There was a pub called the BELINDA CASTLE in CANONBURY ROAD between Essex road and Highbury. It sat on a triangle shape of pavement. This was my grandmothers treat every Sunday dinner time with her Guinness. Pub owner put out cheese biscuits, small gurgins and pickled onions free to customers. Brilliant.

Many a memory in the belinda from 1987 onwards untill it became a yuppy pub and real islington folk pushed out of pubs and area not for the good thats progress so they say

My family n I came from Northampton road Clerkenwell EC1. Known as Islington now went to sir Hugh Middleton school infants then onto juniors then moved to 10 Alwyne villas when I was 7 . So I ended up in canonbury road juniors till eleven back to sir Hugh Middleton school till 15. Always felt at home . Had Flora Robson living in the house facing ours in alwyne villas that road was full of tv stars n film directors as you know Tony Blair lived in Alwyne road when he was a child n grew up to be priminster a few years back probably that’s why it’s gone all yuppie. From there we move into the flats at the back of town hall n school I think it was called William Tyndale my mum only had to cross the road to the off Liscence for my nana Guinness I think that road was called Halton Road the back of the Belinda castle loved the the hole of Islington . Great fun especially sat morning cinema in Essex road .

@@carolegroom5161 My family all grew up around Barnsbury went to Drayton Park and Highbury Grove School lived on the Northampton Estate top of Halton Road right opposite the Belinda Castle. My back window overlooked William Tyndale School. Another actress that lived in Alwyne villas was Noelle Dyson think that was her name she was in Citizen Smith and that comedy with Patrick Cargill.
I remember going to the early morning cinema at the old Carlton, in Essex Road, must have been late 60’s early 70’s

@@brianhewson7779 hi our front room window also looked out over the playground of the school aswell our block was called Chadstone house we had a corner 3 bedroom on 3rd floor no 33. The 4 blocks of flats in a square belonged to the Marquise of Northampton. When the owner passed away it was left to his Nephew . In the early 70s we went to Hong Kong for nearly 2 years came back n was given flat between mildmay road n Mathias road my girls went to the school at back of the flats. We then moved to NORTHAMPTON to live up on the eastern estate after 15 years came back this way to Dagenham cause family moved from clerkenwell to here.

Back in the day the Angel pub Liverpool rd was called the Green Dragon, what great nights we had there.
My uncle Jim was a green grocer that had a stall in Greenman st. and stored it in the Peabody yard, I'll never forget being 12 or 13 years of age when I worked for him for a bit of pocket money pulling it up the hill on Saturday morning, working on the stall all day then taking it back to the yard. I used to have lunch at the Seven Steps sometimes - in the 70's or 80's [can't remember exactly]. The building is still there, of course, 3 Highbury Place. It has been converted back into a private house (apart from the ground floor window). To be honest, I stopped going there because I began finding the occasional hair in my food.

Hi Brian Hewson , your correct they also lived in alwyne villas her husband was a DJ for the reggae clubs in london . We all seamed to be moved out approximately the same time into the flats the estate was selling the houses. It was only myself moved out my mother still lived there till they moved her into a smaller flat a couple of years later. She didn’t need a 3 bedroom being on her own. Still that was awhile back now.
