I don't play around I use FLEX as my number one tool except for the ones that they don't make and as soon as they come out with that Miter saw and table saw I have confidence that it is gonna be good product I'll get it
As a proud Flex owner I will say a lot of people are give Flex a lot of flak and compare them to current Gen models of tools like Milwaukee, Dewalt and Makita. The problem ends up being is a lot of the tools they came out with on launch are exactly that.. launch tools or Gen 1 tools, over time they will be more refined and improved. Just like every other company. As far as those batteries leaking, it was a good idea on paper to add the thermo gel to protect the cells from over heating but hasn’t worked the way they intended and they are aware of it and will/did make improvements on it with the new stacked lithium batteries. As well as with each new tool release they have gotten better with each one that comes out. I appreciate how you mentioned that you don’t torture test the tools, that you just use them on the jobsite every day which is exactly what I do and most likely what most people do with their tools. Which it’s the best test of time for the tools. All in all I don’t plan on switching to another brand because I see big things happening from Flex in the future and wish more people would come around.
The first gen of Milwaukee FUEL drills, impacts, sawzalls, and circular saws had a lot of warranty claims and replaced countless trigger and stator winding assemblies. The second gen fixed the motor burn up issues.
Suggested Corrections: - They ARE still selling the non-stacked, leaky batteries (look at Lowe’s and ACME, their 2 largest sellers’ sites). - While FLEX does replace the leaky batteries, they do NOT replace them with the upgraded stacked batteries, and.. - The battery replacement counts towards your 3 max lifetime battery replacements (per battery purchased, per the FLEX Founders’ Lifetime Limited Warranty) That said- great video!
I’m so happy to hear they are replacing those batteries. The first time I learned about the black sludge I had one leak onto brand new carpet. I was livid that day.
I wish there was a FLEX 24v vs FLEX 18v comparison, but I don't think that will happen as they separate the markets. But it would have been really interesting to see the difference and compare them.
I bought into Flex ONLY because I found a killer clearance price on a combo kit at Lowes. I'm VERY glad I did find such a deal, otherwise I would have never invested in this brand at full retail prices. These are AWESOME tools, with tons of power. Now I've since purchased the Reciprocating saw, Circular Saw, and angle grinder from sales at Acme Tools. I do have one battery leaking now, and I guess I'll see how easily they warranty that as all of my tools are registered. One thing I'm not gappy about at all is the fact that even though its a "Lifetime Warranty", you're only allowed three battery replacements. Barely 3 months after purchase, l have a leaking battery. So now for the rest of my life, I'll only get two more battery replacements. I'm not exactly happy about THAT part at ALL.
Milwakee, dewalt and makita are falling to the lower brands do to the fact that you can buy a less expensive brand that will do the job of the top 3 brands at half the price.
ive had multiple batteries leak but i just cleaned the black crap out of them and now they work just fine i still like flex tools and prefer to use them thank you for an honest review your videos helped me make the choice to try flex tools they make amazing quality tools and i guarantee they will fix this issue they have alot of great innovations unfortunately this was not one of them lol
I've got a bag with 22 dead Flex batteries in it. They replaced them all, and replaced the replacements. I think I have 7 that can't be replaced again. Once the gel leaks out, and makes a mess, they can only be charged a couple times before they croak. I had batteries leak from just sitting tools in the sun. They can't handle Texas summers.
Thanks for the honest review. Just picked up a Flex drill and impact driver combo set for a really good price. Was going back and forth whether to keep it or return and go with Dewalt. I’m like you and couldn’t care less how fast it drills, I need longevity and a great battery. Keep up the great work!
I've actually had one of the stacked batteries leak on me. Flex warrantied it out since I had it registered. They also mentioned the fluid is there to help keep the batteries cool and they said it was fine to still use them.
Thank you so much for your info on the batteries. The latest tools I got are the sander and the router & and am very happy with them. I have 16 of their tools & noticed 4 batteries are leaking. Because of that I felt discouraged about using their tools THEN I watched your RUclips video. I felt so relieved! Thank you!!! By the way, Flex has come out with a TABLE SAW. They'll release it soon. I saw that on Tool Review RUclips channel.
Jon I appreciate your honest opinion on this brand. I watched your first video when you got them last year and I thought at first you just promoting the brand since they have you them. Now watching this video I know you are a honest hard working blue collar guy like myself. Thank you again and I will be subscribing and be looking at your videos and switching from a 10 year veteran with Ryobi commercial / industrial electrician to Flex. 🤠
I have three 2.5Ah and two 5Ah batteries. One of the 5Ah batteries developed a visible leak. I opened up the battery to clean it out, and it was a mess. The issue is some phase-change coolant material which literally melts like chocolate. This material is corrosive, as evidenced by looking at its effect on the cell connectors. I opened up all my other batteries. They ALL exhibited melting, in various stages. I removed the bottom layer of this material but there is also another layer on top of the batteries and in between (5Ah) which are unreachable without a total disassembly. Even if your batteries do not exhibit leaking, the odds are the process has started if you have one of the older production units. One of the 2.5Ah batteries (which I never even used!) flashes all LED’s and cannot be charged. It was one of the most gunked up ones, so I’d have to believe this material is likely harmful to the battery if it seeps into certain areas.
My skil batteries fit both my gen 1 and gen 2 tools, all my tools, after i was told they didnt fit. I love my skil but im also jumping to flex and giving my flex to my son. Milwakee, dewalt, and makita owners are sour that you can get the same results for half the price.
I'm just getting into the flex brand, unfortunately it seems a little late for me, but I was wondering how your tools are still holding up? I'm an electrical apprentice and yes there are other top brands that cater to the electrical trade a little more I've been really wanting to build my tools around flex and just wanted your up to date opinion!
Rona is the o ly place near me that sells flex tools. I was there the other day, and they told me they may drop the brand, no one is buying them..........will have to see if that happens......
yesss bruhhh we need a mitersaw!!! but yeah had batteries leaked but still work jus fine so i wont even be replacing them unless they decide to crap out but havent yet!
I was about to buy the flex angle grinder until a lowes employee told me it's not a good idea. Mainly the recall on the batteries. No one is buying the tools. I was glad the salesman was honest. I was looking forward to the grinder because it has a variable speed, and it is super light did a little digging and found out the compa y was bought by a Chinese corporation... it explains why the quality dropped
The very first Flex tool set that I bought had three batteries one battery leaked. I called Flex they replaced the battery, it was at my house within 2 days. Flex is the to go to tool for me, if they make a tool that I need I will purchase it over another brand.
“Fake tool reviewer” lol cmon bruh. Everyone is allowed to create content on their channel how they see fit. No need to measure d*cks or compare or try and talk poorly on other channels. We’re all out here for the same thing. We use and abuse our tools on the job site as well so Flex is in fact a beast and gets the job done.
For everyday use, you can not buy better tools. Even the Stack Pack is the best when it comes to portable storage. I'm hoping Chervon will expand the brand to compound miter saws, self leveling lasers, etc...
As construction is my life. I love tools every kind of durable tools. I just find it hard to invest into a brand that you just spoke with so many flaws. It seems to early for a growing platform to have so many flaws. Leaking batteries. Chargers barely get wet and quit functioning these tools are supposed to be ip54 rating. Also the blower issue. I have been wanting to cross over. I also have alot of mixed feelings with Dewalt, but it's just on their expansion of their platform. So far, they have done me good, no issues. I have a little blower of Dewalt. I've had it for years and never had an issue. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait and see if they correct these issues to invest. Not all of us are going to be fortunate and have the luxury of Flex sending us tools every time one crashes. So i hope they pick up their game. I did see they came out with a miter saw looks preety slick. That might be the tool that draws me to the dark force. Thanks for the honest review.
Same problem with my blower, flex sent a replacement, no problems with the new one. Having an issue with the 110v power plug on the tower light. All other flex products I have are beasts.
@Chino0118 A not so fast phone call to customer support and they sent out a new one. They said they would email me a return label to send the old blower back. I never received the return label even after contacting customer service to tell them the return label was not received. So for now I have a second blower that works in turbo mode only. Hope that helps.
It seems like in Europe we are not having the 24V stacked battery technology (yet ?). Only the 18V. But I am sure glad I found Flex, because while I was doing research these last few months, I found, just like you said, that in every major brand battery platform you need a specific battery for a specific tool. WHICH TOTALLY DEFEATS THE EFFING PURPOSE of having a BATTERY PLATFORM. Man, that realisation made me so mad. Because that means, that you need 3 batteries per tool if you want to work continuously, which is a huge investment and a pain to store. As a lone DYIer, who likes to try her hand at repairing and building anything, I only want a limited number of batteries, like 3, that go with all the tools and one fastcharger. I will drink a non alcoholic beer (Jupiler 0.0 are the best) if I need to wait 10 minutes for a battery to charge. Some tools just make sense to have them on cord, as they will use a dust extractor that will also be plugged in and you are already attached to the vacuum hose , like track saw and sanders. But items like a recipricating saw, drills, blowers, multitools, drywall screwdrivers, lights I really just want to be able to use them anywhere without having to plug them in.
I've been searching for you....not 'you' specifically, but the voice of a contractor that has worked his perspective ass off, having experienced tools that break in the middle of the Job, at 3:30 in the afternoon, and you know you can have the job complete if everything goes according to plan, by 6:00 at the latest, only to have that critical tool die. No tool manufacturer wants their name tied to that experience. That being said, the Cornwell tool guy doesn't carry FLEX, (or I'd already have those tools in my own arsenal.😎) I am however on both Milwaukee FUEL Platforms. I don't own any of Milwaukee's woodworking tools, nor any of their new 'Forge' batteries. I do like that FLEX threw in their lot on pouch cell batteries instead of the 'old' lithium cell packs. I'm pressed when a successful contractor takes time out of his busy day to tell others who may be considering the purchase of a new tool to replace the old, but working ones.(I'd still ride around with the old, but still working ones for 6mons, or a year, until the new guys prove themselves as reliable as the crew.🤠)
The leaking batteries is the only problem iv had I had 2 of them do it and both batteries eventually stopped working but flex switched them out and iv had zero problems since
That’s exactly right. I don’t care if your tool makes 164 ft lbs and mine makes 149 I just need it to work all day every day no matter the temperature or if I drop it or get it wet.
For anyone viewing this in the future or presently… flex has fixed this issue. They did a recall on all non stacked lithium batteries at lowes, so every kit and individual battery that was not stacked lithium was returned to chervon. I don’t have a clue why acme tools is still selling those kits, but I wouldn’t buy anything that isn’t stacked lithium unless it’s the compact drill or compact impact driver. Those batteries are fine. The recall happened about 2 months ago and for all of you who do have battery issues they will warranty them out for new ones. Seems like a small bump in the road for a great tool brand
Also to add to the point that you mentioned about Flex dominating the battery market in power tools. I completely agree. Chervon (their parent company) KNOWS batteries and charger. I like to say to my coworkers and people online that Dewalt launched stacked batteries first (even tho there was marketing material from Flex showing stacked batteries months before Dewalt launched theirs), Flex perfected it with 3 batteries on launch and Milwaukee copied it.
You know this man is legit with those boots, they mean business. You I’m a detailer and I have there polishers/buffers and I do have a mini polisher that is battery operated. And now im wondering if that battery will work with my fan or any of my other flex tools 🤔. I need to go home and try it out .
Opened up my 2.5/5.0 batteries and carefully scrapped out that thermal stuff and put the rubber bumper back and work just like Dewalt/makita/etc batteries. The chip on the batteries have heat shut off so could care less about the gooooopp
I considered trying Flex or Milwaukee when I got a new impact but noticed they’re all Made in China. Figure I’ll stick with my made in Mexico Dewalt Tools over the alternatives
At least this brand backs up their product I bought 2.=12 amp battery from Milwaukee and both got damage internally on light use, less one year they did not even respond to my email, so I bought 9amp 3 .battery the same Milwaukee batteries on the high output stuff is trash absolutely trash I have many of their tools but will Be selling them just because of that. Thanks for the honest review
We’ll broken is broken is leaking or not The facts are there they do not back their product and phased the 9 and the 12 amp batteries off for Reason at least in my area I don’t see them much, trust me I wanted them to work but there something off with them I guess. 99% of my power tools are Milwaukee by the way.
If it ever happens....i will give them a chance to fix it. My milwaukee m18 failures were denied by milwaukee because home depot sold me 2 year old batteries. Not going back to milwaukee..... I love my flex tools. I am certain they will fix the problem. If not i also own a variety of Hercules tools. And so far i have been impressed as h*ll with them. Not doing dewalt or makita. Dewalts 1 year warranty is trash.
@@deluxepressure not really. I heard from a guy who had the same problem with makita batteries from HD. Old and high failure rate. I am wondering if they let quality go downhill during the covid era. Perhaps if production of new batteries stoped maybe they were letting failed or marginal batteries through that would have normally been stopped from sale by quality control? My recent flex and hercules batteries are working without issue. Another thing....milwaukee wants way to much for their batteries....they're gouging their customers. The 12ah has only increased in price by $20 but a 2 pack of 6ah batteries is up well over $100 from its previous price. They had a sale on a 2 pack of 8ah recently for just over $300. Thats 50 bucks off each and they're still 2x the price of hercules 8ah batteries. Im having really good luck with the Hercules tools I've bought too. They're not cheap and junky anymore since brushless came out.
They're dropping the cylindrical cell batteries, and replace warrantied cylindrical cell batteries with the stacked lithium? I'd like to see some citation to support those claims, because that is news. Full disclosure: I have all the Flex tools you have, but I bought them.
@@HankeyMountainGarage , they should never discontinue a battery. If your tool is in good working shape, you should be able to find a battery for it…. Screw Milwaukee
@@espencer83 I'm still missing where Milwaukee has done this? Haven't they been using the same ones for a good while now? Absolutely all manufacturers do this and eventually change battery technologies lol
Love how you complain about using certain batteries with certain tools then bragged how flex can run with the smallest battery then answered your own complaint about it by saying that you don’t know why you would. Exactly no one cares if that slim pack will run it because no one will do that. Lmao.
IT IS THERMAL GREASE. It cools the battery and extends cell life. Most brands don’t even bother with heat management. The first few times it gets hot, you might get some excess coming out. You can get other batteries with no cooling compound and they won’t last as long.
In Texas a 100 degrees is not even a hot day anymore. 105-110 is becoming the summer norm. I wish Flex would fix this battery leak issue. But I like their tools.

Already fixed
I live in south Texas. I don't leave my batteries in the heat, just asking for problems. 😮

lol i have had 3 5.0 batteries leak. they were all bought separate from tools, and i never overheated or got them hot. they leak right out of the box
I’m all in with Makita and I’m constantly surprised how tough the batteries are. Never had one leak in 7 years.

I've swapped out three batteries with flex not one was replaced with a stacked battery. Would be nice if they had done that
I am an M.I.A. ( Milwaukee in action ) person but flex doing their thing and the best support. GO FLEX !! wish I had your pack-out system.

Opened up my 2.5/5.0 batteries and carefully scrapped out that thermal stuff and put the rubber bumper back and work just like Dewalt/makita/etc batteries. The chip on the batteries have heat shut off so could care less about the gooooopp
I considered trying Flex or Milwaukee when I got a new impact but noticed they’re all
Made in China. Figure I’ll stick with my made in Mexico Dewalt Tools over the alternatives
Flex needs a 24 v framing 30 degree framing nailer no nitrous and a turbo
At least this brand backs up their product I bought 2.=12 amp battery from Milwaukee and both got damage internally on light use, less one year they did not even respond to my email, so I bought 9amp 3 .battery the same Milwaukee batteries on the high output stuff is trash absolutely trash I have many of their tools but will
Be selling them just because of that.
Thanks for the honest review
Never in 15 years have my Milwaukee batteries leaked
We’ll broken is broken is leaking or not
The facts are there they do not back their product and phased the 9 and the 12 amp batteries off for Reason at least in my area I don’t see them much, trust me I wanted them to work but there something off with them
I guess. 99% of my power tools are Milwaukee by the way.
@@pedrocervantes7561 the 9amp is no longer available but the 12 is
I’ve had two batteries leak. Flex replaced them no problem.
There is a problem if you can’t leave your batteries in your work van
Funny they told me it was due to moisture getting in the battery
Happened to 2 of mine after a jug of water opened up in the trunk. Was the only thing that changed. Wasn’t hot out
Has to do more with humidity than heat, but heat plays a factor
"I've been using all my power tools as well bruh "
Flex has alot to catch up with MILWAUKEE
Makita dewalt and milwaukee all get used in 120 degree deserts and artic tundras and they dont leak anything...
That is strange
Don’t compare Hercules to Milwaukee bro that just proves your not a professional
@@glenarseneau1231 neither is milwaukee considering the number of failed m18 batteries bought from them.
i just called flex after watching this video and they told me they wont give me the new stacked lithium but replace with the same model
They're dropping the cylindrical cell batteries, and replace warrantied cylindrical cell batteries with the stacked lithium? I'd like to see some citation to support those claims, because that is news. Full disclosure: I have all the Flex tools you have, but I bought them.
Truth bud
What you mean to say is “ I couldn’t care less” right ?
Awesome video!! But Milwaukee will always be the best!
Milwaukee will switch its batteries and then your screwed. Team flex all day
@@espencer83they haven't in a long while?
@@HankeyMountainGarage , they should never discontinue a battery. If your tool is in good working shape, you should be able to find a battery for it…. Screw Milwaukee
@@espencer83 I'm still missing where Milwaukee has done this? Haven't they been using the same ones for a good while now? Absolutely all manufacturers do this and eventually change battery technologies lol
@@espencer83the only battery that was discontinued was the 9 amp but all is m18 platform so not really seeing your point
Flex battery can’t take pressure
They better replace new batteries is their flaw they should no better mine are in my garage they still leak that messi shit
Nope no deal , I'm staying away from Flex
Yeah this is weird, it's because they get dirt oil and moisture in them and then the heat is enough to make it run off.
@jondawson Alright, but hear me out. What about FLEX bringing out their own version of a Portable Radial Arm Saw?!
Love how you complain about using certain batteries with certain tools then bragged how flex can run with the smallest battery then answered your own complaint about it by saying that you don’t know why you would. Exactly no one cares if that slim pack will run it because no one will do that. Lmao.
First
IT IS THERMAL GREASE. It cools the battery and extends cell life. Most brands don’t even bother with heat management. The first few times it gets hot, you might get some excess coming out.
You can get other batteries with no cooling compound and they won’t last as long.
But what if ur a flex fan queer
lol I can honestly say I’ve never seen a professional or DIY for that matter use flex, especially on the job site
