@@Federov88 first fountain pen i owned was a cheap Sheaffer, then got a Noodlers Standard fountain pen. Cheap pen made from quality materials in the USA. Still have it and use it 8 years later.
Thank you for experimenting and subsequently posting your results! I just ran out of the original ink in my V-pen. I love this V-pen more than my expensive technical needle pens by Kohi- noor & Rapidograph (which i bought 50 years ago for drafting class) because when I use the waterproof ink in them they both seem to dry up while i am trying to sketch and they get clogged up by the fast drying varnish in my waterproof ink and i am constantly dismantling the Kohi-noor & Rapidograph pens to clean and I usually manage to damage the tiny needles. I was going to try waterproof ink in my 60 yr old refillable Shaeffer fountain pens but the pens cannot be taken apart to clean and the ink chamber has very small capacity. So finding your instructions is the perfect solution! Thank you, Teoh, for sharing! I have lots of fountain pens because that is what people my age used before the invention of ball point pens ( yes, i admit to bring THAT old😥. My fountain pens are older than 60 years old and are a joy to use. Pity they don't make good reliable things like they used to. Thanks again, Teoh, for also sharing all your Urban Sketching info and reviews! It is a pity most people use cheap, wasteful, disposable ball points, many of which blotch!!
My cousin bought me a V-pen two years ago, and I don't like throwing away usable things :) so I learned to take it apart. I had a hard time, as Teoh shows it can be difficult to remove and replace, but it is achievable. I refill mine with regular fountain pen ink (I don't need waterproof), I just like to use different colors in the pen. For a "cheap" pen, these write very nicely. Thanks for the video - I am happy I am doing it correctly! :)
buy a pilot mr (universal cart,) ot pilot metropolitan (proprietary) , same brand , better writing. Or a faber castel- iwrite... or a Jinhao 992 for a couple of $. Last one is really nice.
To reduce risk of damaging the pen, try the "vacuum syringe with coupling" method in youtube. The pens will last indefinitely until one makes the mistake of forgetting to cap the pen. One the dried ink clog up the fiber feed, it's a gonna unless one can find a suitable solvent.
Warning: Don't use pliers for this operation. Run the tip and section through warm water for a minute, grip the nib between your fingers firmly with the help of some rubber material, I use rubber gloves for cleaning chores around the house, and pull it out this way.
this works with the vast majority of single use liquid ink pens. technical drawing ink and diluted inkjet ink (ink/water 1/5 - 1/10) work excellent. if they clog, it's almost always the felt-like wick, feeding the ink to the nib isself. on many you can pull it out and rinse with water. let is soak in alcohol for an hour, if necessary.
I am going to purchase the set of Varsity pens now that I can reuse them. I'm starting quite a collection of good budget fountain pens thanks to your reviews. My drawings & handwriting are improving very quickly. Thank you so much for inspiring us with your beautiful sketches & sharing your expertise with products with us.
Thanks for showing. This nib on the VPen is really good, it's so smooth. But it's a shame to produce so much plastic garbage for a fountain pen. This is a great method to reuse it several times. I'll use Herbin ink with it, or Rohrer & Klingner. For me it's not about the money (the ink is numerous times more expensive), but to use this excellent fountain pen (!) more than once and producing less garbage.
Excellent point! It breaks my heart to know that so many people are okay with using disposables like no tomorrow, where there's a simple solution to reducing/reusing.
It's shameful that pilot and other manufacturers are so willing to continue making disposable plastic pens. Specially in the fountain pen market where you don't have to worry about this horrible problem that is disposable plastic products Around 100 billion Bic disposable pens have been produced, how many of them do you think ended up polluting nature? A lot of them
I worked in a shop that sold "fine" pens. Pilot Precise pens are smoother-writing, and have a more consistently clean, dark, and sharp line than any Waterman, Mont Blanc, etc. If you want some expensive plastic junk, though, grab yourself a Mont Blanc.
Ha Ha Ha! Thanks for sharing! I have been trying to refill the same disposable pens as well, but was unable to extract the nib part from the handle. Now I know how, thanx to you! So good to hear I am not the only artist trying to save a buck or two! I think the waterproof ink I use has a tiny bit of shellac in it, which would make any clogs inside the nib housing block the flow of ink. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol can dissolve shellac (it is quite inexpensive here in North America, and probably out in Singapore, too?). You may want to soak your nib in it...the same way you would clean a printer head...place a bit of rubbing alcohol in a smaller snack sized ziplock bag with your nib head and shake..allow to soak overnight. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. Right now I think I have a life time supply of ink & pens, miniature watercolour palettes, tiny water bottles...
Using pliers is an excellent way to crush the feed or bend the nib, ruining the pen forever. Use a thin sheet of silicone rubber or use nitrile gloves to grip the pen and nib. Gently wiggle, twist, and pull the nib and feed, gripping the top and bottom. Be persistent but not overly aggressive and it will happen.
I’d also recommend wrapping the nib and feed in tape, using a little extra to make a flap, then just pull the thing out. I used that to remove the nib from a wing sung.
If the v5 is clogged after some refilling, maybe it helps to take out the feed and soak into a cup of warm water overnight. This way I cleaned completely a very old rollerball and then refilled it.
A slightly easier way would be to drill a small hole in the back under the end cap you could then fill the end with silicon then whenever you need to refill you push the needle through the silicon and inject the ink into the pen then replace the end cap. I imagine pulling the pen apart out the front like this will eventually break the abs plastic or stretch the pen housing so it comes out easier and easier...
if you plug a toothpick split down the middle of the felt core of the varsity feed, you can put it in a Platinum Preppy to get the best of both worlds. Smooth Vpen nib and refillable Preppy body. Likewise, if you put the Preppy nib section into the Vpen, it's a slightly looser fit that you can pull out with your fingers (but is still a snug snap so it doesn't leak) so that it's much easier to refill.
FYI, a rag soaked w/ acetone will remove all of the markings from the exterior surface of a Varsity pen barrel, turning it into a clear “demonstrator”. It takes a bit of rubbing, but it’s less than a 5-minute project.
Best to wear disposable rubber gloves. Also, rather than using tissue, wrap a thick elastic rubber band or piece of rubber anti-slip material around the nib and feed. Some people remove the nib separately. Yes, be sure not to overfill (you can also use an eyedropper instead if preferred). Once it is filled, allow the pen to stand, nib facing downwards for five minutes or so before using. Overall, this is not an easy procedure, but very satisfying when it works … one less piece of plastic going to landfill!
Thank you! I really like your videos - I have watched a bunch of them, and subscribed to your channel. This was very helpful, because two of my Pilot Varsity pens are almost out of ink, and refilling with waterproof ink is going to be GREAT for my watercoloring. I have been using micron pens, but sometimes a nib is preferable to the softer tip. I think you are an amazing artist, by the way. I love your street scenes especially.
I tried this method with an old and scratchy V-pen I had saved hoping one day someone as curious and able as you would come up with a suggestion. THIS WORKS well with Noodler's black "Bullet Proof" ink! I use it for sketching outdoors. The reservoir contains a reasonable charge and it won't be a big deal if I damage or loose it. Many thanks
Very cool, I got this pen to learn how to use fountain pens off of and it's nice to know I can use inks to replace it like my Sakura microns. In the meantime, I'll just use it when I use alcohol markers and poscas (poscas don't cause smearing, weirdly).
The Parker ink is good but the uniball's pre-filled ink is much more better and viscous. Struggling to find some deep ink like it, if you know any ink which is as much dark as uniball than please suggest.
nice video... i am using both the v & hi tec beside my fountain pens collections as a backup. last 2 years got the new pilot hi tec carriages refill pens
The uni-ball pen is a great pen. Glad that you mentioned in the video. I tried to refill that pen once with the Rotring ink but for some reason, the pen got clogged. I think I might give a try to Pilot VPen.
+Edrollable Yes, you are right that clogging in this case id mainly because of the Rotring ink. Clogging becomes inevitable just after the refilling the pen and first use. However, as +Teoh Yi Chie mentioned that as the Uniball Eye/Vision pens already come with permanent ink that there is no need to refill it with a permanent ink. Also, I feel that these pens are reasonably priced in India right now. Hoping, this helps.
Hi. I have a Pilot Hi-Tecpoint V7. I want to refill it. What type of ink I must use? I see in your video you are using another brand ink (Parker). I can get this brand's ink in my country, but, what should I see to chose a prooper ink? Thanks you!
I have one question: Can you put the pilot varsity nib into the pilot hi-tech point because I want to put a fountain pen nib on my pilot hi-tech point rollerball pen.
Teoh Yi Chie Well, I tried yesterday, and it was so easy, I just used my teeths to separate the tip from the tank, and the fingers to couple them again. My model is the V5 Precise.
Just did this with my v pen. Went quite smooth; I put tape on the nib, and didn't need pliers. I put Winsor&Newton Indian ink in it. Read somewhere that the v pens have quite a robust feeder system that tolerates indian ink (turns out it doesn't, see edit below). The pen works for now, and when it cloggs, no great loss ( would not put this ink in my normal fountain pens, I am planning to try out specially formulated water resistant inks for those). Wonder if it is prudent to keep the pen in a closed container with a water sponge to keep it from drying out...? Edit, DO NOT USE INDIAN INK🤣. The experiment failed. First It looked pretty good, good flow, nice lines, and I thought it would be a good way to have a fountainpen on the go with a water resistant ink. Well that didn't last long, it stopped writing pretty soon after the refill, I assume it clogged.
Ha, the experiment is ongoing; I wrapped soaking wet tissue around the nib and waited an hour, lo and behold, it started up again🤪. So I might be able to use it, but I think it is rather unreliable.....
I just did it in another method in my v5.Dont have get the nib out.J ust twist open the writing part, you'll find the disposable cartridge.Fill that with ink.

Hi Teoh another great vid! Always hated the black ink the V pen is filled with with a passion. While the blue ink seems fine, I've had quite a few with the black ink in them and it always turns pink and bleeds right through the note paper only after a few weeks for some very odd reason but love the nib so kept the empty pens in the hope that one day I'll find an easy way to fill them :) Thank you!
After refilling the ink is overflowing from the pin point of the pen, do you have any remedy to resolve this issue, if yes do let me know so that it will help me a lot
I've always wondered - why do the Uni Vision Eye pens have a cap at the bottom end? What is the purpose of it? I opened it, and it looks like an end of an ink cartridge - is it meant to be refillable? Thanks
Teoh, now i start to use Platinum Preppy pen 0.3 for drawing, remember you not recomended to use a pigmen ink in a fountain pen. The best ink what i see in your videos is Noodler's Ink, but not to sale in Russia((In our markets only Pilot, Rotring and Kuretake ink) But Vpen you refill a Rotring ink.I tryed refill this ink in my Pilot Hi-Tecpoint, its good. May i refill my Preppy with Rotring, when all my preppy cartrige is over?( I tried Pilot ink, but its not waterproof) Thanks for answer))
+fred flint Not sure about Rotring in fountain pens. Other waterproof inks are Sailor KiwaGuro, De Atramentis Archive Ink, De Atramentis Document Ink. You may be able to get the Sailor ink from Japanese sellers on Amazon.
+Teoh Yi Chie. bro which company rotering ink you use and what is called a rotering ink can you please sopve my query. can we use printer refellling ink to refill this pilot ink will it ink will dark and work properly on this pilot pen

Very useful video. If I might suggest: your videos would be much better if you did not discuss what you are NOT going to explain. IOW, it is not useful to know about the pen you did not show how to refill, or even why you wanted to use a different ink. The point of the video was HOW to refill the pen. You did a great job there.

While the blue ink seems fine, I've had quite a few with the black ink in them and it always turns pink and bleeds right through the note paper only after a few weeks for some very odd reason but love the nib so kept the empty pens in the hope that one day I'll find an easy way to fill them :) Thank you!
+Brian Quinn They use dye ink so the colour may actually "break"
Teoh, what kind of surface is your desk? It looks like a unique material.
It's just a large piece of cardboard with black paper pasted over it. I got the cardboard in yellow and red colours also. LOL
It would be cool to find a tablet top that's like that though, because cardboard is not durable.
i also like to reuse my pilot pens, but haven't found good quality ink, so it doesn't write consistently and is very light
I don’t refill anymore since switching to fountain pens
Excellent explanation.
Did pilot v7 hi teckpiont really refilable
this is a very very helpful video
thank u !!
+Santosh Dhawan Thanks 😁
After refilling the ink is overflowing from the pin point of the pen, do you have any remedy to resolve this issue, if yes do let me know so that it will help me a lot
I've always wondered - why do the Uni Vision Eye pens have a cap at the bottom end? What is the purpose of it? I opened it, and it looks like an end of an ink cartridge - is it meant to be refillable? Thanks
It's just a design thing. Not meant for refill.
I forgot to mention that the metal nib of Vpen may slide easily out of its place, so that it may not be harmed during the refilling process
Should I use a ballpoint pen ink to fill a hydrographic pen ink?
Ballpoint ink is oil based so they don’t work well in other types of pen.
Sir,Can we use use Parker pen ink to refill pilot v5? Thanks in advance
Yes you can
Teoh Yi Chie love from india
I do this all the time. But it’s better to just get a refillable pen. Pilot metropolitan is 10 bucks on amazon.
Go for made in usa, Noodlers Nib Creaper is only 22$
Can I refill my Rotring tikky graphic pigment pen like this??
Probably. But it is way too much effort. Get a cheap fountain pen
Teoh, now i start to use Platinum Preppy pen 0.3 for drawing, remember you not recomended to use a pigmen ink in a fountain pen.
The best ink what i see in your videos is Noodler's Ink, but not to sale in Russia((In our markets only Pilot, Rotring and Kuretake ink)
But Vpen you refill a Rotring ink.I tryed refill this ink in my Pilot Hi-Tecpoint, its good.
May i refill my Preppy with Rotring, when all my preppy cartrige is over?( I tried Pilot ink, but its not waterproof)
Thanks for answer))
+fred flint Not sure about Rotring in fountain pens. Other waterproof inks are Sailor KiwaGuro, De Atramentis Archive Ink, De Atramentis Document Ink. You may be able to get the Sailor ink from Japanese sellers on Amazon.
Thanks!
Hello Teoh! I was wondering if you can use Rotring drawing ink to refill the VPen
+Cryztofr Mendiola I think that's what I did in this video
Teoh Yi Chie Ok thanks! I thought it was a different type of ink :)
what is a rotring ink the ink which you used for refilling v pen was of parker
+MN SINGH I reused the Parker bottle. It's filled with Rotring ink.
I have another idea. I'll drill and thread an. M3 hole on the back and close it to plug it up!
Which ink to use to refill for pilot V5 Hi-tecpoint and where can I buy?
I use Rotring ink. But I don't refill these pens anymore. Uniball Vision needle point has waterproof ink.
how many times a v5 hi techpoint can be refilled?
+Shubhau Pal Not sure about that. I stopped refilling them after I discovered the Uniball Eye/Vision.
Teoh Yi Chie in my country, using a pen like uni ball vision and throwing it away is costly.
Buy Mitsubishi Uniball-Eye Needle. They are waterproof as hell.
Is it possible to do this with a Rotring Tikky Graphic drawing pen?
Not sure. But nowadays I just recommend getting a cheap fountain pen which is more convenient unless you need a very specific nib size
thanks.. it was really helpful...
How can i get ink bottle and which company
did you use the same ink for the needle point ? Thank you.
+juan luis huerta vivar I use Rotring ink for both. But I don't refill these anymore because there is the Uniball Eye needlepoint.
+Teoh Yi Chie. bro which company rotering ink you use and what is called a rotering ink can you please sopve my query. can we use printer refellling ink to refill this pilot ink will it ink will dark and work properly on this pilot pen

vペン使い終わったらつけペンにしてたけど詰め替えられるんだなぁ
only question can i use pilot pentel marker refill ink as refill of my fountain pen?
I guess you can but I don't really see why you would want to do that.
+Teoh Yi Chie thank you for answer now i will surely subscribe you thank you
Would the pens work if refilled with India ink?
India ink is heavily pigmented and will clog.
@@teohyc that's too bad, Rotring ink is not easily available in my country, anyway thank you. Greetings from Mexico.
Hi!
How long does the hi techpoint ink last, the preinstalled one?
Depends on the usage
i tried some Rohrer & Klingner fountain pen ink to refill the pilotV5 but the flow is very poor, stops after a few lines.
That ink may be too thick. Just get a cheap fountain pen to use. Like Pilot Metropolitan or Platinum Preppy
Is this experiment every time sucessfull?doesn't it ruin the pen or damage it ?
It may clog the pen in the future. I've switched to using fountain pens. It's easier to refill
What kind of Rotring ink is this? Their normal black fountain pen ink?
Just the normal Rotring ink that's meant for technical pens.
Nice video keep it up
Shucks the first time I tried this it worked beautifully. This time I wrecked it....just couldn't get the nib back in properly!!! I should have heated the barrel up first to try to expand it a bit ....sigh. Back to ye ole faithful Kohi-noor and Rapidograpgh fountain pens!
if you refill and they don't work sometimes they get an air bubble in the filter and you can suck it out to fix this
how
There is nothing like this
*how to refill parker jotter refill ?*
Thanks. It worked!
Yo thanks buddy! Thank you for it
Very useful video. If I might suggest: your videos would be much better if you did not discuss what you are NOT going to explain. IOW, it is not useful to know about the pen you did not show how to refill, or even why you wanted to use a different ink. The point of the video was HOW to refill the pen. You did a great job there.
