Being a beginning guitar student at ago 71, I've looked at the overwhelming amount of learning guitar courses available on RUclips. However, with Laura she seems to connect to myself and probably many other Senior Citizens as well because the time and care she puts into her videos. I have to admit I'm seriously thinking about taking her course. At 71, I may not have the speed a younger person has, but I do have the patience and wisdom a person of youth may not have, trust me age is only a number, nothing more. I'm considering taking it Laura. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, with your "The Girl Next Door Looks", your quite attractive Laura.
Lauren, I just want to express that I think you area very good teacher with a beautiful energy or vibe if you wanna call it , that emanates from you. Thank you very much for these videos. Keep smiling
Enjoying your lessons. Everytime I hear this song it reminds of the Bob Dylan influence on John Lennon. Listen to Dylan's "I Don't Believe You" and you can see how John turned that into something better (musically) in Norwegian Wood
Great lesson thank you. Constructive criticism... would have been very nice if you'd done a complete play through for us to see and play along with. Would have been really useful. Thanks for the lesson.
Hi Ricky, thanks so much. Unfortunately due to copyright laws online teacher sometimes get hit for performing the songs. I sometimes do play alongs as a separate video series so that I don't get hit with a copyright use.
Hi Lauren, Hope you are doing well....We've not chatted much for awhile on the FB teaching groups. I guess you are going to online video lessons. I am headed that way myself, trying to morph from scheduled private lessons. Nice intro lesson on the song. There are lots of ways to approach it. As an advanced version of it, I have learned to play this song in double drop D, both fingerstyle and flatpick. It resonates like crazy that way, with the big D bass on the bottom and the unison D notes up top. I play the melody an octave lower, entirely in first position. Try it out. I can send you my charts if you like.
Hey Dirk, yeah I do both online and offline lessons. It's been great. I focus mainly on easier version for the students and RUclips but will check out a drop D tuning.
You're teaching this the right way Lauren. When I made an attempt to learn this like 35 years ago I was taught it was all centred around the E chord with no capo. It seems like every teacher you find here on You Tube has their own way to teaching the song but they also play it differently and most are not right. Examples. Stair way to Heaven and Sweet Home Alabama have to be two of the most butchered songs I've seen teachers teach. None teach it the same way. Thanks for all you do. I am looking into your 7 step course.
Lauren I don't have a capo, are all capo's the same? How do i buy one that suits a beginner? Mind you this lesson looks way to hard for me after 6 months I am still unable to play a whole song, is this normal or am I just plain stupid?
Merrilyn, most capos work essentially the same. There are many different brands. I like Kyser. That's OK if this song is still too hard for you. You are not stupid. You just might not have started in the right spot. That's why I like my guitar course because I tell you which songs might be in your wheel house. Without knowing what skills you have or don't have, it's hard for me to honestly say where you should be. In my guitar course, most students can play two full songs after 30 days. Check it out: www.laurenbateman.com/course There is a 30-day guitar challenge.
@@LaurenBateman aww thanks! If I could have face to face lessons with you I wouldn't hesitate! I'm not so good with online/RUclips as there are so many lessons on there & its hard to find the one that will talk in a language I understand & fit me & be where I'm at. So many of them I feel like they may as well be talking a totally different language to mine & I can't even get passed the first sentence they speak coz nothing makes sense! I'm just scared to fork out money for a course & find I'm still not understanding what is being told to me & thus wasting my hard earned money. However if most of your students can learn a whole song in around one month I'm feeling more confident that maybe it's time to give this a try? If I can't get there in that time with paid lessons then I'll at least have learned something. Will take a look (& work out what will cost in Aussie dollars & see if it works in my budget) as soon as I find some time (working 3 x 12hr shifts from today) Thankyou :)
Hi Laura, excuse me what I am going to tell you, one day a friend of mine who was not, told me that the capodaster is for people who do not know music, do not know how to transport, you have to play in all tones. the capodastro should never be used.
Ha ha ha. Don't listen to your friend. They sound like a snob. There are so many professional musicians that use capos including myself. I guess I don't know music according to your friend...but I sure do have a lot of fun with it.
@@LaurenBateman Instead all this talk in the beginning I 'd play the song - to build an interest. Then I would start introduce the parts of the song , and this would be the right time to show the chords , their arraignment on the neck of the guitar ( showing the letter- symbols to the absolute beginner , particularly in actual sequence like DD G DG - (whatever) is confusing , and telling that there are the chords charts somewhere - totally counter productive. By the way, the introductory talk is absolutely waist of time . Only the title and composer should be given -The teacher is not a star here. This is not a school - it is a class on the Net - There are many a people trying to win the customer by talking -wrong idea ! Music is important here. Your telling that the sitar playing notes are at the end is causing people dump your talk and go to the end , to check. And it's disappointment ! Your showing off your singing skills is quite intrusive - the beautiful voice nothwistanding. Sorry !
And one more thing. When it comes to showing the chord changes , you do it MUCH to fast for the beginner- it is irritating. Over all it is visible that the teacher thinks much more about her own person than about the student's needs.
