In this episode, Jeremy Clarkson celebrates the return of the handcrafted, coach-built car with a trip to Italy to drive the achingly beautiful and incredibly rare Alfa Romeo-based Touring Disco Volante. Richard Hammond attacks the dunes of Abu Dhabi in a remarkable six-wheeled Mercedes called the G63 6x6, while James May makes a rare trip to the test track to try out the intriguingly minimalist Caterham 160 and its insanely fast sister, the 620R. Also in the show, comedian Jack Whitehall tries his hand as the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Its simple Historic fact. Hitlers bunch bought gaggles of G-4's. Even the tv show Hogan's Heroes featured one in the opening credits.

VW = Volks Wagen which means "car for the people" in translation. if hitler would have been successful with his plans, every civilian would be driving a VW now and not a benz. and you know that BMW would have gone bankrupt in the 1960s if there wouldnt have been a german nazi-milllionaire named herbert quandt that bought and saved the company. he made his money by using prisoners of war from around the world to work in his battery and weapon factories as his slaves. his batteries and his guns were playing an important part to keep hitlers war machinery running. hitler brought in the prisoners, quandt enslaved them in his factories and soldiers of the so called "waffen-SS" were guarding the slaves. through that he was able to buy the company BMW in the 60s. he allready was a rich man before all of that went down and he was never prosecuted through the nürnburger processes. after his death his wife johanna quandt took over the company. they are the richest and most influencal family in germany to this day. by the way the battery factory the slaves used to work in for the quandts and the nazis are todays VARTA battery factories and they were in quandt possesion until the year 2000. then they sold to an american company... considering all that i think its ethically pretty save to drive a mercedes.

Amazing. The first few seconds look like walking on the craters on the moon or something. One can only imagine the horrors of traveling thru a desert like this 100 yrs ago on camels. The thirst, the heat and mind numbing boredom

Normally I might agree. However a bunch of the Merc 4x4 came to Australia and failed, on the Simpson Desert I believe. From memory it was mostly suspension issues. So built in Germany and costing a lot, does not always equal a good enough.
Having said all of that, I think they look absolutely amazing. Is the 6x6 overkill? Of course. But what a machine!

As an everyday car I cant see this being used but I can see it being used for something lik an off road emergency response vehicle.
If only everyone was smart enough to realize that you don't need huge trucks/SUVs for everyday driving, unless you have a need to tow/haul things on a daily basis or if you actually drive off-road. If you have a family, a minivan or station wagon works just as well, if not better.
I know that I would rather be seen in a minivan or better yet, a station wagon, if I had a family and needed to move them around. I would only get a truck/SUV if I had a boat or something and needed the power of said truck/SUV to tow my boat.
