Matt Gray I just went down to the comment section to point that out, the fact that you already got that covered makes my comment pretty pointless so uhmmm... Mystery Biscuits for you. (btw using the MB Sound as Ringtone is lots of fun.)

at the age of 15 I accidentally wandered into into the front bit of a lecture hall (in Cambridge) where one of the professors from the team who discovered the higgs boson was explaining his work. there was nobody there except for a camera crew so I just sat and read a book for about an hour before it started, saw the entire thing, and was not questioned once. I had a similar experience at Versailles, years ago. I asked (in French) if it would be possible to take a tour in English, and they said to go sit on a bench at one end of this vast, empty hall. Shortly before the tour started, the guide came to collect me, and I found that I had somehow jumped an hours-long queue. I not only got an excellent tour, but got to practice my French some more when the guide took me round afterward to some spots that tourists generally never see. I even ran into the guide on the trip back to Paris--if I hadn't already been on my way to a romantic rendezvous, I could have had my way with him. Ah, youth is wasted on on the young!

That graph is really cool :) Tom's low scoring was responsible for most of the controversy (a reeeeally neat feature) - what's your MO, is there a certain criteria you were looking for those groups were lacking?
When they started talking about their predictions for that year I paused for a second to try to remember who won that year, it was Ukraine. Then they showed the graph, guess what country is all the way at the bottom... Yeah I also wasn't that much of a fan of that one.
+Helga Leech It's because most countries don't want to host twice in a row. Eurovision is incredibly expensive to host. You should check out the Father Ted episode "A Song for Europe" as it's based off what Ireland tried to do when they hosted it for the second time in a row (although in real life they won, in the episode everyone gives them nul points)
And here I thought I watched these out of order. I'm pretty sure I watched them exactly in order, because I started with the one where Tim put on his sweater, and ended on this one. :)
Similar story here - turned up 4 hours early for the Britain's Got Talent auditions and got ushered in to this room. Turns out to say thank you for being early they put us in the holding room with all the acts (like you see on TV), bought us lunch and filmed us interviewing them for Britain's Got More Talent. Just goes to show a little confidence can get you a lot!
Omg I remember now with Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede presenting! And I also remember that the Dutch contestant set up a temporary bar in Stockholm where the artists went and sang songs together, the videos of that were the best.
Like two years ago I was on a flight from Brussels to Tallinn and it was a completely clear day. And it thought it was amazing to see the Øresund Bridge! Also we were constantly following the coastline, so I could keep track exactly of were we were. I remember thinking Denmark looking a lot smaller when looking from a plane window. :P
I went to the Jury Final that year, which was a bit less hardcore but it did mean I got to watch the final twice! After a bit of queuing on a waterlogged concrete wasteland, we were let in and stood near the Polish butter churners. On the night of the Grand Final, we watched on a big screen near the town hall. Everyone was dancing in the rain - it was an amazing party atmosphere.
I havent't been even midly interested in the Eurovision Song Contest since it was called the Grand Prix de'l Eurovison de la Chanson (and even before that I was mildly interested at best). With the one exception of, I think it was in 2011, when Lena won for Germany. But to be fair, that was actually more an interest in Lena than in the contest.
+clf400 It was because there was a lot of variation in their ratings (the right-axis of the graph lists controversy as being the standard deviation of the scores that the three gave for each country). Croatia was the country for which their ratings differed the most.
I love how your graph, the jury votes and the public votes could not have had more disparity. It seems like a very controversial competition this year.
the reason that eurovision 2014 was in a old hall is because Denmark have a place big enough for that many people also, there was economic problems about the whole event since the people behind forgot to plan things like toilets, electricity,

OMG, i was watching that broadcast in the Foyer of a Hotel, on the Receptionists 14" TV in the (now) Park Hotel in Tiraspol, Transnistria. We were both shocked at the winning act. They are very conservative orthodox russians there. An LGBTQ+ bloke in a dress was the kind of thing to get one banged up in jail there. But his voice was outstanding. (i didn't spot the guys). The Hotel back then was the Classic grotty luxury 70's Soviet hotel, they even had Wi-Fi back then, Its been totally renovated to five star quality since then. It was a memorable night especially the wake up knock by the KGB the next morning at 5am.
Matt, you have an awesome taste in music. Do you have a last.fm? You seem like the person who would, being all into your statistics and graphs and things 😁
Eurovision is a place where music careers go to die. a artist/group who wins or even just participate generally is never heard about again after that and if they are heard of again its about eurovision.

They aren't silent, they're just waiting their turn in line.

I'm still stuck at someone taking one look at Tom and just reading the bridge knowledge in his eyes
