With reveals in general, people usually expect it to be huge. Tension filled. Like Annie's. But this one was just so casual. Out of the blue. It was so unexpected. And that's what makes it so great.
Exactly! It’s just..ok I know I’m biased, but as a writer/developer/designer, I still have never seen this particular reveal method used. And it was just...well...brilliant.
I would prefer that they didn't give you every hint before Reiner's mental breakdown down, It would be amazing if the scene keep going because you would be like "What the hell is happening? Are they for real", instead of "Oh ok, so they are the titans" because of the flashbacks. And then, in the next episode, the flashback of what happened in the last night
My favourite story about the Manga was from a reader who read pirated versions online. The reveal sequence happened pretty much the same way, and his initial thought was that a page or two were missing. After trying multiple different pirated copies of it, he finally bought the physical copies from a store to realize Reiner really just revealed his identity like that.
My favourite hint on Reiner was the one that almost nobody gets because it was a masterful double-indirection by Isayama. When Reiner wondered about the canned food. That it supposedly says "Herring". When they were interruped everybody thinks that this was a distraction from Ymir's identity. When in fact it was also a distraction from Reiner's identity. How on earth would Reiner know about "Herring", when he wasn't supposed to have ever seen or even known about the ocean?

SPOILER WARNING One possible solution: The writing shown was was eldian before the walls. It fell out of use some time later but continued to be used in the rest of the world. Why Ymir was able to read it but Reiner not can either be explained by Reiner's mental state at that moment or because the script was also obsolete on the outside for decades. Ymir is decades older, so she would still be able to read it. Reiner can't anymore, even though he would still be able to recognize it for what it is. It could also be that the writing was actually marleyan (the can was imported before the island was cut off), which could explain why it was totally forgotten inside the walls but not outside.

Everytime a new reactor watches the show, this is the episode I always wait for. Even if u already liked or loved the show up to this point, this episode cements it.

Eren's also a shōnen character in a seinen world -- his instant reaction to anything is with emotion first than with logic. (I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that all of season 2 happens over the course of 2 days.)

This is huge! In the Japanese original, there is a subtle indication that there is more humanity elsewhere (aka Marley) but if you only read the english sub, it misleadingly seems like Reiner was actually trying to end the human species.

Wills opinion of Erens reaction is not invalid, but the way it played out is not invalid either. We can never predict a persons reaction to everything. People can stay with their abusers for a long time just the same way as Eren can struggle to believe.
Btw in like episode 3 of season 1 when eren tells everyone about the titans the camera zooms out when he talks about the colossal titan and you can see bertolt looking at him and then it zooms in at Reiner when eren talks about the armored titan
It’s just hard to take in sometimes, that there are still series out there where EVERYTHING pays off, and EVERYTHING is brilliant. Death Note and Attack on Titan aren’t the only examples, but they are certainly possibly the best ones.

For me, I only had my suspicion on Reiner, and only after a second rewatch of season 1. Reiner looked the part of the Armored, and from that suspicion it just started getting more likely. His interactions with Annie were of note, but one of the main suspicious things he did was when he fought the female titan and somehow lived while firmly grasped in her hand. That's suspicious. The fact that Reiner took off his hood during the fight was suspicious. The fact that she knew to head to the center was suspicious. Couldn't say anything much about Bert until season 2 started leading up to it and your boy was sweatin bullets. I noticed that the second opening had hinted at Annie being on the opposite side of the fence when they show all the characters. But one subtle thing about the opening based off of that, is that fact that while Annie turns to directly oppose her friends, Reiner and Bert do a half turn as though they're on the fence or pretending.
Reiner quickly became one of my favorite characters as this continues, he and Eren both have amazing character arcs the author literally planned from the beginning.
Since you guys are rewatching episodes just go ahead to S1 ep17 When Annie got a grip on Reiner you can see Reiner blinking at Annie to crush him or make him go into her hands
I learnt who they were while Season 1 was airing. My entire friend group was watching AoT and spoilers weren't really a big thing to me back then. I even actively looked it up in the wiki, but never really read the manga. So the first time I actually witnessed the reveal was when Season 2 was airing in 2017. Despite knowing who they were, it was just chills.

I was reading the manga after the whole series ended, so I read it in bulk and had no time to look for details between each chapter. When the reveal dropped, my jaw literally hit the floor, and I had to read it several times to make sure it was legit. It is absolutely the greatest plot twist in the history of fiction. I'll die on that hill.

I was kind of spoiled on Reiner. I was watching the episode where the Female Titan "crushed" Reiner in her hands when someone in the comments time stamped that scene and said "if you watch attentively, that was pretty obvious". And here I am, curious what that scene was, watched it again and that made sus on Reiner. I was thinking about it before I move on to the next episode and I realized that Reiner looked like the Armored Titan (same hairstyle and body built) then Bertholdt being the Colossal Titan just followed through because they were always together and Bertholdt is the tallest among their class (colossal = tall). Since then I don't read comments of any show that I am watching unless I'm watching an anime that I have read the manga beforehand.
I love the way this reveal is done. Hints are dropped from season one getting increasingly more obvious. If you dont figure it out this reveal slaps you in the face. If you do figure it out, it still slaps you in the face because of how out of left field it comes

I learnt who they were while Season 1 was airing. My entire friend group was watching AoT and spoilers weren't really a big thing to me back then. I even actively looked it up in the wiki, but never really read the manga. So the first time I actually witnessed the reveal was when Season 2 was airing in 2017. Despite knowing who they were, it was just chills.

I was reading the manga after the whole series ended, so I read it in bulk and had no time to look for details between each chapter. When the reveal dropped, my jaw literally hit the floor, and I had to read it several times to make sure it was legit. It is absolutely the greatest plot twist in the history of fiction. I'll die on that hill.

I had forgotten and got curious whether his last name was spelled Braun or Brown, so I googled his name, and was immediately spoiled. The best part? This was like two or three episodes before I saw Warrior. If I had just waited an hour or so, I could have found out organically.

i don’t get why people call eren a b*tch just because his first reaction was to cry he out of all people has the right to be upset and shock two of the people he most bonded during training just confessed to be the titans that destroyed his home and cause his mothers death not forgetting that he is dealing with all the pressure of being a titan and still not fully understanding his power and knowing why he is a titan to begin with, people just criticize his reaction because they expect him to react like mikasa when is obvious that mikasa would react that way because she just blindy cares about eren and not anyone else unlike eren that cares for a lot of people

Yesss I was waiting for this moment!
I was kind of spoiled on Reiner. I was watching the episode where the Female Titan "crushed" Reiner in her hands when someone in the comments time stamped that scene and said "if you watch attentively, that was pretty obvious". And here I am, curious what that scene was, watched it again and that made sus on Reiner. I was thinking about it before I move on to the next episode and I realized that Reiner looked like the Armored Titan (same hairstyle and body built) then Bertholdt being the Colossal Titan just followed through because they were always together and Bertholdt is the tallest among their class (colossal = tall).
Since then I don't read comments of any show that I am watching unless I'm watching an anime that I have read the manga beforehand.
I love the way this reveal is done. Hints are dropped from season one getting increasingly more obvious. If you dont figure it out this reveal slaps you in the face. If you do figure it out, it still slaps you in the face because of how out of left field it comes
I already knew who they were, coz, I spoiled myself while randomly looking at the manga lmao. But I didn't expect him to drop THIS so casually like "hey by the way, i"m the armored titan" lmao. So I was more shocked by how he revealed it than the reveal on itself XD
