I literally have just realized that the mono-eye of the original design is supposed to look like racer goggles. Like a ski-mask or diving mask or something. Like, sporty.
Not really, it’s pedantic. It ruins memories of childhood, then. I went to the circus last year, it was one of the best things I ever saw. I found out later the animals had shock Collars that made them dance. Memory ruined. Not a hard concept to grasp.

As a vfx artist (who may have even been involved to a very minor degree in 1 or 2 of the properties mentioned throughout the video - NOT Sonic though, fortunately), I just want to stress something to hopefully help clarify the matter: - The three vfx companies mentioned in the video (& others) may be involved in, among other tasks, the creation & integration of Sonic into the film, but be aware that such companies are hired by the film studios & therefore answer to their demands. Granted, their work usually requires doing look development & designs to guide the work, but above all their clients are the ones who steered & approved the creative directions. So while it's easy to blame a company as an entity, take in mind that the artists, supervisors & producers need to adhere to someone else's creative vision, and now may have to work overtime because of someone else's decision. On top of that many artists share the same love for all those intellectual properties (I dare say more so than any other film department), and may equally share the pain of doing their job, creating this...
We all gotta remember that these are Top Down operations. A small group of people makes decisions for hundreds and thousands of others. Sometimes those commands are interpreted, but we've seen that these companies will force the proper result from their employees and ignore protests. So you are very right, we need to direct our anger at the ones responsible, not the people forced or coerced to do their bidding. They can't exactly say no. This isn't a fairytale, where the hero gets to drop his job and life to save the world. We gotta take it easy on them and remember they're on our team. The Peoples' team. And we support each other against tyranny.
@@TheCrimsonCat89 Granted, the art directors may have played their part, but then again someone higher up chose to go with that specific direction, or just didn't care & picked the worst... I will argue at best it is difficult to pin the horrible decisions on a single person from the go, and more often it isn't a black or white issue. It does appear however that no-one higher up in the chain had any interest or respect for the source material / IP, or thought they would know better because they have the money to prove it. Same reasons why CG ends up erasing practical effects instead of complimenting it, f.ex. The Thing 2011 (we do rather prefer to work with them) or rewriting endings because they may not seem marketable enough (I am Legend). => For those who are curious, there is a nice article on Cracked about designing movie monsters (mainly on ADI / Alec Gillis & Tom Woodruff Jr) that includes some classic tales about studio heads/producers making bad decisions, to the point of redesigning whole creatures based on a simple comment from a producer's 14-year-old son...
I think the Tim Miller quote says it all-it’s what he wanted. Mr Deadpool thought that suddenly slinking away from the source material like a beaten dog would be a good idea. Deadpool probably would have been as bad if it wasn’t for Ryan Reynolds insisting on staying true to the source material.
I don’t know why people are freaking out over this. That is what the citizens of Hollywood look like on a regular basis when their hologram projectors malfunction.
They could have literally pulled a Roger Rabbit and done... okay, even considering the jackass plot, with an Actual Cartoon Sonic running around the real world. Edit: Beaten to it.
As a fan of Roger Rabbit this would have been perfectly fine. I know Sonic as a cartoonish character, not a real creature with hair, organs, human teeth, and the insatiable need to collect your's while you sleep.
The Last Samurai isn't whitewashing. It's an adaptation of a novel titled Shogun, which in itself is a "non-fiction" dramatization of actual historical events surrounding William Adams (yes, the main character from Nioh, which Jim played), a British sailor whose ship landed in Japan back in the late 1500's/early 1600's. He became fairly involved in Japanese political affairs and was actually made a samurai, the first "Western Samurai." He actually lived out the rest of his life in Japan and is buried there.
Who Frames Roger Rabbit? nailed cartoon characters interacting with the real world in 1988. Hollywood: nah. Let’s model a cartoonish 90s character off Ted, who was literally supposed to be a teddy bear.
What's interesting is the tweaks they DO make...are pretty interesting. Especially with Mysterio, as they give him an armor look, make the fishbowl have some VFX in it...but they KEEP TO THE CORE DESIGN PRINCIPLES. Sonic, they didn't take care to go "Okay, what is the MOST IMPORTANT PARTS of SOnic?" Eyes. Kicks. Gloves. Proportions. Get those right, and you're solid. Then throw in "Hair, and Color Balance"... ...They got EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE KEY VISUAL ELEMENTS WRONG.
Well, at least he's blue ... they got the color right. More than can be said for Suicide Squad Harley Quinn. She wears black and red ... she ALWAYS wears black and red. You can put her in any kind of clothing and it'll always look like Harley Quinn as long as it's black and red. SHE WEARS BLACK AND RED XO

I'd say that the case with those adaptations that differed from the source material was that they added their own unique spin to it. The Mask wasn't as brutal and morbid as the original but it had then new talented actor Jim Carrey, groundbreaking effects and was written quite well. It took risks and it paid off. The Shining was made by a visionary director known for being obsessive about even the tiniest details. It's the "make it safe" or "just throw some shit together" attitude that makes those adaptations bad, not the artistic liberties per se.
@@bismuthcrystal9658 Not to mention the creepy giant smile he's been putting on put on John Riccitiello since the escapist days. Plus uncensored images of Bobby Kotick. There's a lot of disturbing content on this show.
Worth noting, Jim cosplayed an S&M Sonic, and it still wasn't as horrifying as the actual Sonic from the trailer. It takes real talent to make something look that bad.
I kind of think the idea going into it is: "So, we've already got the Sonic fans. They're a definite. We don't need to work to make a thing they'll like because they'll come anyway. Now, let's try to appeal to THE MAINSTREAM." And THE MAINSTREAM doesn't come 'cause it looks like a dorky stupid Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the fans don't come (especially not the four times each they otherwise would) because they can't see anything Sonic the Hedgehog about it. Grubby bum Eggman is his original, canon name. They changed it in the western releases for some odd reason and by Sonic Adventure, they comprised and made both Eggman and Robotnik canon, with the latter being his actual name (first name Ivo) and the former a nickname that Sonic called him but he took to heart and threw back in his face. (Eggman starred using his nickname before the events of Sonic 1 going by the original script; the Sonic Adventure 1 English dub lines about him using Robotnik more were to illustrate the change) The Mario equivalent would be Princess Peach originally being called Toadstool overseas.
@@grubbybum3614 I prefer to use both honestly. Maybe it's just because of how he's been called in the West, but I prefer Robotnik for the classic design (pre-Adventure 1) and Eggman for the more modern design (Adventure 1 and onwards).

He would work great for the original Sonic *Cartoon* because DiC kinda did the _same_ thing as Hollywood, but because it was a cartoon it actually worked. Cartoon Robotnik is very much like The Grinch....incidentally another role he's already done. A second cartoon was done by Archie comics and basically served as the "redesign." Both of them worked _because_ they were cartoons though, thank gawd CG cartoons (Like Reboot) wouldn't be a thing for another 10 years or else the first one may have received the same fate. As a vfx artist (who may have even been involved to a very minor degree in 1 or 2 of the properties mentioned throughout the video - NOT Sonic though, fortunately), I just want to stress something to hopefully help clarify the matter:
- The three vfx companies mentioned in the video (& others) may be involved in, among other tasks, the creation & integration of Sonic into the film, but be aware that such companies are hired by the film studios & therefore answer to their demands.
The art directors failed to capture Sonic's look.
*”We’ve finally given Sonic something to hang his rings from.”* If this isn’t Jim’s best line ever, it’s *hands down* in the top 5. Omfg 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Felis Impurrator I absolutely love movies that mashup live action and 2D animation, I’d love to see a new take on this concept
Incorporating traditional 2D cel animation into live action scenes would have been much too expensive for this cynical cash grab.
Detective Pikachu pulled off the Roger Rabbit-alike with aplomb
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a fucking gem that I will love for the rest of my life. "Realism" for it's own sake is stupid.

He was a one hit wonder anyway.
Wait, I, they didn't base the design based on ted, they based it on fuckin Coolio!
You must have arachnophobia then.
Even more than Nick Nolte’s notorious mug shot?
The Last Samurai isn't whitewashing. It's an adaptation of a novel titled Shogun, which in itself is a "non-fiction" dramatization of actual historical events surrounding William Adams (yes, the main character from Nioh, which Jim played), a British sailor whose ship landed in Japan back in the late 1500's/early 1600's. He became fairly involved in Japanese political affairs and was actually made a samurai, the first "Western Samurai." He actually lived out the rest of his life in Japan and is buried there.
Starwind87 maybe he confused the movie with 47 Ronin. A la Antman thinking Looper was Die Hard. The covers of the films look remarkably similar.
Sonic, they didn't take care to go "Okay, what is the MOST IMPORTANT PARTS of SOnic?"
Eyes. Kicks.
Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog, and to me it seems like they took the "anthropomorphic" aspect and blew it out of proportions. MASSIVELY out of PROPORTION!
Yeah mysterio is still mysterio just adapted to live action and with a bit more detail that you lack in comic format
The vfx artist don't have any control over the design. Please don't blame them.
I hope the redesign is worse than the original.
Given that they have six months to re-design the model and do years of work re-integrating it into the movie, there's no way it won't look like shit.

We can't knock it out of the park like Detective Pikachu that's just how it is sometimes and if we are going to make conspiracy to discredit their actions to do right which we barely see from independent creators as is we are making those actions less worthwhile and won't matter. I just hope for a first-time director he truly is able to get everyone to do by the date without crunching everyone into oblivion.

I hate the chumps who say "egg man".. wtf is that shit? They'd better call him Robotnik in the film.
(Eggman starred using his nickname before the events of Sonic 1 going by the original script; the Sonic Adventure 1 English dub lines about him using Robotnik more were to illustrate the change)

But at least it would wind up being bad in a more Sonic-like way.
And jim carrey running around kicking his own ass
@@PsychadelicoDuck
See that would require trying, you know putting in some effort.
Hollywood likes to be as lazy as possible. And at the same time not follow any of the games or story elements from the games. They're not even consistent with their laziness.
@@PsychadelicoDuck I'm surprised they didn't go with that angle.
Jim looks like Sonic if he were a character in Manhunt.
Giant Squidy
Oh yeah, manhunt. That was a thing.
I would play that.

Shocked Detective Pikachu face.
Shocked Sonic face you mean?
thelaughingrouge Realistic Pokémon: Oh, that’s adorable.
Sonic Movie people: Hey, we can do that too!
Me: Forget saying kill it with fire, I’m going down there and setting fire to everything involved myself!
The point on Hollywood and intellectual property is SPOT ON!
I wonder if they were intentually trying to retell a crappier version of sonic x or were they simply following the old trends for aliens stuck on earth movies? Like ET and Transformers.
Why do we even need humans?
Why CG?
Just make a goddamn animated film. He's a cartoon character, just.. do that. That Sonic Mania launch trailer? That. Just.. do that but add a basic story in his magical fuzzy animal land against bad Mr. Eggman.
You don't need to have Jim Carrey acting out holographic interfaces, a generic american everyman, he doesn't need to be an alien or shoved in a duffel bag. Just have Sonic doing an adventure in sonic-land.
This. I couldn't agree more.
7.5/10
The "Triple AAA" is not spoken in snooty tone
"we've finally given Sonic something to hang his rings from" ABSOLUTE. BEST.
It's shockingly ironic that Tim Miller was responsible for directing the most accurate version of Deadpool in film, then tries to justify this version?!
I miss fuckonami, Ubisoft etc rants at the end of the vids

@@SrMissileMonkey Get them to mess up? Wait for them to think the coast is clear and everyone has forgotten about their BS. They will sidle right to that envelope and start pushing it again.
Jim seems to have moved to the bigger picture of "what's wrong with the market that allows these shitheads to act this way" rather than continue addressing the symptoms instead of the disease.
TomaHawk PWPT I don’t think they’ve stopped but instead Jim is taking a more targeted approach
Connor Boyle I don’t disagree...but I miss these satire pieces that drew me to the channel in the first place. It was part of the niche in the market that I couldn’t find elsewhere on RUclips

Well, clearly they forgot to ask me.

In all seriousness, I don't blame him for hitching his wagon to this project. Dudes' only worth about a 100k, and that's probably mostly tied up in royalties. I know dudes who work at Walmart who have more hard assets than that.
Damn, this rap beef between Jim and Coolio is really heating up. I wonder when one of them is going to drop a diss track?
I wish this had been called "Jim Sterlings very Sonic Spectacular"
Wasn't Tom Cruise's character in the Last Samurai based on a real guy though? Only difference was, he was actually French instead of American (but they made him American to give him that extra guilt about the natives, mirroring what he's doing to the Japanese).
Bacxaber Yes, wasn’t whitewashing there (American-washing, maybe)
I absolutely KNOW you had that Sonic the Gimp mask already, Jim, and that you were secretly happy you can use it in a video to write it off your taxes as a business expense.
It's a regular Sonic hat - Great Eastern's, I think - on-top of an ordinary gimp-mask.
The Sonic Hat - www.amazon.com/GE-Animation-GE-2380-Sonic-Hedgehog/dp/B003R1HS0Y
Not looking for the gimp-mask, though.
Please stop call him Sonic, it´s clearly Stefan der Igeljunge (Steven the Hedgehog boy)
Let me guess, Joel?
Uncanny The Man-hog.
Sonic The HairHog
I go for LAnic the Horgeheg.
I thought it was Sanic the Topiarypig
Jim please wear that to the opening night! A video of that would be gold!
"Jim Carrey making me cringe so hard I want to eat me own teeth!"
XD! I lost it when I heard that line.
It's like he dusted off his roles as Ace Ventura or the Mask, added smug, and just went with that. I haven't played enough Sonic games to know what Dr. Robotnik's character is like other than he seems like a Dr. Wily knock off. Whatever the case, this just comes off as Jim Carrey preferring to not act outside of a mold rather than pay any kind of attention to source material and adjust accordingly. If any Sonic fan would like to chime in here, I would be interested to know their take on how faithfully Dr. Robotnik is portrayed and whether canned Jim Carrey actually fits in this role.
Maybe this will be fresh to the people not familiar with his older stuff, but I can't help roll my eyes and think to myself, "oh, it's the patented Jim Carrey schtick again."
Actual Robotnik actually outclasses Dr Wily by several magnitudes, though. The Man not only built his own Super Star Destroyer (Egg Carrier), but his own damn Death Star(Egg) too! Except with giant Mecha instead of TIE fighters

vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/evil/images/c/cd/The_Egg_Carrier.jpg
(Actually come to think of it, the Death Egg is stronger than the Death Star because it has _two_ superlasers, and no outer weak points. The core is also a giant robot itself, which is finally fought in Sonic Forces, so it's not just a simple matter of running in and blowing it up)
image.jeuxvideo.com/medias-lg/151119/1511186714-5825-capture-d-ecran.jpg
While his general designs are Wily-esque especially his personal vehicles (down to even having a face and similar spiky arms), when he gets mad and gets _serious_ he can really drop the hammer hard! Regular Robotnik is closer to Zero's nemesis, Dr Weil in terms of threat level sprites-inc.co.uk/files/Zero/Zero4/Cutscene/ragnarok.gif
So Jim Carrey is *A* Robotnik (the cartoon/spinoff one, Sega actually liked the mangled version enough to make him an alternate universe counterpart for titles like Spinball and Mean Bean Machine, which tells you *how* bad Hollywood Sonic must be if Sega didn't roll with it) than *THE* Robotnik
(It's makes sense his scale is so much larger though, as Sonic would rip through Wily's stages in about 15 seconds)
@@Poglavnit_Pferdefuhrer I appreciate your thoughtful and in depth response to this two month old post of mine.
It seems again adapting cartoon characters to the big screen faces the challenge of overcoming the uncanny valley. So Jim Carrey probably would have been better suited in a voice role for Dr. Robotnik? I think that makes more sense.
Sonic Man from Sonic 06 would be a better protagonist for this movie.
That would make Elise's relationship even creepier.
@@snakeboy2017 Now imagine Sonic 06, but with this movie's models.

Amish Paradise would a better song choice.
I would have gone with "Eat it" myself. But i enjoy scaring people, so what do i know.
Not going lie, I thought it was Amish paradise when I first saw the trailer. Simply because my head could not compute that gangster paradise would in a Sonic movie.
12:11 anyone notice that Cyclops's neck is like, oozing out of the top of his suit?
You are totally right, it looks weird as hell xD
Honestly Sonic is just a big meme at this point. Kind of like Shrek.
This would probably have worked better. Making it fully animated and not taking itself so seriously with jokes included for children and adults.
NEXUS Hell, HD Sonic is already Pixar-esque. There is zero excuse to even attempt live action.
Blame Chris Chan
There is still hope that the redesign is worse!

It's because Chris-chan did his own version called Trollster's Paradise, Jim. Get with the times. This is the dimensional merge we've been warned about.
