I can tell when something like that gets manipulated in a song I listen to enough to know and I know for a fact that thous string sounds you hear are not part of the original track. I'm guessing Gerrit, the Synthesizer, Removed some notes from the track to allow the strings to sound more amped up.
There's probably a way to find out for sure - but to me they don't even sound like sampler strings. They sound like pure synth. Doesn't really matter - its a great track.

The bass parts root the keyboard riffs in multiply complex and subtle ways. The keys are the true star of the song, if you really get down to brass tacks...and the whole thing is impossible without the elemental drumming.
