The “screen” you removed from the rear is called a spark arrestor and is there to keep possible exhaust sparks from escaping which could ignite a fuel source such as dry grass or anything else it comes in contact with. The key is to keep it clean, NOT remove it.
John Case yes i know. If I remember correctly I believe i made a disclaimer on removing it lol. But it is too restrictive and clogs up with carbon fast. No one wants to clean it every 10 hrs lol. Just be responsible and make sure its running in a good spot with out dry debris such as sticks leafs etc.
The screen is the spark arrestor not the silencer (disk thing made of crushed copper wire). If you're running your generator on the ground or anywhere sparks might be an issue (like the bed of a truck after you modified the egr so it now dumps raw fuel out of the bottom of the generator), you need to keep the spark arrestor screen, chuck the silencer. If you're running a genturi off of the exhaust, both items must go for max venturi affect. I highly recommend a venturi stack if anyone will be sleeping near the generator( like within 200 feet, even inside an rv).. The brand Genturi is kinda pricey but you can easily make one for less than $50.00. On mine, the exhaust temps enter the stack around 200-350 degrees, (depending on the load) and the exit temps are 70-80 degrees and carry all carbon monoxide up and out above your rv. There have been people killed from carbon monoxide poisonings while tent camping near a rv running a generator.
I have this model and I luv it,, it is stationary for home emergencies,, so I do not have the charcoal canister issue,, I'm making a wheel kit for it now,,, It is made from a Honda pressure washer frame,,, I cut all the frame cross bars so that it is the same width and shortened it length wise so that the generator wheels just rest where the frame curls in the corners,, Now my generator will have wheels and foldable handles to move it in and out of the garage,,
You only do this modification if you’re driving. If not leave it alone. Leave a stock. This was a big confusion for most people I assume. It’s good that this is clarified. Thanks
Mine does the same thing RPM's start going up and down then it dies out. Is what happened was the son was putting fuel in it and knock the fill neck screen in to the tank. That screen also has the tank vent built in to it. So no vapors or outside air could leave or enter the tank it acted like a fuel shutoff, and would starve for fuel and die. Since I got the two tear warranty I'm just dealing with it and leaving the cap a little loose. I've got 500 hours on it so far. Done a total of 3 oil changes 1st at 8hrs with conventional oil, 2nd at 25hrs with conventional oil again, 3rd at 50hrs with Mobile1 full synthetic, and haven't changed the oil since.
That’s a vent similar to that found on a lot of chainsaws, basically from the 90’s. They usually dump into the air filter with a piece of stranded wire in the end of the hose. Stihl 029, Ms 290 & 291 utilize a similar vent circuit. My big pro saws have a vent that pushes into the gas tank.
My gen ran crap for a while all because a bosh plug after moved to ngk all issues disappeared. I don't think bosh plugs are good for any small engine. Goog video great job brother
I took a chance and bought one on Craig's list with only 20 hours on it. Even though it had E10 stale gas, it started and ran on the rough side. Took it home and give it some TLC and 200 hours later, I ended up buying a second one from Harbor Freight when it was on special for paralleling it up for more capacity when needed. By no means it is a Honda EU3000, but it gets the job done with a few caveats. I'm not a fan of extended warranties since it is pretty much a pure profit margin for the insurance company. A good break-in marathon for the first 25 hours on a 1/3 load and hot oil changes at 8, 16, and 25 hours; pretty much it was rode hard and put away wet. If you have any issues, you'll know it before their 30 day exchange policy runs out. As for the running rich issue and clogged spark arrestor, I switched the default #76 carburetor main jet to a #72. I notice a lot less fouling of the spark plug and spark arrestor. Other mods, I did away with the electric start switch and made it my emergency engine kill switch since the fuel cut off switch allows the engine to run to burn out the gas in the carb in the "off" position.
On bypassing the charcoal canister, could you just remove it and put in a one check valve commonly sold for custom gas tanks. Allows gas tank to breath yet prevents vapors from going out?
my 3500 predator stop/run/start knob is not shutting off engine when I turn it to the off position, (400 hrs ) what part replacement would you recommend? Or what fix would you recommend? Thank you

What did we do in the old days before everyone worried about stuff like this? Its common sense. Never fuel a running engine. This engine has a huge huge muffler chances of any sparks finding their way out if the muffler is slim to NONE not to mention if your equipment isn’t running right it shouldn’t be being used. Common sense gos a long long way! You should not be using a generator unattended in any situation.

I don't know what's going on, I took out the air filter and gas was everywhere, I couldn't tell from your video but did you cap the hole on the air filter cover? Do you recommend this mod if my generator stay in the food truck while moving but never running while moving around? I would like not to do it just so I dont have any warranty issues in future.
If its not moving while running you should be fine. May I suggest at least getting a vented fuel cap. Harbor freight has a no questions asked warranty you literally take it back to them and they give you a new one.
Nice video... My concern is the inverter.. Is it modified sine wave or pure sine wave as some components do no operate properly and can be harmed while powered by an MSW inverter ..???

You could take a dump in a plastic box and it would be more useful than that charcoal canister. The ones on our cars have had to be replaced for a small fortune.

@@R.N.GPerformance True. It's not going to be running much but just warming up probably like 5 minutes or so but not flopping around but very little. The throttle was as stiff as a board when I got it so I took the breather cover off to loosen the nut a bit and got into all that mess. Cars were bad enough but now the smaller tuff has it. Mercy.
Lewie McNeely yeah its getting crazy with these little engines. I try to always delete all that stuff. The engine will run way better and last far longer with out it.
Weird my honda runs fine no matter how i transport it, or where i use it.. i dont have to modify anything js The hose to nowhere is probably to drain the fuel bowl before storage
Your Honda probably also don’t have a EVAP system on it either. Because if it did you would be in the same boat. Your Honda probably has a vented fuel cap. The hose to nowhere gos to the carb vent.

@@jredd801 literally no difference between a vent cap and the way I vented it. The only real difference is a vent cap will let moisture in. And the way i did it using the charcoal canister it wont so the fuel will last longer.
Y would you vent ur overflow of gas into the bed of ur truck. That looks like a accident waiting to happen. Just my thought. Maybe find a vented gas cap. U might b on the right path just a different ending.
Venting the way i did is the exact same as a vented fuel cap. Not to mention the venting i did still utilizes the charcoal canister just like they intended. So the fumes are still filtered. With a vented cap moisture can get in the fuel and is Susceptible to rain. Plus my vent is right beside the carb vent that don’t run through a charcoal canister. So either way you go your still getting venting under the machine.
My guess is that you over filled the gas tank and gas ran down the vent tube and saturated the canister with raw gas. Also, why not plug the vent hose at the tank and put a vented cap on it?

And you better have a really well thought out Idea about what you thought was wrong. Some of the mods he did make it easier to use and make it perform better, but they're not in compliance with rules the engineers have to follow with regard to emissions and safety. The charcoal canister is there to trap fuel vapor so it doesn't vent directly to the atmosphere.
Screen got dirty because it was running rich from being in your truck. Also to be fair, that screen is required if you will use the generator in any state/national forest.
Jeremy K. It ran in my truck for like a hour. We do not travel to state forest places witch is the main reason we took it out. We like camping away from people kinda the point lol. The mods ive done this thing is running much much better smoother and even easier on fuel. No engine out if the box runs like it Truly should because of emissions. Emissions go out the window when i get my hands on things lol. A property tuned engine will run for a very very long time.

Well a few reasons. 1 that cost money and my channel is all about saving people money. 2 no engine should be set up this way. 3 if you out a jet in and get it running right in your garage then you go camping on a cooler day it may run too lean. You cant control the weather and thats going ti play a huge roll in how much the fuel vents its pressure out of the tank. This way you dont have to worry about it at all. And its still vented through the canister and then out so win win. Its done right. Its done for free. And you dont have to worry about it ever running too lean. Gas isnt going to drip anyways because its going through the canister. Also the carb is vented through the bottom you have more chance of fuel coming from that vent then you do my vent. And this machine has a huge muffler on it chances of a spark are slim to non. Plus you can make much better of a spark arrester if your that worried about it. Me on the other hand im not worried.

I did get the dual fuel carburetor kit. I think it was only thirty bucks. I just haven't had the time to commit to installing it start to finish. As far as the extended run external tank, it is quite pricey. I do like the "fuel pump" aspect of it as opposed to gravity feed. I've been hoping to find someone with a less expensive alternative.

I'm hoping it's powerful enough to run a large reptile room in the event of a power outage. I'm pretty excited about having this rig.

Could be the knob its self. Ot it could be the kill switch inside. Would have to figure out witch part of the system is broke.

You’re welcome. It shouldn’t give too much issues because the engine is staying put fuel isn’t sloshing around.
@@R.N.GPerformance True. It's not going to be running much but just warming up probably like 5 minutes or so but not flopping around but very little. The throttle was as stiff as a board when I got it so I took the breather cover off to loosen the nut a bit and got into all that mess. Cars were bad enough but now the smaller tuff has it. Mercy.
Lewie McNeely yeah its getting crazy with these little engines. I try to always delete all that stuff. The engine will run way better and last far longer with out it.

Your Honda probably also don’t have a EVAP system on it either. Because if it did you would be in the same boat. Your Honda probably has a vented fuel cap. The hose to nowhere gos to the carb vent.

@@jredd801 literally no difference between a vent cap and the way I vented it. The only real difference is a vent cap will let moisture in. And the way i did it using the charcoal canister it wont so the fuel will last longer.

Yes. I took the vent out of the Air intake for the Carburetor and moved it.
By removing the spark arrester (the exhaust screen), the generator is no longer legal for use in National Parks.

Y would you vent ur overflow of gas into the bed of ur truck. That looks like a accident waiting to happen. Just my thought. Maybe find a vented gas cap. U might b on the right path just a different ending.
Venting the way i did is the exact same as a vented fuel cap. Not to mention the venting i did still utilizes the charcoal canister just like they intended. So the fumes are still filtered. With a vented cap moisture can get in the fuel and is Susceptible to rain. Plus my vent is right beside the carb vent that don’t run through a charcoal canister. So either way you go your still getting venting under the machine.
My guess is that you over filled the gas tank and gas ran down the vent tube and saturated the canister with raw gas. Also, why not plug the vent hose at the tank and put a vented cap on it?
It’s because the fumes from the tank. On really hot days all that pressure gos in to the carb.

Some of the mods he did make it easier to use and make it perform better, but they're not in compliance with rules the engineers have to follow with regard to emissions and safety. The charcoal canister is there to trap fuel vapor so it doesn't vent directly to the atmosphere.

Screen got dirty because it was running rich from being in your truck. Also to be fair, that screen is required if you will use the generator in any state/national forest.
Jeremy K. It ran in my truck for like a hour. We do not travel to state forest places witch is the main reason we took it out. We like camping away from people kinda the point lol. The mods ive done this thing is running much much better smoother and even easier on fuel. No engine out if the box runs like it Truly should because of emissions. Emissions go out the window when i get my hands on things lol. A property tuned engine will run for a very very long time.
@@R.N.GPerformance not disagreeing just saying you can't remove the spark arrestor (the screen) for forest camping, which is often boondocking camping away from people. Just felt people should know that. Also running super rich for 10 minutes can clog the screen, let alone an hour. Cheers!

Well considering harbor freight dont take it apart or anything it wont be voided. HF just hands you a new one. No question asked. You take yours in and say its broke they hand you a brand new one. They are literally the only company that does this.

Tell me you ain’t living life with out telling me you ain’t living life 😂. If your exhaust is throwing sparks it’s because something is wrong with your engine. Or. You have a performance engine. In this case i know my engine is running tip top shape and its not a racing engine shooting flames 🔥 i have no need to worry about sparks making it out of the exhaust. I sure wish common sense was more common these days. Why not just replace the jet for a smaller one? Gas dripping, sparks flying. hummmmmmmmmm.
Well a few reasons. 1 that cost money and my channel is all about saving people money. 2 no engine should be set up this way. 3 if you out a jet in and get it running right in your garage then you go camping on a cooler day it may run too lean. You cant control the weather and thats going ti play a huge roll in how much the fuel vents its pressure out of the tank. This way you dont have to worry about it at all. And its still vented through the canister and then out so win win. Its done right. Its done for free. And you dont have to worry about it ever running too lean. Gas isnt going to drip anyways because its going through the canister. Also the carb is vented through the bottom you have more chance of fuel coming from that vent then you do my vent. And this machine has a huge muffler on it chances of a spark are slim to non. Plus you can make much better of a spark arrester if your that worried about it. Me on the other hand im not worried.

Im doing the extended run mod also this winter.
I did get the dual fuel carburetor kit. I think it was only thirty bucks. I just haven't had the time to commit to installing it start to finish. As far as the extended run external tank, it is quite pricey. I do like the "fuel pump" aspect of it as opposed to gravity feed. I've been hoping to find someone with a less expensive alternative.
