
I saw the title and Matt & Jay's rendition of "Bodger and Badger" instantly replayed in my head. I distinctly remember thinking "he's got a pretty good voice, Matt does..." :)
It's 2022. Tom has received an actual vocal lesson and realized his vocal abilities are actually quite good thanks to his experience in broadcasting and presenting, just needs to perfect his technique. I, for one, eagerly await the release of Tom Scott's debut single "A Public Place 202X"
"La culture c'est comme la confiture, moins on en a, plus on l'étale" -french proverb "Culture is like jam, the less you have, the more you spread (it)"
Holy crap Tom, you actually sing well! this coming from a multi-instrumentalist who took classical singing lessons for about a year singing in multiple concerts and has done karaoke for years.
This brings back NextUp memories of karaoke. Tom, you, put on a great karaoke performance, so I guess your strategy paid off (or was that RUclips paying for drinks).
2:19 Haha, saw the recommended video, and I knew it had to be that! I really love that song; for some reason, Grieg is my family's favorite composer! ... if having a family-favorite composer says anything about how musical our family is!
I remember learning We didn't start the fire by heart just for the impressiveness of remembering all the lyrics. With a friend from school. Good times.
I've always been like Matt, until recently. I uploaded a video of a song I wrote onto my channel last week, and all my friends in real life were really surprised because they had no idea I could sing, because I have literally never properly sang in front of them.
Everyone can sing, it just depends on how well! And honestly Tom, your voice is pretty good and with some training you could really improve. Just 3 or 4 lessons could give you some great ground work :) - A University Choral Scholar
All you have to do is listen to the Mouth Moods album way to many times and you will have most of the lyrics but they will be in way the wrong order and you won't know how to sing it on beat because you've only heard it mixed with Smooth by Santana and Smooth Criminal by Micheal Jackson
Choir was my favourite subject at school when I was 16-18. I was decent in the soprano section, but no-one in their right mind would make me a soloist.
Having taken a break from driving anything for a couple of years before jumping back into a manual car, I can say Tom will be just fine if he needs to drive a stick shift.
In my experience based on one time, I have no problems singing along to most songs I know after having vodka. Before that, I don't even want to show what's on my playlist.
Listen, I am essentially a professional insane perfectionist - and a massive music lover - and I say that from what I've heard in various videos, Tom's singing is... actually not bad!
As a lazy person I have to say it's always too late provided you have yet to exhaust all procrastination opportunities. Which coincidentally is why I'm watching Matt and Tom right now in the middle of my A-Levels.

I'd still love a full version of it.

He does have a really distinct voice, it'd be so cool to hear him properly trying!

I've certainly struggled a bit with this before. I don't know the academic term but I would call it fear of sincerity.

Matt: "Did you learn anything at school?"
Tom: "No."
