In 1994 Alice in Chains released their second EP - Jar of Flies - one of my favourite releases from the band. It featured the haunting and powerful song 'Nutshell'. Today, let’s take a deep dive into to the song, it’s meaning and it’s lasting legacy. I also want to hear from you guys your thoughts on the song and what you think it means. So sit back, relax, and let's journey through the world of Alice in Chains!"
"Alice in Chains, was formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987. The band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Layne Staley, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Starr, and drummer Sean Kinney. The band took its name from Staley's previous group, Alice N' Chains." - kind of like Guns N’ Roses.
Alice in Chains quickly became a prominent part of the so-called grunge movement, alongside other Seattle bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Their sound, however, was deeply rooted in heavy metal, and great harmonies. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell told the Age in 1994 “i’ve always been a fan of bands that had great harmonies. I love heavy music and i love heavy rock, but you want a marriage between the two. I’m not into bands that just play speed thrash stuff.”
"The band's debut album, 'Facelift,' released in 1990 featured the hit single 'Man in the Box.' The album's success helped Alice gain a dedicated following and established them as one of the leading bands of the grunge era being the first band of the big 4 of grunge to have a gold album. ." I feel like facelift is often overlooked in the band’s discography. There’s some great tracks in addition to man in the box - bleed the freak (really like the live version), we die young, sea of sorrow.and it ain’t like that.
"In early 1992, the group released their first EP SAP. It proved to be another successful release, going gold and produced a successful hit in the song Got Me Wrong - which appeared in the movie Clerks. It provided a glimpse into the softer side of the band, something they tapped into for their jar of flies release.
By the end of 92, Alice released released what is arguably their crown jewel of their career and one of the most brutally dark and honest records of the grunge era, 'Dirt,' The album included hits like 'Would?' 'Rooster,' Them Bones, Down in a Hole, Angry Chair and and it showcased the band's ability to blend heavy riffs with introspective and dark lyrics." Dig a little deeper and you’ll find some other great tracks - my personal favourite Rain When I Die Dam That River.and Junkhead.
During and after the tour of 'Dirt,' Alice faced a period of turmoil. Frontman Layne Staley's struggles with addiction were becoming more pronounced, and the group fired original bassist Mike Star was fired from the band in early 1993 due to his drug use. But at the time the band told the press, the split was having to do with priorities. Alice claimed they wanted to keep touring, while mike wanted to be home.. He was replaced with Ozzy bassist and one time tourmate Mike Inez.
By the summer of 93, hot off the heels of playing, lollapalooza the Alice wanted to hit the studio again. They told their label Columbia that they had hundreds of songs written, when in reality they hadn’t written anything. They told the same story to producer Tobi Wright who was chosen to work on the album. He had spoken to jerry prior to hitting the studio in seattle and asked that the band send him the songs they were working on to which jerry responded that by the time they sent them to the producer they’d already be done. Jerry instead, told Wright to meet the band in Seattle. When Wright showed up, Jerry told him, they had no songs. So Wright asked him, what he wanted to do, since London Bridge Studios was booked for 10 days.
Is it okay if we just jam for the next ten days?” Jerry asked.
“Yeah. Best band in the world, jamming? What bad could happen? I didn’t have anything better to do,” was Wright’s response
Drummer Sean Kinney remarked to Guitar World
"After playing loud music for a year, we'd come home and the last thing we wanted to do was crank up the amps right away. That stuff was written on buses and whenever we had downtime. We did Jar of Flies to see how it was to record with [bassist] Mike Inez. We just went into the studio with no songs written, to check out the chem

@@rnrtruestories like these to. There are so many stories in songs as there are in RnR. Is great to know whats behind the lyrics. And I use to relate songs with my own expirience, transforming into something subjetive, so i am problably the worst listener for this kind of stories, but I like to hear and knowing (even though I continue to making that songs mine..🤣)

My Mom died in 1994 at age 52, kidney cancer. I was 18 years old. I'd never met my Dad and heard he'd died a few years prior. Jar of Flies and the lyrics and music of AIC, along with Layne and Jerry's beautiful harmonies possibly saved my life. I was mildly suicidal, severely depressed, and had undiagnosed/untreated ADHD with no treatment or management of my depression and anxiety. I've always wished I could tell Layne and Jerry thank you. I could feel that they knew what deep pain felt like by listening to their music. They were still going and it made me feel like I could as well, I felt less alone, less hopeless. ❤😢

I was at that show too. All my buddies were super into Alice since my best friend's band opened for them at St. Andrews. After the show Layne and Mike went to my buddy's house with way more people that could fit in that place. Soon after my buddy's band moved to Seattle, Mark Naficy, Alice's road and sound manager, was their manager. My buddy was there a few months then came back home. We formed a band and when Alice came in for that show, my buddy called our drummer and I to do some running for the band. They put us on the list. As I said, I wasn't very into Alice before the show, but that all changed during and after that show. I was a HUGE fan after that show! Nutshell was SO incredible at that show. When I listen to the studio version it actually is like being at that show again. The band went on to do one of if not their best performance that night. After Sean Kinney came out to chat with us. My buddy said he would have brought us backstage, but he said that Layne was OD'ing. That was an incredible night. If you haven't seen it yet, that show is on RUclips!

If you listen to Dirt there is a real contrast between the lyrics written by Jerry as opposed to Layne. Layne has already basically signed off then, by the time of Jar of Flies it was a statement of the obvious. Layne's lyrics on Dirt make it clear that he is completely nihilistic, does not care about anything other than getting wasted and is willing to accept what comes with that.or even welcomes it.

I was Lucky to see AIC 2 times before Layne Stayley took his life and when i picked up Dirt and Jar Of Flies i was just blown away i had already experienced the band thanks to MTV with Man In The Box and i was hooked and i sent a black and white picture of the band to their label and all the sudden i got a call from AIC shortly after Jar Of Flies coming out and they wished me a Happy Birthday and sent me my pic back autographed along with a window cling of Jar Of Flies also signed by everybody and to talk to Layne he was very soft and sounded very depressed and im not gonna lie i miss him everyday and Nutshell and Over Now are my favorite 2 songs from AIC and i love the hauntingly beautiful guitar work from Jerry Cantrell especially with Nutshell at 3:28 til the end and i lost my dad 2 yrs ago and he surpised me when he started playing AIC's Nutshell and never realized a 73 yr old man loved AIC and now everytime i hear Nutshell it brings me to tears for Layne, Mike and my dad. RIP Layne we will see you down the road my brother and youve been gone now 22 yrs 😢

I’m 36 years old and Alice In Chains has been my favorite band since I was in the first grade when my cousin brought over Facelift and they’ve been my favorite band ever since. Then when Dirt came out that became my favorite album of all time still to this day. Nutshell is a song that helped me through my struggles with depression and addiction. Just like all AIC songs when you hear it, it makes you feel something. To me it’s probably one of the greatest songs of all time because it lets people know what it’s like to live with these problems.

Yeah Jar of Flies was such a great EP.. We knew they could do the slower stuff and do it well, but Flies was a whole different thing. It was kinda risky too. I knew them as a metal band and grabbed Facelift when I was 11. Bands considered "metal" always had at least a few slower and even acoustic songs in their arsenal, but they weren't writing an entire album s worth of them. I know they're always referred to as grunge now but that wasn't really a thing when they put out Facelift.
I have to give the edge to Rotten Apple over Nutshell, but that's like having a favorite Ferrari, they're all great. Talk about haunting. My God nobody does haunting like Staley era Alice.

Jar of Flies is just a timeless masterpiece. Best songs both emotionally and musically, lyrically, everything. Rotten Apple feels so intimately post-apocalyptic but in a country way. Nutshell is perfect. Stay Away, Whales & Wasps, and the rest is just good. I remember the first time I saw the video of Stay Away and didnt know anything about the band I said myself: wow this kind of riff is just the best to represent the soft outcast lifestyle.

I worked the graveyard shift downtown Seattle when all these bands were breaking out. The Off ramp was across the street by I-5 and the RKCNDY was right on Denny and Stewart street. It was so loud when I couldn’t make it to a show you could still hear them most of the time. What memories, as time went by big names rolled through and we’d climb the service ladders to the roof of the shop to see if we could catch a glimpse of the acts leaving. Snoop and Dre were at the Rock Kandy by the mid 90’s and when everyone was leaving shootings started, there we were all scurrying around on the roof trying to find cover. Lol seems like two lifetimes ago now
