Awesome stuff, both stills and video! Just got my own 200-800 yesterday. It's currently on my R6 Mk II, but I plan to add an R5 Mk II within the next couple of weeks. Your information here is really helpful, and I'm looking forward to trying your settings out. Thanks for posting!
I've shot Hummers for a long time. Even for in flight (in hover) shots, I've used anywhere from 1/60th, where the wings were so blurred you couldn't even see them, but the head ands beak were still very sharp, all the way up to 1/8000th, to make the tip of their wings as sharp as their eye. But nowadays, I've settled on about 1/500th, to 1/800th, to show "some motion" in the wings, which I think looks the most natural to what our eyes see in real life. I've shot them with a LOT of different camera and lens combos, and gotten pretty good results with most of them. I would totally expect the 200-800 to be fantastic for Hummers :) I didn't try for any when I rented it, but will definitely shoot some with it soon :)
Kind of surprised she fed even with you there. My locals fly off and don't come back the moment they see me. I have planted my own little Flower Garden. So lucky you to get this great chance to catch one of my favorite birds. I need to build a Blind so that problem isn't a problem. Which is why I hope one day, all cameras feature the Auto Capture Feature of the Nikon Z8/9 cameras.
I was a little surprised too. Typically wildlife at this park is pretty skittish, but I wonder if these hummingbirds have been feeding in this spot for years and have developed a tolerance for people. It’s right near a parking lot, so they’ve been near people quite a bit. 😁
Enjoyed this one. My daughters and I have enjoyed experimenting with the hummingbirds at our feeder. we should probably add flowers they like for better backgrounds. I have been using the R7 and RF 100 - 500 and it works well, just like your experience. The biggest downside is the rolling shutter if you shoot electronic, the wing warp is unnatural, not mere blur. Never overheats on video, including 120fps though. My full frame is still the old 5d Mark IV, been waiting for the R5 Mark II like you.
No doubt, the R7 has some serious rolling shutter at high frame rates. It produces some really weird results. I really like the R7 for video. The 5D4 is a great camera. Hope you guys have some more opportunities to capture some great hummingbird shots this season! 👍
Hi! I used electronic shutter. I’d like to try again with first curtain and try some different shutter speeds. Just haven’t had a chance to get back out. I actually may have missed my chance! Haha! Thanks for watching! 😁
This is hummingbird season camera overheating is really annoying. I have R5 too and when the overheating warning is on and you cannot do nothing about it. BTY, you can set the third button to zone AF that helps you lock on the bird faster. So you will have Eye AF, Single and Zone AF.
I’ve had the R5 in a gym during my daughter’s volleyball games. So frustrating! I love the camera, but it’s not worth anything if it won’t turn on. Hopefully the issue is resolved with the mark II. Thats a great idea for a third back button focus option. 👍
It's a shame that the 200-800's lens buttons can't be used for focus recall like it can on the big white lenses. Being able to set a specific recall for a particular depth would actually add value to those lens buttons. Sadly, it doesn't appear that Canon intends to add this and not very many people even mention it as a valuable need. When that is entirely what I've been using it for on my 300mm f/2.8L since I got it.

Hey, thanks for watching! That 200-800 is so much fun to shoot with...and that's what this is all about, right? ...having fun! :)
@@matthewgehly Sure enough! And of course the beauty of digital is that we can practice and practice and practice and never run out of film.

Love how vibrant the colors are in the scene you photographed with the hummingbirds, very fun!
I appreciate it! It was a lot of fun to photograph in that spot!
Some great photos of what I’m sure is a difficult subject. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed the video! Hummingbirds are difficult in this scenario, but lots of fun! 👍
Keep up with hummingbirds 😂😂😂

I'm considering this 200-800 lens to pair with my r6mii. it seems fun and up for the job
It’s a great lens! I’m sure you’ll love it…if you can find one! Canon hasn’t been able to get enough on the market to meet the demand.
72 degrees and you need aircon on full? jeeez mate we have 108 degree here and i am dying each time in a park trying to get some birps.
Crazy that in 72 degrees the camera was overheating and not shooting in 4K 120fps!
@@matthewgehly i got the R7 and it never overheats even in extreme temperatures. strange
hi Matthew. did you use electronic shutter or mechanical, first curtain? this bird was very chilled with you so close.

Matthew, is that the Mossy Oak Graphics tape on your lens?
It is! Here's a link to purchase. Love this stuff! amzn.to/3SrjXkf

That would be a fantastic feature! It would be so beneficial in so many situations. Thanks for watching.
