      Wow that's exactly how I got into the show. I saw one ep. The one with abe Lincoln and Paris Hilton. Thought this was pretty then fuckih binged it from the start and loved it. And it's not even close the first 5 seasons are the best bc it's basically one story. And com'on Lucifer was freakin amazing.

      @@BrettonFerguson I agree.
      The Host of Heaven made them super powerful and without Lucifer + Michael it becomes significantly reduced. Meanwhile it made them arrogant, shaky, and prone to leaving their chin wide open - see Zachariah's death. With power came hubris.
      Castiel gets resurrected as a Seraph after his death by Lucifer, which gives him sustainable power. Meanwhile though, the commentary on Castiel is that he wishes he was human. He appreciates life every chance he gets to have it, in the Lucifer Apocalypse timeline he becomes an orgy loving religious leader because he loves humanity THAT much.
      Meanwhile the world starts getting magical warding, monsters start becoming more powerful (Eve), and the world "adapts" to angelic abilities. Castiel becomes better at being human, and adopting the boys strategies, but he neglects his angelic brutish side - because he can comb an ENTIRE city looking for someone instantly, or he can open the yellow pages. Castiel can do a lot of things, but it's not as useful as having discretion. Angelic powers also have drawbacks - Castiel gets captured a few times, because he's off on his own and alone and he gets cornered by powerful creatures. Sticking your nose everywhere alone gets you wrecked, and at the same time the boys seem to have far more simple tools.
      Castiel stops disrespecting himself and starts using his head instead of his angelic power. We never know what limits Castiel either, but many abilities (like time travel) suck his angelic ability. This might not slow him in any way, but it does tire him - using angelic power doesn't make everyone's life easier all the time, because suddenly he's gotta go into a myopic view of people at an atomic level... divorcing him from the moments he's in. It's why he develops a drinking problem, requiring sleep, and starting to show more human traits - it isn't just weakness from his waning power, it's his want to shed his angelic power.
      Humility is Castiel's greatest strength and it's why Chuck *hates* Castiel more than any other angel. He thinks he's broken and it's true - Castiel is a terrible angel. They were made to follow and love chuck. Castiel does neither of those things well, Chuck must've made him while daydreaming of humans because Castiel makes a far, far better human.
      And this single-handedly lets him swathe his way through angels, vampires, leviathans, death and many others - because they are not expecting an angel who doesn't care about power. That submits to self-sacrifice and love on a deep spiritual level, so much that the universe can't handle it.
      Castiel doesn't get weaker, he gets stronger, until he's subverting death, the empty, and basically everything by just being "reasonable".
      Compare that to his other self, which gets trashed when the boys see him in any other universe. Just another hammer swinging at nails, the boys clobber him every time because he sticks his chin out.
      This plays out over and over. It's how Castiel beats almost every other angel hand to hand - because they rely on their power, not their humanity. Literally their own HANDS. Castiel's whole fighting style revolves around giving everyone a huge sense of ego by giving them absolutely every chance to back down. Then he becomes super resourceful and doesn't worry about not having a blade - this shocks every angel, who thinks he's just laying down. Demons get wrecked by this too.
      Why smite when you can just stab them and be done with it? Angels smite because it makes them feel powerful, Castiel kills clean because it's more decent to stab than to burn the eyes out of a host while clawing to get at the angel inside.
      It's funny because this is a major sticking point in the community because, deep down, people liked seeing him flash-fry people, but that's disturbing. Smiting was disturbing, it's introduced as a violent means and the first smite we see is an innocent psychic.
      ... Castiel's virtues prohibit him from being that brutish.
      I think the most glaring example of angelic weirdness is the Michael / Lucifer fight where Gabriel dies, but that can largely be attributed to the fact that they weren't fighting for the grand plan, they weren't trying to junk the earth. Admittedly that's kind of a bummer, but also a bit of character growth in the sense that they actually *care* enough *not* to destroy the earth, and considering Lucifer is obsessed with the Earth it makes sense. Even in the Michael Vs. Lucifer fight, Lucifer tries to talk down Michael which feels so ironic, except that Lucifer DOES love the earth. He hates humans. Destroying the earth is not his priority - and many times that's the same with many of the angels. They save the big moves for serious moments, unless Chuck commanded it.
      The show does have issues later on, but Castiel's power levels were consistent, his discretion just changed. He stopped slaving and started using his head, and his heart, and they were far more effective tools. So much so the boys often underestimate him, "I'll interrogate the cat" is played for laughs, but that cat WAS something they missed.
      ... and many times Dean slows Cas down, forcing him to sit in the impala with them instead of warping ahead, and that's specifically because Cas can walk himself right into holy oil, warding, or other problems going off alone just like any other hunter. Even Raphael was captured by Holy Oil early on, their hubris is THAT crazy strong. Gabriel too.
      He's not as strong as people think, you just need confidence and the right tactic, so Castiel stopped using his powers and started using that growing soul. He didn't even have one in the classic sense, save for a few brief moments of humanity - but he appreciated them for what they were worth, and canonically souls are FAR more powerful than angelic power.
      He just switched gears.

    Yep 100%. The first 5 seasons were BY FAR the best of the entire run. I feel like its the only group of seasons that actually led to a satisfying and enthralling end of season conclusion with each season building off of another with both lore and character development and it felt like there were actual stakes. My biggest complaint about the seasons after 5 is that the makers tried to make each season bigger than the last and that just made everything start to feel unearned and not really shocking. Also character development, there's only so much you can do with characters that you have known for 15 years at a certain point. Like Sam, after season 8 or so, the writers kind of throw him off to the wayside and doesn't end up doing much anymore. I know this sounds really negative, but I promise, Supernatural is still one of my favorite shows of all time! (Also sorry this is so long winded, great review!)

      Castiel's intro was the best moment in the show. Problem was, he was too interesting a character to have be in the background and to powerful for 99% of plots.
      They did try and explain how they nerfed him (and other angels) sometimes. But often just kinda forgot. But, in fairness, it's almost impossible to have a character that powerful be a regular in a series like this.

    • @draketheduelist

      I distinctly remember that! How there was this looming threat of something beyond anything the Winchesters had faced up to that point. How Dean came back from Hell inexplicably. How no one could even tell what was going on aside from it being really, REALLY big. How no amount of demon traps, snares, or charms from around the world could even slow down this paranormal juggernaut. Even Misha Collins _himself_ wasn't told what his character was supposed to be until the very last minute. You definitely get that this is the kind of entity that has good reason to tell people to "fear not".

    I have a personal connection to this situation: I am a screenwriter/storyboard artist and in 2010 I lived in LA. I sent SUPERNATURAL show-runner Eric Kripke a Dean&Sam storyboard sequence I wrote & rendered. Mr. Kripke called me and we talked for 3 hours. He loved my work (and offered me work on his next series that failed) but explained he was retiring after the 5th season. When I asked about his 5-year plan, he explained that the crew had become his friends over the 7 years it took to get the 5 seasons in the can. CW wanted a flagship show, so they made him and offer he couldn't refuse- EVERYONE made out like bandits, and all Kripke had to do was make sure the show didn't go off the rails. (It did- but it took a decade.) Understand that a Grip that made $60K/year (not much in LA) made $120K/year EXTRA in profit participation & residuals- that is how lucrative the deal was for everyone. Because Kripke did not want to leave them all unemployed, so they got rich when he was done with it, because they all took over and did a decent job as stewards.
    My point is also: if GAME OF THRONES show-runners, the idiots D&D had done the same thing, it would still be airing new episodes today, everyone would be unbelievably rich, and D&D would not be the laughingstock of Hollywood, and their STAR WARS trilogy of movies would have been made.

  • @natebush8217
    @natebush8217 Год назад +144

    Personally, the monster-of-the-week episodes were almost always my favorites; I love the tension of Sam and Dean doing research into the monster's potential identity as victims pile up around them, not always sure if it's gonna be a monster they fought before or an all new monster they need to do even more research on in order to beat it. I especially like when it turns out the monster is not actually evil and the brothers have to come to terms with the idea that "hunters vs. monsters" is not so black and white. While I do think the main stories are generally pretty solid, I was never as big of a fan of the celestial conflicts as I was of the MOTW scenarios as I much prefer the down-to-earth, nitty-gritty stuff that actually makes me believe that mear humans like Sam and Dean could actually win with the right amount of prep time and tenacity. When you add gods and angels to the mix, my suspension of disbelief begins to falter as it feels less likely the brothers could face off against such beings as well as the show's tv budget making such grandiose conflicts seem much less impressive than they could be (I mean, how many creatures take the form of humans as a means to save up on special effects, I ask you. Lol). These are nitpicks, of course, and the show almost always does a great job of keeping me hooked. 😆

      yes i agree, i have always found cryptics and stuff like that much more interesting to me than the celestial stuff. Go find some place else to have temper tantrums lol. maybe the celestial stuff just annoyed me because i am so used to this world around me where governments and countries bring normal people just trying to survive into their wars or the highest profits, so it just makes me feel weary about everything around me 🤷‍♀ i don't hate the angel stuff but most the time i am like jesus 💀can you leave these poor boys alone, they'd been through enough, dudes haha

    I've never thought about how much more sense it would have made for a resurrected John to be the vessel for Michael instead of Adam. That would have been amazing.

    • @insomnimac8368
      @insomnimac8368 4 месяца назад +3

      Wouldn't work.
      Like Bobby, and then Sam, John never would've yielded. Being consumed by a powerful monster is the antithesis of what John stood for, he resisted Yellow Eyes in life who arguably might've been more difficult. They likely thought of this, but Michael likely knew that current era John was far, far too bullheaded. Dean manages to contain Michael but admittedly isn't as good as Sam at kicking out angels. Sam can crush them under his boot, literally, but John and Sam are the most alike. John's specialty was putting holy water in pipes too, not only could John subvert Michael he'd make sure his body was fundamentally flawed.
      Adam was a perfect vessel not because he was strong, or capable, or smart - but because he had a pure love for his mother, which made him easy to quiet down. Angels can also erase memory, which is very useful for Adam since he's an innocent kid at 16.
      At 16 John's a raging would-be marine, you edit out John's memories he relies more on core memories of his difficult upbringing before he had structure. His urge to be a soldier is the strongest and that's the thought that gets Sam to beat out Lucifer. That's the toy soldier he sees right before he gets a grip on Lucifer - John is at that moment when he's young, so you can't edit John's memories because John's desire for a good life, respect, and order is so strong he goes to Vietnam.
      Adam had a good childhood, a good life, and good memories. It makes him docile and the angels feather this, they give him heaven they promise him his mom - and all they need to do is leave in his "death" at the hands of ghouls to keep him reminded of what's going to happen if he doesn't play ball.
      Adam is, by accounts, a dutiful son. It makes him the perfect vessel for Michael.
      It actually plays well into the commentary of the Arch Angels themselves too - Chuck assigned them the wrong humans.
      Dean would've responded more to Lucifer, the beer-drinking cheeseburger loving self-rightous brother is more akin to Lucifer.
      Michael, the son that praises order but has issues with being "too individual and controlling" is Michael.
      If you REALLY want to blow your hair back, the real secret kicker of Adam is that he IS a perfect vessel. He is, without a doubt, perfectly paired with his proper angel. But it's not Michael.
      It's *Gabriel*.
      Raphael has no human vessel because he would never want one, Raphael is in effect the most human of all the angels and the most flawed - but he takes whatever Vessel he wants. He also loses his first vessel to being turned into Salt, which presumably might've been his true vessel. But Gabriel and Adam are perfectly aligned, they've never met as far as we know and that's because Gabriel avoids him like the plague - no more wanting of "daddy's plan" Gabriel has been in hiding for so long he's likely not even aware Adam exists... because Gabriel isn't looking for a perfect vessel, he loves humanity at large.
      The golden children are a far cry from the fighting siblings who tango with their familial patriarch's. Gabriel is close to Michael likely much in the way that Gabriel is close to everyone.
      The angels never put this together, Chuck never realized it, and the boys didn't dare even *think* about it. Michael and Sam might've found common ground in order, same as Lucifer and Dean in chaos.
      John is far too human, he's more like Bobby, I doubt even Chuck could wrangle John as a vessel without stripping most of his memories and subplanting them. Yellow Eyes was likely more difficult to resist than an average angel, as Crowley proves that he could easily coach Sam into resisting angelic possession. Angels are bound by "no" while demons seem far better at subverting people. Lucifer being the king of both makes him the hardest, but Sam found the way. John had experiences with Yellow Eyes, so he's had practice - he needed an assist from the Colt, but now that he's done it and survived 100+ years in hell, he's hard as coffin nails. Even if you edit John's memories, he might even appreciate family more when he was yearning for a quiet life, than when he actually had it. In a sense, John put away money for Dean's college when he was young then traded it for bullets, but the hope was stronger then.
      Obviously the actor was off making TV history as Negan at the time, but I've always thought Adam was an underrated character. He does, in essence, show what could've been. They could've just lived their lives - even if the world would've ended, they would've had a chance to live and Heaven always waits for Winchesters. Supplanting Chuck was probably for the best... but Adam sort of represents a truly heavenly sidebar, that maybe they could've found more peaceful ways to do what they did their entire lives. He, like them, loved his mother to the point of folly - and they are no different from him in any way. They're all driven by the same bonds.
      That's what makes him perfect - he is, in essence, the only Winchester who truly banked on love instead of a will to fight. Adam built relationships instead of skillsets, and arguably was the most admirable brother. He makes few missteps, other than trying to bring everything together.
      The irony being that he gets all of them thrown into the cage, but no more than the one he was already in.
      It's a cool show, things went DEEP.

      Speaking of the shows you mentioned, Smallville is quite good but the first season is very “monster of the week,” so it doesn’t really get really good until the second season, just like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s crucial to watch though for contexts.

    I actually really like season 3's shorter run, and I feel that it sort of adds thematically to it. Dean is going to die, that is everyone is aware of from the beginning of the season, but as long as it is something that is an eventuality, as long as they still have time to solve it, it is not the most pressing matter. As the season draws to a close and the pacing starts feeling a bit rushed, it sort of adds to that sense of impending doom of Dean's death. They are running out of time, they need a solution as soon as possible. And then... the season ends. A season cut short for a life cut short. Threads left unanswered because, well, that's death. The end.

    I know I'm 2 years too late to react to your interpretation of the show but everything you said about the show was spot on. Seasons 1-5 were brilliant. When Kripke left after season 5 the quality and arc was often chaotic, unfocused, yet still brilliant. As the show marched on, I would constantly go back to rewatch seasons 1-5. Another aspect of the Kripke seasons was his use of a darker film. Kripke always wanted the show to be a horror show, so the darker film created a more menacing vibe. I was sorely disappointed after Kripke left they went to brighter film lighting. You mentioned that you were going through some hard times and decided to watch Supernatural to help escape your problems. I can 100% relate. My husband left me for another woman. I can't even describe the mental torment I was going through during that time. So I would lose myself in the world of Supernatural. It helped to focus on something else.

    Casting throughout the entire series is awesome you get so many actors and actresses that started and are in many other shows. So many of them put in a great performance even if it is just a small bit part. Lots of very great pieces of eye candy.

    Speaking as a writer, it was always really obvious that season 5 was originally written to be the final one. The finale has a character who is implied to be God narrating about how this is the end. Everything about it is screaming THE SHOW IS OVER, until Sam reappears out of nowhere in a last second moment of obvious sequel bait.
    Because of course the network wasn't going to let it end there, the show was a huge money maker. Networks only end a show if it's not profitable enough, or if it's too difficult to continue for other reasons.

    Season 4 is indeed the best season! i mean "it's a terrible life" alone carries it way beyond all other seasons for it's cultural critique and references. Also "monster movie" is a highlight of the show as a whole for it's creative 50's horror movie style. Season 4 is a mastahpieceeeee

    Supernatural started a year before I began my college. All through my college it served as a companion. I'll never forget the show. In fact me and my twin brother have saved our names as Sam and Dean in our phones respectively. We both loved the show. Watched till season 10. Felt the quality dropped afterwards. But for me and my brother Supernatural will always hold a special place in our hearts.

I love it! Happy to be finally be part of the fandom lol

    The season 5 ending was so good that I was convinced the show was over.
    3 years later I looked up the show and they were on season 8 and I was like "What the damn hell??"
    And seeing how the show ended... after 15 seasons...
    They really should've stopped at 5.
    There are some great moments in the following ten seasons but narratively speaking, Season 5 is it. It's where the show ended for real. The rest of it is all fun and games, really, and it speaks volumes of its lead actors to have been able to carry the show for this long, because there's so very little else in terms of storytelling worthwhile after Season 5.

    Jay, LOVE your SPN synopsis. I've often said the seasons broke down into 3 eras
    * 1-5 = Platinum
    * 6-10 = Silver
    * 11 - 15 = Pewter with a few gold and silver nuggets
    Kripke as showrunner was the pinnacle, along with Kim Manners impact on the show early on. Still watchable for me until Jeremy Carver left as showrunner. Then I had to cherry pick episodes to rewatch unlike earlier seasons which I could rewatch over forever.
    Thanks for the breakdown!

    My feeling about the show is that, through the seasons, it gradually converted its 'Fear index' into goofball antics. The transition made audiences take the series less seriously and those interested in scares walked away. Meanwhile those interested in relationship drama stayed on. The arrivals of DJ Qualls and Curtis Armstrong were red flags for 'Goofball comedy we've arrived.' The show began to feel very much like other Canadian thriller series of the genre (Bitten, Lost Girl, Dark Matter, Haven etc.) Your jaw will drop at the monotone development of it all.

    i always recommend supernatural seasons 1-5 to everyone. yeah "watch better tv", i have, but these seasons are literally my favorite tv show of all time and probably always will be. they hold a ton of sentimental value bc i started the show back in 2011 when I was 13 years old. even s1 for me is fantastic. the story from s1-5 is just so good, and i loved the fact that the show ended with sam dead and dean settling down even though it was always meant to be the opposite. i watch swan song and then I'll think of the season 15 finale and it's so disappointing bc it ends exactly as predicted and has no real weight (and i didn't even watch the show past season 7). whenever i think of the show fondly, it's always this original storyline. i think sam winchester is one of those characters that I'll never get over.

    So i watched the first 5 seasons when they came out with my mum when i was in my early teens and i love those until today and rewatch them every couple of years. This show just brings such a warm and unique feeling to me also i think the the roadtrip structure keeps it rly fresh especially when u know how tv shows back then and to this safe on budget by reusing actors and sets as much as they can. Also i can't praise the soundtrack of this show enough i just knew is was in for something special here when the first shapeshifter episode started with a song from iron butterfly, u just know that these guys are real old school rock and metal fans u just wouldn't be able to pick these songs as perfectly if u weren't.
