@@theempresss sad and unfathomable. feel sorry for all 200,000 people living like this
Hannah White why
I know all about it firsthand. I've been stuck living in my dad's kitchen for nearly 7 combined YEARS, in California. I have no personal space or privacy, no quality of life, and it's driving me insane with severe, crippling depression. Sometimes I can't even get out of bed (which is between the sink and the living room TV, surrounded in cardboard). I'm miserable and frustrated every damn day. I can't even go out and try to work, without getting road rage, and exploding with anger at people. I literally had to quit my last full-time job at a warehouse because of my severely dysfunctional living conditions. Most people don't even understand or want to help, and simply call me "lazy". I feel so empty and dead inside. So burnt out. I can't live or work like this. I just can't. I'm just spiralling deeper and deeper into a huge mess of debt and problems. I get collection letters in the mail constantly, even from the police. I tried sleeping in my car, out of sheer desperation, but got caught up in a mess of parking tickets which I can't pay. I can't even pay my damn bills. I hate my life and the world so much.

Every day in the US, on average, 55 people become homeless. For some, it’s a choice. For many, it is not. While we had seen a decrease for a number of years, the homeless rate in the United States is going up again, and in many states, it’s exploding.

The sad thing is this might soon become a norm in the US as well. I work 50+ hours a week with decent pay, good credit, and STILL can't afford reasonable accommodations in a small city. The best a lot of people in my situation can get is renting rooms and those are becoming progressively more expensive too. Wouldn't be surprised if we start renting out cabinet spaces like this, I know someone personally who slept in a walk in closet. It's scary how basic accomodations is becoming a losing game for a large percentage of the world.
Maybe but dont forget how many homes are being built also I can’t help but notice how much bigger cities are getting so it might not be such the case but something close
@Masterman5010 Yes, but the sad reality is that those homes are being sold almost exclusively to upperclass families or retirees. If they don't sell They're more often then not left to rot, that's a big issue in major cities. So logically, we'd assume older homes would enter the market at a discount, but no. They're being renovated into far more expensive homes or bought up as investment properties. Both mean higher mortgages/rentals.
@@Zombie_Trooper Strongly depends on land management with population ratio, new york has one of the worst proportions over there, lack of residential land means sky rocketing rent for smaller buildings and living quarters which would result to smaller room but another good point yet most middle class folk could be able to afford depending on how much they make, it really depends on economy and land development

1500 british pounds every month to live like that. This ain't right
Mzero To think I pay half that to live in a bright and airy two bedroom flat overlooking a park and the sea here in the UK. People who grumble about the cost of their rent really should give thought to those that are forced to live in our world’s cities in such desperate and diabolical situations. It’s increíble what humanity has come to... it’s a disgrace
I agree,, this is so sad.
Yes, because obviously people were much better off in the past.
Don’t get me wrong, I think this is awful and unacceptable living conditions, but human rights in China have always been exceptionally poor.
Humanity always lived in such conditions
It's not that it has come to it, it's just it hasn't actually really changed.
The sad thing is we have the tech, the knowledge and enough food etc for everyone. No one should be living on the streets or in places like that.
Nothing will ever change unless our way of thinking changes

*Educate yourself first.*
During the British colonial ruling, Hong Kong land belonged to the Queen of England, and only the rich could build houses in the land of 20%. Most of the rich were British or did things for the British. *_80% of the land was not allowed to develop._* The situation has not changed by now. House prices are getting higher, and many people are borrowing to buy a house. As the population increased, the former HK Chief Executive (Has became Vice Chairman of the CPPCC) planned to develop land and build a lot of cheap houses, but housing prices plummeted, and hundreds of thousands of people protested the government's actions.
The government can only give up. This is the advantage of capitalism.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam has already planned to transforming the ocean into land. But I am not optimistic because capitalists will certainly manipulate Parliament.

Even prison cells are better than this. Sad
Why even have babies? They both know the baby won't have a happy life growing up...
So they can pay rent and food for the baby for 18 years and then he becomes homeless
This is inhuman living standards. Whoever thinks this is acceptable I.e: the landlords charging ridiculous prices should be in prison.
These arent ridiculous prices in Hk. Compared to the rest of the world, yes. But a combination of mainlanders buying up tons of apartments and keeping them empty and the land: people ratio make housing very expensive. But yes, these are obviously not legal.
The authorities know this but HK needs cheap labour…
I dont think thats the landlords fault? Buying a land in hk is expensive too. I guess the problem is deeper than that. Owners have needs too so SOME have no choice but to price it that way.

@Steven Leon there's a lot of space but also a lot of demons in the ruling class.
This is an idea though, there are small/squashed houses in Japan, its space saving. That's a good point, innit?

Hong Kong is an island. Land is limited. Maybe the people on that island are too many.
Why are they ashamed? The city should be ashamed.
why is cheap housing isnt included in demands?
The city is owned by Li Kai-Chen. Haha
@@andia968 I guess the funder of the movement does not like it. After the handover of hong kong, the government wanted to provided the cheap housing in the city, but rejected by the local people, who prefered to supper the house price.

Such houses are death traps in the event of fire. Particularly at night. It looks most of the partitions are wooden based.
It looks like they want to kill the people on purpose
This is what I thought. Its so shocking.

The poor in the Philippines go through so much worse than this. We have citizens who get by with a dollar a day. There are Filipinos who live under bridges. Tsk
Nathaniel Waga Just because Philippines is worse doesn’t mean the ones in Hong Kong aren’t bad. Everyone needs rights for land, money and food. Just be grateful and never compare. Every homeless/poor person needs to be helped
Very similar to living in a tent. Except they pay a ton of money to live in that little shack.
@D R sheds would definitely be difficult to come by though. Plus somehow those coffin homes are getting a supply of electricity you'd have to worry about that and an irrigation system for water.
I’m so confused, this costs more than my house! Is this like a scam or something?
land is really expensive in Hong Kong, my entire family of 6 live in a small flat around 300 square feet
No, it's not a scam. Hong Kong has the highest real estate prices in the world: I believe a parking lot recently sold for $3 billion dollars. The island is very small and land is limited; not to mention it has a dense population and the government opened up the real estate market to foreign businessmen, meaning the businessmen have the final say on how expensive they want the land to be. An example of failed capitalism.
