EE Lawson... Its summer 1974. Driving really fast to nowhere with the windows down, The OMD playing on my mounted Tapedeck, the music blasting out of my old Ford Falcon 3 on the Column Car. God I loved that crap piece of car - it was total freedom to go anywhere I wanted - 2am down the Schuykill, over the river to the Jersey Shore ... Listening now this summer night I'm right back there now -... my Life entire Life ahead of me
...my dad used to spin this record when I was about 7 or 8...haven't heard it in 30 years, but never forgot over the years how bad ass it was & am glad I looked it up...
Heard this on the radio when I was a kid around 1970. Never forgot it and never knew what it was til just now. Googled what few lyrics I remembered, and here it is! Internet Rocks! (And this tune is great)
It's from 1974, actually. The band themselves formed in 1971 under the names of various groups such as Burlap Socks and Buffalo Chips. They officially became the Daredevils in early 1973.
What a voice. As far as I remember this was on the album It'll shine when it shines from around 1975. I bought the album because I just loved the song Jackie Blue and still do.
Damn! I still get goosebumps listening to this song!!! Saw the OMD in the early 80s when KY102 sponsored a show in Warrensburg, MO for $1.02! Great show and truly gifted musicians. ❤❤❤
I seen them a few times at the Medina Ballroom (MN) in the late "80s . It was kind of a small venu...The band sat to the table next to ours on their break., I always had a blast. I have some pics.
Their info page says Springfield Mo. but two went to Buffalo HS in Buffalo Mo. They met up with others from surrounding area. I remember going to their concert at the Buffalo homecoming dance. Too many showed up to fit in the gym so people helped drag everything to the football field. The stage was a hay trailer.
You did it again! I love this, bet my cousins down south do too! Thanks Terry, you got good taste there, keep em comin.I love OMD and never ever heard this song,it's so different from anything else they did xx
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils played a gig at our Methodist college in 1978. Their contract demanded a fifth of booze for each of the band members. However, this was against college rules. The show had to go on, so we provided the contraband under the table. It was fantastic from what I remember.
Me and my buddy Rich were playing darts in his basement one night. He said lets sneak out the window. I said what about your wife? He said Lets Go! So out we went and ended up at the West Ferris Arena in North Bay. O.M.D. played an awesome concert that night back in the 70tys. Lots of dancing and beer. After the concert Rich told me to drive up to his house with the lights off and he'll sneak back in. Rich slowly opened the door. The light came on and I saw the frying pan hit Rich in the head
They had a small resurgence when they were finally able to get the rights to their own songs and force the company to pull them out of moth balls. Featured prominently in the cowtown ballroom movie. They still tour some in Missouri especially although the members are spread out. I get to see them most every year.
@tompetty832002 The ozarks were a very underrated band and thier music was stunning. Jackie blue is my least favourite Ozarks song, but if you sit and listen to it and discover the deep story within the song, it starts to make sense.
First heard this song in mid-late 1974 on an A&M album. I always thought it was about a bootlegger moonshine/beer maker that has a speakeasy like entry to a "blind pig" type of party while disguising the shack like an ordinary small-town general store in Missouri or Kansas (the band was from Western Missouri, where the Ozark mountains are.) Probably with a rusty soda pop sign out front that reads anything from Coca Cola to Dr. Pepper, but inside they sell bootlegged beer & moonshine. I seen a number of old stores like that across the Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri state lines, as well as Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia (my dad's birthplace), Maryland, & Tennessee. The singer on this song (Steve Cash, Randy Chowning, or John Dillon?) sounds really sinister on this song, like a grizzled, drunken hillbilly hunter you wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of, but he will show you a good time on a Saturday night if you want some action. The owner of the store, E.E. Lawson, he is a hell of a man if you want some fun. 47 years after I first heard it, it still rings true.
I just saw a concert video of The Daredevils from 2012. It's the late Steve Cash doing those lowdown vocals and the blues harp solo. It was one of Steve's final performances before he passed away. It was pretty good, but Steve's vocals was inaudible due to bad mixing by their sound engineer. R.I.P. Steven Cash, the man behind "E. E. Lawson". Mystery solved.
hey what hqappened to them? do you have anything from them more recent ? the drummer was cool! i like this song but i was a bigtime "jackie blue "fan too
I want a one or 100 nights with any of the OMD. I was 14 when I first heard them on the radio in 1970. Been in love all these years. Wonder if i could have more than one husband. A girl of 62 can dream.
To me, E.E. was a bootlegger of moonshine and homemade beer from inside a blind pig party disguised as an ordinary general store in your average southern areas from Ohio to Florida.
i am not an authority on the band. i bought time warp because i liked the cover and teh back and was pleasantly surprised with how good it was. the band is still functioning but to my knowledge though i could well be wrong they are not making new music. im not a big jackie blue fan, but to each his own.
I have forwarded this to numerous people, as it is one of the best songs ever written and performed. Nobody can play it on their phone. for some reason it is only available on computer. I don't get it. Technology man ... it's fucked.
Mild concussion or a slightly fractured skull is well worth it to have had the chance to have been to an O.M D concert. Maybe Rich shoulda asked his wife if she'd have liked to go with him in the first place.
Look up the lyrics: NO ONE can understand them. There are at least several versions. Someone needs to ask the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, but they can't understand it either.
