In fact, Hong Kong has been ranked as the least affordable housing market for several years in a row, of course; Hong Kong the most expensive housing market in the world and this factor forces Hongkongers to fit into tiny spaces that can have a drastic effect on their life. Several Hongkongers nowadays are living in spaces from 75 to 140 square feet. Imagine this, the average parking space in the USA is approximately 150 square feet.

80% are woods, but it is not government won’t allow development. Every time, government proposed to increase land or housing supply. There would be protests. The real estates tycoons won’t allow that and they fund many environmental groups to oppose government
I actually stayed in a Coffin apartment in Mong Kok for 8 USD a night, had just a bed and shower was crazy but I actually had a lot of fun.

99% people have refrigerators in hk .... but Chinese are obsessed with fresh meat, seafood as they believe they taste much better than frozen. A lot of the housewives go to the wet market daily to buy freshly killed fish , chicken

These apartment do a great job
What I like to see a lot about Asian countries are those small narrow alleys that lead to small shops, restaurants or apartments. The Asians are masters creating that kind of cool vibe in small alleys like that. It looks like a completely different experience watching that. Here in New York City the Asians also have those type of alleys in Chinatown and in Flushing. It's really beautiful to watch.

The Hong Kong housing crisis was started by the Hong Kong people themselves. Back in the 80s every Tom, Dick and Harry would go queue up to buy an apartment, not to live in but to speculate and hope the demand will outdo the supply and pushes the price up. Properties were relatively cheap back then and only required a 10% deposit. As more and more hong kong people started to speculate on the property market, it created a chain effect where land and property prices rocketed.
Hong Kong people is the most materialistic and self-entitled people on earth. When the artificial island development to build 250,000 cheap homes were proposed to solve the housing crisis, it faced huge oppositions not just from developers but from Hong Kong people (homeowners). For outsiders looking in, the truth isn't always as it seems.
....And, yet, the Hong Kong people" don't rule in Hong Kong. The CCP shut down the British-estabished Legislative Council in favor of their own version which favors pro-Beijing businessmen rather than ordinary residents.
...Plus, I gather that you are saying the housing situation was better when the British were running Hong Kong, BEFORE the handover to the PRC.
@@MrJm323 Yes but that's a whole new discussion. The housing crisis started in the 80s. We can't keep using this as an excuse and justification for everything that's wrong in Hong Kong. At some point, we need to take some responsibility or we'll just keep repeating the same mistake.
Besides sub-divided flats, the smallest place to rent is actually called bedspace apartment aka cage home/ coffin cubicle, where ppl actually live in cages..

Well in Canada we have a 25 yrs mortgage. I guess it depends how much your house is, how much is your down payment, and how much money you have.
Yes, true here in the usa we have the option for a 30 year mortgage or 15. Like you said it all depends how much money you have
This is fascinating and well made but really reminds me of how much I appreciate big, open spaces. I think I'd spend a lot of time there looking up into the sky; the only open space there that's free to enjoy.

With the new bridge you can drive across now, it’s all about gambling. The Chinese seem obsessed with gambling. 🥴🥴 the egg custard tarts are seriously good though. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
There is a slight error to the ownership of the land. The government owns all of the land in Hong Kong. They sell out the right to developing the land to big cooperations, usually for a a limited period of time (~50 years?). But the law actually allows the government to retake any sold out pieces of land, and use it to develop public housing. But the government rarely does it because it involves the interests of the big businesses, which are major stakeholders in HK.

I’ve been on that free tour. The display apartment was just bought and was empty. $2000hkd pm seems a good value for that. Those guides are very biased. I caught mine out on several inconsistencies regarding the rental market.

I think that the monopolistic approach in Hong Kong is so messed up by choking the people in to box room living. This is a rough situation for so many people who already can barely afford to pay bills, sad☹ I think about many countries and the poverty but yet so many are happy in their lives, Hong Kong in its own do not seem that way. I really like your insight into this world they live in and the reality they have. It was a good video Jim but heartbreaking at the same time. By the way Jim, nice tattoos👍 I have a few😄 I don't think Tah liked that apartment with the metal frame bunk beds and that tall blond was just about 4inch from touching her head to the ceiling.😮 sorry for late watch but we had🏥 issues to deal with. Seeing ur video made me grateful & blessed here in Malaysia.My parent now have very comfy medium cost apartment and finish their loan within 10y with very average income below 2k.now hopefully retired with another landed properties.i learnt much we should manage well our money and good government does gv us choice and better life here.love my country🥰
FYI...Hong Kong accommodation is small but most of the families have fridge unless they are really really poor.
The thing about buying fresh food, I think the main problem is the weather, humidity and heat. Even putting food in the fridge, because of the intense heat in Summer food can still go off. Liquids like milk, drinks aren’t too bad.

I am from Hong Kong ,, born and raised here .I have watched the video and I thought your Hong Kong do not seem like the Hong Kong that I have lived in .Indeed , Hong Kong 's people home is so small , for my selves , I have never have my own room for 2x years , I shared with my grandmother .But I believe most Hong Kong people would have refrigerator in their home , it just about how big the refrigerator is .Resident here buying food for every single meal in the wet market as traditionally they believe food ingredient should be fresh and that can make it taste good and have much more nutritious than the freeze one .unless you live in cage room

Hong Kong properties is speculated by Hong Kong People themselves and now they suffer by their own doings. The HK government is really suck in this respect.
HK government has no control of their real estate tycoons. Whenever the HK government had initiatives to increase housing supply or land supply to ease their housing situation, such as the 85,000 annual housing plan many years ago, or Carrie Lam’s land reclamation plan, there would be big social events and protests that force them to step down, so you know who are behind these protests. Recently the Central government pressured those tycoons to release some lands. They used to just hold them to control the supply and don’t develop.

Over the last 15 years I have spent time pretty much everywhere in SEA. Currently living in BKK. Your excellent videos confirm my decision not to waste any time or money visiting HK.

@Chan 160138 Since the protest, many businesses have gone out of business. Tourism down 50%. And it's both police and protesters that at fault. Protesters beat up elderly people and set a man on fire because he didn't agree with him. Smashing stores and MTR stations, and setting them on fire are not peaceful protests.

The small apartment is amazing. So well planned out but sad to learn what the government has done to force people into 'shared residences'.
A real eye opener into the Hong Kong life that people their have.
Basically there are just too many people cramming into the city center. Not someting special. You could find micro apartment in Manhatten New York as well. City center attracts people from everywhere and there is simply not enough space for them.
Im really fascinated with micro-apartments. Would love to build my dream one day. it all we need humans are just wasteful with space

Comparing to some US big cities, I guess there are much fewer homeless people on the street in Hong Kong.
that's only because not staying on the street means living in a cage the size of a poodle/chihuahua cage would be if in the US
I imagine finding a high paying job in HK must be a breeze because why would someone choose ( voluntarily) to live in that cramped city if that's not the case?

Its crazy what is happening there, i saw a VICE documentary about Hong Kong and the growing wealth gap between the ultra rich and extremely poor people and how most millennials growing up in Hong Kong are worried and scared about their future in Hong Kong because most cant afford rent or to pay their bills.

We visited my girlfriend's relative's apartment in Hong Kong. It was on Hong Kong Island. Up the hills. When we walked in my jaw dropped: it was very large by North American standards. The maid's room was about the size of some apartments occupied by families of four. At that point I really realized how much Hong Kong is a place of extremes. On an unrelated note, at about 4:45, Tah is preparing a Cup Noodles

The greediness of the few uber wealthy families controlling HK, the inability of the HK government to provide affordable housing to its population, is the root cause of these demonstrations. Unlike the public housing system in Singapore that has been brilliantly managed.

Most information that you have included in the video is accurate, however, the government part is quite incorrect. Please do a bit more research on the government's perspective, because since Hong Kong is opened to the people in Mainland China, the prices of housing have kept increasing. I recommend you guys watching other documentaries about Hong Kong housing problem rather just blaming causes to the Hong Kong government. Does the Legislative Council (which obviously makes the decisions) represent the "people" of Hong Kong, or does it represent business interests which Beijing favors?
