Easily Moog's best synth since the Model D. It's like a Model D genetically crossbred with an ARP Odyssey (paraphonic duophony, 2-pole filter setting) & a VCS3 (latching and looping envelopes, arpeggiator/sequencer, increased modulation capabilities, 3-pole filter setting). Not that it sounds like either of those 2 synths, but it's nice to know that some very criminally underrated functionality of those 2 synths are finally being considered by somebody in the modern synth market.
BEST PART OF THE VIDEO. At about 7:00 he's demonstrating feedback/distortion/drive and he looks up at the camera with a subtle "Holy ****!!!" look. Super heavy and I totally get it. Intending to utilize this particular function a lot. Thanks for the demo, very helpful.

Very nice and thorough review of the Moog Sub 37's amazing features. It can of course only touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the capabilities of this amazing machine. This is one of a few very good reviews I have seen on RUclips that have swayed me to get one, regardless of how little I can afford one. I just think that I cannot afford not to have one, a sentiment with which I am sure many viewers of this video share. By the way, the sound at the end of the video is absolutely amazing. Lovely patch.
+Hakon Soreide Oh my... I just realised I used the word "amazing" three times in only a few small paragraphs. I guess that's what the Moog 37 does to you...
Same here. But I got a Pro 3 instead, and I'm happy I did. Same price, same size, same overall concept... but vastly expanded sonic capabilities and somehow also easier to use.
Brilliant detail in this video. Amos helped me decide on the voyager old school a few years back with video demos and the two of you have helped me decide to place my sub 37 tribute order today. It'll be Worth the wait. A lot of synth for the money. 😊
I bought mine last week Nick, and your review really points out what I love about it so far. Having previously owned a Slim and Voyager, they are each their very own distinct animals, but the 37 is hitting the mark with my over-acute sense of analogue growliness. Love it. :)
Excellent synth!! and you can really tell the difference that real VCOs make here (vs some other competitors that use digital oscillators through analog filters - just not the same)
Beyond the fact that this is a sublimely engineered piece of synth sound equipment, its physical design is superb! The silky smooth wood end pieces contrast nicely with the brushed-polished, heavy gauge, die-bent, and creviced aluminum back, the quality plastic knobs, the amber push button LEDs-it's a jewel of a synth machine! It's a fantastic piece of kit (to use the oft-used Brit slang). Gorgeous design, phenomenal and luxurious sound, awesome instrument. A winner.
about to get one, already have the slim phatty, thinking to go one into the other. the moog folks suggested going into the SP first, then out into the audio in of the 37 with a midi connector linking them. then i could run the SP into the 37 in terms of oscillators, etc. should be very fat
Nick, thank you so much for all those amazing reviews. You brought it into perfection all these different camera angles and automated crops I just love it and you can't do it better. Thanx thanx thanx.
I obviously missed that this was even announced / released thinking this was the 'Sub Phatty', but WOW I really like this! Seriously thinking of getting this one. Great review and very informative as always! :D
great, great, great, review Nick. Thanks a lot for doing these, much appreciated to us synthesizer geeks! I really wish you would review the Prophet 12 & the Pro 2. It's a shame DSI doesn't send you a couple of their synthesizers, such a shame from their end!
I really do like this sound of the Sub 37. I've been hearing a lot of the pushed/driven sound on 37 demos. It's a different beast than the Voyager, which is of course a different beast from the original model d. Can the Sub 37 get those Voyager-like full, warm, CLEAN, ooey-gooey analog tones? How would you (or anyone reading) compare the clean tones of the Sub 37 to those from the Voyager? To my ears, the Sub 37 has a little more edge, a little less fullness (?) in comparison. Thanks.
I can always get a good opinion from Nick on any kind of synth gear. Which is important because I just bought a new Sub 37 for my 60th birthday. Having a Moog reminds me of my days as a concert goer during the 70s. I love actually playing keyboard synths but will also enjoy the seq and arp features. Now all I need is a big Leslie speaker to go with it.
just got one and it is the business, could have built a modular but this has got more than enormous possibilities to keep me busy for a long time, by by world while I get lost in synth world, just got to remember to press record now and than..
17:09 bath salts, should I be worried about you Nick? But seriously, another great review. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I'll have to check this out myself.
Thanks Nick! I avoided any info or hype about this because I knew my GAS would go thru the roof... Boy I was right. That is one DAMN impressive synth. I could see me losing my Moog virginity to this! I wish the review was longer - I could listen to those sounds all day long! Great intro and outtro sounds!
Hi Mike!Maybe you have heard that the limited edition is over now. Instead there is the Substiquent 37 and Substiquent 37 CV with some so called improvments. The thing is that I got my Sub 37 last monday. After some years of longing for it. Do you Think it was a bad buy? Musically yours Liselotte (And what's the sound in the beginning of the demo? One of the presets?
theeltea I've heard they are susceptible to temperature changes, like stage lights. But I thought they were very reliable overall in a studio environment.
I second the reviewer's final comments on value for money. This synth isn't cheap in absolute terms, but for what you get, it's superb. Spoiler: there is so much more you can get out of the synth than was shown here. The modulation routings are just a universe in themselves. I've only got mine for 4 weeks, and every session uncovers more "Wow" realisations. This is a synthesizer with superlative potential. Adding a reverb/delay is a must though.. it makes this animal take off into space..
TheGreatUtopiaCat Hey! For reverb and delay, definitely try the free Reaktor ensembles from Boscomac. It's some of the dreamiest stuff I've ever heard. Look at Echophonic, Floodverb, Springtime, and Stellar (which is a unique combo of verb, phaser, tremolo, and pitch shift). All his stuff is top-notch.
Fast forward to 2018: Now that the Grandmother is out, does anyone in these comments own both? If you could only have one, which one would you keep, and why?
thanks for the vid! I got 2 questions. first: can you record live? that is: play in the sequence live with the keyboard while the the midi clock from external gear is running? and the second question: what happens when you switch between sound banks, do you loose the midi clock (from external gear)? by that i mean: when you chained the sub 37 as a slave to the master device and wanna play another sound bank while the whole thing is running, do you loose midi clock? Because obviously if you are a live act you don't wanna change to another bank and suddenly loose midi while you are playing live!
It can do a lot of things. One thing it cannot do is modulate one oscillator with the audio of the other oscillator. (Also known as FM or cross modulation). If this is important to you get a Voyager, Little/slim Phatty or Model D.
Moog is working on a software editor for the 37. As always, thanks for the fantastic review. Learned something about a synth we already own! When do we get to see you jamming on the Simmons kit? ;-)
4What I now know after owning my Sub 37 since July'14, is the price is a *steal* for what you get and what Amos, one of the engineers on forum often, has stated they are further developing as far as user suggestions, and even further modulation sequencing per step, making the sequencing and arp while doing duophonic just addictive as all get out. Love this synth!
@@swingdash Thanks for replying. To clarify: what I'm looking for is an option for the glide to take the same amount of time regardless of the distance between the two notes. Hydrasynth has amazing control over the curve shape (exponential, logarithmic and linear) but as far as I know, the time taken for the glide remains dependant on the note interval - unless something was changed in an update? I haven't used my HS for a while but I will do soon (studio being built!) so I'll check then.
Can you give each of the VCOs its own separate envelope for volume and filter? so you could have a nice snappy click on VCO 1 but a long pad-like envelope on VCO 2 ? Or are you stuck with putting everything through the same envelopes?
Oh boy, makes me wonder if my decision to order a Dominion 1 was correct. Not really, but unless I finally get it at the end of the month I will from now on live with a little doubt. Thanks for the great reviews.
Would this be a good starter synth? I want to make some music (a digital cd) and my only experience is being classicly trained on piano and harpsichord and playing on my moms old organ (which reminds me of this!!! So much fun when I was a kid!!!) :-) Also does this have the ability to sound like an electric piano at all? Thanks! Great demo!!!
Honestly for a starter synth this is a bit overkill, I own 4 at the moment and none are as complex as this. It would take a long time to get to grips with this you're better off starting out with something like a microbrute to get the basics or for something more pricey the minilogue. Also this synth only plays 2 notes so you can't do chords, the brute only plays 1 though so if you're expecting to play it like a piano then it won't work like that. Google "synthesizer sympathizer buying your first" and you'll find a guide going into all the details you need
Depends on your budget, and if you're aware of the limitations of a mono/duophonic synth like this (one or two notes at a time, not like the instruments you mentioned). The Moog is a fantastic synthesizer and will be one you'd hold on to if you bought one. My first synth was a Dave Smith Mopho desktop, which is more difficult to program than this but you just need to read the manual and understand subtractive synthesis to get what you want. The Moog has buttons and knobs for easy control, and its a synth you can learn on and appreciate more as you gain experience. If you've got the money and are a serious musician, you'll learn it and not regret it. If you're on a budget, there are other options. Everyone and their mom will mention the microbrute, it's a good value, but it won't sound like a Moog and I don't think it's quite as playable as this one is, aside from the Moog having more features.
Why not? Price is good. Looks solid. Quite hands on. If it's in your budget, you can't go too wrong with this. Just note that it's mostly a mono synth. If you want to play 6 notes at a time, look for something else.
I can’t get on with mine, I’ve had it for years and never use it. For some reason I just don’t enjoy using it. It’s good for blips, squelchy noises, plips n plonks, but I just don’t find it very musical. I’m yet to hear/see anything usable.
Excellent review Nick. I've owned my Moog Sub 37 since August and it is definitely one of my favorite synths that I currently own (and I have a pretty healthy collection of synths!) And as much as I play with it, this review reminds me just how deep the Sub 37 actually is... here is a little retro sci-fi tune (with appropriate retro sci-fi visuals) I did with only the Sub 37 - ruclips.net/video/vq2RG5jpTT4/видео.html
The above reply is most certainly NOT SPAM. That man's awesome first demo was what made me buy mine from a dealer that had one lone extra Sub 37 and his further excellent musical use of Sub 37 in various ways sonically, must have simply caused some 'sour grapes' for some creep to try to label it as spam. "Language is a virus from outerspace..."; Wm. S. Burroughs
Robert I Thank you, I appreciate that. I just try to show what can be done with the synth in various contexts, it shocks me that anyone would take offense from that or be jealous (and if they don't like my style of music, fine, don't listen, but they don't have to report it as spam! Especially when I was praising this video here!)
You already know the answer... Both. I dunno I love the the fact I owned a Mini but the Sub has the two oscillators and is cheaper yeah? I'd go with the Sub 37 and wait on a used Voyager for later times.
We have a 37, little phatty and a voyager. Thing to remember with the 37, the sub oscs are square only, no FM. If you want the classic minimoog sounds, well, only way is the voyager. We love the distortion in the 37, paraphonic playing is addictive, we can't keep our hands off of this thing. You might consider getting a couple or 3 slim phattys in poly-chain and using a midi keyboard if you more into poly. They are each their own animal.
Hello Nick! What is that starting sound? A preset, or your own patch? Musically yours Liselotte in Sweden P.S. Have you tried the Minimood D app on SonicState? So far, I haven't seen it, but maybe I've missed it??
Nick, your reviews are the absolute best! When you threw up that matrix of "program destinations" my first thought was "AWESOME!" My second thought was "do I really have to use that tiny screen to set these?" Since this has a USB out, any idea if there is software that would allow you to set the destinations using your computer screen?
Great review Nick! I'm at the moment deciding between a Sub 37 and a MFB Dominion 1 as my first mono analog synth. Would you think it would be possible or in Sonic State plans to review one of those? I've been hours checking all the videos available in RUclips, but it is still difficult for me to decide. I have tried a Sub 37 in person and I liked it, but the raw power of the MFB and its possibilities for future expansion into a modular are really tempting... Anyways, again congratulations... great review as always.
sonicstate Totally understandable. Hopefully they'll ship you one soon as a Christmas present ;) Thanks again for the great work. Totally hooked to this channel
The sub 37 is destined to be a classic. It should hold its value very well. Think of it as an investment you can play. A true piece of art. I haven't purchased one yet but it's calling my name.
Why do the Sub 37 oscillators sound SO MUCH better than the Prophet 6? I thought that the prophet for the price would parallel with the sub37 but it has none of the juicy goodness that the sub37 has. I mean every time I play the sub37 I cannot stop myself, whereas with the prophet I'm often struggling to find a sound I dig...
I cant answer this, but the P6 does use a different filter than the Moog. My P12 can sound a lot like my Sub 37, even with the fact the P12 has digital oscillators and a Curtis filter, but there's definitely a difference I hear at times, and I think of it as partly due to the P12's sawtooth being a bit bright/harsh, but mainly the Moog filter. If the P6's waves are a bit harsh, don't hesitate to use the LPF filter a bit, that's what it's there for. Personally I could part with my Moog before my other synths due to it's limited presets, but it has a bit of this in your face thing maybe lacking on my digital synths. It's hard to pin down or explain, but it seems less tamed, and sometimes clashes with my other synths - which is probably not a bad thing; I certainly didn't need a clone of what I already had :)
This is a beast. But I like the pro 2 from Dave smith more versatile and also takes the paraphonic feature a bit further. Like to see a review of that one over here.
But the Pro 2 will NEVER sound like a Moog, let alone all the new nuances of new sonic territories this Sub 37 covers. I bought the Sub 37 over the Pro 2 because I have the DSI Mono Evolver Keyboard poly chained to a Poly Evolver Rack, which still think Evolver is Dave's best ever synth. There's some new wild functionalities being added to the Sub 37 in an update in near future. The sequencer on Sub 37 is fantastic and is simple to understand. The Sub 37 has been the most creativity inspiring synth I have bought in a long time and cannot stop playing it. Nice review, Nick!
What a totally spellbinding review of an even more stupendous synthesizer. I was literally gob-dropping the whole time at what this little monster can achieve, but more importantly.. in what ways it accomplishes it. It's such a shame really that the music doesn't reflect the wizard like technology of today's golden comeback. Thank you Moog for all your hard work. It shows. Now.. how am I to get 12 'undred quid!
Hey Nick, brand new to the synth world. Soon as I heard this I knew I was getting it. First question: Do you need amplification for this (like an electric guitar)? Or does the sub37 come with built in speakers? If it doesn't what would you recommend for amplification? Thanks so much in advance and what a killer review. I'm a gear snob in other area's of my life and I read/watch reviews like a madman before purchasing anything and your review was great fun to watch. Cheers!
I'm American. I don't say "moge" either. I was a kid when I first saw their use in a music video for The Rentals, friends of P. To me, it said "moo-g" and that's how it stayed in my mind. Honestly that sounds more synthy to me anyway.
Matt Greer Music - you rogue! Or is that roog? I’m in the U.K. and the first person I heard pronouncing it ‘mogue’ made me think - ahh bless they’ve not read the name properly.
Thanks Nick, I think you do a great job selling, and reviewing this instrument. I appreciate your thoroughness... now I have to come up with the cabbage... or... keep saving, and get the voyager... or ...the Emerson fully modular setup... :)

If you are reading this wondering “Should I get this?” DO IT NOW it’s the best thing ever.
This is such a great demo
I love the loop and latch functions on the envelopes. Self modulation built in. Damn I miss my Andromeda A6
Dare I ask why you sold/lost the Andromeda?
zerix01 He probably didn't want it fail on him...
theeltea I've heard they are susceptible to temperature changes, like stage lights. But I thought they were very reliable overall in a studio environment.
zerix01 I'm constantly hearing that A6s aren't that reliable and that spare parts are nonexistent
Adding a reverb/delay is a must though.. it makes this animal take off into space..
any recommendations for external FX? I have a korg m3 should I just run it through that?
TheGreatUtopiaCat Hey! For reverb and delay, definitely try the free Reaktor ensembles from Boscomac. It's some of the dreamiest stuff I've ever heard. Look at Echophonic, Floodverb, Springtime, and Stellar (which is a unique combo of verb, phaser, tremolo, and pitch shift). All his stuff is top-notch.
Impressive review Nick - great pre-filming research on your part. Great review as a result.
looks, sounds and seems extremely gorgeous.
Fast forward to 2018: Now that the Grandmother is out, does anyone in these comments own both? If you could only have one, which one would you keep, and why?
Bouhgt the newer subsequent, 64 note sequencer for starters.
thanks for the vid!
I love my pro 2 but this compliments it so well! Get both!
Excellent in depth review Nick. A fantastic synth thats seriously fat and packs unbelievable sonic abilities for the price. An absolute beast !
Amazing synth.Great review.
When do we get to see you jamming on the Simmons kit? ;-)
It's been out for a while. You get a download link when you register your Sub 37, and it works great. Stand alone and hosted versions.
Few people are so technically knowledgeable and can play so nicely. I'm truly impressed.
it actually seems like a good price for how much you get out of it and how great it looks
Man this look pretty. I never understood why the connection ports are on the left side of the unit.
When do you think you will get the Prophet 6 in mate? I've been having sleepless nights waiting for it to land!
First time a ad popt up thats related to the video (a 5.30 min from moog sub 37)
I like the options on the glide time. Wish ASM would put the same thing into the Hydrasynth! It's my only gripe with it so far.
this is possible in the hydrasynth’s menu under the ‘voice’ section
@@swingdash Thanks for replying. To clarify: what I'm looking for is an option for the glide to take the same amount of time regardless of the distance between the two notes. Hydrasynth has amazing control over the curve shape (exponential, logarithmic and linear) but as far as I know, the time taken for the glide remains dependant on the note interval - unless something was changed in an update? I haven't used my HS for a while but I will do soon (studio being built!) so I'll check then.
i love how you clear up mooog everytime !
Can you give each of the VCOs its own separate envelope for volume and filter? so you could have a nice snappy click on VCO 1 but a long pad-like envelope on VCO 2 ? Or are you stuck with putting everything through the same envelopes?
Did anyone noticed Access Virus logo T-shirt :)?
Hearing about the discontinuation of the Slim Phatty I thought I'd come back and dream about the Sub 37... one day you will be mine...
You are petting the synth like a cat, and I don't blame you!
give your car a meal and fresh water !! they also are perfectly built.
Thanks! Great demo!!!
oh also, if I wanted to get a little of the OLD Moog sound of the 1960's would this be able to do that?
Thank you. I decided to go for the Minimoog D. Your response was very helpful. Just have to wait a bit for the arrival. :-)
It’s definitely musical and capable of all kinds of basses, leads, pads, percussion, etc. Just take the time to learn the synth.
the knobs on the Little Phatty had a slight latency, is the Sub 37 the same?
Hello! a really nice track, very enjoyable.
l cant decide whether to get one of these or the Voyager. More features in this but the Voyager is the direct decendent of the Minimoog IMO
You already know the answer... Both. I dunno I love the the fact I owned a Mini but the Sub has the two oscillators and is cheaper yeah? I'd go with the Sub 37 and wait on a used Voyager for later times.
Yeh, good idea ha
We have a 37, little phatty and a voyager. Thing to remember with the 37, the sub oscs are square only, no FM. If you want the classic minimoog sounds, well, only way is the voyager. We love the distortion in the 37, paraphonic playing is addictive, we can't keep our hands off of this thing. You might consider getting a couple or 3 slim phattys in poly-chain and using a midi keyboard if you more into poly. They are each their own animal.
Just get a Model D if you're after the sound of the Mini.
Great review!. And the item is a steal at that.. I mean.. I was expecting it to cost twice as much for all that functionality and quality
Hello Nick! What is that starting sound? A preset, or your own patch? Musically yours Liselotte in Sweden P.S. Have you tried the Minimood D app on SonicState? So far, I haven't seen it, but maybe I've missed it??
Nick, your reviews are the absolute best!
When you threw up that matrix of "program destinations" my first thought was "AWESOME!" My second thought was "do I really have to use that tiny screen to set these?"
Since this has a USB out, any idea if there is software that would allow you to set the destinations using your computer screen?
What do you have the sub 37 hooked up to? Are you running it through any kind of preamp?
Cherry Glazerr has one of these in their live setup
Great review Nick! I'm at the moment deciding between a Sub 37 and a MFB Dominion 1 as my first mono analog synth. Would you think it would be possible or in Sonic State plans to review one of those? I've been hours checking all the videos available in RUclips, but it is still difficult for me to decide. I have tried a Sub 37 in person and I liked it, but the raw power of the MFB and its possibilities for future expansion into a modular are really tempting... Anyways, again congratulations... great review as always.
I would go for the Dominion. The Sub 37 will get cheaper with time and in case you want to interchange
Believe me I have been trying to get hold of a review unit since MESSE this year, but its proven harder than I would have hoped.
sonicstate Totally understandable. Hopefully they'll ship you one soon as a Christmas present ;) Thanks again for the great work. Totally hooked to this channel
will the sub37 get cheaper? Or will it be discontinued and become really expensive
The sub 37 is destined to be a classic. It should hold its value very well. Think of it as an investment you can play. A true piece of art. I haven't purchased one yet but it's calling my name.
hey guys , i want to ask , is this a weaker and cheaper version of voyager , or is this a completely different bird?
I think I just had an eargasm listening to this
Great review as always Nick! Thank you!
Thank you for a great review! Nick, What are you using for reverb on the last patch? Thanks again!
Yep reverb and a touch of delay.
sonicstate Sorry, it was just the internal FX from the Yamaha DM1000 desk we have here.
Did you start using motorized camera heads for your videos? :)
I would have loved to hear something about the duophonic mode.
03:07 just had an eargasm
What a totally spellbinding review of an even more stupendous synthesizer. I was literally gob-dropping the whole time at what this little monster can achieve, but more importantly.. in what ways it accomplishes it. It's such a shame really that the music doesn't reflect the wizard like technology of today's golden comeback. Thank you Moog for all your hard work. It shows. Now.. how am I to get 12 'undred quid!
thanks for showing me new tricks Nick. Please do a part 2 and 3. :)
Excellent review again!
Great Review. Great Synth and spot on analysis!
Nick, can you tell us if the subsequent 37 is an as good choice ? do we lose anything on the subsequent ?
Hey Nick, brand new to the synth world. Soon as I heard this I knew I was getting it. First question: Do you need amplification for this (like an electric guitar)? Or does the sub37 come with built in speakers? If it doesn't what would you recommend for amplification?
Thanks so much in advance and what a killer review. I'm a gear snob in other area's of my life and I read/watch reviews like a madman before purchasing anything and your review was great fun to watch. Cheers!
You do need an external amp. I just use the Fender Blues Junior that I use for my guitar and it sounds brilliant.
A lot of people like to shit on this synth these days but it's one of my favorites. It has a rich full sound and a lot of performance control.
Thanks Nick, I think you do a great job selling, and reviewing this instrument. I appreciate your thoroughness... now I have to come up with the cabbage... or... keep saving, and get the voyager... or ...the Emerson fully modular setup... :)
do you have a soundcloud? those were some class sounds I was hearing.. definitely wanted this since they were released. A+ Demo as usual
This machine is awesome, and glad to see you do a review Sonic Lab. It's expensive and worth the namesake, who knows if I would ever get one.
