Sharp Shots at ISO 25600? Capturing Birds in Flight in Extreme Low Light
One of the knocks on the Canon RF200-800 is that it's slow at the long end of the lens. During a recent shoot with short eared owls I decided to crank the settings of the Canon R5 Mark II all the way up to ISO 25600. See the results as I capture birds in flight in low light with this high ISO settings.

    I have found that if I put a very noisy images into Topaz that I often get banding, or artifacts (these are Sony images) - so my process is to partially denoise in Lightroom, then import into Topaz to finish clean up and sharpen. That works for me to give best results..

    Excellent! I've been shooting shortears hear in Montana this winter. I start with RF 200-800 lens until blue hour then switch to RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens. I have Topaz, but found ON1 Photo Raw 2025 even better for low light, high noise images. With the RF 200-800mm I get some good photos with smoot panning at shutter speed as low as 1/250 sec...I start at 1/2000 sec and bump down the shutter speed as it gets darker as the sun sets. The F2.8 lens at 200mm is amazing for really low light conditions!

      It’s so funny that you mention the 70-200. I have the EF version and I was literally just thinking that I need to have it with me next time. I might put it on the R7. I know the sensor and megapixels won’t be the same as a full frame, but the 1.4 will provide more reach. Always a trade off!

    Wow...very surprised by what the R5ii looks like at 25,600. I would have thought the noise at 25,600 would be somewhat similar the R1's at 25,600. Looking forward to the day when we can get a 45mp camera with the high-iso characteristics of a 24mp camera.

    You will get better result if you first run the RAW file through DXO PureRAW and then through Topaz. DXO will retain more details but will leave som noise, which Topaz can take care of. Give that combo a try. I've done presentations on the differences in our local nature photo community.

    • @matthewgehly
      @matthewgehly 3 дня назад

      Interesting! I'll have to try that. Back in the old days of analog video there was always that worry that everytime you would edit a video from tape to tape you would lose quality. I know that we're a long way beyond that, but I still have that worry every time I run a file in another program. Haha! Showing my age here!

    Although I'm mostly a small, perched bird kind of guy, one bird I'd like to get more of in flight is the Short Eared Owl. Almost makes me wish i still had my R5.... It's interesting though, even for perched birds, while a lot of folks are trying to keep there shutter speeds up, even for darker conditions, often with ISO's of like 3200, 6400, or even higher, I'm shooting at shutter speeds of like 1/20th to 1/60th, to keep my ISO at or below 800. No Topaz required 😉 But I'm using the same advice > take LOTS of shots. I almost always get some sharp ones 🙂 I've looked for the SEO's here in Nor Cal a couple times, but none yet this year ☹️ Going to look at eBird again now. Great video 👍 Thank you 🙂✝️l

    • @Chris_Wolfgram
      @Chris_Wolfgram 2 дня назад

      @matthewgehly no, no, I never shoot without a tripod.... Even with lighter gear, or bright light. I am a tripod addict 😀 But considering I'm shooting with a 1280mm reach equivalent, I think sharp 1/20th shots are still pretty amazing 🙂 Sometimes though, in even lower light, I'll use the timer, then focus, hit the shutter button, and get my hands all the way offline of my camera. Doing this, I can get sharp photos of 1 full second or longer. Great for perched Owls, Nighthawks and such.

    got the R7 with 100-500L and learned that high iso is not our enemy anymore. lightroom denoise makes it possible. i was thinking about the 200-800 for long time but end up with the 500mm and decided to crop in and use the faster AF as advantage over range. the slightly better/worse image quality depending on situation is totally fine for me. sometimes i still wonder if that was the right decision. how you get along with the 800mm? how is your experience and opinion over both lenses side by side if you can ONLY use the R7 body? fantastic shots! the snow makes it easier on the denoise i guess?

    • @matthewgehly
      @matthewgehly 3 дня назад

      You made the right decision. The 100-500 is my go to lens. It's a much better lens than the 200-800, but the 200-800 is a great lens for what it is. The R7 has the 1.4 crop sensor, so you're really not as far from 800 on a full sensor as you might think. The 800 is a lot of fun, but the image quality and faster speed of the 100-500 is the way to go. Lighter colors like the snow are better when shooting at these extreme ISOs, but I think that Topaz did a great job with the darker images.

    it's not too big or heavy...just wish it would focus...so far, after 3 weeks of testing, my keeper rate is so low that it's going back to Canon and if they can't fault it, it's being sold. I have zero need for a lens that doesn't work. My 25 year old 500mm prime, with a 1.4x TC and EF to RF adaptor absolutely smacks the RF200-800 to kingdom come with it comes to AF performance and sharpness. It has been a massive disappointment and great source of frustration for me.

    • @matthewgehly
      @matthewgehly 17 дней назад

      That really stinks that the 200-800 is missing focus. It sounds like you got a bad copy. Super frustrating, but it can happen. Honestly, I'm not surprised that a 25 year old EF prime still outperforms this lens. Even used 25 year old 500's are still about 3 times the price of this lens. I'll be interested to hear your opinion once you get the lens back and use it at its peak performance.

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern 17 дней назад

      @@matthewgehly yeah, that's what I'm hoping (that it's a bad copy). I have to collate the images from the other day and notate them to prove my points before contacting my contact at Canon CPS. I'm not a CPS member (not a working pro - in Australian, Canon will only give CPS membership to working pros who's income is derived from photography by at least 90%). Canon's consumer support is as useless as the proverbial and CPS have agreed to assist me with any issues. I never expected the RF200-800 to be as sharp as the EF 500mm - if it gets within 90-95% range, then I will still be happy with the lens. It's the focus issues that are making the lens worthless to me. A mark 1 500mm prime is around USD 3k at the moment, and this lens is around 2k, so not really 3x but 1.5x. I suspect you were referring to the mark 2 prime, which is probably close to 3x. My goal was to originally save for a mark 2 EF 600mm prime (selling my mark 1 500mm prime in the process), but that wasn't going to eventuate until ~2029, which is when Canon will stop providing spare parts and supporting the mark 2 super tele primes. So, I decided to get the RF200-800 with my existing savings, and wait until I retire in ~13 years and use my superannuation to buy a RF 600f4 prime. I may have even kept the 500mm prime and not sold it, given it is consistently dropping in price. Now this problematic RF 200-800 scuppers most of my intentions sadly and is causing me a great deal of frustration and anxiety, something that I don't need in my life for health reasons.

    As a photographer, I am always trying to make lemonade out of lemons. It's nice when things come together. You're hunting a huge area with a lot of fence posts. A lot of space to cover. One area I go to has two fields across the road from each other. So the seo's will fly in a loop around me while they fly back and forth. I sit so I can look down the fence line. Sooner or later they'll land on a post. SEO's are fun to photograph because they come back. Great horned just seem to leave. Find them and they leave again. Maybe the best place for you would be a place where the sun is on your passenger side? With some fence posts within reasonable range. I get my best photos in a place like that. Positioning is poor at a couple other locations I go to. The owls are there but the photos just won't be as good for me. Congratulations on the photos you did get.

    The exact results I thought, I almost always like to shoot alone. It not only gives you time to spend quietly in nature and enjoy yourself and I always have found that most people don't have the patience that I do when waiting for wildlife. When shooting large animals I usually like to have someone with me as long as I can outrun them. Thanks for a great poll.

    Why would you need a new CFEx card with the mkII? One thing you didn’t mention is that the battery drain appears to be much higher than with the mkI. a week ago I had to swap batteries twice on the mkII while the mkI was still happy on the first battery (these are all LP-6NH which have plenty of life left, and I am not going to use LP-6P for now; which means no wireless connectivity for now, for me). Considering inflation, the mkII itself is less expensive than the mkI (and sale price makes it even better); I wasn’t going to upgrade to the mkII, but what convinced me is how well the EC-AF works (after trying it on a buddy’s R1); that and the Christmas sale price 😂. I am not intending to sell my mkI at this time, though. The EC-AF might take some getting used to, but first impression is it feels extremely precise.

      I ended up buying the Mark II, but I needed a new CF Express card because I kept my Mark I. The Mark II sure does seem to drain batteries a lot quicker than the Mark I...I've been experimenting with different power settings to help.

    Most of my time out is spent alone, but part of that is just not having anyone to get out there with. I can really go either way on it. Several years ago we had a small group that would get together to shoot occasionally - not for wildlife though - but time and life have taken their toll. Often when I'm out alone I use the time for prayer as I'm walking and just reflecting on the magnificence of the creation that we get to be a part of. There is just something about being in nature that draws me closer to God. Sure, with the right people we can have some great conversations, so either is good.

      @matthewgehly Yes, through the gloves. I also have some nerve damage on my right index finger tip, so feeling the shutter button is hard. I shoot a lot of cross country ski races in Minnesota and barehanded is not the way to go for any length of time, so windproof liner gloves and a hand in the pocket or muff between shots is my try for this year.
