  • Dr Jonathan Witt joins Gareth Cliff and Kanthan Pillay to discuss the latest bill passed by the ANC government, regarding National Health Insurance (NHI) in South Africa, putting private health and medical aids at risk of collapsing to State level. Councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku from the DA then joins to discuss the R81b budget for the City of Joburg.

This is exactly the line in the sand I’ve been dreading. I am a young professional. I have zero desire to leave SA but always thought if the NHI happens, I will be forced to as you can’t make a plan around it. I hate the ANC and the people who vote for them and keep them in power. Just look what they’ve done to this amazing country and its people and they still want to make it worse. I hope they get to burn in hell one day.

Line in the sand...to do what exactly...run away and die in the West where exactly the same thing is happening. Open your eyes buttercup, there's nowhere to run to. Either you fight this here, or you are going to be prescribed suicide by a socialist healthcare system with no one around you to stand against it in 5 years.

I'm also a young black South African who's never wanted to leave the country, it's my only home, and these are my only people, but if ANC wins again next year, I don't think I'll have a choice if I want to secure my future😢

My son is currently in the UK for the past 20 Yrs and has become a citizen. NHI in the UK are currently having major problems as we speak. how is it going to work in SA ?? This is a tikking time bomb waiting to destroy the medical aids and our doctor's will leave the country. This is a major catastrophe waiting to happen.

And they didn't manage to make a success of it even with a low employment rate and therefore high contribution per citizen! I lived in the UK for 10yrs and had private healthcare. It was called Pruhealth and apparently was based on Discovery :)

I was very stressed about the NHI. Then I got retrenched this morning. So I won't be around to experience the NHI myself. Good luck to all the rest of you. It really sucks to leave while the party is still going on 😢

My son in Perth waited 6hrs at the hospital with his young son. Said the doctor was good and the hospital was well cared for, but had to take off from work. That is the NHI.

The top 5% of people in this country are not going to stay and risk their lives on shitty medical. They are leaving and so is their money and skills. Say buh-bye to this economy.
