Fun fact: The girl that died from eating poison berries was seen in the film studying which berroes and plants are poisonous, which some fans have taken as a sign of deliberate intent to commit suicide.

Lilliath No, some berries are VERY poisonous. Berries are basically plant fetuses - hence why they contain seeds. Not all plants find the idea of being eaten appealing (though some like it a LOT, case in point the tomato), while some plants like the idea of killing animals for nutrients (case in point, the Venus Fly Trap). Poisonous berries have the advantage of killing the thing that eats them - either for defense, or to create free compost for the seeds to grow in.
And the worst part? There are not a lot of visual indicators for whether or not a berry is poisonous, hence why some survival experts recommend avoiding wild berries.

Lilliath Because there are *few* signs, not *no* signs. IF you know what to look for, you can eat wild berries. But a layperson isn't likely to know such. It's good survival sense to know which are poisonous and which aren't.

I don't buy the suicide theory.
Other than bulking up on food before the games, Foxface is shown to have knowledge of the plants to eat, avoiding the cornucopia, and focused on avoiding fightings and focusing instead on surviving, scavenging, and sabotage.
She made it to fourth place. It makes no sense to commit suicide once you've statistically got a 25% chance to win. Her survival skills may have been lacking, leaving her weakened and starving, but at that point there's no reason to quit. Worst case scenario you keep poison berries on your person, so if you find yourself in a situation where a brutal death is likely, you can instead give yourself a less violent death.
I assume she simply was hungry and desperate and assumed they wouldn't be stupid enough to collect poisonous berries.

I actually saw this super genius idea (I didn’t come up with it, just sharing) but if you took the poisonous berries from the first book, and put them in empty parachutes from sponsors and drop them near tributes, they will think they’re sponsors sent them food and die. Another option would be to “accidentally” drop the berries when running from someone, the tribute will think it’s real food and eat them

Knives are cool and all but I’d rather tie it to the end of a stick. Spears and polearms have been hunting tools and battlefield weapons since before the Bronze Age, and they’re also relatively easy to learn compared to other weapons.
If you have a time crunch and have to become proficient in a weapon in a very little amount of time, my bet is spear. they also have a range advantage too so everyone with their tiny little knives aren’t gonna be able to reach you before you reach them

Fun story! Because of this single video, I have had virtually no body insecurities whatsoever in four years. As a little grade seven who loved the Hunger Games, first watching this video was great. Clearly, the advice of putting on weight to survive stuck in my mind, because about a week later, I was getting dressed and looked in the mirror. I looked a bit fatter than usual, but instead of some degrading and self deprecating comment, my first thought - and I quote - was “eh, you’d survive the hunger games”. How to increase odds in hunger games: step 1: have your memoir from your family be a unassuming necklace or bracelet (at least 23 beads) and each bead is heavy enough to trigger a pressure plate. Step 2: when waiting at your platform throw them at the other tributes pressure plates (opting for the biggest threats) 3:Enjoy the increased odds 4: follow the rest of the advice in this vid, but when you get sponsors keep the food, mix in poison and drop them above people (at night from a tree) so they eat/consume it. Bing bang boom you have good odds

But in fact the youngest victor, and he majorly won because not only he's a good fighter, but he also very good looking that he able to get so many sponsors to support him, he even manage to get a trident as a sponsor and it was mention as one of the most expensive item to ever sent into the arena.

Instead of flat-out running from the cornucopia, I would run away and then hide in the bushes or other natural camouflage , wait till things calm down and everyone's gone, and loot the remains, chances are the dead tributes have something on them and the cornucopia still has some supplies left.

One thing that wasn't mentioned here is the publicity side of the games.
At least one victor (Finnick) won due to sheer good looks- and Katniss only won because of her love story which meant people sponsored her. You need to be either strong enough for people to think it a good investment or likeable enough for people to want you to win.
There are several times throughout the games during which tributes almost die but are then rescued by a well-timed parachute.
Also for the training- you need to learn how to swim. True, there's no pool at the gym- but just getting someone to teach you the basic movements will give you a higher chance of survival. The 75th Hunger Games were started in the middle of a lake and at least one tribute (Annie) won because the arena flooded and they were the only one who could swim. Water can also be a good hiding place- so just practising holding your breath could make all the difference.

Most tributes carry with them some very specific skills that they learned from their district. So Rue knows how to treat Tracker Jacker bites because she comes from district eleven where there are a lot of Tracker Jacker nests- but Katniss knows how to hunt and trap things because she comes from district twelve where the rules are more lax.
So ideally you should team up with someone from a district that is totally different to yours. So say, if you're from an industrial district like district three you should form an alliance with someone from a more rural district such as district eleven. The second point is wrong. It does matter where you're from.
• The better your support team (stylist, mentor etc.), the better your chances of actually having decent sponsors.
• The better you look, the higher the chance of attracting those sponsors.

Age does matter. A 12 or 13 year old isn’t going to have the strength or the size to compete with full-grown teenagers, generally. And they will have significantly less training with weapons or with general knowledge of plants or survival. Not to mention the fact that such young tributes are going to find it almost impossible to get any sponsors or allies in the arena because they have such a small chance of winning. Most other tributes and sponsors will consider them to be death fodder before they even have the chance to step foot in the arena.
That’s not even mentioning the theoretical young districts from places like District 11 or 12, both places where prospective tributes aren’t really taught to hunt or fight and usually don’t even know much about vegetation either. They’re basically dead on-arrival unless they can hide the entire time, get lucky and use something like poison or traps to stay alive, and avoid being killed by hazards from the Capitol.
Even at that, you’d still have to fight the last tribute to the death, who would likely be much bigger than you and much more experienced with weapons. Your chances of winning are still abysmal, because they’ll be even more on their guard and you’re their only target left.

Coming back to this years later, and in these 2 episodes, MatPat misses something extremely important. The story that you want to build around yourself is EXTREMELY different depending on where you're from. The poorer districts' tributes would BENEFIT from volunteering as it's unheard of before the 74th games and it makes everyone sympathise with Katniss, whereas in the richer districts it's EXPECTED for people to do so, so if you're form a career district, you just wanna go out there to make sure everyone knows your strength from the get-go, so you either make yourself as intimidating as possible to look most likely to be the betting favourite, or make people send your stuff through self-presentation to tell a narrative, if you're form a lower district

i feel like you can’t say age/district doesn’t matter because you’re not looking at the percentage of winners from each district you’re just looking at the fact that someone from each district has won in the past. and the ages are more variant based on what year they won because these games have been going on for 75 years you have to look at how old everyone was when they won not how old they are now.

Although i couldn’t find much evidence on age i tallied the number of 30 known victors from various districts (cause i don’t have much better to do) and here are my numbers
1: 3
2: 8
3: 2
4: 6
5: 3
6: 4
7: 2
8: 2
9: 2
10: 2
11: 2
12: 3
From this we can see that districts 2, 4 and 6 have an advantage, which makes sense as district 2 is the district of masonry/weaponry (self explanatory as to why it has a huge lead) and is also the richest district
district 4 is of fishing which is relatively useful when in natural biomes hence why they have a a fair amount of wins as well - not to mention that most fishers generally have good natural survival skills
district 6 being the district of transportation makes bare sense to me especially since they don’t use weapons or tools often. But they are known to be one of the most rebellion districts which may result in some underlying aggression of tributes which can play factors.
Many of the poorer/less relevant/combat savvy districts are in the 2-3 range with the exception of district 1, despite it being a career district i would assume because it’s the closest thing to the capitol people r probs lazy i dunno.
So if you were to live in panem, pray you’re born in either district 2, 4 or 6 cause then the odds will probably be in your favour

Not gonna lie tho The Hunger Games would be quite a good show if you think about it in the sense of how many views it would get and how much money it would make.
For example people are gonna watch if 2 people from where they live are put into the games because they’ll want to route for them and if the world is in districts you would want them to win even more.
Secondly, if there was a place like the Capital then they would want to bet because for some reason people just really like to bet.
So yeah it may be horrible but I feel like it would get a lot of views and make lots of money it’s like one of those things that you don’t wanna watch but wouldn’t be able to not watch cuz you wanna see whose gonna win.

Sorry, but this... doesn't make sense. There were only 4 other tributes still in the area, she had a pretty good chance of winning especially considering the feud between Cato and Katniss & Peeta. Also, in the books it is explicitly stated that she ate the berries because she saw Peeta picking them and (probably because he was allied with Katniss) she guessed that the berries were safe to eat.

The real question is this: in that week before the game, should you eat high amounts of food to gain calories, or should you eat less and less and work more and more to reduce your metabolism?
If you keep eating all day long, you'll have big troubles addapting in an environment without food. No more to say that due to your "gains", your amount of fats from blood will highly increase and every effort will be enough to break you down. Also, your liver will be messed up.
On the other hand, long periods of effort with less food will force your body to reduce its metabolism. Try to work in constructions for a week: At the end you'll need little to no food and water fot the same amount of energy, you'll sweat less, and even have more strenght.

That's completely unscientific.
The basal human metabolism is virtually constant. It only decreases a bit once you're literally starving. But that also means you get tired much more easily.
Also - every human (except for diabetics) is able to survive days without food.
