  • This is the 747 Jumbo Jet that Boeing bet the house on. It's very rare that the Museum of Flight offers tours of this aircraft, but for the month of August 2013 they've put it on display during the weekends.
    First flight in 1969 followed by a lengthy career until 1996 when it finished out testing engines for the 777 program. The museum is now in the process of slowly restoring the 747-100 close to what it looked like back in the 70's.

    In the late 1970's or early '80's I worked as a police photographer for the PD in Las Vegas, Nevada. One day, I got a call out at McCarren Airport - a man had broken through a fence and had tried to steal a parked airplane. He didn't get very far, but I had to go out and photograph the whole thing, a hole in the fence, a damaged car, etc. Fortunately, the airplane he was interested in was undamaged. While I was there, one of the Metro PD Airport Police Officers knew that I liked airplanes, so he put me in his official airport car and drove across the airport with his yellow lights flashing, talking to the tower, etc. He went to an area I had never seen before. And there it was! We parked next to a beautiful Emerald Green Boeing 747 - the first one ever made, he said. I got to get out and walk around under it. It was HUGE! I'll never forget it. It had "City of Everett" marked on the side. The green was a kind of preservative, maybe zinc chromate, I don't know. But it was beautiful, and huge! They were keeping it in Vegas for storage for a while. It's nice to know that this old friend finally made its way home! Well done, everybody! Well done Indeed! -- Old Man Bob

    My wife's father, Mr Edwin Gessele, just out out of Naval Aviation in 1948, only had two real jobs in life...The first was serving this country in the South Pacific in Naval Aviation and the 2nd was his 40 years with the Boeing Company in flight Test in Seattle where had the distinction of being the CREW CHIEF on this very airplane..for over 20 years. He flew most everywhere with RA001 in the many test programs it was used for. He was also the lead crew chief that accompanied all of the world sales demonstration tours including the 767 world sales tour after which he retired in 1988. He told us of many wonderful flights and events with this amazing airplane. Mr Gessele recently passed away at age 92 and he was truly a major part of the great old Boeing crews that somehow get overlooked today So we have this wonderful newly restored first of its kind 747 always to be remembered as the Queen of the Skies to remind us of him and his many co workers he often spoke of and those great years of service to Boeing many of which was spent in this very airplane. .

      Please do that!! I'd love to see your video of her fully restored. I saw her a few years back and was surprised the museum had let her deteriorate like she had. I know it costs a ton of money but it would seem like restoration would have been something obvious as time goes by. So as soon as you get the chance, PLEASE post your video of the restored City of Everette!!! What a beautiful aircraft.

      He gave his 707 to Quantas, I suppose as it had become a huge weight financially. Then he got certified for B747.

    • @terryofford4977
      @terryofford4977 6 лет назад +2

      Todays a/c have much of the basics taken from the 'old aircraft', I dare bet that Airbus will never sell as many Aircraft as Boeing. The 747 Jumbo was and still is a spectacular machine. I was saddened to see it in such a scruffy state but fortunately, time, and considerable dollars have been spent on this beutifu laircraft to be kept for posterity.
      As an ex Airforce guy I still consider that aircraft have 'personalities' and deserve respect, they should never be exhibited as 'worn out' wrecks.
