    What a marvelous piece of engineering this was. US manufactures could only dream of making something like this back in the day.

    • @tomwest8663
      @tomwest8663 7 лет назад +3

      valante7 US may not have had an airliner, but we did have the SR 71 BLACKBIRD that cruised at mach 3 + with two engines at 80,000 ft.

    • @RB747domme
      @RB747domme 6 лет назад +3

      tom west yes the SR-71 is an absolutely beautiful aircraft. And a technical marvel.
      But I would bear in mind, that it only carried two passengers, a pilot and a reconnaissance officer, who would both be wearing pressurised space suits, and had to pee into a leg bag strapped to their leg, and wore diapers.
      If you consider that Concorde flight ceiling was 63000 feet, then just imagine an SR-71 flying at 80000 feet, and looking down just 17000 feet below them is an aircraft that could fly 4000 miles without refuelling travelling at the Mac 2.1, with 110 passengers on board, with toilets, in air-conditioned comfort, sipping champagne and eating lobster..
      It puts it into perspective just what an incredible achievement both the SR-71 and Concorde were in the 1960s.
      It's a shame mankind went to sleep for 30 years and stopped dreaming of the future. I think they could have achieved an incredible amount of aeronautical brilliance had there not been economic, oil crisis, and political rows preventing development of new aircraft technologies.

    • @joeg5414
      @joeg5414 3 года назад

      That's a pretty bold statement considering the types of aircraft US manufacturers were producing back then.

    • @beagle7622
      @beagle7622 3 года назад +3

      @@RB747domme The Concorde could get up to 58,000 feet at the end of the cruise & cruised at Mach 2.00. That’s about 22000 ft below the SR71 but with passengers in considerable comfort eating the best food & drinking fine wines. Both the RAF & USAF tried to catch is when it was flying out over the Atlantic. They just ran out of fuel. It cruises faster than an F-18 for instance. I agree with everything you write, simply remarkable aircraft , both of them.

    how wonderful to see all those hi-tech analog instrumentation. during flight the engineer sitting behind the pilots would reach between them to handle some of the controls, made for more personal touches rather than those modern flight management systems. nice to know the Concorde is finally earning a profit charging museum entrance fees

      It was extremly polluting, extremly noisy, consumed extremly much. It was just a very expensive, uneconomic technical prestige project. When it was being developed then it could be known it would be never refunded.

    The irony is cold. An additional tire to keep tail strike from puncturing the fuel tank...and it was a blown tire that ended up puncturing the fuel tank and bringing an end to a flawless flight record, as well as the plane itself.

    Aircraft are undoubtedly the most impressive piece of engineering made by man. And among all times, varieties, shapes and functions Concord was, is and forever will be the most incredible, beautiful and timeless piece of airplane ever made. Aircraft world was surely more poor with its retirement. But it will never disappear from our minds. It will live forever.

    My father worked at British Aerospace. He was lucky enough to have a flight on Concorde and told me that you feel absolutely nothing when you break the sound barrier. The only indication is when you look up and see the speed indicator. He also met Brian Trubshaw who was one of the test pilots and told me he was a really lovely guy.

    What's the principle behind the yoke orientation? It looks kind of odd compared to other aircrafts. I know embraer uses kne but i never really understood the benefits of the m shaped yokes, I'm more or less a fan of the w or the sidestick.

    • @snoortpod6462
      @snoortpod6462 6 лет назад

      That's a ram's horn control column. It seems to have originated with the HS Trident and was transplanted onto Concorde. I wonder if it had something to do with the unusual wing configuration common to both types. The Trident required 'droops' or slats that couldn't be withdrawn below about 225 knots otherwise a stall situation would likely arise. In other words, both aircraft needed to be handled with care insofar as their lift characteristics were concerned and the ram's horn yoke is one way of carrying over such reminders as an embodied form of tradition through a common 'visual' design feature.

      I know, it had one terrible disaster, which had nothing to do with this fine Aircraft. It was down to a piece of metal, which came from a plane that took off before it. It punctured one of its tyres, which in turn punctured its wing fuel tanks. we all know the end result. I just hope we never see the likes again.

    This is a dreamliner for pilots and passengers, but unfortunately a Nightmareliner for economics.

      @ryo ga silly you. The performance of Tu-144 was comparable or better than Concorde's. Period.

      @@btr152 Definitely the Tupolev Tu-144 had a shorter range and was far from being reliable. That made the difference, apart from cabin noise. I wish she had been a better rival to Concorde and development of both supersonic airliners had been continued in their time. They would have been much better at both economy and ecology by the time they had been retired.

      The problem is they are so expensive to maintain, and a special crew to fly them, and they are terrible with fuel lol.

    The first time I boarded a Concorde, with a pal many years ago, when I looked into the cockpit I exclaimed loudly "Holy Sh*t!" ~ I was overcome with the impact of the glorious layout and instrumentation! Never forgot that experience. Whatta plane! Hope it makes a return one day.

      In a series of videos about the development of the Boeing 777 they talked about the development of the cup holder. Not as easy as I thought it would be . The pilot had to be able to reach it & they had to be sure it wouldn’t leak. Interesting though the effort that went into developing it.

    Think its that amazing that the fuselage expands so much due to the heat (ca. 130°C) on the planes outside.

    Thank you for uploading this marvelous video Demetris! Fascinating and I could easily spend hours going over everything on that flight deck.
    Concorde was truly the most iconic and beautiful airliner to ever grace the skies and could do what no other aircraft on earth could do, and it remains so to this day. The thinking that went into that aircraft was light years ahead of its time with autothrottle and autoland systems that were far superior even to those found in today’s aircraft.
    Even though it was an expensive and demanding plane to fly it still had many years of life remaining, without a viable successor in the offing. She should still be at 50K feet and cruising at Mach 2 but instead, a giant step backwards was taken when this marvelous plane was grounded for good. Very sad indeed.
