    I find that painting a cruise ship's hull a color other than white really helps with the aesthetics of her, as it breaks up the monotony of her superstructure and makes her look less comically tall, and having a non-corporate name helps me take her more seriously. I pretty much always point to the ships of Fred Olsen Cruises as examples of this: They share a naming convention, but one that is more subtle and helps her be defined as more than just "a ship owned by the company."

    • @TheGreatBigMove
      @TheGreatBigMove  7 месяцев назад +1

      I completely agree with your point about the naming conventions. I think it's great for a fleet to have a theme to its names, but it should be creative.

    • @Daniel_Huffman
      @Daniel_Huffman 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@TheGreatBigMove If you want a fleet with a corporate naming convention done right, look at the Union-Castle Line. Not only did they name their ships after physical locations rather than abstract concepts, but the names would still hold up even without the "Castle" suffix.

  • @wildsmiley

    I don't like the aesthetics of cruise ships.
    Having said that, Disney Wish, Disney Wonder, and Disney Magic are pretty easy on the eyes. Probably because they were at least partly inspired by ocean liners of yore. And nothing beats an ocean liner in aesthetics
    Hmm.. 🤔 No, that's it.

    The SS Norway 1980-1990 (before they changed the funnel color to all dark blue.) To me, its a beautifully unique ship, and especially with her 2 tenders added on her bow. Even with the added cabins above the bridge, it just adds a unique look. And these re-purposed ocean liners to cruise ships add a lot of unique features that wouldnt normally be on a modern cruise ship, like an enclosed promenade. Shes just such a unique and beautiful ship and thats why the SS France and Norway are my favorite. And another ship that I thought was really beautifully was the 2005 SS Poseidon, although obviously fictional, reminds me of the sovereign class of Royal Carribean

      The older ocean liner conversions, even though by that time 100% cruise ships, are a class of their own, since they were built as liners and carry the same features. SS Rembrant (former and latterly SS Rotterdam) would definitely have to be on that list too.

    Very good list, but to be honest cruise ships can't match the Golden Adge of ocean liners. I know they are two different type of ships but it's hard to beat the RMS Queen Mary or Queen Elezabeth and the SS Normandie -- "Mostly for her interior," the Normandie's funnels were a tad bit large.

Even if 4 of the Oceania and the 4 Azamara ships are identical and older, they're well maintained, classy, comfortable and look great in their white (Oceania) and black (Azamara) colors. The only nitpick I have with the Disney Wonder and Magic is that their front superstructure seems to be a bit bare and lacking in portholes. If they added some on the deck below the one with portholes, they could've looked like they took direct inspiration from the Lusitania and Mauretania but modernized gracefully.

    Well done.. I think you hit the nail on the head on most. I might have switched out a couple... Like I love the Marella Discovery 1/2 (old Splendor and Legend of the Seas,) and the Volendam/Zaandam...And while I get your love for Millennium, (I have sailed on the Constellation, and I do love those ships, but their sterns, well, maybe a bit more detail on them would have been nice.. Great call on Aurora and Norwegian Spirit. RCI does make the nicest big ships, I can even find a spot in my heart for the Oasis Class, thought they aren't my favorite.. Freedom class is very nice, almost a bit nicer than Voyager, (the extra length gives them a slight better profile...I might have included some of the older ones: Amera, Artania, Balmoral, and maybe one of the old R ships... Oceania cruises/Azamara, (but these may fall out of your parameter of "major cruise lines.. Over all though very well chosen..And as I remember, you were pretty spot on on the ugly ones too...;-)

    • @TheGreatBigMove
      @TheGreatBigMove  7 месяцев назад +1

      I did consider Legend of the Seas. But I think Voyager/Explorer are better looking. If Explorer had the length of Freedom, she would possibly be the most attractive large cruise ship.

      @@TheGreatBigMove I’ve not been on any Voyager class, but I do love the Indy. And I can’t argue that up till the icon, RCI has made probably the nicest big ships. When you see a Voyager ship alone they still look massive. Maybe they’ll stretch them. It did wonders for Song Of Norway and Nordic Prince 😎👍🏻

    I've only been on one cruise so far, and that was on the Allure of the Seas. I was really impressed by the technology and the interior of the ship... even got to take the backstage tour, but walking up to her at Coco Cay and getting a good look it hit me... that thing really is kind of ugly.
    By their nature cruise ships really are more hotels on barges than then anything like the classic ocean liners, and most of the ships on this video don't do a lot for me either, but I agree about the Celebrity Millennium and even more so the Disney ships. Cruise ships don't HAVE to look like the hotels gone to sea.

    SUMMARY: Oceanliners look better, more elegant than cruise ships because they don't have any (or hardly any) balconies that make many look like hotels on barges. End of story.

    Had you picked any ship other than Disney Magic (or Wonder) as the #1 I would have taken a great issue with your video. Still not sure about a few of your choices, I would have picked the Disney Dream or Fantasy over the Carnival ship or Freedom of the Seas - but thats about the only nit pick I have with your choices.

    • @TheGreatBigMove
      @TheGreatBigMove  7 месяцев назад

      Disney Magic and Wonder are almost in a league of their own among large modern cruise ships.

    • @erikjoha
      @erikjoha 7 месяцев назад

      No doubt. I've sailed on both, and when we've been in port next to any other cruise ship, I always look at them and go 'what a stunning ship' and it makes whatever ship we are next to look like a floating brick, or resort. It will be a sad day when those two ships are retired - though they are holding up well, I was on the Magic last year, and yeah - there was a few things that made you realize its a ship built in the late 90s, it certainly has been well maintained and the design has been timeless.
