    The lens detached from the body that you saw on youtube was an one-off case. That person's R3 needs checkup. People who complained about this lens mostly don't have one and have not tried one. I just got it a few days ago. I tried in a storm-like lighting condition. Its AF works great and its sharpness is the same as my 100-500. Actually it is slightly better than the 100-500+1.4x at 700 mm. It is a great lens. Of course, this is not a low light lens. Lighting before and after sunset is for the big guns like 600 f4 or 400 2.8, but those cost 10 times more. Canon has a RF 800 f5.6 at $17k. As far as heat simmer goes, no matter what lens and cameras, the pictures will be blurry. So 600 mm or 800 mm will be affected. In that situation, you either get close to the subject or quit shooting. For dust or moisture, I put on a coat to protect it.

      Hey Kenneth, awesome thanks for the perspective. Yeah true that was just one case but I have often thought cripes what if my camera falls off in some freak mishandling or something. Yeah haha I simply won’t pull this out indoors or from dusk till dawn, might try a tripod for the moon or something see how it goes. I’m always asleep at night. 17k for the 800 well that settles it for me, the 200-800 is the best lens I’ll ever own at 800mm

    The Digital Picture did a test chart review, and found the 200-800 is not as sharp as the 100-500.
    However, only Canon have the best lens correction profiles, not in LR or PS, the correct lens correction profiles are in Canon DPP only.
    To properly compare these 2 lenses, DPP + Canon profiles should be used during the RAW conversion stage.
    Nearly no one does this.
    Pangolin is probably correct, however, if DPP + Canon profiles were used, the differences will likely not be as great.
    Jan Wagener reviewed the 200-800 and said that it is was basically ok most of the time, except that highlights were more prone to blowouts on bright areas of a branch, due to lack of lens coatings. Jan is a full pro (his bird pics are on Ozzie stamps).
    I will try the 200-800 at some stage, but Im happy with my 100-500 + 1.4x tc atm.

    Thanks. Good stuff. I think some of your issues would be that you are using an R7, because they could be typical R7 issues. How do I know? I have an R7. I also have an R5. Try it on an R5 or equivalent like an R6 to see if some of the R7 probs go away. Thanks, again.

    I wonder if there's some kind of cover we can put over the extending barrel of the lens to protect it from dust getting in. Perhaps holding something like pantyhose on the two ends that can stretch to fit as the barrel extends.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  9 месяцев назад +1

      Agree. I’ve seen some lens with a compressable rubber flange across the gap, that could have been an option I figure.

    • @bodinian
      @bodinian 9 месяцев назад

      @@TheOtherPhotoGuy I'd get that. I used to think my RF 14-35mm f/4 was safe due to its super short throw, but examining it in daylight recently showed that the small exposed part of the barrel somehow got dust on it. Dust is like germs: everywhere all the time constantly trying to get in where it isn't wanted.

      Expect to use very high ISO if lighting is low, if field is well lit it could be considered. I will get out and take some sports photography soon so will have a better answer for you - others may already have better answers for you here

      Its the only lens at this level out of the Canon , Sony and Nikon brands that is so Dark (High F stop) , has a huge Zoom throw compred to the outstanding internal zooming SHORT throw Zoom action , Internal zooming Z Nikon 180-600 >> extends longer than a Trombone in an Orchestra and is optically not as good as the Sony 200-600 and Nikon 180-600 .. This Dust Sucker shows once more that Canon should stick to making their outstanding Printers as they are years behind in Lens /Camera tech

    hey quick question
    i just watch your video on trying to fly the mini se with a gopro
    i see a few repair marks on the drone
    is it flyable? my drone just got in a crash and it's a pain to replace the shell
    the damages are just some cracks i've already repaired the cracks and it seems pretty sturdy
    but i haven flown it yet the damages are similar to yours did your mini se fly well with the damages?

    I saw Duade Paton’s positive review a few weeks back and thought this looked a pretty useful piece of kit. I have the 70-200 4L , but at almost 4k NZ this lens is too much for me as most of what I do seems to be at the wide end but I’ll definitely put it on my wish list if I suddenly start photographing wildlife. 😀 Happy New Year, hopefully a good one for you . 👍

    I wonder how the EF 100-400mm II with 2 X extender would compare to the RF 200-800 on EOS R ??

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  7 месяцев назад

      That’s such a great comparison to contemplate, I think the downside to a teleconvertors upside costs image quality by a specific calculation, but even so I would keen as to see it for myself! Bugger though I don’t have a 2x or a 100400 🤬

    The real cons of this lens: It has no super UD elements in it and will be subject to chromatic aberration and render highlights terribly, it is not an L quality build because it is not an L lens, regardless of what color it is, the 600-700 mm on full frame is generally the upper limit of focal length because of heat and air diffraction. This was more than evident in some of the images you displayed. 1280mm equivalent as produced by aps-c sensor will do nothing but produce terrible images and video. I'm having a ball watching folks try to compare this to the 100-500 and similar. In a year these same folks will be making the 200-800 is rubbish videos. The only objective review I've seen of this lens is from Pangolin so far.

      Depends when and where you use it. I get very clear images in winter even at long ranges. And not all places have heat distortion in summer.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  10 месяцев назад +10

      Fair enough but I love it because I don’t have tens of thousands of dollars for the L lenses in the long focal length - these are my pros and cons and you gave your cons, cheers. You get what you pay for and this is the lens I can afford so I’m thrilled with it. Always something to gripe about and you have done just that, much of that stuff doesn’t matter to me because I just take photos for the fun of it and I’m not a perfectionist, I just enjoy a fun hobby rather than take enjoyment out of always being critical. Of course the colour, which I did not refer to is about heat management and have no correlation to build quality, it’s simply a colour. Enjoy YOUR life mate and thanks for the comment, but I’m personally really excited by this lens and thrilled to have some capability to shoot long regardless of it not always being perfect, of which I certainly never contended this lens was.
