That's my personal biggest gripe with Supernatural. I hated how Gabriel died the last time, when Crowley died the scene didn't fully hit me until I was halfway through the next season and I realized he probably wouldn't come back, and Dean's final death made me mad because I didn't think they'd actually kill him off, even with it being the finale

@@janellehuneke8049 I remember watching an episode after Crowley's death in which Rowena's trying to bring her son back, and Sam and Dean are like, "You can't bring him back. You have to move on. When almost every single season, Sam and Dean bring each other back from the dead.
I was also really irritated when Gabriel died again. I really like him, and they brought him back for maybe 3 or 5 episodes and then killed him again. It feels pointless, and only for shock value, when they kill people off so much. With all of Cas' glorious deaths, they'd try to kill him off time and time again and every time, they'd play it like it's so tragic. then he comes back a few episodes later and then immediately leaves the bunker for multiple episodes because they apparently can't just have Cas there, and just hanging around for once.
The end of the show just feels so hollow because once again, nobody around them matters. They end the show with just the two of them. All of their friends are dead. And then Dean's death was kinda dumb as well.

Reedeming lucifer (in my opinion) is a bad idea, whether you believe in its existence or not, lucifer is the original bad guy. He is evil, period. People trying to justify his actions is just, well, its deflating. Anyways, Mark Pellegrino killed it. He is the original Homelander, before Eric Kripke decided to direct the boys.

I don't like how the show killed Dean. Dean always said he'd die on a hunt and overall it just felt kinda depressing that he believed it. He had a normal life when Sam was gone, I wish the show proved Dean wrong. This is like a suicide victim saying no one would care then that exact thing happening, no one wants that to be the case. Sam and Dean deserved a happy ending. You can argue what we got was a happy ending but was it? They fought for Earth, not heaven.
I think how I'm writing is a bit weird but I just dislike how dean dies in the end.

I think Jensen didn't even like how they handled Dean's death, but it's over and done with. Made me cry like a baby even if it wasn't the best ending. I'm on a 1-5 season rewatch, and I think they went full-circle on the fact that Dean said he would hunt until the day he died, plus he was always kind of suicidal, especially after Season 2. They both deserved happy endings, but the showrunners weren't going to do that because a certain audience (Destiel shippers) wouldn't be pleased had Dean married a woman and had a family of his own like Sam did. That's why I think they did it the way they did.
Edit: And this isn't to drag Destiel shippers, but there's no denying that there would be anger. I feel like a lot of the ending had to do with C*vid and rushing an ending (like wtf was that low-budget wig on Sam??) and also the two sides of the fandom.

Yeah my read on Chuck retrospectively in season 11 is that he had no remorse for locking Amara away. He plays drama queen having Metatron take down his biography. Which you could see as "I want to leave something behind now that my time is up" but.. If everything dies with him then... it seems more like a vanity project. You'd also think he'd have stepped in when the mark re-entered the global knowledge, but only shows up after it's gone. It's almost like the situation was set up specifically to manipulate Amara. As if all the events of 11 are the "gaslight my sister into apologizing to me for what I did to her" master plan. Right up to the random person who meets Amara in the garden.

I know both Jensen, Jared, and the fans wanted to keep the series going, but I feel the writers, show runner, and Studio wanted to end it. There have been other examples of angels returning to prior human vessels that were still around, but I understand the argument that they were normal angels and not archangels. The season 15 episode "Atomic Monsters" defines the purpose of the season as a whole, particularly the exchange between Chuck and Becky. Chuck for all intents and purposes serves the metaphorical role of the writers, directors, creator and just general individuals with power over the scripts, the story. Becky stands in for the fans, sometimes chaotic (as seen in the past) but ultimately well intendtioned and in love with these characters and this universe. Chuck wants to end things in poetic tragedy while Becky wants the boys to finally find happiness after all their struggles. And Becky, being a fan, critiques his direction for the story. Chuck, the creative team, becomes frustrated with said critique and ultimately exerts his power over said story despite Becky's pleas.
The entire season is a meta commentary on the creative process, Chuck - ie the writers - is unhinged. And therefore any seeming cohesion issues can be attributed to it. He can do whatever he wants. Is it lazy writing? Maybe. But its pre-established. And personally, focusing an entire episode on how frustrated Chuck is is the near perfect way of doing so. It's his domain, he is exerting his power over it, sense be damned. And the entire season is the Winchesters battle with breaking free of him - breaking free of the constant struggle the writers have put them through. It's the characters just trying to find their own agency outside of writers, outside of fans, outside of critics. And it's a beautiful concept.
Supernatural has always been at its best when being meta and so making its final season one big allegory that isn't shy about being one is... brilliant I think. I don't have issue with Chuck's heel turn, especially with how fascinated he seemed with being the man behind the curtain watching and manipulating the narrative in the final scenes of "Swan Song' and "Fan Fiction." It also better explains how he was able to foretell what would happen while pretending to be a profit, because he is literally the one controlling the story, something season 11 does not address at all. I think it fits fairly well as a plot twist in retrospect.
As you can probably tell by this point, I love season 15. As a once aspiring writer, who has partaken in studying the craft as well as being a part of discussion groups pertaining to it, it lands fairly well. It isn't perfect, nothing is. There are moments that feel out of place even with knowing about Chuck being pure chaos, creative decisions being suspect at best in our modern culture, there are moments that feel too fan-service centered and poorly weaved (although I agree, the fan service isn't overbearing even if there are moments that could have used it), and from the final half of episode 19 all the way through the finale I believe they fumbled incredibly as so many fans do. But overall I feel it's a success, and, dare I say I find it better then season 5 as a send off. It's one of my favorites.
Edit: This video shockingly summed up almost all of my praises/criticisms of season 15 and the series finale in-particular extremely well. Just wanted to give her a shoutout for an excellent deconstruction. ruclips.net/video/rHEitiHTBeQ/видео.html

Contemplating my overall thoughts of Supernatural and it just baffles me how big it got, and still is. I mean Season 1 was your ordinary WB teen drama not unlike Dawson’s Creek or 90210, just with an added flavor of ghost hunting. And those shows were influential in their own right but their cultural significance mostly stayed confined to the early 2000s. Supernatural, however, has permanently cemented itself in the zeitgeist for perhaps the rest of the century. Supernatural is associated with almost everything now. Flannel shirts and trench coats are now cosplay; the ‘67 Chevy Impala, considered worthless scrap metal before is now a collectors item, lines of dialogue that are quoted the world over, “ Hey Assbut, Balls, Idgit, Hello Boys, So Get This, Jerk; Bitch,” the list goes on forever. Hell this is the second property to popularize the line, “I’m Batman!” All this from a CW show that was green lit in the aftermath of the character drama boom made possible by Lost’s popularity. There were highs and lows, and there were deep dark chasms that sucked out all joy in the world, but it, and Eric Kripke, left their impact on the world. And also Jared and Jensen. Most actors would kill for a career defining character, and i don’t think they’ll be walking away from Sam and Dean for, say the rest of their lives. Alright, out of thoughts. Everyone go on with your lives, nothing to see here!

The later seasons actually have better monster of the week episodes, which is why I think the last 3-5 seasons are better than the previous 5 seasons, not counting the original 5 seasons. I wouldn’t say they’re worse since they add alot of stuff I actually like, but they’re not better than the first 5 seasons either. Honestly, each season adds something to the lore I like, like Purgatory or the Darkness being a better person than God himself, but they’re not better than the first 5 seasons

I wanna add to the 'reapers getting possessed by demons' thing. It is important to note that the only time we see this done is with a Prince of Hell. We see the princes overpowering angels all the time. Like Dagon vs Castiel. So Azazel possessing Tessa wasn't totally as outrageous. Also Crowley went into Sam that one time when he was possessed by Gadreel.
Maybe I'm just covering for bad writing idk, but it makes sense to me.

I was recently in the hospital for like 2 weeks and rewatched almost the entire show while I was there. I started at 12-15 cuz I didn't know I was going to be in there as long as I was and those are the 1's I've rewatched the least some not at all. I was kinda surprised too how much I enjoyed them on a rewatch. On the original airing I feel like I didn't enjoy it as much but there's a lot of good episodes and arcs in there. I really love Jack, his character is very interesting to watch and I really felt for him. Watching him try to learn to control his powers that he doesn't understand with emotions that are confusing to him. Oh my heart. I also love what they did with Rowena. Her character development and arc was also really cool I felt like.

this is definitely the most frustrating era of the show for me. the writing in the final season is what ruins the show for me (and Supernatural itself is fantastic but the decisions the writers ended up making made no sense and it honestly really infuriates me to know that that was how they chose to honor the show during its final run). none of these final 4 seasons really feel like they do the show any justice… with how many times all of these episodes go from good to okay to bad in a matter of 2 or 3 episodes is just very messy. and Jack is a character that i absolutely adore but unfortunately he doesn’t save seasons 13-15… they tend to do so much yet so little at the same time…and despite Sam being my favorite character, Dean was such a lovable character and the writers did Jensen SO DIRTY by making him act totally out of character after season 12…imo the cast deserved better and so did the fans.

I think my biggest beef was how awful some elements of the finale seasons were after 11.
Like, I was so surprised the Apocalypse angels would put Adam in a room with Mary that they could easily escape, like, the ONLY room he could escape. It seemed like a trick, and it wasn't, and I was absolutely devasted that the villains would be that stupid.
Similarly, the show becomes all about the "dads" of the show raising their mini-god, while Chuck becomes a homicidal fanboy after a season where he was willing to "kill" himself or trap himself for eternity - its like, where's his love for creation he was weeping to Amara about? Lol.

This was really well done man. Congrats on finishing your series of reviews. I see now why you said we had very "different opinions" of these seasons. I can definitely see where you are coming from when it comes to unique and different ideas in these seasons. While I definitely feel they were alot better in concept than they were in execution, they tried ... they tried lol.
I'll honestly never forgive the Gabrielle retcon. Great points about the retcon's from Carver era. I honestly can't remember those seasons at all so I'm interested what I will find when I start reviewing those next. Gabrielle's retcon was just ... so pointless to me. Because in the end, it ended the exact same way. It also unintentionally damages one of the best moments (and there are tons of them) from Season 5.
At least we agree for the most part on S15. Unity was great, Despair was ... not so much to me. Either way, I really think this was a great video! Congrats again. I personally don’t hate Mary, she died for 33 years and came back to life to find everything she ever wanted gone to hell and never coming back, her husband’s dead, her kids were hunters and the normal life she wanted was gone, along with needing to adjust to a world that moved on without her and getting used to the modern era and all the new things that happened or were made since she died. Even her working for the BMoL isn’t that bad, since Sam was working with them too, so why are people blaming Mary and saying she’s a bad person if Sam’s doing the same thing, and he was the one tortured? Sam and Dean really needed to understand that Mary isn’t the perfect mom or person they thought she was, she’s human and makes mistakes, but they’ve made bigger, nearly world ending mistakes, and they get angry she’s working with the Brits? They’ve worked with demons and Lucifer himself, literally as recent as the previous season
Edit: I understand wanting more in season 15, but COVID happened and they couldn’t do their original ending, they wanted to bring everyone who died back to the Roadhouse in Heaven, but they couldn’t because of quarantine and just how hard it would have been with the restrictions of COVID, which is understandable

Seasons 1-5: Amazing TV, great seasonal storylines, some amazing episodes, stakes are real and believable
Seasons 6-10: Still very strong TV. Seasonal arcs/villains are still pretty strong, but the stakes don't feel quite as real, but still really enjoyable
Seasons 11-15: Very hit and miss with a few standout episodes, but Seasonal arcs are pretty weak, lousy send off for Crowley, stakes really don't feel real (I mean, seriously, the Boys vs. Actual God, or God's "sister" ?????). even then, we see in the apocalypse world, if sam and dean arent born the vessels become connected to another person from the special children arch. you can tell by AW michael being african american; the person who would have became lucifers vessel if dean didnt resurrect sam would have been jake, who was african amarican and was confirmed to have siblings.

We found out that he outlawed nephilim way back in Lilly Summer Has Some Regrets, which makes a ton of sense if you see it from the perspective that he knew all along that a nephilim would come along that would be more powerful than him and replace him. His lies about being a prophet of God and how he lied to them about how things could have ended in the episode where they rewrite the end story during season five.
