Pilot Hi-Tec-C pen review - The Greatest Pen Ever Made

- A review of the Pilot Hi-Tec-C or G-Tec-C gel pen and why it's the greatest pen ever made, especially for artists. I really love this pen. Forget about ballpoint pens or brush pens, if I had to bring with me only one pen for drawing to a deserted island, this is it. My one pen, stationery haul. And of course, its a Japanese pen.

Hey thanks and welcome aboard!
wumbyu same here jfnfjsksjdnv,xmskf
I did not wake up today expecting a pen to be compared to an ak-47, but man am I glad I got to witness it
haha pen go brrr
LMAO
this machine kills fascists, am i right fellas
Pen is mightier than a sword... in our generation it's an ak-47
@@ChromaMoma bruh lol
his passion for this pen is otherworldly and gosh darn do i relate
This video is so validating 😂 No one understands how amazing these pens are. Or why I’m so obsessed with them. I have gone through probably about 20 of the black 0.25s. Incredible for school notes because of the precision! Can’t stop won’t stop hahaha
the ink, is so incosistent for mine
@@febu-chan463 same same i have to write at a weird angle even snapped one trying to increase ink flow
Pilot G-Tec is so popular here in the Philippines lol
Its a big deal if lost your G-tec here
I would hate to lose one
It's not lost, your friend just took it.
It's a big deal cause it's so expensive 😭
@@justinco7512 from where I'm from it's like if one of you owns one of these
Its a super big deal
To a point where people stealing it might be high lol
LITERALLY! HAHAHHAA
RUclips recommended your channel to me a few minutes ago and I’m already in love with it! 💕
Glad you enjoy it!
Saaame here!
Funny thing, I was drawing with this pen while I saw this video. When I first got this pen I really hated it. It skipped a lot actually and was frustrating to draw with. Now I live in the Netherlands and I think it was just too cold, I find that when I’m using the pen for a bit it gets smoother and smoother. And it’s summer now and it works perfectly 99% of the time ;D
I’m starting to really enjoy drawing with it ^w^
That's really interesting that that happens! I've never thought about that having summer all year round.
Yeah I was going to say.. this thing hard starts and skips all over the place all the time. Maybe it's just too cold here. It's so bad I never write a lot, so maybe I don't warm it up enough for use.
If the tip is 0.25 then it be a little bit ya know
I love the quick paced editing style of this video! I just watched the 12 hour sketchbook too. Subscribed!
Thanks for subbing! Welcome aboard!
I SO love hearing people geek out about pens. 💕
I am so happy youtube decided that I should see your channel today instead of recommending me ten thousand portal speed runs because I watched ONE. Great work, I'm excited to see more!
Thank you! Good luck with your Portal speed runs haha
Clicked play and then said “yup that’s accurate”
Just don't use them if you have notes that you want to last.I used them for my technical notes and after a few years some of the colours faded away and it's impossible to read what I wrote.
I’m lookin into gel pens because I’m a student pilot and need to write/log flight information, and I sure need them to last! Thank you for your comment! It was spot on for my case and I really appreciated it!
Bro I was here when you had 1k and that was only a week ago now you’re close to 5k wtf you’re a god
right?! one day later hd has 6.1k!! the youtube algorithm is on his side
Enjoy the ride!
Y'all, he has 42k now, this is wild
@@mouse8709 king of finnessing the A-rithm
When my old pens died I ordered some of these because of this video, and am absolutely not disappointed. The combination of smoothness and the ability to make fine lines is so, so pleasant. I'm a believer.
I got myself the 0.3 mm version, even after two years of usage it's still holds well. Because of the fine tip and large ink container, there are still a good amount of ink left.
First, Pilot has been producing some really quality stuff for a while. This pen is no exception. I use it quite often. There is, however one drawback, which I’m surprised you didn’t mention. You are correct as far as price and flawless ink flow, but for some reason whichever type of plastic they chose for the body does not lend itself to bending. I find the thin clip breaks off far too easily (or I’m far too strong and should not be permitted to handle small, pointy things) and annoys the doo-doo out of me.
I got some of these for Christmas because of this video and they honestly the greatest. I love using them so much.
Oh my gosh this is also literally my favorite pen of. all. time. I refuse to use other pens in class and the amazing thing is, I can use it for drawing. I also prefer the point c4 variant than c3 because the latter is a bit scratchy, and the ones I owned back then either dried out or stopped working after I dropped them once.
By the way, is it just me who has problems with the c4 refills? They're cheaper but they also produce much thicker and wetter lines when writing (to the point where the ink bleeds to the back of the paper) and it's really annoying.
Hmm I've never noticed a difference between the refills. Maybe there is a difference between the Hi-Tec and G-Tec ink cartridges.
Ive got broken refills too, u can troubleshoot them buy letting them bleed on a tissue. I think the inks gone bad at the tip but a few drops of ink will do them just fine :)
such a wonderful review and a quality tribute to Pilot. Great content too.
I used my hi tec c coleto for years for lovely color coded notes and it was my favorite pen. It recently got run over by a car :( but i bought a new one and i’m waiting on it. I love the multi pen so much!
I bought this pen on accident because I thought it was a similar one and then after two days of owning it I promptly ruined it by bending it in a 90 degree angle.... But then tried to write with it and it worked flawlessly. 2 months later and the pen and I are buddies for life! Thanks for making this video!
Haha that's an unfortunate origin story. I'm glad you like this pen too!
as a left hander i have been using ths pen myself too for as far as i can remember , and i still use it becuz of it being so dang priceless, and so good, until 9th grade id been having problems with finding pens that suited my left handed style of drawing/writing, and this one pen that i got as a free item with some other purchase changed my life.
to be honest im glad that such a review exists of such an underrated pen. This review might just prove usefull for all those lefty's scratching their head with their dirty ink soiled hands.
;)
this channel is my favorite find of the year. Please keep it up!
I just subbed and am currently binging your videos! I actually bought this pen a month ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. It has a nice fine line and is really reliable. To anyone who is looking for the next pen to try, this is definitely worth a shot!
You are a believer
Don't get me wrong, gel pens are my number one essential stationary item for uni. But anything art/sketching related IT HAS TO BE THE PENTEL BRUSH SIGN PEN!!!! From the teeny tiny lines to the thiccc lines present in that ONE brush pen... UGHHH ITS SO GOOD BUD.
I do love me a good brush pen. Shame the pentel pocket brush refills are so expensive 😭
Taking the cap on and off is such a nice sound.
The smoothest pen I use ♡
i'm so glad someone is as obsessed with this pen as much as i do
WAITTTTT IM CRYING MY GO TO IS ALSO THE 0.4 LIKE IT'S SOOOOO GOOD i swear me and that pen are soulmates ALSO WHEN YOU SAID YOU HATED IT AT FIRST??????? ME!!!!!!! god i'm so passionate about this pen
cowboy bebop theme!! love it!!
was gunna say the same but you beat me to it
I stopped just as you said: "This is the greatest pen", and my mind completed the sentence as: "This is the greatest pen of all time". And you know what? I totally agree! This pen has been at my side for many years and it's always such a joy to use! And the refills are easy to come by, which was my problem with a pen I previously used (Xiaomi Mijia Pen) because I had to order them through the internet which always took way too long to arrive!
I love your videos i can’t believe how underrated you are
I appreciate that!
I went out to buy one after watching your video a few months back and I haven't looked back since. It's in my travel notebook so it gets thrown around a lot and it's line quality is still amazing👌
That is awesome!
I bought a few of these because I wanted a shorter pen, and it's by far the best gel pen I've ever used.
I am a pro sketcher for almost 30 years and working as an Architect and if u draw technical stuf it could be one of the good pens, but I prefer scratching pens due to the ruffness. or dry pens. It makes a nicer texture. if I want a line, I can print it and do it on a computer
The multi color version of the pen is awesome. For single color gel pens, the uni ball signo is my favorite. The muji gel pens are also great for their simplicity and cost.
One thing i do to my pencils, mechanical pencils and pens, is wrapping the part i grip onto with tape, since sometimes my hands hurts or slips out of my hands.
And wrapped tape does makes drawing more comfy and less stressing
Either way, keep up with the videos! Love your work already!
I love the way you say chippy thing and grippy part. I'm getting some.
I've been using this pen for a few years now, I love drawing with it
The soundtrack though 👌 I appreciate the culture/reference. Tank is just a beautiful song. Also, I just subscribed, I love ur videos. I have been binge watching them.
It's the best anime OP ever don't @ me
Can't even lie this video convinced me to buy one and I am not disappointed
You're gonna blow up soon I can tell. I subscribed. You're making me wanna keep pushing my art career forward so thank you and keep it up. 😤
You got this! And welcome aboard!
Love. This. Video. Gonna get this pen tmrw
when i was in elementary school, everyone was obsessed with hi-tec because it made our wiriting so cleaaan. ( our teacher graded our writing thats why).
Recently I bought the Hahnemuhle Sketch&Note book because of your 12-hour sketchbook vid lol. Now I'm gonna cop these too.
Pilot G-2 pens are also amazing. I'm gonna have to get one of these Hi-Tec pens next time and try it out. Looks sharp. I can't stand ballpoints.
I like the G-2 for drawing. With a water brush you can do some nice washes. The G-2 refill fits in my copper @TactileTurn bolt action pen.
My country worships this pen. It's a symbol of status in both school and work. It's so weird and validating to see a video dedicated to it
I basically fell in love with this pen and can't live without it, but now it's crazy expensive. It used to cost 2 to 3 euros here in italy, now it's more than 5....
Interviewer: How would you sell me this pen?
me: proceeds to regurgitate the contents of this video.
As a left handed wriggtet I am happy that this pen exists
I didn't expect to finish watching this video ordering a set of Pilot Hi-Tec-C 04 from Amazon - out of your sheer passion. My current favorite pen right now is the staedler 0.05 pigment liner - just because it's also quite thin but it is also quite forgiving and allows for some pressure variation. Might start using more of the Pilot just because it might force myself to be more intentional with my strokes.
Hello! I was looking for a good pen with an ultra fine nib like this one but could not find anything to my liking. After watching this video, i went and bought ten of them to try. At the beginning, i hated them because they skipped a lot so i abandoned them. After a while, i picked one up again, no skipping this time. Best pen i have ever used for cursive ever and never going back. Thank you. Cheers!
this pen saved my science class grade back in high school lmao. there was a huge flood back then and my school building was highly affected. the faculty room and most test papers were in the ground floor, so all the papers were submerged. when my classmates and i came back to retrieve our test papers (luckily they didn't get lost in the flood), the teachers noticed most of the students' handwriting was smudged/gone. only my and one of my friends' test papers still have our test answers on the paper. i remember using the g-tec pen when i was taking my tests.
damn.
New to ur channel but starting to grown on me enjoying your content
I love this pen too. It's all I drew with in high school. I've started using watercolours and unfortunately they bleed though, so I've had to switch to a waterproof felt pen. Still love these for sketching though.
What kind of waterproof pen do you use?
@@cheesycheese8451 I usually use the micron or copic pens, but pretty much anything that says 'waterproof' on it should work. Most pens made for illustration would work. Unfortunately because they're felt tip they don't glide on the page as well as the pilot pens. You could even use most ballpoints in a pinch if you don't have any clumps of ink, although it won't be as dark a line, and you'll definitely want to test it first.
agree, i been trying others over years and nothing beats pilot gtec c4
Pilot sign pen is my favourite. The best drawing pen I've ever used.
Nice! Have you tried out this one?
Chroma Moma will do!
I've been using this pen for abt 10 years now, my favourite pen for drawing and for everyday use 💪
Nice one!
as a left handed artist you sold me when talking about the ink not smudging!
I’m a lefty and it smudged for me.
We're really poor so my dad gifted me my first pilot gtec .3 when i graduated high school. It's my favorite not only because it writes well but because of its sentimental value.
Great review and great background track!
You don't want to apply too much pressure, but the fine nib shape of the "high-tech" pen gives you the supple writing feel of a fountain pen. Maruzen, a bookstore and stationery store near Tokyo Station, is a store where you can try out a wide variety of ballpoint pens and choose the one you like.😊
ive been using this pen for as long as i can remember, its are amazing
I remember using this when I was a kid. One big problem I remember unning into was the tip bending and just breaking off by accident. It's a good pen, but just not as tanky as I would like.
I draw a lot with old Papermate 1.0 pens that are gray in color. Hard to find now. I draw mostly on newspaper. The reason is...with these older pens you can draw full black, or barely there wispy. It's like having a pencil. Later versions not gray in the plastic tone won't draw like this. I tried them when I ran out of the older model, and my drawings really suffered. You can very lightly sketch with these, or do shadings, and at the same time press down for full black. It's wonderful. Name me another pen that will do this and I'll buy it. I've been looking at the .7mm pens from Bic, etc., thinking with that finer point I'd be able to have this range, but I don't know yet. What's your thoughts on this?
I'll always remember the day my best friend lent me this pen back in college and no other pen surpassed it's quality for me even those that are more expensive. This is the pen that will surely improve your handwriting and make you want to write on paper instead of type in a computer.
it's easy to fix too! mine fell and the point got pushed down, what i did was i removed 2 metal tings and pulled the tip slowly and put them back! no damage at all
FENG ZHU also recommends this pen in his video about traditional materials, so you can't be too far off on your most bold and assertive affirmation.
Excellent review about the Pilot G-Tech-C gel pen, Chroma Moma. You really made it fun to watch. My favorite pen is Pilot’s Precise V5 and V7 pens (It’s probably called something else outside of The States). I’ve never tried the gel pens yet, but I see them all over here and want to give them a try. Pilot’s rolling ball technology is really nice. I really wish that Pilot made a refillable technical pen, sort of like the Rapidograph pens, only using the rolling ball technology instead of those wires that always break, bend, or catch on the paper. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the Hi-Tecpoint Cartridge System Rollerball Pens anywhere here in The States.
I'm also in the States, and my favorite pen of all time is also the Pilot Precise V5. So, if you haven't had a chance to try this pen yet, please believe me when I say: it's ASTONISHING. It's instantly my new favorite pen, edging out the Precise V5, no question. I would never have stumbled across it otherwise, but I'm traveling around Central Europe and this (the 0.4 size tip) looked like the closest thing to a Precise V5 that I could find. I had low expectations, but after using it for just a single day, I'm now planning to buy several more to take back to the States before I leave!
Great video. Also, hilarious man. Well done.
Pilot just makes really good pens.
The Pilot G-2 is probably my favorite writing utensil on this planet.
Useful tip (heh), if the nib gets bent and you happen to have an empty pen lying around you can use a pair of tweezers or similar to just pull it out and replace it with a straight one.
Also yes, best pen ever that has gotten me trough many inktobers over the years
My new hobby is watching your all videos 2 or 3 times WOW i have to buy this magical pen many artists are try to get more expensive ones but this pen’s line art job is magical. (Maybe its because your line art’s looks king but i want to try it)
This pen is magic it will fix your line art.
My new favorite everyday carry pen is a rOtring 600 3-in-1 with a D1 Hi-Tec-C refill, and a Jetstream D1 refill.
My fave pen of all time!
20 years ago there was pilot G tech, are they the ancestor?
I just bought a bunch of refills and bodies of this pen. The multipen tho. Because i like multiple colours. Much hype
i never thought in my childhood that id love a pen so much i ended up searching it on yt...
Adding another pen to my arsenal. Many thanks!
I want to compare this pen to the P-500 series! Great video
What an enjoyable five minute video about a pen. Huh, that’s not something I’d thought I’d ever say.
If you can continue to do such a high quality vids like this, it won’t be long before your channel is much bigger!
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come!
hahaha this vid was awesome :) love the music choices too!
Major cool music. From Dave Brubeck to the Seat Belts. Maybe we should call you “Pen Cowboy”? Whatever. AND I agree re the Hi-Tec C. Super excellent job on the vid here. Very watchable.
the uniball eye is also PRETTY GOOD too
Love your videos ! You gained a suscriber from France!
Merci beaucoup!
I can’t draw at all like seriously but I do like sketching and scribbling during class, so I’m considering getting this for that cause this is a wonderful ad
Just ordered some of these. I’ll be the judge. 😎🙏
Ok they came in. They are awesome.
I totally agree this pen is the best of the best !
Had zillions of other pens however I always come back using the hi tech.
Never fails me and it's a pleasure to use in detailing.
never expected a pen montage with cowboy bebop music
Both this pilot high tec and the uni-ball signo UM-151 0.38 are god-tier, although the second is a little harder to find as I had to order it all the way from Japan
Oo I love the uni-ball too, but it's the rubber grip. I really hate rubber grips.
JetPens. They have hundreds of brands.
Holy shit !!! I've been looking for this pen! My friend gave me the spare one she had but I lost it TT been going through lists of Japanese pens just to find this pen cause I loved how it felt when I was drawing but I couldn't find it
I suck at drawing but i like looking at it.
Subbed
I remember literally pulling the tip out and placed it back in and the g tec just went "nothing happened", still wrote smoothly and especially when i injected alcohol into the tip, like that shit after a few lines, worked fine albeit much more liquidy and much less blackness but it works!
You should be paid for this video😂 great commercial! Almost clicked away at the start but then Cowboy Bebop soundtrack started playing 😂😅 glad i stayed!
I love these pens so much that I get anxiety if I think about the possibility of them discontinuing them.
Pilot G-Tec C4 is the best pen I've ever bought. I can't write so confidently or well with any other pen.
Dude I love the ending
I'm in love with this pen, but... I prefer the .25 and clogging is a big problem. I can't seem to fix them once they clog. I suppose I'll have to learn to love a wider line
You need to try the P500. It's amazing also.
I love how you used the Cowboy Bebop theme to show how awesome it was
It seems as if its something between ballpoint pen and fountain pen. Makes me curious if I would like drawing with it. I am quite picky with my pens. I don't like the feeling and line quality of a ballpoint pen but like the one of a fountain pens and fine liners. And i am not a big fan of the limitation in direction with a fountain pen. They get this scratchy feeling and spitting if you draw the wrong direction. So this pilot might be interesting.
But I think I am generally pretty picky when it comes to the haptic of a pen. Generally fine liners are my favorites but the nib wears a bit like with mechanical pencils.
