I recommend the story of the Polish band Kat. It is a legend that inspired all Polish groups (including Behemoth or Vader). Because it is now hated by fans, journalists, musicians and other people in the music industry. Why? Well, it's a trip down the rabbit hole...

Aren’t the majority of musical acts in the pop/ rock era, at least many of the more popular artist, groomed, their image created, and their image marketed by labels and producers? The story of Andrew wk isn’t so unusual in and of itself, it’s just how extreme, how conspiratorial it became. Honestly, how much of Taylor swift or Beyoncé is real and how much of it is image and persona?
Good point
It’s a good question
All of mainstream pop artists are industry plants, specifically after the 2000s. They all got massive teams of songwriters, producers, marketing teams, distribution, PR teams etc etc etc. The only person that SEEMS to be genuine at the mainstream level... would be Billy Ellish. Since it was just her and her brother writing and recording music in their bedroom. But even then... that's just a claim. The music industry is known for lying about these details in order give their artists more credibility and seem more relatable to the public

The fact that he got Donald Tardy from Obituary to play drums for him should be a major goal. Appeared out of nowhere and instantly got continuous rotation play across music channels with an expensive high production video despite very mediocre at best music. Definitely plausible.
I mean, that's how many popular acts happen. They go from obscurity to popularity with one big hit.
@@quebon2yes no one is disputing that a lot of acts are manufactured, that’s the whole point in the video. Well there is something awkwardly hilarious about coming out a month after 9/11 with a song screaming ““IT’S TIME TO PARTY AND WE PARTY HARD!!!” 😂 I can see why they were a bit timid of the release time
Did you really just call Limp Bizkit a "serious and angsty" act? 🤣😂😂😂
If you think about it, they really are more angsty than a grounded teenager on a Saturday and almost as serious. Whenever I hear any Limp Bizkit on the radio or whatever, the song "I Fell Asleep on My Arm" comes to mind.
They are all packaged creations. All of them.
He used it as an example. And he said "serious OR angsty". Limp Bizkit is definitely angsty.
He meant to say a "seriously nasty brat".
I actually think that they are very very serious and very very angsty. And that is precisely what makes them so hilariously awful in my opinion.
It’s that seriousness that, much like Billy Corgan, is what makes them so ridiculous. Hearing one of those guys talk about the technical details behind the engineering done to make their records, or talk about what a song means or something along those lines in a serious manner is hilarity defined.
What’s even funnier is when a member gets behind a social cause:
“You know we were talking about the ability the GOP has to convince people to vote against their own interests using their biases to create utter fear in them and that inspired Fred to write the chorus to ‘Turn It Up, Bitch’. You know the situation is quite serious” or “you know, ‘Nookie’ was a tough one because we were struggling. Wes’ daughter had been in an awful car accident and was in the hospital fighting for her life” (playing in the background: “come on, yeah! You can take that cookie and shove it up your…”)
See, irony can be funny and not just contrary.
Not sure I believe he hit himself in the face with a cinder block to get the bloody nose, as his face doesn't look destroyed or bruised whatsoever in that photo :/
Yeah that definitely seems like a story he made up to give his persona even more heft.
Nah I think he really did hit himself with a cinder block… but it was just a light tap & the block had wet red paint dripping off of it
You don't have to hit your nose very hard at all to get a nosebleed.

AWK puts on an incredible show. People crowdsurf up to the stage and then stay up there dancing. Security just held the PA up as kids sat on his shoulders while he sang and played a keyboard.
No one gets played at hockey and baseball games as much as this guy.
People like Coldplay and voted for the Na zis
I don't know about him being a "plant" seeing how he plays every instrument on his albums himself but I did see his old grind/hardcore band Kathode in Detroit sometime around 1997(ish) and he played drums and did vocals. He still does tours and I seen him play at this tiny Anarchist bookshop - thing in Lansing around 2007-8 and it was just him and his keyboards.
Talent on loan
I would say you saw Kathode maybe more like 1995-6 (at the Trumbull?). I played guitar in Kathode in their last couple months of existence. We would rehearse in a roach-infested flat of a house on Calumet Street. Sweaty, loud and intensely inspiring. He was really a ball of excitable energy then. I recorded their last 7" with them (Kathode/Voidd split on MCR Company) at The Tempermill in Summer 1996 and AWK split for NYC shortly after.

I'm 44 and have seen a lot of concerts in my time. Andrew WK in 2003 was one of the most positive vibe shows I've ever seen, it was amazing. I met him about a decade later too and he's a rad guy.
I can't believe this guy has conspiracy theories about him that didn't involve *Pizzagate*
I never heard of any of this stuff before.
I just know that when I first started hearing Andrew w.k. music it sounded like it was written in the early eighties but produced in the 2000s.
The thing is that the stories behind the guy and the conspiracy theories spun around him are more interesting than the actual music. He's a sort-of Jobriath, the story of someone whose career never took off. It could have worked, though. Had he appeared on the scene between 1999 and 2000 (in the context of nu-metal and whatever else was around at the time) he would have been on MTV all the time with a string of inescapable hits, but by 2002 he already was out of step with current trends (not just because 9/11 happened), so the buzz that the magazines were trying to write into reality never quite translated into the real world, as into the charts. At least, that's how I remember it. Never heard the songs on the radio, and barely caught the music videos on the channels.
I worked at Best Buy when that came out, my job was to put out the cds. I will never forgive WK for making me put those stickers over all his albums.

I was so annoyed with the reviews I read of Andrew W.K. Alot of disingenuous critics kissing his butt claiming that he had all the best of 80's metal except he could actually *harmonize.*
WHAT?! That analysis was absurd! The critic clearly didn't have anything to say, but was supposed to give a positive review, and so they made something up randomly.

Agreed. Complete label invention.
He appeared out of nowhere, which is the dead giveaway. Never heard of him, then he was everywhere.
Even if that's the case he was able to make a career out of it. I saw him in 2017 and he released another album since then
This person was so hyped you couldn't avoid him in any media, talk t.v., movie soundtracks, ect, for years. He had been out for 4 or 5 years when I finally sat down and listened to what the music really was, and it was like if Nickelodeon invented Ministry. They were pushing a no cursing,no drug/drinking, version of that guitar driven industrial sound that was popular at raves in the U.K. with bands like Agent orange and Lords of Acid. It didn't work and Andrew was just another failed experiment to cash in on underground sounds with followings like punk and metal.
Like Nickelodeon invented Ministry, haha that's great
"Like if Nikelodeon invented Ministry" is quite possibly the single best description of AWK I've ever heard in my life hahahaha

I love Andrew WK and I don’t for a minute thinks he’s a plant, I believe he’s just a genuine dude. I was going through some hard times around the time You’re Not Alone and the songs on that album helped me push through that darkness and if I ever get to meet him I’m gonna thank him for his music!
Yes
Sometime around 2005, my old roommate talked to him at a show and at some point gave Andrew his address. Awhile later, Andrew sent a letter to my roommate. The letter started out with something like "I thought it was about time that I wrote you.." then the rest was an encouragement to my friend to keep going with his music pursuits and not to give up on his dreams. I'm not sure about all the other stuff, but he seemed sincere.
I don't know much about him beyond his first couple of songs in the early 2000's that were absolute bangers... he comes across energetic, dirty, and upbeat and heavy yet still poppy at the sametime
